I love doing wheelies on my road bike! It trips people out and makes folks think that roadies aren't sissies.

Unless I missed your mentioning it, I would consider flat pedals way more important than a helmet or tire pressure. It's a lot easier and safer to learn on flats. Looping out while clipped in is suboptimal.
Hank and Blake are just two fun loving blokes who feed off each other's energy and the result is a fun video that makes you want to wheelie.
My wheelie ability is very similar to Hank's 😂 Definitely easier on a MTB but I never really practice on my road bike for fear of breaking something.

I remember doing wheelies on my 20” wheel, banana seat, ape-hanger bar Sting Ray bike. Back in the mid 60s. Gawd, I’m a dinosaur.
I had the 70s version of that bike and I still miss it!!!!!
Ive been practicing riding without hands more to get used to eating and generally avoid stopping on rides. A wheelie sounds like a good way to stop riding for 6-8 weeks while my bones heal 😂

20" Schwinn Stingray clone I had as a kid was the best for wheelies-banana seat put one's weight right over the rear wheel, and the ape hanger bars gave one an upright position and plenty of leverage.

My issue is similar. Teetering to one side or the other. I can reach balance point pretty easily, it's the pedaling bit without affecting left/right lean which is difficult.
I always wished I could do this. I'm 60, so a trip to the hospital is a little more scary. But I'm gonna do it because GCN told me to.

As much as I’d like to try this, I think for my age, it’s high risk, low reward. 😅
I don't know how old you are, but I am 53 and one of my goals this year is to finally re-learn how to do wheelies. In my BMX days I could ride on my back wheel for as long as I wanted, and from that I know that once you've found the balance point and learn to trust on that, it really isn't that hard.
It's just that getting to that point is harder (and scarier) on a bike with a more forward leaning position.
I don't see it as risky though (except for my ego 🙃).
A little bit younger than you, but I don't have that BMX background the way you do. I'd imagine re-learning it would be much easier than trying to learn it for the first time. Good luck on your wheelies!

i never could keep from falling to the side like hank, i guess its just a matter of balancing with the knees and cockpit mostly.
How many takes did the Blake bike switch take because it was smooth.
Best to look straight ahead and keep arms outstretched. That will help with the side to side.
Even though I really don’t like mountain biking, I really love these collaborations with gmbn and the teaching of the skills. Always love seeing Blake and Dottie
I think Pogacar did this for 2 km in Alpes Maritimes area.
Two tips:
- keep your arms straight
- get someone to hold you at that tipping/balance point, so you know what it feels like and just how far back it is.
I've never considered doing a manual clipped in. Would feel sketch I always want to be able to save it walking. Not enough confidence I guess 😂

I'd love to be able to do a wheelie, but given how hard it is for Hank, I'm doomed (I'm old enough to be Hank's dad . . . ). I couldn't even do a wheelie when I was a kid on a 1960s "Stingray" bike!
