I was reading a 1947 Shortwave Mag where the RSGB were urging people not to listen to those saying we were about to lose the 5m band. There were a lot of people experimenting on 5m judging by the reports.

Interesting look back at the old radio mags.

19:38 EF91 as a phase splitter? Why? Did they happen to have some left over? were they super cheap? The socket was cheaper? How random.

I am allways interested, to see 'over the end of our own soup-dish', what other countries had made in the past.
I'm also born at the end of (October) 1962, so we are in the same age.
Old pals, with not enough hair on top, ... !
(mine are 'very long' by the moment, ... )
Made my midde-school, and learned my profesion, as an graduated electrician (3 and 1/2 year in DL ! )
Met a nice girl in 1980, who gets my XYL , later.
Then I got my licence without morse-code, (all above 144MHz, an only 75 W max. power) in 1989.
A very long time, doing only VHF/UHF and above, with some good succses.
You needed a proper behavior on the band, handling and nerveves like steel- ropes, to manage some of the contests, during this times.
    - We where young those days! -
2003 when the 'CW- test' was obsolete, for short- wave permission, a second 'spring', in my HAM-radio life should begin, .... !
Children where small, a house was buildt, and the money was short, ... no time for super-duper expensive TRX-'es and antennas.
Taking a 'nap' from HAM- Radio, but not complete, allways been arround, but not so regulary, than before.
When 42 years in my job were over, (worked for over 20 years in the industrie, and before this, as an craftsman/skilled worker/fore-man in a small company, wich goes out of bussiness in 2001. )
    - Insolvence is the term for this ! -
As I worked then for a big backery company, and repaired and maintained, all the electrical and mechanical mashines, in over 70 backing-shops. (They are all where Franchise- partners)
Driving my full equiped VW Bus, (3,5t long body, high rooftop) with a complette 'working- shop set' inside. I drove more than 50.000 km a year, with my 'working-ride'. (Needed 6 'new' cars, during my time there! The 'best' with a little bit more than 490.000km, and the worst with 'only' 169.000km !)
All around the south-west part of Germany, from Saarbrücken to France, from Luxembourg to Mainz, Bitburg and Trier, down to Karlsruhe, ... and sometimes a little more.
I must leave my beloved old work and job, to retirement. Got some serious problems with my spinal cord and the 'back-bones' during my whole working time.
Had 5 nucleus prolapses, in 28 years. I am 'happy', to be still a 'pedestrian' until now. Two surgeries, with no notible efforts. Beeing in 'pain- reducing programm' for more than 28 years now, and 'Fentanyl-transdermal patches' are one of my 'best friends'.
Without, this medicament ( or other sustitudes, during nearly 3 decades) I would not be here, anymore.
When the doctors say, and the administration too, ... 'enough with the work, step one, or two, steps back, and enjoy your time at home now, ... ! '
You can count on the fingers of one hand, that not everything is allright now, ... !
Health is not the best, and I am feeling like a 90 year old grandpa, that I am not to be, until now. And never will get one, as my daughter stated to me, some time ago, ... ! What a strange kind of world, that we are living now, ...
Money is now short again, house is all payed, and proper made, ... and the next 'level' could now begin, ... but this is an other 'card', that not only I had to 'play' (alone!).
    - But, it is the way it is. -
I could not 'change' everything in my life, as I want it, so that it looks 'perfect' or 'right' for me.
So I enjoy the rest of my 'running time', until the 'zero' will show up, in the 'dial- down counter'.
So I could swap the places, from here, to 'nowhere'.
Or what ever, anybody will call this place, ...
(As Mrs. K. Bush said in 1984:
"And if I only could, I made a deal with good, that we could change our places. I want to runnin' up that hill, runnin' up that street, running up that building, ... if I only could, ... !" )
    - Yes, if I only could! -
I enjoy your CB repairs and 'sometimes' the HAM radio repair and 'alterations' you do to some of the radios, also.
Please take some 'conversations' from CB to HAM- radio.
(It is only a suggestion, but maybe, some more people are interrested in such things?)
    Why not use a CRT-radio
(Super-Star, an 'Export- CB radio' !)
Instead of 27MHz, you can use it perfectly on 28MHz, and, ... whats about a simple 'transverter' for 27 (or 28MHZ) to the 2m- Band? (using it also in SSB and FM) so 5W output should be enough, for the first time.
A 'Yaesu FT-817' is the same power, on short- wave, and also on 2m band. So many HAM's, usining such a radio with good succses, couldn' t be so wrong?
Some older PLL- chips (PLL002) could easily converted from 27MHz to 28MHz, when 'swapping' some of the 'address-lines', on the PLL- chip. Having a 28MHz- rig than. No more 'See-Bee', only HAM- ware around.
A 40 (80/120or more) 'channel' on 10m FM radio (AM in the USA), is a welcome 2nd or 3rd radio for the HAM, who has all the 'things', he never needed! Or a nearly free' 'back-up' radio, in the 4WD- ride, in the Garage ...
The newpaper/magazine 'review', is a welcome kind of a 'sidekick', now.
Very intersting that you, on the big 'chanel-island', will also only cook with (boiling/hot) water!
    (Hi Hi ! ! !)
Just keep it going that way, and all the best for the comming future, for you, and also Mr. Chippy.
If you find some mistakes in my writing, and/or grammar, be so fair and see, that English is not my native tounge, ... It is very long ago, that I visited the UK, the last time.
My children where not born that time, my daughter is 32 years old now, ... my son is 29 right now.
    So all the best, ...

Hello Markus, I rescued this huge comment from the 'sandbox' as it mentions SSB, which this channels is specifically not about. However, thank you for taking the time to write this & good luck with your health issues.
