Mercedes now recommends servicing the transmission (fluid and filter change w/o torque converter fluid change) every 39,000 miles. I recently changed mine and plan to do it again at 20,000 to 25,000 miles since I did not drain the torque converter. It was done by the dealer at 42,000 miles and the invoice showed only 6 liters of fluid were used. The torque converter holds about another 4 liters. FCP Euro has the service kit (with 6 liters) for $83 shipped and I figure that's cheap insurance.
yep, it's as simple as that! Also forget about WOT and redline... older automatic gear boxes like the low-rpm duty else the shaft bearings and the countless clutches simply get shot!! High performance is possible but only for a reduced time 😂
It’s not the solenoids, it’s the whole control unit, I never had a case of bad solenoid, not even once. The control unit fails and can’t actuate the solenoid and you get a fault that the solenoid is bad, you need a new TCU.
@@MercedesBenzTechs Ah ok ... that’s what I feared 🙁 Just wondered if it was worth replacing the single solenoid if I could identify it, but you have answered my question. Really appreciate the reply, thanks very much.
@@MercedesBenzTechs depend on OBD fault codes. Xentry DAS will show you exactly whats the problem and not every time it must be TCU.Might be a clutch which also can be repaired for 1/3 of the new price. You guys in USA always replace every part to new...customer pay...
Excellent & yes, I’m a technician. CLK350-2006. 50,000 miles, a lot of medium city driving. I’m gentle! Stuck in 7th, sometimes 3rd, only when fairly hot. Serviced box (oil & filter). Fault on computer……... bad or no signal, speed related…. Cleared. and now, it’s doing exactly the same game! If I restart the car, she’s back to normal until the next longer fast run. Apart from cleaning the multi plug, I didn’t touch anything. The multi plug was wet inside! and my techi mind tells me that there is some magnitic shit in and around that beautiful bit of black plastic! If I clean this board, all those solonoids and put it back together again, what are my chances! I already build classic gearboxes for my job, so I am brave, but never stupid (I hope). Thanks for the help and great video.
It never worked for me, I tried many times always end up having to replace it, I gave up trying to find other remedies I just replace it and the problem solved.
Here is a question for you on a Mercedes 5-speed 722.6 transmission. When I drive it hard and once in a blue moon the transmission would slip in gear and then catches itself about 1/2 second later. No CEL. We did pull a code from Star tool. it was P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio. The transmission pump seal, valve body conductor plate and pilot bushing was replace. I'm running out of options to why it does this but I was thinking the next thing is transmission and torque converter full flush.
My client 08-GL450 stopped shifting yesterday and I have tow it to my shop, please David should I go ahead and change conductor plate or flush out the transmission?
Benz are built to generate repair business regardless of high maintenance cost. It may be a good idea to RESET ADAPTATIONS after an ATF service... different shift points and better oil pressures 👍🏻
I have a 2011 cls550 722.9 only 50K miles on it... Somehow coolant mixed with the transmission fluid. Had that strawberry/chocolate milk throughout the whole trans when I dropped it. Thoroughly cleaned and put all new clutches/seals etc. Check all sensors and their in good shape.. BUT the conductor plate plug (with the 2 orange O-rings) bottom 4 pins broke off from the plastic circuit board of the conductor plate. My question is will I be fine trying to solder the plug back or I will just have to replace the conductor plate? Can't just grab any conductor plate and get it reprogrammed? Thanks in advance. Lots to read.
Happened to me several times when I just started working on this transmissions, there is not a time that I install this plates that I’m not worried about it braking but I think I mastered it after about 3,000 of them lol, you will have to get a new one and have to program, SCN etc...it’s also considered as a theft related part so not every one can buy that part for you.. good luck
@@MercedesBenzTechs lol 3,000! Well, I have 2,999 to go before I master it. I'm glad I'm just working on my own haha... What would you estimate the cost of that piece and programmed from licensed shops? I have a feeling that this won't be as quick of a fix as I thought. I rebuilt my 4t65e-hd for the first time messing with any trans. And that was easy. Researched and did a lot of reading was the hard part haha. Taking apart this 722.9 was way easier than the 4t65e-hd for sure! BUT parts are a lot cheaper. Wondering the cost before I start shopping around for legal conductor plates.
Excellent information mate. Thanks MUCH for the information and I'll be sure to spread it.. I just paid the dealer $2200 for the repair. I can confirm that you can only get the part combined with the valve body and you have to be a dealer/certified to get it. I did the conductor plate repair on a 722.5 and was expecting to do same on a 2006 cl500 (722.901)..nope
Have a 07 gl450 I bought from a customer. Replace the converter because of a loss of power with mb remain.. the power is back but now I have a hard bucking on take off or at 10mph. Doesn't matter what gear. No codes stored. Changed lock up and control solenoid and cleaned valve body. No change. Any input would be a great help. Thanks bucking was not there with old converter and this would be 2nd replacement converter
Hi I have a 2012 c200, with 80000km, I get an error on transmission P0606(selection range sensor A has an electrical fault) but the car shifts perfectly. I recently changed the lever bushing and oil and filter due to to that error.P0606 and P0705
Outstanding video and information. I have a 2011 S63 and plan to do a service oil and filter change on the transmission. I understand that the conductor plate has to be ordered by an authorized dealer/technician. Can they order it, program it and I install myself? Another question I have is if the conductor plate and valve body is removed are removed for cleaning does that alter the module in the conductor plate as far as needing reprograming
Craig Lewis thanks for watching. If the quality of the fluid is not too bad do not remove the valve body, the plug where the wire harness connects is very sensitive and may brake upon removal! No programing is needed if you use the same conductor plate (vgs). Every authorized TRP shop or dealer can order install and program TCU.
Hi, I have ML 350 4matic 2014 with a 722.9. I do some trailer towing popup trailer) 110k miles. Serviced trans twice. I would like to install an aftermarket trans fluid temp gauge and aux cooler. Do you think this aftermarket gauge will interfere with the electronics and the cooler will change the press drastically? Thanks
Hi, I am ready to install my transmission cooler, but I was wondering. The lines connected from trans to the radiator, talking about flow direction, which one is flowing from trans to radiator and other one from radiator to transmission flow wise. Do you know which one is which? Thanks for your help.
Hi, by any chance do you know the size of flex hose (ID) of the trans cooler flex lines of a ML350 2014. Trying to install my transmission cooler and some cooler are 5/16 and other 3/8. Just want to match it with the ID size of the factory flex hose ID size. Thanks
I have a 2008 350 c that went into limp mode . I scanned it using the obd 2 and it comes up as U0101 transmission control module communication loss. I checked a few things and found the connector that enters the transmission had oil in it and was shorting between pins. I cleaned it on both sides with contact cleaner and still no communication. Why would oil be in this location ? What's next?
My b200 Mercedes 2009 transmission leaking small amount of fluid from transmission electrical connections from those red seals. Can an standard mechanic bought & replace it.
End users can still do it. In fact, it's probably easier.. we just need to take the conductor plate out, send it off to circuitboardmedics. They will refurbish all the solenoids and sensors for only $400 bucks and you won't have to reprogram your car either since it's going back on the same circuit board. You will still have to have a special tool to measure the temperature when putting the transmission fluid back in. They'll even loan you the tool for that!
It’s only a temporary repair and only when you have issue with the speed sensor, there are so many other things that can go wrong with this plate..(thanks for taking the “bla bla bla” out, shows you are a little more mature).
Excellent video could not have explained the replacement procedure any better. I gave the video a thumbs up and subscribed to your channel . I am able to get a new conductor plate through a technician at a mb dealer He has my title and vin is verified for the trp part. I also have access to xentry and the multiplexer , I have a question before I remove the faulty conductor plate do I retrieve the information from the faulty control unit? then after new control unit is installed do I transfer the information from the old control unit to the new one. Or can I just install the clean control unit and scn code it ? Also I’m going to borrow the xentry tablet and mutiplexer so I will be in offline mode will I be able to scn code or do I have to be logged in with a D7 number and to the mb server? Thank you.
Jhosse Cruz thanks for your kind words, I always go through initial start of already installed control unit and do the whole installation including SCN which requires a D7, I never tried to transfer from one to another although it’s an option and I’m not sure if you do or don’t need D7 for that purpose but it’s always better to have an access to MB headquarters when you install new modules, and if you do have D7 go ahead and update ME (motor electronics) as well
+Mercedes Benz Techs What are the differences in the valve body/TCU assemblies that make some of them replaceable separately (i.e. Just replacing the TCU) and others where you have to replace them as a whole set? I've read about assemblies being flow tested as a pair but that doesn't make sense to me as the TCU just reads speed and other signals and redirects fluid to different clutch packs. I don't see how the flow characteristics of he valve body would impact operation of the TCU and visa versa. Thanks! Great info in your vid btw.
The computer is much more complicated than you think, it also reads speeds sensors, throttle position sensor and yaw rate sensors through out the car, Mercedes changed the diameter of the valves to change shifting ratios.. and shifting quality, not enough time to explain all the changes..
Also when you change only the VGS(TCU) as a part of the SCN coding you have to enter the number that is marked on the side of the valve body (220 455 3106) if your valve body is not supported by the new VGS updated software you will not be able to complete SCN, if you try to trick the coding process and write a new valve body number but use the old one (I tried) your car will have incorrect gear ratio coded and go to limp home mode..
Wow... It's incredible the lengths they went to to make this as expensive as possible when it goes wrong, hahaha. I mean like how on earth does the VGS software know you're lying about the hardware beneath it... lol
Hi I'm planning to do a complete flush on my Mercedes W204 722.9 transmission, including torque converter drain and flush oil cooler, but after watching your video I would like to examine and clean any dirt from the solenoid screens and hall sensors of the control module I have one question? will disconnecting the plug on to the TCM leave me with fault codes to clear after reinstalling, I don't want to create more problems, great videos by the way, Regards David
Hi David, I have a 2006 E200 and recently the fuel consumption seems to have doubled. The engine mounting units have been changed because I am getting vibration on the passenger side. However, the next problem is that the transmission will have a "cloak" sound when shifting from "D" to "N" and from "R" to "P". There is absolutely no sound swifting in opposite direction. Could it be due to the conductor plate malfunction or "torque converter?
thanks man very helpful. i have 2004 s430 and it gave me that same message but the guy took it out sais its got parts that are broken is that even possible to break? because it started sayin pre save inactive and gave check engine and everytime i put on drive or reverse it did a big kick and it wouldnt change gears was stuck on 1st gear so he said he will repair the original one all for 650
Vahan Petrosyan take it to get a second opinion, you can't fix them and I'm not sure if you have 722.6 or 722.9 transmission, on the older transmission (722.6) it shouldn't be too expensive to fix since it's not a theft related part (TRP) Mercedes started the new (722.9) transmissions on S classes in fall of 2004, first check what kind of transmission you have (call the dealer) than have a professional shop do a professional diagnostics.
Mercedes Benz Techs its 722.9 the guy at the shop said its that and he knows a guy who repairs them and had few customers they never complained but is it possible to get pieces broken inside? and what can i do when it kicks on 1st 2nd gears is it the clutch?
Vahan Petrosyan no, there can't be any broken pieces inside!! There is guy in CA his name is Chris and he is with G and N motors, he is a Mercedes master tech and he can replace the torbine speed sensors on the VGS (integrated control unit) but it is only a patch, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, if your VGS is defective you will have to change both VGS and valve body about $1,800 to $2,000. I would recommend you to save your time and money and do it right the first time, in the long run it will pay off..
Mercedes Benz Techs you are right i will see what happens i dont heva that cash now i told him to go ahead and fix it if i see its problem im taking it to the dealer asap and finish the problem once and for all. thanks sir ur thr best. ill go visit that shop too thanks
i changed front control arms on my CLK500 2006, and after i drove away, car went into limp-in mode. i got P0702 code . I know for sure that the mechanic took off the wheel knuckle without taking off speed sensor and it got stretched . most likely got broken ! i cleared the code and disconnected the battery but no luck . Do you think speed sensor would do cause the car to get into limp mode ? or would it be just a coincident that TCU broke at the same time ? Thanks in advance .
Great video. I am a former Mercedes Benz tech and I have recently started servicing the 722.9s and it did involve purchasing pump equipment. I recently sent out a 722.9 conductor plate to be repaired because I don't have the ability to perform SCN coding. I also discovered that E350 4matics up to about 2010 I believe still have the 722.6 and only the rwd models have the 722.9 so of course that conductor plate is a straight swap due to the TCM or VGS being remotely located.
All Mercedes vehicles after 2006 have 722.9, I have a friend in CA that fixes them.. Google G and N motors, his name is Chris, I personally, just buy a new one but you have to obtain licens to be able to buy it since it's considered as a theft protected part. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video.
Mercedes Benz Techs 2007 E-class 4matics do not have the 722.9 transmissions. The pictures of the conductor plate in a 2007 E350 4matic being changed are on my website. I have been fixing these cars since 2001 so I was hardly guessing.
+Marc Smith I did more than 6 2007 4matics the past three weeks, all of them had 722.9 but no need to argue.. I'll check tomorrow if they have also 722.6 and let you know..
06 ML 350 722.9 on Jan 12 at stop light would not accelerate into gear going past 20-25 mph. I couldn't believe it. Had it checked at Autozone code P0306, then AAMCO code 1769 TCU error and 260F speed sensors. What should I do? It is the whole valve body or just speed sensor? Will entire unit have to be replaced?
Hi.. question here.. can I change only the valve body, keeping my old electronic plate? I have some 1-2-3 and 3-2-1 hard shifting, not alwayse and not the same intensity when it does. No errors. Some people say it may be also the torque convertor, but I dont think so.. what do u think? 722.9 w212 e350 cdi 4matic 265bhp
@@MercedesBenzTechs Mine has 190.000km aprox 120.000 miles, i bought a used one with only 37.000miles without the electronic plate, i’m curious if i can pair it.. i dont know if those solenoids work with another plate.
Honestly, I like your individual info. I'm in California by Thousand Oaks. I have a 2007 s550 with the 722.9. Do you know of any shops( that are reasonable) out here? My car more than likely has contaminated fluid because it has this rocking motion when I drive up hills and sometimes when I'm coasting along at 35mph. It's not shifting into those upper gears correctly unless I use my paddle shifters. Contaminated fluid could be causing my torque converter to be acting incorrectly.
is the valvebody interchangeable. i heard from a mercedes benz dealership that i could change the valve out of one transmission into another as long as the electronic conductor plate is good. i was trying to do that for a transmission swap in a c300 w204
devin dodson you can't, the VGS, known as conductor plate is considered as a TRP (theft relevant part) and is designated to the vehicle it was initially coded in to, if you take one with or without the valve body it will not work on other vehicles however, you. An change the valve body if you wish without the VGS as long as you use identical part number (220 454 3607 etc).
hi david I have 2008 ml350 with 87000 miles on it and service the transmission at 75000 miles. Now I have hard down shift at from 3 to 2 at stoping. do you think this is valve body problem? or do i have to replace the transmission?
Hello. I currently have a 2013- GLK350 - 276engine, with 52668miles. When I bought it had 45,356 miles. One day, engine light came on and it turns on. It's the tcm. I've had it service with new valve body and plate, my transmission is still jerking from 4th to 5th gear (23mph to 33-35mph). At Mercedes Benz of Boston - I keep hearing it's that it's program right and they've checked the conductor plate etc... now they've sent the info to Germany to see what is the solution. Can you help. Please? The feels smooth except for the transmission. When I bought the truck, it shifted suuuper smooth, like a dream. Please help!
1ELiMusic I had a customer that went to the dealer and changed the valve and TCU and the transmission was acting up, after that the dealer recommended him to change the transmission and he declined and came to my shop, we decided to change the valve body and TCU again and it fixed the problem turned out the valve body and the computer were bad... questions, when you shift manually (with the buttons on the steering wheel) does it still doing the same? If doing it manually resolves the issue then the unit is defective. Keep me posted.
Thank you so much, man! I appreciate it. I'm glad I was able to call and I believe it was you who I spoke to. So I just got back from the dealer, as it turns out, Germany suggested to change the plate again. "Hopefully" this solves the issue. ABout what we spoke earlier today. as it turns out "anyone can come up here and buy a transmission without having having any TRP issues. The plate is the same. The only time we ask for the documents is when you need a duplicate key. Are you accusing us of fraud? Because you have the invoices with the part numbers..." At that point I got pissed off and basically said, well it's my car and not your vehicle. It's been here about 7 times already... so you tell me???"
Jaime Melara All TRP has to have a proof of ownership!!!! It includes keys, ME TCU ignition switch and steering lock! No dealer is exempt Mercedes is very strict about it, if they get audited by Mercedes and no TRP documentation is presented they will be fined for every and each incident. Regardless, I hope your issues are resolved with the new TCM, VGS. Good luck.
Supposedly they don't have to do that since the vehicle, VIN and myself were there. According to my service adviser, since they got the "OK" from Germany there's no need to prove that I am the rightful owner of the vehicle. They only verify a TRP if it were a key needed and if the vehicle was not there or if it shows no record of ever servicing that vehicle. I'm going to compare all invoices from when I first took it in, to the one now to the one I'll be "hopefully" getting tomorrow.
Hello . I have a Mercedes SL320 R129 . It has 115,271 original miles . The transmission shifts and works perfectly driving it forward but when it's put it in reverse , I gently press the gas and the engine revs like the transmission is in neutral and after about 20 or 25 seconds , the transmission will work and can be driven in reverse. Can the conductor plate be the issue ? I haven't had time to really look for leaks , etc . It does have transmission fluid in it . I've ordered a Mercedes diagnostic tool but it hasn't came in yet . I live in Rome , GA , about an hour drive from Atlanta. Can you please give me your contact information ? I have more questions and perhaps you can build a transmission if needed. I don't really trust anyone here to do transmission work on my Mercedes. I have two R129's and I work on them myself when applicable. I'm really impressed with your knowledge of the Mercedes transmission. Best Regards
Hello everyone ! I got an E class 2005 engine size 3.2 diesel, always when I start the car in the morning and when I drive it shakes a little , when I press the gas bedals won't shake only when it drive minimal. Can someone tell me what should I do with that because mechanics in here won't know .
hi I swaped the differential for my w202 CDI and mine is automatic and it stays only on one gear .. I went to the mechanic and checked my faults and it marked the constructor plates of the gear... the differential does it matters or no
Khalid Tonna no, conductor plate codes refers only to issues you may have with controlling the valves for up shifting or downshifting or internal speed sensors
can I try cleaning the conductor plate conductor plate instead of replacing it if I just got the code p0717 turbine speed sensor no circuit it is stuck in first gear and won't shift out
SCN coded (serial calibration number) only by a designated shop.. 2004 and up on S class and 2006 and up on all other classes...if you use a virgin VGS and don't correctly introduce it to the car(with xenetry) it will not work. You can NOT program a used one!
Hi David, we have a 2005 SLK 350 with the 7g tranny. Yesterday my wife pulled upto some traffic lights went to pull of and it wouldnt change out of first gear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks Oh PS i ran the Carly diagnosis app on it and it came up Pressure Control Solenoid B Electrical Code: OBD00 P0778 Fault: There is a fault in control unit ''Transmission''. Hi I have a mercerdes ml320 w164 2006 model I have issue with the transmission it will go into Drive and reverse ok but when the gas is pressed the vehicle will not move can you please advise is this common problem with TCM module going faulty I am due to get it diagnosed with a star machine soon just wanted some advice I do have a faulty rear ABS sensor someone said this could also cause my vehicle to do the above and not move when in drive or reverse gear.
Mercedes Benz Techs Hi many thanks for your prompt reply could it simply be something like the speed sensor that will make the transmission not move in Drive etc.
rangzeb hussain most likely no, but you have to change the speed sensor first, if it was at my shop I would clear the codes first and see how the car responds, you have several speed sensors through out the car, some on the wheels some internally inside the transmission and one on the engine (CPS) they all have to talk to each other and give identical information as the computer expects, if any one of them is faulty the car will go into a limp mode (but still move) I will need to read codes first to determine what is the issue. Keep me posted
Mercedes Benz Techs hi pal thanks will try that first and let you know what codes I get once I get it diagnosed via a star machine I have subscribed to your channel and appreciate all your help and valuable advice.
Hi quick update I have had it diagnosed with a star machine but it's not coming up with any error codes for the transmission and transmission passed all the diagnostic checks on the star machine and you could actually hear it going into all the gears ok so my Indy suspects it could be mechanical and not electrical his next action is to check the ATF levels and also change a faulty rear ABS sensor and help or advice of what to do next would be greatly appreciated.
Hello thank you for your video , i'm a GLK Class owner and i have issues with my gear box 2010 70.000 Km , sometimes it jerk when downshifting the gears automatically ! Is it the same issues in this model , and what's the solution ? thank you so much
change the oil TWICE to flush the most crud possible out of the transmission system. Then do a simple "ADAPTATIONS RESET" with key on/off to force the computer to relearn the shifting pressures and shift points. If it is still the same after 500Mi gentle driving valve body needs the replacement shown in this video to get CLEANED UNIT (with latest software). If you have a good scanner dig in the live data to see improvements else $2 to 3,000USD... the parts (solenoids + sensors) are dirt cheap but this simple repair is bread and butter business...
I am facing the issue u speak of solenoid going fault because of lack of change of transmission oil and now i have a fault code of solenoid d i wanted to know isthere a way to clean the contacts so the issue is solved i have tested the solenoid via 12v supply and it clicks and also checked omgs please help Thanks
exactly that's what I have understood from forums as well wanted to know is it possible in any way I can clean it with transmission fluid or something that will solve the dirty contact issue on my TCM??
Mercedes Benz Techs ok so my supplier in China is saying he will programme and send it to me but when I plug it I have to do shift adaptation any help on how that's done and if it's needed!?
Good video man. I recently bought a 2007 s550 the original owner stated one day it wouldnt shift it would go into gear but not move.Low and behold the day i go to buy it the car engaged all gears and drove fine. Four days later after i bought it i put it into drive and nothing it just revs up. I have a shop and i work on a fair share of european cars. So i hooked my autel scan tool up to it and got a u0101 code (Lost Communication with Transmission Control Module) does that sound like a conductor plate problem to you. he told me he had the ism changed many many years ago but if it was a bad ism im sure it wouldnt shift out park and everything else.
Cornell Johnson ISM stands for intelligent Servo Module, it’s the square plastic piece attached to the transmission on the side, it’s sole purpose is to electronically shift the transmission from P to N R and D, you will hear a noise as it shifts sounds like ZZZITT... Now, if you hear the shifting noise but yet nothing happen and the car won’t move at all, you need to look into your transmission pump, since even if your control unit is bad the car will go into a limp mode where it still moving foreword but not shifting.... disconnect your transmission cooler line and start the engine, is fluids shooting out the hose??? If not, replace transmission etc.,. If it does look into new TCM etc...., regardless, God Bless!!!
@@MercedesBenzTechs Thank you for the video ..mercedes wasnt much help but believe i have this trans ? 06 c230 sport ... Im not seeing a dipstick tube so assuming im screwed ... but cpl quick questions if you can help me with would be deeply appreciated. What the black rubber circular plug on top with plastic piece underneath .. I have recently had pretty bad valve cover gasket and seen it soaked a wire leading to intake area which is also pretty soaked and maybe the trans is getting bad connection ? Or maybe the plug going into trans ? Or how about fact that the fluid is most likely low as it has a leak around the pan as well.. Any chance the turbine code believe 0017 and 2006 code is what i have and in limp...
So can I just open my 722.9, remove the valve body as you have here and clean it all up? And what would I use to wash ? Alcohol ? My car is a 2008 c300 4matic and it had a bad transfer case bearing once and it had a bit of metal in the fluid.. I have drained it and flushed it twice in a lap of 40k km but im still sure it didnt get all of it. I'm wondering if cleaning it would be safe then i would trust it more.
ltwargssf R yes, wouldn’t be bad to clean it, open the valves too and clean inside the valves and inspect for wear, better to clean with magnet and transmission fluids than alcohol.
Hello again, I just cleaned out all my conductor plate and valve body( I didnt open the valve body, just removed the conductor plate to clean under it and the solenoids). The solenoids weren't as bad as I thought, a little sludge on the manual valve magnet and the valve body was a little dirty but nothing abnormal I would say. Now I did this because ever since I have this car( 2 years now got it at 140k now I have 220k) I have had this hesistation on take offs, specially stop sign to stop sign, its like thetransmission hasnt released it pressure when coming to a stop and when you take off, you depending how much you press the gas pedal, it will hesitate normal around 2000rpm but it can do it in any gear depepnding how hard I accelerate, it start accelerating then drops about 200rpms ( a little kick I gues) then it start going again, this happens in maybe a second but its noticable... Yesterday I put all the valve body back togheter and it was shifting great, better then ever but after maybe 50km it started doing the same thing on take offs.. I always check for codes and none, when I got the car it needed a transfer case bearing which I did and changed the fluid along with the torque converted since it looked old and rusty and was out, and now this second fluid flush at 220k..No other issues and shifts very smooth only on take off it can have this hiccup..
th-cam.com/video/BkUbkGYpsBI/w-d-xo.html here' is a link to a video I made, @ 0:19 you can see it dropped rpms to 18000 from 20000 around as im accelerating and not letting off.
hi i changed my tranission control unit and no difference between the earlier one i had with problem. someone told me that vgs ecu need to programm. how it can be ?
I wonder if this issue has a lot to do with the claim Mercedes made a while back that that transmission fluid was sealed for life and the fluid did not need to be changed.
sealed as in... they would rather sale complete transmissions than cheap service parts! These transmission are highly sensitive to dirty contaminated oil with clutch shavings. That is why Hwy miles are better than city driving...
i have an 08 w204 tranny with a messed up 2 and 3 gear. i was thinking of swapping it and transferring the tcm/vgs from my original to the new one. its that possible?
Thank you :) By the way, can we use the temp gun for refill? I mean... will there be a lot of fluid level difference if we use temperature gun instead of the Star scanner?
+John Yon I'm not sure I understand the question, before you drain, make sure you have a tool to fill it back, you will have to fill about 7-8 qt, turn engine on, let it run about 20 minutes, than open drain plug and let excessive oil drain, make sure you plug over flow sleeve back before closing oil pan or you will drain all your fluids out...
what I meant was this: after we refill, we have to run the engine with tranny oil at 45 celcius and drain the excess oil. Star scanner will display the correct temp but I am not sure if the temp gun like Fluke will measure the oil temp correctly
Thanks for this informative video! My R230 with 722.9 (7-speed automatic) transmission went into limp mode yesterday. I have spent over $10000 with my mechanic here in Las Vegas but they never recommended me to do a transmission service. Today when they read the error codes it came out as P2725 when they say means "the internal check of component Y3/8y6 (B2 brake control solenoid valve (VGS)) has failed" and they say even though they can do everything such as refurbishing valve bodies etc, there is no cheaper fix than a total transmission overhaul and they quoted me $4995 for that. Does this sound reasonable to you?
Google Hen No!! Clearly indicated that you have an electrical internal issue with your transmission control unit and integrated VGS, you need to find someone that can install a new valve body and control unit! Do not rebuild the entire transmission, it’s not necessary.
The mechanic read out the adaptation data values too. They are: -20, 20, -18, -20, -20 -2000, 2000, -1380, -1300, -1220 They said that these values mean that the transmission is slipping too much. Would you say this conclusion is correct? As far as I can understand, they are within the range arent they? According to the research I have done, valve body is a more likely cause (perhaps even interference caused by metal particles in the oil) just as you point out! They did not do the Star road test as recommended by Mercedes and even though I told them I had seen an oil leak under the car (despite the fact I have gotten them to replace almost every engine seal there is) they did not investigate that leak...
I have a 07 s550 w221 that when in sport mode, when you come to almost a full stop,it downshifts from 2 to 1 kinda harsh. in comfort is no issue. any idea? I hear it's common on the .9 btw I've rebuild a 722.3 speed before
When you're in sport mode and coming to a stop, the car downshift to 1st is kinda hard. The downshifting from 2nd to 1st give a little kick. I am not sure when the trans fluid was changed. Probably before 2010 but I read somewhere the issue with the downshifting in sport mode is in the valve body and an upgraded piece of it fixes the problem.
Great info. Thanks for sharing. I have a 2014 E350. It comes with the updated transmission (7G Tronic Plus). When I called Mercedes dealer to ask about the service, I was told that the service interval for the updated transmissions (after 2012) is pushed back from 40k to 70k miles. Does that sound right to you? My car has 55k miles on it and I'm thinking to perform the service sooner than 70k, maybe at the 60k service.
Maybe a bad shifter.. If does go to D or R and still don't move it might be a bad control unit or no fluid or worse case a bad transmission or might also be a bad torque converter... Give more information, when it started, how, what did you notice before it happened etc...
+David Jacov Thanks David, I just returned from a 2 hour trip, the transmission never showed any signs of distress and functioned flawlessly. As I pulled onto my street it acted like it went into neutral (I thought I may have bumped the shift lever) However it would only go into park, no forward or reverse gears. I parked it in the near by yard for the night, the next morning it went into gear and I was able to drive it the short distance to my Driveway. After about five minutes in the driveway it did the same thing...Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you
Jeffrey Solveson you can't buy neither, Mercedes won't give it to you. It is a theft relevant part. You need to find a licensed Mercedes shop who can install TRP's
Hi, i have a spare transmission for my 07 c230 and i plan on swapping out the vgs because i recently got a code and it stays in first gear. Is it alright to change the vgs from one transmission to the other or do all of them need to be individually programed?
I clean the valge body and change the gasket and the filter ... I put the correct amount of oil and give me a Code "0845". Can signal Torque prom unit transmision control is implausible.
With the scanner in transmission give me a Code 016b the internal engine Torque computation performed in component Y3/8n4 (fully integrated transmission control (VGA) control unit) is faulty.
Pablo jacob Vizzuet martinez It sounds like you have a bad TCU. I worked on the 722.9 transmissions for close to 12 years and it always end up being the TCU, I tried several time to change other parts unsuccessfully.
The valve body is good. Its a 2007 GL450 and it was throwing 0717. I have a friend thats a mechanic who claimed he can change the sensors out, but in the process broke the housing for the sensors and tore the cable. Now it has code 0717 and 2767. So instead of taking to Mercedes, I'm looking for a cheaper way. So that why I asked if I bought a used one, can it be flashed to work plug and play with my truck or will you need the old one to transfer the data. How much would that cost to do?? Im trying to get this done ASAP
Mahmoud Hantouli if you don't have the Mercedes software and access to xentry login, I don't know if you can do it..the only way that I know is through the mercedes website.
Mahmoud Hantouli make sure you do the shifter teach in process as well You need to go to initial start after repair and do the gear selector teaching where you tell the shifter which gear it is in P R N D and P again then it will start
sir thank you very much for your help and to be honest to you I did miss this fuchsia and I will try it tomorrow morning my last question I didn't buy the new part I buy one one from the junkyard do you think it will work ? because after I reprogram it I see the plate successful registered to car Vin number please help
Mahmoud Hantouli what year and model is your car? If you have the same transmission as I do in this video, I doubt it will work, that's the 722.9, if you have the 722.6 you don't even need SCN, should be plug and play..
hi thankyou for a very informative video. I'm just about to purchase a Mercedes CLS 320 cdi here in the uk I've heard all about the problems with the 722.9 gearbox. The research I've done the garage I will be using who are a Mercedes Specialist recommend to have the gearbox oil/service done every 40000 miles, so to me that would be every 3yrs with the amount of mileage I do. thanks again for a great video new subscriber here ;-) have a great day
Mate what would be causing a shudder in the transmission of my 09 ML 350 CDI 4Matic When you accelerate from the light and between 30 klms thru to 60 klms there is a shudder once you pass 60 klms it disappears. Same when it comes a red light slight shudder at that 60 thru 30 klms.
My car CL550 w216 722.9. just… emergency mode😅…(Y3/8y3 error) only second gear. your video very very nice "HINT" for me sir☺👍i think…maybe… all dirty"iron dast"…dast→→valve code +―error⚠(i think) thank you very much.
Mahmoud Hantouli I'm not sure how you were able to do SCN on the used TCU, I was never successful, it always gave an error message that the TCU is already assign to a different vehicle but if you were successful just do the selector lever teachin process and the car should start and shift. Keep me posted
so video is not about repair...Solenoids can be cleaned with small magnet and speed sensors can be replaced.Don't see the point to replace the whole unit that cost like few k i suppose.Useless video.
The VGS has internal fault, it’s not the solenoids that go bad it’s the entire control unit and yes it need to be replaced, you can’t and shouldn’t attempt to fix them.
@@ukaszjurys2475 if you service it, you’re right, you can try and clean it take a magnet use some clean transmission fluid to clean it but when you have a fault code, you cannot clean it and hope it’s going to fix the problem. I tried so many times never been successful.
High performance is possible but only for a reduced time 😂
Thx MB Techs. You’ve helped me fix my 05 S500 trans live again. And helped me fix my 02 cl600 oil leak. Always have my respect
MessiaH0288 thanks a lot, people like you keep me going. Cheers.
Thanks for your videos I have a 2006 can transmission speed sensor be tested outside of the car.
Great video ... do you know which one of the solenoids is solenoid 'A' ?
It’s not the solenoids, it’s the whole control unit, I never had a case of bad solenoid, not even once. The control unit fails and can’t actuate the solenoid and you get a fault that the solenoid is bad, you need a new TCU.
@@MercedesBenzTechs Ah ok ... that’s what I feared 🙁
Just wondered if it was worth replacing the single solenoid if I could identify it, but you have answered my question.
Really appreciate the reply, thanks very much.
@@Calsonic8899 you can switch them, you have 2 different kind, move them around, you will get the same code..
You may need to rebuild your transmission... On manual when it slips it might be the clutch..
Hi there. I have a 95 Sl320. I lost reverse. Need to see about getting the transmission conductor replace. What's the average cost for this model.
My client 08-GL450 stopped shifting yesterday and I have tow it to my shop, please David should I go ahead and change conductor plate or flush out the transmission?
Mine had an issue at 47k and was serviced at MB at 39k so how was mine at maintenance issue? Its a defective unit, NOT lack of maintenance!
Benz are built to generate repair business regardless of high maintenance cost.
It may be a good idea to RESET ADAPTATIONS after an ATF service... different shift points and better oil pressures
👍🏻
Thanks
bucking was not there with old converter and this would be 2nd replacement converter
Bob Zeh did you tight all torque converter bolts right? Did you inspect fly wheel?
How many miles? Explain me what is bucking..
Yes tighten correctly and flywheel ran true. Jerking really bad not like a shutter
Ran adaptation on trans with star. Shifts fine once you get passed the jerking
Bob Zeh change valve body with conductor plate!
Do you need to make adaptations with MB software or just reinstall and run ?

Hi, I have ML 350 4matic 2014 with a 722.9. I do some trailer towing popup trailer) 110k miles. Serviced trans twice.
I would like to install an aftermarket trans fluid temp gauge and aux cooler.
Do you think this aftermarket gauge will interfere with the electronics and the cooler will change the press drastically?
Thanks
Good point, I’m not sure, you can try and check pressure on the new cooler.

Hi can you let me know where little filter comes from? the one you had near the solenoids
I also have access to xentry and the multiplexer ,
I have a question before I remove the faulty conductor plate do I retrieve the information from the faulty control unit? then after new control unit is installed do I transfer the information from the old control unit to the new one.
Or can I just install the clean control unit and scn code it ? Also I’m going to borrow the xentry tablet and mutiplexer so I will be in offline mode will I be able to scn code or do I have to be logged in with a D7 number and to the mb server? Thank you.
Jhosse Cruz thanks for your kind words, I always go through initial start of already installed control unit and do the whole installation including SCN which requires a D7, I never tried to transfer from one to another although it’s an option and I’m not sure if you do or don’t need D7 for that purpose but it’s always better to have an access to MB headquarters when you install new modules, and if you do have D7 go ahead and update ME (motor electronics) as well
have you had good success with changing speed sensors and clean/reinstal
thanks
Mrdubomb no!, tried more than 10 times, always came back with a bite in my butt, the only one it’s good for is the guys that sell the service.
ebay sells them sensors

What are the differences in the valve body/TCU assemblies that make some of them replaceable separately (i.e.
I mean like how on earth does the VGS software know you're lying about the hardware beneath it... lol

Hi
I'm planning to do a complete flush on my Mercedes W204 722.9 transmission, including torque converter drain and flush oil cooler, but after watching your video I would like to examine and clean any dirt from the solenoid screens and hall sensors of the control module
I have one question? will disconnecting the plug on to the TCM leave me with fault codes to clear after reinstalling, I don't want to create more problems, great videos by the way, Regards David

Mercedes Benz Techs is this the one? 10699 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025?
@Mercedez Benz Techs i got in the shop a c class stuck in second gear. according with directfix said to change the esp/bas
i changed front control arms on my CLK500 2006, and after i drove away, car went into limp-in mode. i got P0702 code .

Some people say it may be also the torque convertor, but I dont think so.. what do u think? 722.9 w212 e350 cdi 4matic 265bhp
You can try but it has to be the same part number, how many miles on your car?

For a faulty range sensor giving P705 code do you have to replace the whole conductor plate or you can replace the Range switch alone?
Honestly, I like your individual info. I'm in California by Thousand Oaks. I have a 2007 s550 with the 722.9. Do you know of any shops( that are reasonable) out here? My car more than likely has contaminated fluid because it has this rocking motion when I drive up hills and sometimes when I'm coasting along at 35mph. It's not shifting into those upper gears correctly unless I use my paddle shifters. Contaminated fluid could be causing my torque converter to be acting incorrectly.
thanks. but do you think the average DIY person can change gear box oil and filter on that 722.9. thanks and can you do a video on it. thanks again
it's not hard if you are comfortable learning on expensive cars.
Drain and refill are done through the dame plug 👍🏻
If E320 , 2008 Bluetec has the same transmission, how do you perform a transmission flush? What do you recommend?
Thank you very much!
It's the same way, transmission is the same
is the valvebody interchangeable. i heard from a mercedes benz dealership that i could change the valve out of one transmission into another as long as the electronic conductor plate is good. i was trying to do that for a transmission swap in a c300 w204
devin dodson you can't, the VGS, known as conductor plate is considered as a TRP (theft relevant part) and is designated to the vehicle it was initially coded in to, if you take one with or without the valve body it will not work on other vehicles however, you. An change the valve body if you wish without the VGS as long as you use identical part number (220 454 3607 etc).

Please? The feels smooth except for the transmission. When I bought the truck, it shifted suuuper smooth, like a dream. Please help!
Another thing, although the plate is new, the computer does not recognize that the plate has been replaced. As if nothing ever happened.
Best

hi I swaped the differential for my w202 CDI and mine is automatic and it stays only on one gear .. I went to the mechanic and checked my faults and it marked the constructor plates of the gear... the differential does it matters or no
Khalid Tonna no, conductor plate codes refers only to issues you may have with controlling the valves for up shifting or downshifting or internal speed sensors
can I try cleaning the conductor plate conductor plate instead of replacing it if I just got the code p0717 turbine speed sensor no circuit it is stuck in first gear and won't shift out
No, its internal
hi thank you for your video
like to know the new valve body need to be reprogram or just fit in and it would work.
SCN coded (serial calibration number) only by a designated shop.. 2004 and up on S class and 2006 and up on all other classes...if you use a virgin VGS and don't correctly introduce it to the car(with xenetry) it will not work. You can NOT program a used one!
@@MercedesBenzTechs do any indi mechanics have the ability to do SCN?
Pete Alias we do.
Code: 001737"
Every time I got this code it end up being a bad VGS (control unit) save your money and change it
Hi I have a mercerdes ml320 w164 2006 model I have issue with the transmission it will go into Drive and reverse ok but when the gas is pressed the vehicle will not move can you please advise is this common problem with TCM module going faulty I am due to get it diagnosed with a star machine soon just wanted some advice I do have a faulty rear ABS sensor someone said this could also cause my vehicle to do the above and not move when in drive or reverse gear.
rangzeb hussain before you spend money on TCU change the speed sensor, you can clear the fault codes and see if the car moves.

Hello thank you for your video ,
i'm a GLK Class owner and i have issues with my gear box 2010 70.000 Km , sometimes it jerk when downshifting the gears automatically !
I am facing the issue u speak of solenoid going fault because of lack of change of transmission oil and now i have a fault code of solenoid d
i wanted to know isthere a way to clean the contacts so the issue is solved i have tested the solenoid via 12v supply and it clicks and also checked omgs
please help

Kashish Chadha From my experience it is never the solenoid, it's always the TCU. You will have to change your TCU.
exactly that's what I have understood from forums as well
wanted to know is it possible in any way I can clean it with transmission fluid or something that will solve the dirty contact issue on my TCM??

I have a 2006 s500 which goes to limp mode on cold start after driving for 500 metres. When i restart it ,tkhe problem goes away.
Any help,please!
Which year s550 should I buy to not come into this problem.
2022
Hey great video! Q. question about to change my 07 e320 trans do I have to use my old VGS and install to new trans? Thanks!
Yes, it’s like a key, belong to one car and can not be used on another car.

I always check for codes and none, when I got the car it needed a transfer case bearing which I did and changed the fluid along with the torque converted since it looked old and rusty and was out, and now this second fluid flush at 220k..No other issues and shifts very smooth only on take off it can have this hiccup..
th-cam.com/video/BkUbkGYpsBI/w-d-xo.html here' is a link to a video I made, @ 0:19 you can see it dropped rpms to 18000 from 20000 around as im accelerating and not letting off.
ltwargssf R you need to look into your torque converter.
It has a brand new torque converter and it didnt solve the issue..

Uljber Kolonja can you be more specific about the question
did you replace transmission ATF and service filter on time?
If not the next Benz doctor visit is about to hurt your feelings and your savings
👍🏻
I wonder if this issue has a lot to do with the claim Mercedes made a while back that that transmission fluid was sealed for life and the fluid did not need to be changed.
sealed as in... they would rather sale complete transmissions than cheap service parts!
These transmission are highly sensitive to dirty contaminated oil with clutch shavings. That is why Hwy miles are better than city driving...
i have an 08 w204 tranny with a messed up 2 and 3 gear. i was thinking of swapping it and transferring the tcm/vgs from my original to the new one. its that possible?
devin dodson yes, make sure you note the serial number behind the 722.9 and find identical part number or you will have issues later on
i have a 2012 ML350 4matic (40k miles)... do you recommend the flush method or just drain (w/ torque converter) and fill ? Thank you:)
Better drain, take oil pan out change filter and refill.
But I think you can wait a little longer, 50 to 65k...
+John Yon yes, you should be fine.
They are:
-20, 20, -18, -20, -20
-2000, 2000, -1380, -1300, -1220
They said that these values mean that the transmission is slipping too much.
Google Hen time to find a new technician
I have a 07 s550 w221 that when in sport mode, when you come to almost a full stop,it downshifts from 2 to 1 kinda harsh. in comfort is no issue. any idea? I hear it's common on the .9
btw I've rebuild a 722.3 speed before
A little more information would be nice, when did it start, have you done anything to it so far, what's the service records, how many miles...
+Arlind86 very common
+David Jacov any idea what needs to be changed in the valve body to fix the 2nd to 1st downshift harsh kick in sport mode.

How much would cost for this repair?
2007 R320 will not go into any gear, no codes...any ideas?
After about five minutes in the driveway it did the same thing...Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Can the conductor plate be clean
Yes
what is the cost to replace the TCM?
Richard Atkins depends on year and model but if valve body needs to be replaced too it’ll cost around $2,000
Richard Atkins depends on year and model but if you need valve body too you are looking at about 2k$
just a transfer of data from one TCM to another.
Richard Atkins impossible, you need a new valve body with TCM. Part awW with 2k
