Cook/Baker here. 15 years in the industry and ongoing. Dutch food, especially our winter stews, braised meats, draadjesvlees, sucadelappen, riblappen, (Only like mama and Oma can make it) and ovencooked potatoes filled with ragout (A very forgotten and little known about dish) and soups like ewrtensoep, are a labour of time. Then we love our savoury snacks like the croquette, saucijzenbroodje, bakleverworst, patat, bitterballen, sausages, bacons, cheese, most famously the Dutch Gouda. All of whom go supremely well with Groningse Mosterd. Then there is the fish, Herring eaten raw with onions, or smoked salmon and trout, actual delicacies in some parts of the Netherlands and worth the trip. Then there is the gehaktbal, done differently in every province and defended with passion as the best meatball in Holland where ever you go. Then there is the sweets, from the Overijsselse Kozak or Krentenwegge to the Limburgse Vlaai to the Bossche Bol, Fries Suikerbrood en Oranjekoek, Urkse dikkoek, Arhemse meisjes from Gelderland, Groningse poffert, Turfkoek from Drente, The Zeeuwse Bolus from Zeeland, and ofcourse the ever popular and famous Dutch Stroopwafel. The Oliebol, the Appelflap and Dutch applepie. And lets not even begin on the Dutch staple that is the Pannekoek and the childrens treat known as the poffertje. I could go on for hours. We have a a food culture, we have our traditional foodstuffs and tastes. But they are *Simple tastes, done incredibly well, with time and patience* And that has allways been the hallmark of Dutch food.
Hi Nicos, Just want to point out that something overlooked by many foodies is that we also have more exotic food. My Poeple the Indo's but also the Maluku brought a lot of dishes from the Dutch East Indies, that have been incorporated even in Dutch Snack bars. But for example a Rice table which are a lot of meat and vegetable dishes with fried rice, have been declared official Dutch heritage. But also Surinam and the Dutch Antilles have spread there dishes in to the Dutch culture. Next time you you come for dinner you should really try it, Indrapura in Amsterdam is a great restaurant for this , my aunt is actually the chef cook there. If you try the Satey, meat scewers of different meat in a Ketjap (sweet soy like) , with unions and peppers is absolute to die for, this meat melts in your mouth. Loved you vid, good luck in the future
I got one complaint and thats about the snert, where I live we make it very thick, you know you got a good snert if you can stick your spoon in it and it stands up straight without holding onto it.
Thank you for promoting our food and trying to break the stereotype! I'm sure I speak for most Dutch people when I say that we really appreciate it. Your distaste for haring is completely understandable since you are not a big seafood fan. If anyone reading this is into seafood and is planning on visiting The Netherlands, be sure to try it! Smoked eel and smoked mackerel are also great. Thanks again Nicos!
He is not lying.. the bacon in Cyprus is not great. I moved to Cyprus loooong ago, as it is a wonderful country with great food of it's own. But we need to defend Dutch cuisine! 🙂
Definetely! Living in the UK for many years I was spoiled for choice and quality bacon that made me disappointed in the Cypriot brands. Thanks for commenting and of course for watching! Have a great week! 😀
Thanks for this video it's always nice to see people from outside the Netherlands trying our food, and I as a Dutchman can tell you that there are plenty of Dutch people who don't like a harring sandwich, it just has to do with your taste, I don't like all Dutch stews myself so it just depends on what you like.
Your mistake is you eat haring with the bread. The best method to eat it is hold the herring by the tailfin, swipe it through the raw onions. Tilt your head backwards and slide the raw herring into your mouth.. I hate fish also but raw salty herring is one of the best things ever.
Just lott's off unions next time no bun, fork and knife so you control how much of the unions you take in with each bite. And the harring should be fresh not slime at all
There will always be people who just don't like certain types of food. I'm dutch and if it's up to me the haring would be thrown back in to the sea. Just like the hutspot. Thank you for visiting our country.
You were eating mainly fastfood. In the center of Amsterdam the food is for tourists; that means it is terrible and expensive. Outside the center the quality improves. In the restaurants fast food is dominating; everything which can go from the refrigerator to the dish (salad) or which can be fried or baked. A typical home cooked meal has much more vegetables. Just notice, restaurants are hardly serving any cooked food. The restaurants love apple pie; frozen you can keep it fresh for weeks and before serving you only need a microwave.
@@jandoedel7519 nothing gave me the impression that it wasn’t fresh! Even the fish didn’t have any rotten smell or texture. But definitely a restaurant cannot replicate a granmas dish but unfortunately it is something out of my reach as a tourist. Next time I will try going somewhere more off the beaten path! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏
Microwaving an applepie? No never! There are enough places with fresh applepie. It needs to have a crusty outer layer and be nice warm and mushy within. Microwave mushes the whole pie 😢
@@chiitra271 The apple pie I tried but unfortunately didn’t add in the video was the *bees knees* . Seriously you should make a bigger deal about it to tourists! Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
@@nicoskefalas Ofcourse the fish does not have rotten smell... we live near the sea if you did not noticed. But yeah its just some snacks.. no proper dishes.
Don't worry about the broodje haring a lot of people from other countries don't like them and also plenty of Dutch people don't eat them, maybe next time try gerookte paling/smoked eel it is a bit expensive but taste very good and if you want to try Dutch Indonesian food try something like gado gado all do there are a lot of good choices in Indonesian food.
You had snert as the first meal? Usually that's the whole dinner. Not 100% sure but I think you had erwtensoep, snert is the same thing but way thicker.
My Italian partner loves my Dutch cooking. Especially the stampots (hutspot is one of them). She'll actually ask me to make it. The Dutch know their way around soups as well. As for my English heritage, I'm afraid to say the only good English food is foreign cuisine 😅
Pannenkoeken for breakfast are only allowed if they are from the night before and you are hungover. Pannenkoeken is a diner food, or, if you are lucky, lunch. Also, always go for Pannenkoeken met kaas en stroop.
The fish is also not for me, if you ever return you should try eastern Netherlands peasoup/snert it is way thicker (and better), dried sausage, Frisian sugarbread and you seem to have missed out on a berehap pinda (meatball, with onionrings on a stick and Indonesian peanutsauce).
Pretty sure the fries you had was the patatje oorlog (fries war) because they either come with curry ketchup and onions or mayonnaise ketchup and onions (yes 1 sauce difference)
Heyy amazing vid! Love the entusiasm you have for my countries food! :D Though i do have a tip for you if you come back to The Netherlands you should eat a Bitterbal (singular) with your hands so that the crust doesn't break that much!
Great video! Thanks for the debunking and I don't blame you at all for the reaction on the Dutch-style-herring-treat 🙂 You either love it or hate it, there is no middle of the road. I personally love it, but I remember my non-dutch (then) girlfriend being absolutely (not positively) shocked by it ;-)
i dont remember pancakes being a breakfast food for me, my family and everyone i know pancakes are dinner (although we sometimes reheat them in the microwave as breakfast just to be lazy)
Yeah, for breakfast is an american thing, dutch breakfast and lunch is brown bread with a slice of something and butter in the past. Pancakes were dinner, fries are too, more than a snack.
in his defense, i'm dutch and i sometimes make pancakes for breakfast :D (it's not really the norm though) i'm not going to stand around with a mixer at 7 in the morning , but the shake bottle ones i sometimes do make pancakes in the morning
Beef stew with fries must be the best. Also makes me think the most about Belgian cuisine (where I believe they retained more of the late middle ages cuisine (and beer)).
As a dutchman, I can say our food tastes allright. But its nowhere as good as different countries who play with spices and different ingredients waaay more. And also most dutch people with full dutch heritage cannot cook as well. They were raised on bland an often overcooked food, so they make the same😢
So the prices on the fries I'm guessing are jacked up cuz of your location being Amsterdam I'm guessing where I live fries cost max 4,5 for a bigger portion and 3 euro for a medium portion
8:10 good that’s the best way to get stroopwafels, fresh and no bells and whistles. Those extra thing you can add are not something dutch people normally put on their stroppwafels, the extras are simply to make it more interesting for tourists.
Van Wonderen is purely a tourist place though. A basic stroopwafel costs more than 10 euros and they're far from the best. The best fresh stroopwafels are sold at markets, and no Dutch person would pay more than 3 euros for one.
@@Handwithaface I got it from Hans Egstorf at 7.50! I knew that there are much cheaper places but I wanted to visit a historic waffle shop. So yep perhaps I got a slightly overpriced dessert but it was phenomenal! Thanks for watching and commenting though! I appreciate it!
Most of these dishes are things I definitely also enjoy, as a Dutch person! However, most of these are all either dinner dishes, or a side dish to have with a beer, the bitterballen specifically. My main issue with the Dutch cuisine is how we pretend that we've created multiple dishes, while all we really did is change the vegetable that's in there. Hutspot and stamppot as a primary example! As for the rest of the day, we really only tend to eat bread. I think that because of these two reasons, Dutch food generally gets a bad reputation ^^;
Yeah when I googled for cheaper places they were all quite far from the city centre. It would have taken some time and money to get there making them not worth the trip and therefore I chose a historic place to try frites at. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
Dutch food isn't bland or boring when prepared to perfection. The point many people make, however, is that Dutch cuisine tends to be less diverse compared to, say, French or Italian cuisine.
Not every food has to be spectacular, multi-hour project that needs chefistry. I appreciate “everyday” food or “granma” food because it’s not posh or anything. Just tasty and filling. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
As a Dutchie I'm not too fond of the Dutch AGV (potato veg and meat) and I usually eat Asian, Mediterranean or Arabic cuisines, but I love the Dutch classics you tasted 😊 I love herring too but not on a broodje
Before I watched the video I was going to comment that as a Dutchman I think Dutch food sucks and is very bland. But you managed to actually pick out some of the best foods that I also really like (except for hutspot), so great job! To me Dutch healthy dinner is very dull. We just combine everything with cooked potatoes and either serve them next to our vegetables with a piece of meat or we just mix it all together and call it a "stampot", while hardly using any spices. We went all over the world and colonized so many parts of it, yet we couldn't think of anything better than mashing all our foods together. I can't say I ever look forward to dinner when we eat traditional Dutch vegetable and potato dinners. But, I think we have some amazing non-vegetable dinners, soups and deserts. For healthy food I usually look at Asian cuisines myself as I they don't cook everything to pulp and mash it. I must say though. In your video you mention that pannenkoeken and poffertjes are a breakfast food that can also be eaten as a brinner. In my almost 37 years of life in this country I have never seen anyone eat those as a breakfast. As a brunch, lunch or dinner sure. But it's not really known here as a breakfast food as far as I'm aware. Our breakfasts are usually a variation of different possible kinds of breads, porridges, cereals and/or eggs. I might be wrong on this, but that has been my experience so far. Great video though! Thanks for putting some of the most amazing foods we have in the spotlight :)
Some of the commenters seem to be ok with them as breakfast! But next time I am in the NL I am not having them for breakfast! Haha Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏

A note on the herring: There is quite a lot of variance in quality/taste between different fish shops, especially the touristy ones in Amsterdam. I’m Dutch and I love a good herring but I’m picky about where I buy it. Dutch people that like herring can tell usually by looking at it if it’s good or not, it should not look snotty/slimey, have firm but tender flesh and a bright red/pink color on the inside, definitely not dark red, it’s skin should have a nice bright silver sheen.

(With fries "Special" and "Oorlog" are sauce mixes with onions. ) Few Tips might if you ever visit again. Some have been said already. Herring never on bread. Either whole filet of cut in pieces with onions and pickle. IF you like bitterballen. Try the bigger Koketten. Good on a bun with mustard. Don't buy the cheap ones fropm the FEBO but get a "van dobben" Most stroopwafels you buy are marked up for tourists if you buy em fresh. Eat stroopwafels warm. Put them on your coffee or tea, or in chef mike for like 15/30 seconds. The taste explodes x10. Fresh from an ancient looking device are always the best ones.
It’s all about preference. The traditional cooked potatoes, vegetables and meat, are not really made for me, as a guy that eats vegetarian. But you can make it more exciting. There are many recipes and options. What I cook normally is just a ratjetoe from all kinds of influences, can’t even call it Dutch food lol. But I like pumpkin soup, stamppot made with beets, boerenkool (collard greens), snijbiet (Swiss chard), string beans etc.
Moved to the Netherlands years ago I only dislike about 5% of the food mostly fish dishes everything else was really good even the basic stuff is ok I'm not the biggest fan of huts-pot but sometimes it hits the spot like good Sunday roast best in winter time just like you say :) (also zonder means no in this sense it means fries with no sauce the sauce u have is called special pronounced the Dutch way and is always good on anything raw onions, curry and friet sauce what is not to love especially the Frikendel Special)
Loved this video and thank you for showcasing Dutch food! One minor thing I have is that you copied "Friet zonder saus", which means fries with no sauce, yet showcased a very good bag of fries with sauce. But that's literally the only minor thing I have, it's an amazing watch and I shared it! Also, haring is def an acquired taste hahaha!
@@nicoskefalas I really dislike herring as well as a Dutch guy, but i know plenty of people like it with raw onions. I also prefer baked fish like kibbling.
You talked about Hutspot but then showed boerenkool... Not the same, try the latter, and zuurkool of course, or rauwe andijviestamp. And about the cookies, stroopwafel, nice, but don't forget speculaas.
Agreed with your food takes. Next time, get fries with oorlog sauce which is satay sauce, onion. mayo and ketchup. It's very good imo. Haring is an aquired taste indeed. I don't mind them but it's not something I would seek out actively.
Depends where you are. Oorlog where I am from is just pindasaus and mayo nothing more. If you want unions, it becomes a kernoorlog. But in otherparts only the unions ontop of the mayo and pindasaus makes oorlog. And I believe some cafetaria call it patatje feest.
Pancakes and poffertjes aren't breakfast. Poffertjes are a snack and pancakes are a lunch or dinner. Also, stroopwafels are not dessert, but something you randomly snack on with a cup of coffee.
Seems that there is some difference in opinion among the Dutch! Nevertheless I won’t be repeating my mistakes again 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
Ahh eat it how you like. We drink coffee every moment of the day and that is in many countries not done..but hey...if you like it, go for it. Or Pineapple on pizza or well you get it.
Don't worry Nicos, I'm a Dutchman and know exactly what you mean about "Haring". If you don't like fish so much, haring is one of the worst things to eat just because it's fermented and it taste extremely fishy. Only "Surströmming" is much worse. That's the same fish, herring, but even more fermented and conserved into a can. Opening the can smells like a container of rotting diapers. Fortunately, that's not Dutch but Swedish 😂 I Do like Dutch "haring" but I know many Dutch people who don't like it either. So, it's absolutely no offense to the Dutch when you say that you don't like "haring". 😉 Great video and if you'll come back to the Netherlands, try "Gerookte Paling". That's Dutch for smoked eel. Also fish but I'm sure you'll like it. Fat, smokey and meaty and it lacks the fishy taste. It's still sold, freshly smoked in Volendam near to Amsterdam. But you can buy it also in Amsterdam.

Hi Nicos,
Just want to point out that something overlooked by many foodies is that we also have more exotic food.

Hutspot was lovely!!! But agreed 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏

Most of these dishes are things I definitely also enjoy, as a Dutch person! However, most of these are all either dinner dishes, or a side dish to have with a beer, the bitterballen specifically. My main issue with the Dutch cuisine is how we pretend that we've created multiple dishes, while all we really did is change the vegetable that's in there. Hutspot and stamppot as a primary example!
As for the rest of the day, we really only tend to eat bread. I think that because of these two reasons, Dutch food generally gets a bad reputation ^^;

Dutch food isn't bland or boring when prepared to perfection. The point many people make, however, is that Dutch cuisine tends to be less diverse compared to, say, French or Italian cuisine.

@@arturobianco848 Glad to hear there is a not so silent minority to dislike them! Ahahah Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
What the hell kind of broodje haring was that?
But if you’re not a fish guy I guess it can be too much of an acquired taste.
Loved the video
Idk but it was difficult to swallow! It was fresh and didn’t have an off smell but I just didn’t like it! Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
I will definitely try it!!! Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🙏
