Just last night I wanted to make some brass hardware for a project, then today I find this. Fantastic!
I was right there with you taking mental notes then you proceed to hand file your own hinge pin from scratch. At that moment I just sat back and contemplated what it meant to stick to tradition. Wonderful work.
Those are so beautiful. One thing that would make your “pin” a little easier to make is to place your block in a drill and spin it while holding some Emory cloth on one side.
This is the most beautiful book I have ever seen. I have really enjoyed watching the whole series.

I watched the complete serial on making the medieval book and, along with this, they raised so many questions i almost got dizzy. Surely you did not collect all those tools and equipment just to make one or two books, and it is quite obvious this is not your first time around the block making one of these works of art. So what do you do with them when you finish? Are they sold? Used as gifts? How many do you make in a year? Do you teach classes on making books like this? Is it just a really crazily specialized hobby?
This is by far not my first book, though it is my first gothic binding. I would say that this is in fact a specialized hobby that I subsidize by selling notebooks, journals, and marbled papers in my Etsy shop. And I do use many of my own notebooks on a regular basis. thanks for the questions!

Thank you for the video. A little advice from a colleague :). Brass becomes soft when heated and cooled rapidly. No need to bend hot.

Am aware of the
'professional' term of "furniture" now, however, 😊 I still view it as jewelry or bling. Like a man or woman getting dressed up for an evening out or hinges & pulls/knobs for cabinets in a kitchen or bath. When you opened the box in video #5, it was dazzling. It was to dress-up the book! It sure did!

Making the book is only half the job, now it needs something worthwhile writing in it.
You need a pair of smooth-jawed Knipex pliers for bending brass.

Wow, I’ve been thinking about something like this, but simpler. The extra sanding really does add interest. I like the marker and scribe method that you used. I was taught with tracing paper, but this seems a little more efficient. Great stuff. Thank you for sharing. Hugs, Julie 🥰

I anneal the brass before bending it so it doesn't break. And I solder the joints with copper-phosphorus solder or silver, if you don’t mind :)
Not at all! I'm very much an amateur metalworker so any advice is welcome. I have since learned the benefits of annealing and have experimented with soldering, both of which are great additions to my skills. Thanks for watching and commenting!

this awesome what you doing. You videos are best what me and my wife had been seen. You are showing not just steps but you all so show tools what you are using to make all those metal pieces and books!
That cause this "bad" thing that i want make all so similar book sens i like leather and metal work.
But one thing, you should do better polish on brass parts with extra fine water sandpaper like 6000 and final polish with polish paste and wool cloth.

Just my comments:
Perhaps I didn’t hear the audio well, but at 8:22, I think your saw blade is not quite tight enough, it should be a sharp high note (although it can be hard to hear with the piece on the blade). A taut blade reduces the chances of it breaking. Also a flex-shaft tool with sanding wheels would reduce the time and effort of all the filing.
13:07 Annealing the brass clasp should make easier to bend without the pliers marking it up

Thank you very much! I did consider soldering these but in the interest of both time and not wrecking them I opted not to. I may experiment with it in the future.

Your skill level hurts my brain! I cannot believe the mastery of your craft you have achieved! How long did it take you to learn all the skills necessary to complete a project like this?
'A bit of perseverance' - has to be the understatement of the year! These are magnificent looking pieces that reflect the amount of hard work you have put into this entire project from start to finish. This however is not a part that I'll try to emulate since I have neither the skill levels or the patience to produce anything even approaching this. A serious amount of thanks for this entire series.
One question for you - roughly how long from first conception of this project to the finished project? I'm thinking probable close to a year at least.

Thank you so much, I'm glad all the effort is appreciated. As for time, I started in mid-November 2021 and finished at the end of March, 2022, so well over four months from start to finish.
Your craftsmanship is impeccable. However, you should have cut the nail and used it for your hinge pin. It is a dissimilar metal, and much harder then brass. I regularly make hinges in my work of historic firearms, so I know this is also historic even back to Roman times, when they recognized brass and iron wore well together.

Me watching this video: * completely understanding that people don't get that even a clamp, a block of wood and a well placed bend made by hand can actually be more exact then precision engeneered equipment on somthing as mechanically organic in function as a book.* Nah. The work involved in creating these gorgeous books is simply astounding. They are works of art, and I don't know what I could write or draw in them that would do them justice.
Do you work with other metals besides brass? I love copper and bronze, I think they'd look beautiful as decorative elements on a book. Also, I hope you save the shavings off the brass. I'd use that like glitter!
I'm thinking of using copper on an upcoming book - still in the planning phase for that one though.

Thanks for your kind words. As for the brass, I haven't added anything to it yet, as I kind of like the idea of it taking on a patina. I may use some conservator's wax on it though now that you mention it. Thanks for the question!

I would say I enjoyed the bookbinding more. I did quite like working with the brass, but with eight corners to make it became rather repetitive, and the hand sanding took hours and hours to finish. Great question, thanks so much!
when I watched episodes 1 to 4, I was disappointed at the end with these trivial fittings of poor quality. They did not match this handcrafted, brilliant quality. Now that's the world championship. ❤

Propose tu a la vente des ajouts métalliques ? J'ai vu que tu vendais sur Etsy. Je travail sur du Laiton en 2mm d'épaisseur, ce qui est plus dur a couper. Je cherche des pièces simplement coupées, sans autres étapes, pour ensuite faire les ciselures et décors dessus. J'avais un ami qui pouvait les couper au laser mais hélas parti en retraite. Si tu propose quelques ventes de pièces coupées, envoie un message. C'est vraiment l'étape de la coupe que je ne peux plus faire aujourd'hui, je me limite au punching et ciselure des décors. Bravo j'ai adoré ton travail !

Did you have to shorten the arm of the clasp for the final fitment?
Yes I did, very well spotted! The book was a bit thinner upon final assembly, hence the modification.
