As Norwegian, I was a kid going down to NZ back in 1994 just to do some white water kayaking after leaving the big water season up in Nepal and doing climbing in Thailand. Kiwi Police woke me up in some tiny car (Holden I think it was called?) - and them police did not instantly call me a criminal. They just woke me up and asked if I was fine parked in a random place.
Here is another important part - I got to see "Once we were warriors" theatrically in NZ - and I got to pick up a book called "The Bone People" by a poet called Keri Hulme that informed My life a lot while playing with water and friends. (I got the news too -Yay Keri thank you - isolation was a thing even back then - as was history)

its called a welfare check. Someone probably saw you asleep in the car and was concerned so called the police. They send a couple of cops to check that everything is ok. I have a daughter with special needs, new neighbour didnt know and heard her being very loud so rang the police who came and did a welfare check, They just needed to see her then all smiles and away they go, lots of apologies from them for disturbing us. Good thing is now the police know we are here and that means come christmas time they bring around presents for her.

The Police do their job like any other country. We don't carry arms but it doesn't mean they are not without one close by. Like other countries everyone has their grievances with cops but because we have a multi-cultural force here, it leaves no room for discrimination otherwise you won't last that long. If you don't want them on your door step, then don't give them a reason to be there. We are a safe country but we also have gangs and the normal bad guy. It doesn't take much to catch the bad guy/gal cos the Police use social media to catch them and we have more good people than bad. As for the gangs, if you don't want them in your life, stay out of theirs.

This was obviously a small selection of Police life in New Zealand (Aotearoa).... like Canada 🇨🇦 everything governmental is bilingual (minimum).... there's always the quirky Kiwi sense of humour, everybody in this was a serving member of the New Zealand Police, except the kuds.... that really was the Chief Commissioner of Police, kind of like seeing the Head of the FBI in the ad, but you'll note distinctly not in an office, rather what appeared to be a press briefing in a conference room, actually in the park.
As for the "missing" pieces, there's all the "Roads" Police, like Motorway (Highway) Patrol, accident investigation, forensics, legal (ie. Police Prosecutors - paralegals), mounted (horse / bicycle / motorcycle).... etc.
And the Cat(s) - they're a staple of most commonwealth police forces, good mousers, company for office staff... the station cat.

As a New Zealander I can tell you it's not that safe and is getting worse. I had to get my face reconstructed after an assault in 2003 and have been left with permanent brain damage and many other health related issues. Granted it is safer than alot of countries but we have a severe and growing methamphetamine problem which has led to alot of mentally unstable and violent behavior, especially in some of the smaller communities.

Its unfortunate what happened to you and i hope who did this gets theirs at the end but as a kiwi this ad was made almost 10 years ago designed for recruitment and this worked big time, recruitment numbers tripled the year after because it was focused on "do you care enough?" Perhaps NZ police need to bring out a new ad, but to say this ad didnt work is definitely wrong, i know because i have 2 mates and a cousin who joined because of the appeal of this ad. Best 2 million dollars NZ government has spent.

This came out after my assualt and things did change. I stand corrected. I also think you are right and we could do with a new add because where I live there is not many and they go to the neighboring city on the weekends to help leaving the town lawless. NZ police don’t carry guns on their person. People do get murdered but very rarely, and if that does happen then The police will know who did it. This radio station put this theory to the test “3 degrees of separation” and found it true, that every third person you speak to in NZ they will know someone that you know. Shows how small we are. Wound the window down and declared confidently, "It's a fair cop." I then had an "oh shit" moment as I realised the Sergeant was a blonde. She, otoh, was giggling like mad. I thought the guy running that said the lady was ruining his flow was an actor, but in general it is real cops that do these adverts. You should look up the one that the police are dancing, it’s pretty good. Several police force around the world did one, including several from the US. There are a couple of police stations that have a cat, they are more of a mascot but hang out at the station and sometimes go in the car with their “owner” and have a police vest, so cute. You guys would love it here in New Zealand. In general our police are good people and we aren’t afraid of them. Given the bad press I think I would be scared of US police shooting first and asking questions later. Our police are unarmed majority of the time, they have a shotgun in their car but have to get approval to use it. They have pepper spray and sometimes tasers. In general our citizens are unarmed, with weapons used for hunting. We are not allowed guns for self defence and pistols and automatic weapons are illegal here. Very different place.

All police vehicles have guns. 1 in a lock box in front passenger foot well (glock handgun) and either a shotgun or semiautomatic in the boot/trunk. The shotgun is normally loaded with beanbags or salt shots and the semiautomatic rifle is loaded with the same ammunition the army use.

The guns are there, just not flouted on the officers hip. Generally if there is a dangerous situation involving firearms the AR15's appear pretty promptly. Otherwise if someone is just getting out of hand and talk and persuasion fails its taser and pepper spray time.

New Zealand is very safe to pretty safe if you keep to well lit city streets. Suburbs are safe and gun violence is not common. NZ Police are trained to maintain good relationships with the civilian population and don't routinely carry weapons. However each police vehicle carries a variety of weapons in their car's truck, so quick access is available. Police officers are routinely armed on diplomatic protection duties and when on duty at an international airport.

There is still crime here like any other country and you are still vulnerable. There has been violent crimes and terrorist crimes here but not as frequent as many other countries. But as a born n bred kiwi I rank NZ around 97% safe. As far as the wilderness is concerned there are no predators or poisonous reptiles only like 2 poisonous spiders which one is an Australian spider.

NZ cops don't carry guns. Are there other countries where guns are not required? They have guns in their vehicles but they can't access them unless approved by their supervisor.

Our cops are,pro active, not reactive, and kiwi's being chilled people,so are our cops, wave out to them driving by, they'll wave back, that's how we roll bedsides, most NZ families have someone in the police force or knows someone who does but unfortunately there are some who think the law doesn't apply to them, very few,but thats all it takes to stuff up the good

It would be safe as with a population of 5.084 million pretty sure Brisbane's population is just over 5 million and it's safe, I'd still bet NZ is safer though 😁
