Why Vancouver Canucks Fans Hate This All-time Great....

- Mark Douglas "Moose" Messier, a legendary forward known for his talent, toughness, and profound respect in the hockey world, graced the game for an astonishing 25 seasons. Revered as one of the greatest players in the sport's history, Messier's regular-season records are nothing short of amazing he ranks third in points (1,887), eighth in goals (694), third in assists (1,193), and second in games played (1,756). His playoff statistics are even more awe-inspiring, ranking second all-time in goals (109), assists (186), and points (295), and fourth in games played (236).
Messier's accolades are a testament to his dominance and skill on the ice. He captured the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player twice, once with the Oilers in 1990 and again with the Rangers in 1992. With six Stanley Cup victories to his name and a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1984, his legacy is cemented in hockey lore.
This is what most people already know about Mark Messier. However, today I want to talk about why Mark Messier is hated by a certain fanbase. Most people forget, but during Messier's three years with the Vancouver Canucks, he did the most to make himself hated forever within the organization. So why exactly was he so hated, and why does the organization and its fans wanna forget the messier era in vancouver, well lets start at the beginning

What's your opinion on Mark Messier!?👀
Couldn't he have worn *#27?* His WHA number

GORDIE HOWE: Ahem.
I’m an oiler so I love em. Also, fantastic channel, great profile picture, and a bright future ahead for ya bud! Keep up all the hard work!!
Legend. Best player the Canucks have ever had on their team. Ungrateful fanbase
The Canucks are the ones that signed him to a $20 million deal when he was 36 years old. If you're gonna hate on anyone, hate on the group that brought him in.
hated that they named the leadership award after this guy, good video
Should’ve been Jean Beliveau.
I was glad to see in Bob McCown’s book that one of his top arguments in hockey is that Messier’s leadership is overrated and essentially a myth.
@@September2004 messier was such a good leader that his teams missed the playoffs in his last 7 seasons. both teams, van and nyr, made the playoffs the season after he left. the latter routinely had the league's highest payroll while he was there.
messier is to leadership what mike babcock was to coaching. in both cases, their egos make donald trump look humble by comparison. yes, messier was a good player. but he was also an arrogant asshole, as a player and as a person. quite honestly, he still is. and his flavorless lay's chips suck.
he waltzes into vancouver, disrespects wayne maki's family, drives out every player the fans loved, gets his butt-buddy keenan hired, declines as a player, and leads the canucks to their worst run in franchise history. he whined like he was pierre-luc dubois. he can go fuck a cactus.
i was never an oilers fan, but at least i can respect guys like gretzky and kurri, and mcdavid and draisaitl. i cannot respect messier. he is an asshole of the highest order.
Bro great video! To this day as a Canucks fan I hate him. Only recently did Messier say it was a mistake to take the "C" from Linden. Him and Keenan sent us into very painful rebuild!
Not to mention, taking the retired #11 from the late *Wayne Maki.* Couldn't Mess have worn, say, #27? His WHA number
@@dnasty312 # 11 was never retired
@@Venture143 It was still a douchebag move.
@@Venture143it WAS UNOFFICIALLY RETIRED!!!! The family was told that by the Canucks organization, you should read your history on the Canucks.
The Canucks were probably heading towards a rebuild at the time anyway but I get the sentiment. They were already in decline after the '94 run to the Final and hadn't even made the playoffs in '97.
Good Video, but you could have spent more time discussing the ‘94 final to build up the rivalry between Messier and the Canucks. Besides kneeing Trevor Linden in the head he also had several slashes and elbows to Pavel Bure and other future teammates. That series was the background for everything else that followed…
messed up linden with a cheap hit.
took away our stanley cup (least offensive)
Got our players traded
brought in mike keanen (got linden and bure traded)
Messier's Canucks years were a real "Mess" to put it mildly. The insistence on being #11 after Canucks had retired it for Wayne Maki, shows that Messier's ego had grown so great he had lost all sense of reality about being a Canuck. Management was equally to blame for allowing this inexcusable lack of respect for hockey tradition. Once a number is retired from any NHL team, that's it. You wouldn't go to play for Detroit and demand Gordie Howe's #9, or Oilers #99, or any other NHL team. The Trevor Linden incident and other things about Messier's arrogance, huge ego, grossly inflated contract and poor performance as a Canuck, was nothing but a black hole in Canucks history. Messier really pissed off the fans and that's something no NHL player can ever get away with, on any team.
Shut up bitch. Fuck BC. You’ll never be Alberta or most importantly the Oil. You don’t deserve to respond to this comment either fuck face.
Wayne maki! Who the hell is that lol. Even one of the greatest players to ever lace them up couldn’t change your crap team and franchise into a winning one, a loosing tradition that continues to this day!
@@truenorth1355 Admittedly I had to google Wayne Maki myself. Thankfully finding historical info is quick and easy these days. Turns out his number was retired after dying of brain cancer aged 30. A pretty classy move by a, as you put it, "crap team and franchise". The lesson here, a quick google search is handy for keeping your foot out of your mouth. Or alternatively, watch the whole vid before commenting as this info was also included within. "loosing", by the way, is spelt with one "o", unless of course you're implying the canucks are really into archery.
I think after the whole not-being-able-to-sign Gretzky fiasco (Gretz didn't even return their call), the Canucks were desperate not to make the same mistakes with Messier... but the pendulum swing too far and they gave in to EVERYTHING Messier wanted. We all know how that ended up.
@@brenz36 thanks for the spelling lesson meathead! I couldn’t stand to watching it till the end, if you think this so called classy organization is so awesome then why would they let the Moose use 11 in the first place? Maybe they didn’t have such a speedy way to find out who the guy was just like 99.9 percent of all the dip shit cadicks fans out there surly don’t know who he is. Is my spelling ok this time teach?
Screw Messier. He cared zero about Vancouver. Was a great player but absolutely cashed out with the Canucks. Got his cups, then got his money and checked out. Headed the franchise in some of its worst years, all on his bed of money and lackluster play. Numerous incidents only contributed to the image he had this nasty, arrogant personality. Only person I recall actually said anything nice about him was Näslund.
Screw you youre butthurted he didnt win for your soery ass team
Worst Canuck ever (49 Year fan)
worst Canucks ever were the Sardine twins era, boo they sucked! ( Fan since Captain Kirk days )
Yes he really left bad memories with all Canucks fans that won't ever be forgotten.
least favorite athlete of all time. i'd even take tom brady and derek jeter over him, and they're two of the smuggest bastards in sports. messier is just plain a terrible person.

Attempted murderer Todd Bertuzzi also enters the chat
messier came in with an overall disdain for the canucks and a toxic attitude. a real dark period in which Linden was mistreated and Keenan shit all over the franchise. we Canucks fan dont look back kindly on this period and hate Messier for the disrespect he showed the whole club and fanbase
I've been a Canuck fan since they entered the NHL in the 1970s. As such, hated Messier when he played for Edmonton, yet, was a fan of his when he played for Vancouver. That the organization agreed to pay him that kind of money seemed foolish, still, not his "bad", blame the organization's decision-makers. Not losing Pat Quinn & bringing in Keenan were monumental blunders of that time, as well.
Amazing story telling man. This video needs so much more views. Editting top notch. Everything was great
This is a super well done video. Good stuff!
He ripped out the heart and soul of the team and stomped on it
Screw Messier
not even with justin trudeau's nanopenis.

He's a clown. Might be a great player but he's a guy who thinks he's better then the game. To many pucks to the head.
Youre a delusional hater. Messier one of the goats. You just pissed off he didnt take your sorry ass team to the finals. Canucks are overrated you guys never gonna win with midget quinn hugh a broke Demko

Thanks for the great video, as I knew he was hated by some people, but never knew why. Such a convenient video!
Overrated leadership, not a Vancouver fan
when i think of leadership, i think of guys like beliveau, yzerman, sakic. you know, people with humility and class.
Pinning your hopes and dreams onto a 36 year old center with that many miles on him... probably not a good idea.
Subject doesn't start until 20:00

Oh my god talk about filler
Messier should have stayed in New York. That's where he was loved after finally delivering a Cup for the Rangers in 1994. Wayne Gretzky also later said that he never would have signed with the Rangers in '96 if he knew that Messier was going to leave the following summer. The Blueshirts were coming off a run to the conference finals in 1997 and had a pretty good team. I wouldn't have enjoyed it as a Devils fan but it would have been a great story for the game of hockey if Messier and Gretzky combined for one last Cup win together on Broadway.
I honestly forgot about Mess playing briefly for the Canucks (think that uniform era helped the memory die)! Great video tho!
I left the Canucks for those three freakin years. Years before the trade and the hire I said the only thing that would make me leave Canuck land is if they ever got Messier or Keenan. No kidding. Guess what?! The Mark Messier leadership award? Ha! If I ever won that, I would refuse.
All time great player. NOT the all time greatest captain. His behavior in Vancouver plus the fact his teams failed to make the playoffs in each of his final 7 seasons both disqualify him for that honor. Greatest captain debate should involve Yzerman, Beliveau, and a few others. To Canucks fans: sorry you had to go through those 3 years.
Title of this video needs to be changed. This is a summary of his whole career.
Greatest canuck ever in terms of accolades and accomplishments.
Mark Messier was a great leader, whether Vancouver fans can appreciate that or not. I followed his career very closely, living in and near Edmonton my entire adult life. But Messier undeniably has a big ego and it's entirely plausible that his ego caused him, and the Vancouver Canucks, a lot of grief. While Wayne wore the "C" during most of his time in Edmonton; Gretzky, himself, claimed that Mark was the undisputed team leader in the Oilers' dressing room behind closed doors. The coach knew it, Gretzky knew it, and the team knew it. But the Oilers won five Stanley Cups by having one of the greatest teams of all-time. Messier did lead the Oilers to a fifth Stanley Cup without Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. A subtraction of two such high calibre players in any team in today's NHL; including today's Oilers - think Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard; would gut any current team and take them out of Cup contention. That is how good that 1987 Oilers team was. And Mark didn't get the Rangers Cup until coach Keenan and G.M. Smith got five other former Oilers on that Rangers' team, including the best linemate Messier ever had in Glen Anderson and the only other Oiler to have his name on the Stanley Cup six times, defenceman Kevin Lowe. That Rangers Cup winning team was heavily influenced by the 1980s Oilers dynasty as evidenced by six former Oilers playing on that team and Mike Keenan having lost in the Stanley Cup finals while coaching his Philadelphia Flyers against those great Oilers teams. The Vancouver team that Messier joined was not the equal of the 94 Rangers, never minding the Oilers dynasty teams, particularly when Gretzky and Coffey were there. One player is still one player and it may be that Pat Quinn just didn't know how to deal with someone like Messier. Trevor Linden was a great player in this own right, probably my favourite Canuck player, but Linden was laid back, Messier is anything but, and very fiery. But I still think Messier was more of a leader than even Gretzky. Wayne was clearly better than Messier offensively but Mark was the better two-way centre by far. I still think Wayne Gretzky is the best player to have laced up the skates but Mark Messier is the greatest leader the NHL has ever seen. All this being said, I don't blame the Canucks' fans for not liking Messier as it appears he did treat them very poorly indeed and he likely let his ego get in the way of any sort of possibility of a productive relationship with the Canucks' team and fan base.
One of my favourite players. Didn`t know his father played in the UK. So does that make him the most famous name in UK hockey. I`d say no...... Wayne Gretzkys brother Keith, also played here 👍😁
Bro, you titled the video one thing, and 95% of it wasn't even based on that. This is clickbait
I loved the Moose, he was a great play maker, beastly tough. I only liked him when he played for other teams and not the Canucks. I was excited when Mark was coming to Vancouver, but he became a let down.
Sounds like a garbage organization to me and lots of blame being pinned on the player over the people making the actual decisions.
Not to say Messier is blameless in all of this but the Canucks didn't have to give him all of those concessions as well as dismantle the team around him. It was never going to work out well in that environment. Moose earned his money and he was right to cash in, especially so when he went to a place that he probably never wanted to be in the first place.
I'll take Yzerman, Gainey and Sakic over mess....followed hockey since 1978. Great vid
oh ya i remember that devastating era. It was pretty messy, eh?
Yep couldn't have been any Messier. lol
I cringe every time he is a guest at HNIC.
Why?
When the heck do you get to the part about a fan base hating him?
Over-rated as a leader. You mentioned his stats "werent bad" for a guy his age in Vancouver...but they were the WORST STATS of his NHL after his rookie season....AND he scored more points in his first year back with the Rangers than in any of his three years in Vancouver. Came to Van for the paycheck and then returned to the Rangers for a 4 year retirement party.
One thing the biggest thing...is that he destroyed the core. Destroyed the core. Its like if someone came in and dismantled a team because he didnt like them. He had an ego. Refused to be a team player.
He would travel separately from the team... the players hated Mr. Potatohead too
I actually liked the guy when he played for Edmonton, or at least I thought I did, but as a Canucks fan I lost all respect for him for what he did in Vancouver. What a colossal jerk.
Mark Messier's legacy is truly divided like a two-sided mirror! Arguably no NHL player have made himself so divided among fans.
One side reflects his merits and leader qualities that goes beyond many of the best captains ever in NHL, and even the NHL introduced the "Mark Messier Award" for best shown leadership on & off the ice. Having Captained 2 teams to Stanley Cup championships in both Conferences (first ever) and became like an iron-man to play year-after-year to age 44! Having been regarded early on at best a mediocre PRO tallent, who fought on to one day establish himself not only as a better, then a mediocre player, but a top level player and even elite level!
BUT...
The other side reflects an uggly portray if Mark Messier. The one of a dirty player who was as individual tallent overrated = was only good when he was with those strong teams he won with. How greedy and money grabbing Messier gradually became, demanding insane salery + bonuses + benefits + salery insurences at advanced age of 38 AND to wear retired number 11# - And somehow, for no sane reason a team (Vancouver Canucks) AGREED and SIGNED ON the demands (?).
That he soon also aquired the "C" captain role from a fan-loved icon (Trevor Linden) and then throwing salt to the wounds that same player gets disrespected, humiliated and oppressed to finallyu getting sent-off in a trade to the non Cup contender NY Islanders.
How despite the insane amounts of tallents on the team, and Messier manages not only to not score impressive numbers on the ice, but also act silent and uninterested in leading his team, a team in great need of a stabile and inspiring leadership.
Then is also the part of a rather seen "mutiny" in the franchise by Messier and new GM Mike Keenan. By getting the team gutted from its tallents to bring in players not needed (especally the goalie changes) and the team plunges into 4 years of darkness. And when Messier leaves the team in 2000, he decade afterwards demand $millions despite never lived up to anything of promises and expenses all he was given - and gets those money in court.
So if you are a Oiler or Rangers fan, you love him - If you are a Canuck fan, you despise him!
If you are neutral, you have a tough balance of the edge that is constantly wobbling as you look on all perspectives and goes back- and forth..
If I was born one day later I would share the same birth day as Mark Messier
Horrible signing. First off he played for the hated Oilers, who completely dominated the Canucks. Secondly, he won the Stanley Cup against the Canucks and got Trevor Linden, Captain Canuck traded, got Pat Quinn fired and help bring in Mike Keenan era. I’m still shaking my head over his free agent signing.
rumour has it the reason why Messier was not chosen fot he Nagano Olympics in 98 is he would never have passed the doping tests (in a tournament wehere Theo Fleury played)
Greatest coattail rider in history.
It was actually 1989 when the Flames beat the Oliers. Montreal won the Cup in 1986.
um no, the Steve smith incident happened in 1986, a quick google search can show you that
Singlehandedly cost the team Linden, Bure and Mogilny
Worst part of Vancouver Canucks history. I still think it is idiotic that we have the logo from that Orca Bay Sports era. It's a terrible logo and represents an ownership group that had no relationship to it's fanbase otherwise they would never have hired Keenan and signed Messier. We lost to them ina cup final just years before. Brutal.
The last few minutes is just salty drivel.
Vancouver was so lucky to get a real Captain.
How many other former Canucks have coaches two different teams to a Stanley Cup?
man this is more about how fans blamed the player for the orgs incompetence. its kina funny. these days almost all of these moves would definitely be avoided. like if 80s oilers weren't allergic to success they wouldnt have scattered their dynasty to the four winds. and Vancouver still found a way to fumble handeling those 2 in a worse way. fans are unfair and all that but we accept that cause we love our teams. we just should remember the orgs did alot of the work making these disaster stories.
Mess is a legend, and horribly overrated.
Mike's boy... History will show ... clown 1 and clown 2.

typical Canucks fans. They just can't get over it or let it go
yea, they (canucks fans) hate him 'cuz:
-he beat them in '94 stanley cup final (previous to him joining their team
-he stole unofficial retired #11 (reserved to honor a previous player who died tragically)
-he stole the captaincy from popular captain Trevor Linden (who then left the team
-he sucked for 3 season (coasted around the ice doing next to nothing, barely put up any points - certainly not enough to justify his high paid salary
-after his 3-year contract he sluffed off back to the rangers #goodridancemessier
Ok , this the first view of your content and I have some mild criticism.
1) FIrst, I get that you are a kid & just don't know. However,
Messier did not "guarantee" a win.
Likewise your hyperbole about such was way over the top.
It helps to read the actual article before comparing Mess to Babe Ruth 😂
Messier gave an interview where he was hyping his team in a must win road game. He listed the positive artibutes of his teammates & finished his thought by stating "That is why we will win".
So the NY Post runs the salacious back page headline as "We will win".
The post turned in a offhanded comment about his teammates into some sort of "guarantee"
Joe Namath was a guarantee.
2) MOST IMPORTANT 🌟
I really enjoyed the content. Very well done EXCEPT you simply must educate yourself on the term "VOCAL FRY".
