Assault Rifle Slings | Tactical Rifleman

  • In this video we cover Slings that the US military uses on their Battle Rifles.
    Here, at Tactical Rifleman, we really do read the comments. Most of them are total jackassery; but every now and then one of you will ask a legitimate question or have a request for a video. We do our best to answer all of these. If you ask a good question and we don’t answer it; it’s probably because we have ALREADY ANSWERED the SAME QUESTION a dozen other times (often on the same video). That said, we do get questions that warrant a little more than a two sentence answer.
    I common question is “What kind of Sling is on your Rifle?” or “What do you think of blaa blaa blaa Sling?” So, hence, here is your “Sling” video.
    First, up front, I’m not gonna tell you what kind of Sling mine is (but I think it is ATS), because I hate pimping one brand over another. There are lots of great companies out there that are all putting out great gear. I don’t want to get one brand or another mad at me. All I ask is that you try to use quality gear by a reputable company. Stay away from all the counterfeit shit coming out of China.
    Next, I want everyone to understand that I don’t carry “this” or “that” just because it is “sexy” or politically correct. Rather, I carry what I think is the best piece of kit for the current situation. Slings are a perfect example of this. I started carrying a Leather Sling on my first M-21 sniper rifle, because that’s all I had and that was what I was taught to shoot with. I used a 2-point short black nylon sling on my M-16 because that’s what we were issued. It sucked; so we cannibalized into the first 3-point slings, and they have since continued to morph into the slings you see used today.
    I won't pimp single point versus multipoint slings. They all have strong points and weak points. Educate yourself and choose what works best for you in your situation.
    Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

    I love the 2 point sling on my AR. It works great when I'm out hunting, I can walk and scour the terrain for game and it allows me to quickly bring my rifle up to my point of aim. I was gonna do the one point sling, that was until I seen a guy at the range one day running one, no vest or body armor, just a t-shirt, he dropped his rifle to switch to his pistol and his rifle gave him a sweet little love tap on the baby makers. Damn near put him to his knees, which is the last thing I want to happen and I've noticed running with a 2 point, my baby makers are safe, lol.

    Can you do a video on the applications of night vision? Because I see a lot of guys (civilians) buying thousands of dollars worth of night vision equipment when their usage scenario revolves around just staying undetected, rather than engaging people from the shadows (which from a use of force standpoint would be highly illegal). People don't seem to have a good understanding of what the mission of night vision equipment is, they just think "I want to do stuff at night. Therfore I need to spend thousands of dollars on night vision. " I was hoping that a professional with as much experience as you could elevate the public understanding of when you NEED night vision and when you don't. Cause a lot of people are wasting money not knowing really what it is that they're trying to do.

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That is a great topic, we actually recommend people include night vision in their "bug out bag" or "get home" bag because like you stated it is advantageous to go undetected, if things hit the fan you don't want to make it easy for people to find you at night. we did a video on it, give it a watch and let us know what you think: th-cam.com/video/9KsrKYKw6iY/w-d-xo.html

      I agree with part of your statement. Some people buy NV for the cool factor or to play operator. But at the same time it’s there right to spend their hard earned money on whatever toys they want. Some people buy cars that can go 200mph. But the speed limit is 55. I’ve spent plenty of money on things some would consider a waste. The other side of the coin is also your intent. Like Carl said. It’s a great tool for a get home bag or kit. You also have the prepper mentality that wants to be ready for a SHTF moment. If your going to train to defend yourself and your family why not train on every piece of equipment you can. And give yourself every advantage to win the fight. Just my two cents. And this is coming from a guy that can’t possibly afford NVG.

    • @CircaSriYak

      The way I look at it is this: if my goal is strictly to go unnoticed, I'm going to pick up one of those photon freedom lights with the covert nose and blue beam. Blue is a narrow band of light that scatters quickly at distance, and also is the color that your cones (latent night vision) picks up the least easily. Once you combine all that, and dial it down to its lowest setting, you will be very very hard to notice in the shadows indeed, but you'll still be able to navigate obstacles. And it's a far more cost effective way to make darkness your friend that few people know about.

    • @jonathananatrella2964
      @jonathananatrella2964 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think what OP is getting at is that a lot of guys try to buy their way to efficiency which you simply cannot do with a diminishable skill like shooting. I completely agree with them on that front, the question a private citizen must always ask themselves is: "Will this really be an improvement over the same money being spent on ammo and training?" A lot of people focus on the high speed cool guy stuff and as a result overlook a lot of the important basics that aren't as "tacticool" as gunslinging. As the saying goes, you're either a weapon who carries tools or a tool who carries weapons.
      Honestly, I don't even recommend most people get a gun first for their EDC. I'd rather them get first aid kit + tourniquet first, learn how to use that, and focus on their empty handed skills and de-escalation. Unless you are in a gang area or a combat zone, bullets are going to be pretty low on the list of "things that are useful in many scenarios". Not to mention the vast majority of assaults don't turn lethal. Like someone getting into a fistfight with you over a parking spot or something is still an issue but it doesn't automatically make it a good idea to ventilate them. (It is, however, a very good idea to give them a mouth full of OC spray. Intermediate force multipliers are vital tools in a civilian's EDC.)

    Good stuff,what I would expect from the SF community. I retired from the Corps back in 2012. During my time in I was fortunate enough to work with a number of spec ops units at various times overseas. I will have to say I truly enjoyed my time with the SF teams the most. Down to earth, knowledgeable, and respectful showing no condescension towards us regular old Marine types. I always appreciated that, and because of that, as the ops chief for that particular AO, I went out of my way to support. Cheers!

    Amen brother. The two point sling is the best set up. And I dont even bother buying name brand slings. I just buy a 5 or 10 yard roll of nylon webbing and and a pack of tri-glides. Making up a sling costs about $3.50.

    Ferro Concepts Sling. I've tried about 20-30 slings until I found them. Outstanding quality. Has Held up very well with the constant rubbing on my rail amd the absolute abuse i have put it through. The Adjusment strap is actually a ringed tab amd a runbery texture which allows you feel the tab and get a firm pull everytime. The sling I have ran the last 3 year's is The Ferro Concepts. The Vicker and HSGI slings are excellent as well. Hope This Helps one of you

    Love the SR -25! I was told back in 1995 it had just been awarded a contract with USASOF, and that the commander of the Unit had just retried and was given one at a party for him, he was the first civilian to own one. My buddy who clubbed to death an insurgent with a M240G, met a Unit sniper named "John", and told him his buddy back home was the second civilian to own one! "John " Said "Your coming with us!" My best friend said that was the Divine Intervention that saved his life , being with them Army guys, and said because of it, he got to go with them, and do what they do, and that they treated him like he was one of them! God bless our troops... Especially all of them!

    I used a version of a 1 point sling on my SAW in Iraq, I think it was called a "wolf hook" or something like that. connected over the shooting shoulder with a carabiner and connected to the stock like the 1 point you showed but always dropped to the shooting side if I let it down and had a quick release. Basically 1 piece of webbing. PITA with the weight of a SAW but lots of guys liked them on the M4. Would like to get your take on those vs. the others you showed. I don't even need to be a veteran to say that yeah, two point sling just on the neck is just heavy sooner or later. Depending on what you have (see, I'm an airsofting internet ninja, so I have an original Russian sling on that thing that looks kinda like an AK) your neck might get really fed up of the constant sling movement. Tell you what, I'll take the suggestion to heart, see if I feel better with the sling being longer. Right now, it can comfortably fit around the front sight post (let me tell you, if a person like me tells you they use their sights, take them with a grain of salt. BB has none of the ballistic qualities of any real round in the world) when not in use. So thanks, I'll start wearing it around the arm. And I'm not sarcastic, just never occured to me.

    I have a DPMS Oracle quad rail and the only attachment for a sling on it is a ring on the stock. How can I attach the other end for a two point sling? I currently just use my shemagh but it loosens after a bit and makes my rifle slump.

      You said "Quad Rail." Buy a Sling-QD attaching point for your rail. Easy.

    One arm sling method is great for bolt and long guns but also semi shotties. Being able to get a handgun out while fumble fkin mags or rounds in a panic is comforting.

    My sling can work as a 1 or 2 point , but 90% of the time I use the 2 point.

      Thanks, I know it is ugly, but I run what works for me. I often train classes using NVDs, so I run a IR laser & illuminator. You have to have a visible light and back-up sights. The rest is just a standard shorty AR with red-dot.

    Your advice is on point. I did run a 3 point sling on my assigned service M4 and it did seem to get tangled on eqipment and not function well. The 2 point sling for me does work alot better, I can't speak for anyone else out there. Train how you fight and hone your proficiency. Time and sweat on the range or in the field= less bleeding in combat. Good video Carl, keep the good information coming as well as the rest of your battle buddies. Highly informative.

    New to your channel and already loving what I'm seeing! I run AR-10 & REPR and have been having a bitch of a time finding anyone who can recommend a proper 2 point sling and or how to effectively use it. I know your systems are more for M-4s and their variations because it's more common, but based off your experience with the SR25, do you have any suggestions?

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the same gun only bigger. Some guys would have leaned towards a padded sling. Honestly, I would still run the same sling as my ARs, so my muscle memory would be the same. Thanks for watching, TR

    Great video! Having trouble locating QD sling swivel with fastec buckle, any suggestions? And which do you prefer attaching QD swivel to inside of buttstock closest to body or to the outside away from body? Thank you!

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can't find the sling you want... cut it and add your own Fastex Buckle. I prefer QD on inside, but know guys that run it on outside. Personal preference.
