Alex Winter (Bill & Ted, Lost Boys) joins us this week to share his experience of being under the limelight since he was a child, unexpectedly hitting fame with Bill & Teds, and then leaving Hollywood for a much needed sanity break. Alex talks about his enjoyment for acting the lifelong friendships he’s been able to build with costars like Jason Patric and Keanu Reeves. We also talks about growing up with free thinking Bohemian parents, his love for creating documentaries, and burning out in Hollywood.

Why KEANU REEVES Was Upset About this Choice For BILL & TED #insideofyou #keanureeves
I remember watching this with my dad when it came out. It was one of the first movies I saw in the theater that wasn't a big Hollywood flick like Indiana Jones. I don't think that dad was impressed, but I sure was. At the risk of sounding dramatic, it changed my young outlook on life: "Be excellent to each other, and, party on, dudes!" Great interview, as always.
Thanks for the love, care and support.
It's a pleasure talking to you over here, where are you from??
Yeah dude.
It's a message for the ages.
you dont remember and you dont have a dad
🎶God gave Rock ‘n Roll to you…🎶
I genuinely, TO THIS DAY, get choked up during the scene where they accidentally get sent to the future, and they see the utopia they are destined to bring into being. It reminds me of that scene in Star Trek: First Contact, where Geordi is fanboying over the guy who was the first human to do a warp engine test. And they guy is like "what's so special about me?" And Geordie is like "...are you kidding?! SO many things were made BETTER because of what you did in this time! You fundamentally altered the course of human history, and put it on a better trajectory!" That was the silent feeling I got from the collection of people, all strumming air guitars while the song bursts out "We'll be dancing in the streets all night!!!" It was such an optimistic moment, in a film that is already bubbling over with optimism. I mean shit, even writing this now, trying to describe how it makes me feel, is making me get teary eyed. LOVE that film.
Every teenage garage band dreams of changing the world....this is the story of the band that actually did. It's such a simple, cheesy, yet AMAZING premise for a film.
Alex Winters played the leader so well and Keanu played the follower so well. It was perfect. "Shut up Ted!" Lol
His best role was in Death Wish 3
@@hagestad lol. As one of Gavin O’Herlihy’s minions. Yeah, I remember that shit. 🤣
My dad was a stuntman in Bill and Ted. You can see him in the background in the mall scene when Genghis Khan is destroying stuff with a bat.
@@stonecodfish2365 nice! What was his name? Odds are they knew each other and worked on other projects together. I can ask him and let you know. His is Mark hamson
Bill & Ted was the first movie I saw without an adult. I had a friend who was a couple years older than me and just got his drivers license. So we went to the closest big city because the town I lived in had one theater and one movie a week. Great memories.
My sister and I would watch Bill and Ted and Drop Dead Fred until the VHS tapes died LOL the 90s were the best!!
UGH! COBWEBS!
So happy to see some love for drop dead Fred ☺️
We used to have a tape with those two on it. Recorded from Showtime if I remember correctly! Watched that tape a million times! Haha
@@olskoolvideoarchives bringing back some awesome memories.
Be kind, rewind!! 🤣
@@r.coffman1431 amen! Good times!
I LOVED Bill & Ted growing up. My best friend and I watched it (and Bogus Journey) so many times, along with The Idiot Box.
I remember my Mom renting the first movie, for our family to watch, and we really enjoyed it. I look forward to showing it to my kids, when they're old enough
The first time I saw Bill and Ted I had just dropped acid. I’ve never laughed harder in my life, it was a fantastic experience
similar experience but i was on shrooms the first time i saw bill and ted lol
Ok, good to know, Crackhead
Solid
The latest one though... ew
Now thats funny!
Bill & Ted is still in my top five all time favorite movies. My friends and I saw it in the theater four times because we loved it so much!
Thanks for the love, care and support.
It's a pleasure talking to you over here, where are you from??
I watched Bill and Ted again recently, for the first time as an adult. There was a lot of humor in the movie that as a kid I didn't pick up on. Like the dad giving Bill and Ted money so they can leave and he can bang their step-mom. I was 9 when the movie came out, so that sailed right over my head.
I was in sixth grade in Arizona when this movie came out, and we were talking about it in my class for a month or two before it hit the theaters. Everyone was so excited to go see it.
One of a small number of movies that my dad insisted on me watching. Thanks Dad.
I still remember My Mom and Sister showing me Bill and Ted when i was a kid. Still one of my favorite movies
They just dont even try to make movies like Bill and Ted anymore. Come On make a movie budget of only 10 million for everything and go.... Much less risk than Strange World thats for sure... Disney lost $180 million on that movie... give me 18 attempts at making another bill and ted instead please, and you will loose less money than that movie, even if they all flop.
The lockdowns actually forced movies to be made on a low budget for a while and they were the only ones getting released too at the time because the big money movies were holding off until the cinemas reopened so that the staff could try to get their bonuses. There are plenty of low budget movies, you just don't hear about them or realise it because just like back in the day they get released quietly. This time on streaming platforms instead of straight to TV or Straight to VHS/DVD.
Alex was super lucky, to be part of two very iconic movies. Huge part of my childhood right there.
I assume you mean B&T plus Freaked? Both are amazing.
@@badvermin Hell No. The Lost Boys, not Freaked. lol
@@ryanorlando1122 Freaked is more iconic
My wife worked at San Dimas High School for years! Loved the clip of the school at the end of part 2.
The thing about Bill and Ted was it was a really really great and fun story...not the future stuff so much because although that was fun, it was still a bit cheesey....but going back in various times, grabbing famous people, bringing them to to the future to see Malls. WATERLOO, Piggy Wiggy....Oink Oink Oink...and of course their epic History report, that was very creative storywise...the soundtrack was awesome too. I still listen from time to time.
I remember it came out after my first ever driver through San Dimas. I was shocked.
When Bill and Ted trailer hit I waited for it to hit VHS. The day it came out I got my parents to rent it and we all watched it together. It wasn't often my parents enjoyed the movies I watched but they liked this. It still holds up.
Oh, poor Alex! Only getting paid $65k for three months work in the mid 80s. Most of us don't make that much in a year in the 2020s.
It does seem like a lot of money for very little work, but most of these young actors only got this kind of job once every 3 or 4 years, so they had to stretch out their budget over a long period of time before they got another acting job. Sometimes that was it, and you never heard from them again.
STATION!! Those movies will be in my top 10 for the rest of my life.
I agree with Alex, there wasnt much difference between them. They were equals. I do remember seeing a behind the scenes clip for it about a year or two before it even came out wondering when it was gonna be released.
Yeah, basically they are only different because the delivery from each actor is different. Swap them and you'd still get the same two characters.
Some plot points would have changed like whose dad did what and such.
@@SergioLeRoux I think they kinda played with that in Bogus Journey when Missy left Bill's dad for Ted's.
I remember when this movie came out. Me and my friends made fun of it thinking it looked stupid and was going to suck. I watched it on Showtime one day and it was awesome! I'm glad we were wrong about it.
Whenever my nieces and nephews are making a mess eating ice cream I always say the Ziggy Piggy line. They have no idea what I am talking about.

The dude on the right is how I react to something out of place and Alex is how everyone else in the room with me reacts. 🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my fave movies of all time
The Lost Boys is my favorite movie

Bill and Ted was one of those movies I’ve seen so many times as a kid that I learned the lines.
I get it's on the lower end for leading role in a movie standards, but it's still bizarre to hear someone describe getting paid 65 grand for 3 months work in 1989 as 'didn't get paid shit' I cant be bothered to work out how much money that would be today but I think it's safe to say it's a least a few years wages to most people.
$156,058
I love Bill & Ted ! It's a classic
I wish I can meet Alex and tell him how much I love FREAKED, it’s one of the movies that inspired me to make movies in the first place. It’s such a bizarre, crazy, hilarious, amazing movie and I love it.
Brillant interview
So...why was Keanu Reeves upset about choices for Bill & Ted? Maybe I'm too dumb and missed it but it sounds like he wanted to play Bill but there wasn't a "why" so much.
Keanu Reeves is such a dude that 'upset' for him is 'a little miffed' for us mere mortals.
Yup. Me too.
I imagine simply because in the title Bill gets... *ahem*... first Billing.
@@PunkMonster Lol nice and probably true!

"No one is ever going to see this movie" 30+ years later my new kittens are William and Theodore.

Oiled up sax player. We... we all remember the... oiled up sax player.
😂 My friends and I always found that scene hilarious! He's just so intense!!
His name is Tim cappelo and the song is "I still believe".
One of my favorite movies of all time. Be excellent to each other!
Imagine how many films are just sat on the Hollywood shelves collecting dust.. Same with music
65000 is about 156000 now, that seems a decent actor wage to me.
Only if you have no clue what you're talking about
@@nihlify you're insane if that isn't enough for you and that's off of one movie you can appear in multiple a year
Yeah, I don't make that in 3 years, let alone 3 months...
You wouldnt think Alex winter is 56 57yrs old here. Dude looks great.
As soon as I saw they'd cast Bill and Ted's daughters I KNEW they'd pull a "Oh, it was really them all the time!"
The ending made the movie
This movie is my guaranteed mood booster
Still...best videos on the web.
NGL Bill & Ted sounds bad on paper, but what a gem that movie is! Bravo! It's so cool to hear Alex Winters discuss his POV.
Keanu did John Wick as a favor to the director who had been a stunt coordinator on Bill and Ted, as well as some of his other movies.
B&T was the original Ted talk and it was most excellent!😂
1:38 I still believe!
65k for that movie at that age? sounded great to me!
These guys are great, and this is not meant to disparage their personal character, but 65 thousand dollars for three months work is life changing to 95% of people.
It's just a reminder that Hollywood is on another planet compared to regular folks.
Wasn’t Alex in Killer Clowns From Outerspace too?
I’ve seen it 1000 times. Where is he in it? I’ve never heard he was!
Wooh!
As I remember it, it was sad that Bill and Ted was probably going to end up on cable at 4 A.M. Somehow it made it theaters.
The fact that Keanu Reeves did the second one shows a cool dude he is😊
There was 3 movies!
@@jamiesilvestro3382 you know what I meant the newest one he did

Bogus journey meant so much to me as a kid lol
got to see it with my parents brother and friends first movie i can remember other than et before that.Loved the movie.
Bill and Ted was okay I was 10 when the first movie came out I saw them both in the theater but I have to be honest I prefer The Lost Boys over Bill and Ted.
I forgot he was one of the lostboys damn I remember recognising him now man I'm getting old lol
WILD STALLIONS!
Por siempre mi más cordial saludo a este amigo gigante 💖 😘 ✌️ 😜
My ex told to watch Bill & Ted ........the only good thing she ever did 😁
I believe Bill and Ted was the catalyst for characters such as Beavis and Butthead. It was a time for that genre. People wanted to see two goofy immature characters do and say stupid and yet hilarious stuff.
Whoa that movie would have been so much different if they played opposite parts!
The first 2 have a place in my heart diamonds in the rough with some serious heart.
Tthat third movie i saw recently and while the casting and some of the character moments were great the dialogue and plot presentation was awful.
Plus we traded in "god gave rock n roll to you" for a thoroughly disrespectful bait n switch plus whatever the hell that generic backing music with a CGI lightshow was.
After the disappointment of that last movie I despise those two clowns.
Then the problem is entirely your own.
I want to hear about "Freaked".....
I love that movie so much, I used to watch it almost every day when they played it on HBO in the 90s. Just recently watched it and it's still as cool and unique as I remember. A true classic of its time!
@@tomlaw8821oh its still great, to this day when I see a Styrofoam cup I say "styrofoam cup....bad for the environment." So many people don't know about the film which is a shame...

Alex reminds me of Paul McCartney.

Be excellent to eachother, and party on dudes.
De Nomolos is Ed Solomon backward.
"69 dudes!"
Michael Rosenbaums portrayal of a young Lex was by far, the absolute most evil portrayal of that character on TV or film. Such a gradually worse character throughout the series, while giving him room to be good where necessary, that really nailed the character growth. It wasn't the writing. 100% him embracing the storyline.
His Lex wasn't evil until towards the end. It was when black kryptonite I think separated the evil part of Lex into it's own body and then rejoined. The evil was unleashed.
The reason Keanu wanted to be Bill is because it's the first name in the title.
I totally love bill and Ted I think they're hilarious I couldn't wait to watch number 3 I thought it was great and those two women actors who played the daughters were awesome they were just like their dads I wouldn't mind a reboot with the daughters as the main characters
@Keanu Charles Reeves a very long time I've seen a lot of what you've done but the first time I seen Bill and Ted I was a young teenager and I'm trying to track down the second one on DVD but I can't find it anywhere I would love another movie and I thought you were still awesome and funny I laughed myself silly at number 3 sorry I need to ask is this the real keanu also of the matrix movies
@Keanu Charles Reeves I am yes and I think johnny Depp is also brilliant I follow the both of you I really admire your acting talent I think you are a great actor and your family is beautiful I apologise I've never talked to someone who's so famous before I'm a bit freaking out actually😄
@Keanu Charles Reeves I feel like wow at the moment and you are such a nice bloke I have 5 children of my own I live in darwin Australia and before I lost my job I was a house cleaner crappy money but it was a job I want to thankyou for talking to me you have made my year
@Keanu Charles Reeves Thankyou for that and putting your trust in me I'm telling no one about this I never thought I would ever talk to one of my favourite movie actors but my regrets I have to go my children are home once again thankyou and God bless you
Bill and Ted 4 maybe?
Would love it so much
I thought the longest time Alex committed suicide after Freaks (maybe it was metaphorical).
The new Bill and Ted sucked I waited like how many years to see Bill and Ted save the universe and as soon as a seen there kids I knew it was going to be them 1/2-10
Cool
Who is this guy?
Ted was right.
Bill's mom was a babe!
wow,, who knows what other movies are sitting in some dusty old room that would be huge
Bill and Ted was so good
And yet that movie spoke to more kids in the 80.s than nearly any other . friends startted comparing themselves to bill and ted... oh I am a bill
Part 3 sucked. It's the worst movie I've ever seen. It was just as stupid as it could possibly be.
First 2 were great . 3rd movie was politically correct, box ticking dog shit.
As artist don't even know what is disrespect and unacceptable is pathetic
@Keanu Charles Reeves this whole year
@Keanu Charles Reeves have you watch my diary written for you, I didn't write recently because some bad people don't want me connect to you, and they really kill my dog, I am empty without you,but if you want to be bad villain, I would rather give up on you
