Brinicle, Underwater Icicle "Finger of Death"

  • New video has been released that shows the formation of a brinicle on the ocean floor. Essentially an underwater icicle, the brinicle, or "finger of death," freezes everything in its path.
The temperature of this sinking brine, which was well below 0C, caused the water to freeze in an icy sheath around it.
Where the so-called "brinicle" met the sea bed, a web of ice formed that froze everything it touched, including sea urchins and starfish.

C Proescher I was actually thinking I didn't know star fish could move that fast. I'd never seen them move at all. Not to mention why didn't they move in enough time if they were that fast but I guess that explains why they didn't have much of a chance to escape seeing how the ice forms.

The starfish are able to walk on the surface of the frozen seafloor after the icicle has left its impression-for a time- but if they don’t get off of it after maybe an hour or something it’ll freeze them. And they don’t really know which way to go because they likely can’t see the direction that the frozen path follows. As far as the ribbon killing by descending from above, that’s yes and no, it may be more lethal that way because it might be less detectable but would have to be directly under it.

What is happening: Brine with an extra measure of salt, ultrabrine, won't freeeze until the temperature gets well below freezing, and yet it is also denser than ocean water. Normally it would mix and dilute out, but when conditions are just right (temperature of the sea water just above its own freezing point, no turbulence) this ultrabrine freezes the sea water around it, essentially building its own pipeline as it descends to the floor; the pipe also prevents it from mixing. There it spreads out, acting like a refrigerant, freezing the sea water and eventually itself as it mixes and dilutes, and then gradually melts. Too late for the trapped creatures, who get greedily gobbled up by their mates, as shown in other parts of this Attenborough doco.

I'm guessing the salinity of the descending water keeps it from freezing. I'm sure the salinity increases add more water freezes, perpetuating the effect.

Some questions though, why the straight line? because of current or flow of streams underneath? Shouldn't the spread be theoretically in a circular pattern from the point of contact? or maybe the ground structure caused the spread of ice in a straight line like a highway...
