Animal Fun Fact: A fifth SMB3 Happy Meal toy (not counting the U3 Raccoon Mario) was planned to be released; the King Koopa Fireball Blaster. According to some concept art, the toy would have been a figure of King Koopa that could shoot a plastic fireball when a button was pressed. While the toy went unproduced, its concept was revisited with later Bowser Happy Meal toys in 2017 and 2023.

I remember having the spring pop Mario, had a lot of fun with that one. I honestly feel Super Mario Bros. 3 was the most iconic of the sequels back in the day in my opinion from the gameplay, the small merch that we were getting and showing up in the movie The Wizard

LOVED THESE!! The paratroopa was my jam! The suction spring Mario got stuck on the same beam as my Rice Krispies treat guy (same kinda toy)

Holy crap those are in amazing condition!! And, yes, they may have "1989" stamped on them when they were copyrighted, but they did release in the summer of 1990, proven by the included insert saying "1990" as well as promoting a 1990 issue of Nintendo Power.

man these were the best things i brought in show and tell 1st grade that fall. crazy thing is this game came out 88, 89 in America, but it’s popularity exploded after The Wizard. I remember seeing that movie and I just fell in love with Mario three. again, so crazy that by the time I owned a copy winner of 91 that game had been out already for almost 3 years. super Nas it just came out or was just coming out. get Mario three was so popular that’s why it’s still so iconic of a game even to this day still so crazy games were prolonged because you weren’t always getting a new consul every 4-5 Some games it may have taken years to get before the retro boom

There you go, August of 1990. Totally lines up to what I remember, since I got the game in May of 1990, and not long after that was the McDonald's promotion.

Loved this set and the Sonic 3 set as well! Happy meal toys today blow big time! Whenever my kids get one it usually gets tossed after a week.
My only gripe is that there were only 4 toys for these sets…
Also amazed that Nintendo or Sega never had a legit figure toy line back then. They would’ve sold like crazy.

I still have all 4 original toys from my childhood! Got them all when I was 5 in 1990. Never got the toddler toy tho sadly.

I had those McDonald’s toys. The only one I didn’t have was the Luigi.

I grew in the Washington, D.C./Maryland area, and I know seeing this Nintendo Super Mario Bros. 3 set from McDonald's. This was in August of 1990. My favorites in that set are Spring launched Raccoon Mario, Pull-back Luigi holding a starman on a cloud, a flipping Goomba & a hopping Koopa Troopa. I love Super Mario Bros. 3 Happy Meal toys. Now I live in S.C. and these toys are still relevant today.

I had three out of four (what a surprise); Goomba, Koopa Para-Troopa, and also Mario but not this Mario. My Mario was a regular variant, not the raccoon variant, and for the life of me, I have no idea where I got him from. Luigi seems to have more to him than you said because I'm pretty sure I saw a light flashing inside of him as he rolled, which makes sense because he's carrying a star man which, as most of us Super Mario aficionados since the 1980s should know by now, is the invincibility power up. I find it impressive that, not only do people collect these, but some have even been able to get the counter top display box for them as well. Now that's what you call dedication. I'm excited for the new movie too, in fact I'm going to try to see it on opening weekend like I did for Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which I enjoyed every second of. Hope I will be able to say the same for Mario this time around.
