      It really is a peaceful little park area. Lots of people go there to have pictures made, weddings, reunions and parties. I don't think it was quite so popular when the movie industry used it though.

      Yes they really have ruined the inside of this.

    • @jessicateer-smith1941
      @jessicateer-smith1941 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was never an active mill, and the interior was never finished out. It was always a concrete shell with rock veneer. It was built specifically for the park.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is actually a piece of art done by Dionicio Rodriguez. He specialized it doing realistic concrete which is what you see with the mill and the bridge looking like wood. He has piece in a cemetery in Memphis I have seen. Sort of a shrine and then also a piece I have seen in San Antonio. There are many other pieces He has done all over the country. That being said he has been gone since 1955 and it is art history as well as movie history in this case.

    Pity the Old Mill only had 5 seconds of fame in the movie's titles! I notice that many more trees have grown up around the building since it was filmed in 1939 ... quite naturally of course! It's funny, I've just come across your delightful video, and it was only the other day when I was viewing the clip of the opening titles of the movie that I was thinking they didn't use that location at all in the story. I guess they were trying to build an image of "olden times", in order to set the scene and the tone of the movie.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do believe you were right about them trying to build the setting for the movie. It was done by a famous artist that has things all over so I think someone must have been a fan of his. It's sort of a shame they didn't use it more though. Since the filming of the movie a lot has been added. Lots of trees and shrubbery as well as neighborhoods. Thank hou so much for watching!

      @@RhettyforHistory - I enjoyed it - I like your style. Thank you! Just a related thought I have about visiting movie sets - I am from the UK and I visited Salzburg in Austria a few years ago. Especially the Mirabell Gardens where some famous scenes were filmed.

    stalagmites v stalactites - remember, mites crawl up, tights fall down! Or so my old geography teacher told me! I’ve always thought, though, that it could easily be the other way around. Lol. However, it must work as I’ve remembered it after all these years.

    GWTW was before my time but my mom LOVED it. She talked about it a lot especially as her dementia worsened. I wish I would’ve known this was in LR when we went to the Antiques Roadshow in 2015. Although during the Antiques Roadshow the weather was just like Dallas/Fort Worth: 108 and 90% humidity. At least it would’ve been one more thing we (my mom, daughter & I) shared. She wanted to visit all the national parks before her dementia worsened so we took ~90,000 miles of road trips. It was completely worth it. Lots of laughter and craziness ensued. Our dog, Ella went with us, escaping during hunting season and park rangers unable to get her bc hunting was so close to the park. Thank God for stickers-her paws were full of them so I could catch her easily- no I didn’t want her to suffer but since neither my mom or I could walk well it was a blessing. I removed the stickers and she suffered no ill effects. 😊 How in the world do you find these places? They’re not the same places everyone posts on YT. I also like how you include your family. Hopefully they’ll have an interest in history too!

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you made some special memories with your mother and daughter as well as your dog! That's fantastic! Nothing better than a little roadtrip and family time building a memory. Going to one of those Antique Roadshows would be great! We love antiques. I also love National Parks and State Parks like your Mother did. I think more people are visiting Disney World and Disney Land and less people are visiting those parks. I'm the opposite of that. I like showcasing things all around us that people have little to no idea about. Some of it is just things I've researched, stumbled upon or been suggested. I have a wide range of interests but I love history and roadside attractions. I enjoy cemeteries because they are full of history. There are many people in there and each one of them has a different and unique story. I'm always trying to see out famous final resting places to cover. Some of them are really well known and others are ones that should be really well known. But I also enjoy just documenting something is different or odd. No matter where I have been I have always heard people say there is nothing to see here or nothing to do here. And no matter where I have been I have always been able to find something. No matter where you're at there is always something to discover and something new to try. It might be a museum, city park, cafe etc. We just have to open our eyes and be adventurous. Do things like you did with your family and dog. Those things like that people don't forget. My wife loves history. We like it all but share a big love for the WW2 area. Then I have a big love for the old west era and she has a big love for the English and Scottish history. At some point we will make our way over there as well. Our goal is to cover the lesser known things. Just like here. Our kids don't really have the same passion for history that we do. Maybe that will change for them some day. There are times where the youngest does a little. She does enjoy the parks and outdoors. The others hate the outdoors and parks. Everyone is different though and that's what makes this world interesting. Thank you for watching and commenting. It's much appreciated!
