“Bushido is realized in the presence of death. It is realized when one chooses death instead of life. There can be no other reasoning.” - Hagakure, Book of the Samurai
i remember reading a comment saying this song was sad because duk koo kim died for nothing - and i thought "no, its sad because he died for everything"
This song has some of the most intense dynamics and flow of anything I've ever heard. The whole section from 4:39 - 9:00 is much like a boxing match in the way it engages and intensifies, then releases and recedes, then comes back into contact, until it finally beats you down and knocks you out at the end. I wish the uploader would have included the last part of the song because it's truly awe inspiring.
If anyone is reading and hasn’t, listen to the album version, it’s 5 minutes longer and those final 5 minutes are one of my favourite moments in all of music.
favorite part: the tiny xylophone notes that appear and leave just as quickly, and whatever the stringed instrument is that comes in and dominates the outro
One of my 5 favorites songs (maybe my best song ever) I will listen to this masterpiece till the end. Mark Kozelek's voice is so overwhelming, deeply lyrics and hypnotised by the melodies and guitars.... Discovered it almost 10 years ago and still fascinated by this creation.
Kozelek wrote this in light of when Katy died. I've always viewed this as Katy Song (Red House Painters) part 2. It's a reaction to her passing and the sense of longing ever ensuing afterward. She went too young, only in her 30s. I've been playing this (the full version, actually) behind clips of Kobe Bryant tributes. Such a silly match would normally strike me as, well, silly. But Kobe was a childhood icon to me, even though I didn't play basketball. He went far too soon. This song for me will probably now always remind me of Kobe on top of all the other losses I associate with this song. Sad, but it's comforting. A lovely death and longing song. And just like us following the hard times of these tragedies, the song just keeps going on and on through that heartbreaking refrain. RIP Kobe
@@sleeepyQ73 Funny, I just listened to this earlier tonight and was surprised when I received notice that someone replied to my comment made 11 years ago. Great song♥
Strange story...A boxer dies after his fight, mother then soon commits suicide and the referee of the fight also commits suicide...Also became the begining of the end of Boom Boom Mancini's boxing career...Rest in Peace...
I've always felt like this song was Mark's way of saying that he's going to die in the ring, just like Duk Koo Kim. Judging by how prolific he's been during his later years, I'd say he's kept true to his word.
Looking out on my roof last night Woken up from a dream I saw a typhoon coming in close Bringing the clouds down to the sea Making the world look gray and alone Taking all light from my view Keeping everyone in And keeping me here with you Around you now I can't sleep no more, baby Around you still Don't want to leave yet Woken up from a dream last night Somewhere lost in war I couldn't feel my feet or hands I didn't feel right anymore I knew there I'd die alone With no one to reach to But an angel came down And brought me back to you I'd rather leave This world forever, baby Than let life go The way it's going Watching an old fight film last night Ray Mancini and Duk Koo Kim The boy from Seoul was hanging on good But the pounding took to him And there in the square he lay alone Without face, without crown And the angel who looked upon him She never came down You never know What day is gonna pick you, baby Out of the air Out of nowhere Come to me once more, my love Show me love I've never known Oh, come to me once more, my love Show me love I've never known [2x] Oh, sing to me once more, my love Words from your younger years Oh, sing to me once more, my love Words from your younger years [2x]
Even though Mark has been accused of some terrible things recently, this is still a great song And I'll still keep listening to his music, no matter what happens
Whatever the case, this song, in fact, this whole album is magical. I've been a Kozelek fan since his RHP days and still a huge fan today. Depressing, dark and even somewhat morbid, Kozelek is a songwriter at his best.
Ghosts of the highway indeed! This album holds a very special place in my life to me, I love music so much and this record is some of the most important and special music that I can relate to. Incredible songwriting, like Nirvana or the Beatles, Nick Drake. Big kissesxxx
No matter when I drive through northern Alabama, western Maryland or upstate New York with this song blaring in my head, it always makes me feel great, which is weird considering the content.
This is sobering, uncompromising music. The pain he has for Katy's death bleeds through the guitars and I'm not sure if there're many other songs like this.
In its original version, this track lasts 14 minutes... Duk koo Kim was knocked down during the 14th round ... RIP warrior. This song honors him, and all fighters.
I play with Mark in SF in his tenderloin studio . Played live the guitars are incredibly loud and ring out chimming thru these old fender amps/ Its fucking magic. Time seems to slow down

Looking out on my roof last night
Woken up from a dream
I saw a typhoon coming in close
Bringing the clouds down to the sea
Making the world look gray and alone
Taking all light from my view
Keeping everyone in
And keeping me here with you
Around you now
I can't sleep no more, baby
Around you still
Don't want to leave yet
Woken up from a dream last night
Somewhere lost in war
I couldn't feel my feet or hands
I didn't feel right anymore
I knew there I'd die alone
With no one to reach to
But an angel came down
And brought me back to you
I'd rather leave
This world forever, baby
Than let life go
The way it's going
Watching an old fight film last night
Ray Mancini and Duk Koo Kim
The boy from Seoul was hanging on good
But the pounding took to him
And there in the square he lay alone
Without face, without crown
And the angel who looked upon him
She never came down
You never know
What day is gonna pick you, baby
Out of the air
Out of nowhere
Come to me once more, my love
Show me love I've never known
Oh, come to me once more, my love
Show me love I've never known
[2x]
Oh, sing to me once more, my love
Words from your younger years
