    The aftermarked magazine well (including the triggerguard) is made from aluminium, not from steel. The name of the producer is Michael Miedler, a young gunsmith from Austria.

    Quality well spoken video on a very fine early series steyr . Thank you for your time and service young man . Well done . I wouldn't trade mine or my 08 series for ANY other rifles as far as better out of the box rifles go ., I'm no military sniper , but I've been shooting mine since 1983 , no problems ever . Hard set accurate with the la rue mounted kahles 12 X 56 I shoot on both of my steyrs .

    I've had 4 of the SSG69s over the years and I have a soft spot for them. I do find them to be excessively fragile though. In my wimpy owndership I had more than one plastic failure. Mags/trigger guards/stock.........Cold they shoot extremely well. when warm they tend to walk a bit on zero. Steyr could have had an updated 69 if they had gone to the modern steyr magazines like the laFrance conversions....

    Here from Bloke on the Range shoutout. Nice video, may end up staying
    Oh, btw this may seem pedantic but that wouldnt be called a box magazine. Box magazines are the more traditional magazines like a Lee Enfeild or say a M16 magazine

    • @copuis
      @copuis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      so the "box" part in box magazine refers to the shape, being that of a squared off or rectangle, the first of these being of the internal type (hence why you can have a 5 round magazine, that is not detachable)
      you had tube feed magazines as well
      now IF you refer to a magazine of these natures, you might get someone typing on a keyboard with much fury, no doubt using a profile picture of a learned person they are a fan of, because as that person understands it, a magazine should be removalable, or someone else, with a forever classy "69" in their name trying to sounded learned and correct something, while either getting to technical for their own knowledge, or comically being wrong (or american (the land of "clips") or both!)
      you would then no doubt have someone else, make some nit picking remark, as they might understand a box magazine as being something simple, with a feed lip or two, and a spring, either double stack or single
      however in this case it is a rotary stack, box magazine, (not strictly a pure rotary, I mean, we are after all being pedantic here)
      so what you have here, is some terms that have a fixed meaning, however some people have slightly differing understandings based on their exposure to things,
      if only the guy in this video didn't go into some depth about how it worked at the 3 minute mark, and just assumed people would have a base understanding of the terms, and not get hung up on something that was minor, but required a depth of knowledge and used the correct term for this rifle

    Can I ask you a favor? What is your SSG 69 throat lenght? Or putting it in another way, what is your OAL on cartridges just touching the lands?

    • @dsar9489
      @dsar9489  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest, I have neither the time, equipment, or inclination to worry about such 1%ers as throat length. I seat my 308 hand loads to 2.798" OAL by default. If it chambers I run it. Changes in projectile type may dictate winding that in by 0.02 - 0.04" but as long as it chambers without resistance, and has a consistent OAL batch to batch. That's all I care about.I have enough variation in what I do behind the trigger that getting sexed up about throat length vs projectile ogive in order to chase the last 0.1 MOA out of a specific rifle and load set up is really beyond my level of talent at this time. - Rowan

    A friend of mine had one of the P1 models. Lovely rifle but it was prone to cracking of the trigger guard and magazine housing which is a plastic moulding. I was never convinced that the plastic magazines were very robust either. Interestingly, others must have found the same because somebody has made a steel replacement. Might be worth considering.

    Good Day Mate! Well, there's one of these things on gun broker.. I usually crap out after about 1000 bucks... but I've seen some cool videos of it lately, and I do need an accurate 308 soon... So, I'm currently the high bidder at $1525.00... but you say the barrel is "pressed in" to the action? Hmm... I don't know if I'm going to bid any more... I think I'll let this one go. So not even a pin, it's just pressed in?

  • @v4pilot331
    @v4pilot331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know as much as anyone about these guns... I've owned an original PII imported by GSI for last 20 years and have shot mine at 1000 yards with amazing results considering my skills. Personally, I would not call them mil-spec due to the extensive use of pre-polymer brittle plastics used in the entire receiver as well as the rotary magazines. Not only are the plastics fragile, but they also can't handle copper cleaning solvents, they will disintegrate (don't ask me how I know). My solution: to replace the entire receiver with a custom aluminum milled receiver that was commercially available from a machinist in Florida. Now it also uses bulletproof AWI magazines instead of the fragile plastic rotary's.

    • @v4pilot331
      @v4pilot331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the accessory rail is made of pot aluminum and is no where near strong enough to handle the recoil of a Harris style or equivalent bipod (I've broken 2 factory replacements from Steyr)... and finally replaced mine with a custom steel replica machined by Mohave Southern.

    • @v4pilot331
      @v4pilot331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the factory dovetail 30mm scope rings have small metric slot head screws that make it difficult to cinch down your scope properly. I wish they were hex head or better yet TorX.

    Pistol you won't mention? What do you have against the Steyr M?
    (just because I'm an occasionally obtuse guy: Yes, tongue firmly in cheek)
    As to the rear locking, also: Shorter length of bolt throw for a given cartridge. Don't have to clear the length of the locking spaces between the magazine and the chamber. Which I appreciate about the Enfield (Lee-Metford, Lee-Enfield, et al.) family.

    • @dsar9489
      @dsar9489  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odd, I don't recall us ever using a pencil for pointing our features. The DSAR pokey/pointy implement is indeed a bayonet, therefore it is not "waved around" as much as it is used to decisively indicate the subject being discussed.
      Perhaps if you are pedantic enough to point out insignificant things such and the use of "helical" in the place of "rotary" then maybe sharp objects aren't for you.

      DSAR 6 locking lugs for strength and a crappy plastic magazine. I do wonder if it helps the accuracy over the typical 22 that locks off the bolt handle. I can’t find much information other than they were made to look like a center fire rifle Remington had at the time. I’d love to know why they’re so overbuilt.

    1st purpose built sniper rifle was the Soviet SVD

    • @dsar9489
      @dsar9489  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just checking your definition of Sniper and DMR.
      The design philosophy behind the SVD is very, very diffrent to that of the SSG.
      The SVD was designed to fight with the squad and subsequently retains features for this purpose at the expense of accuracy. Including suppression by volume.
      The SSG is a true out and accuracy machine. Designed for precision fire on point targets.
      At the time both were designed the term "Sniper rifle" was used on any millitsry rifle with a scope, and the term DMR did not exist. Modern definitions now delineates the 2 which as i stated, makes the SSG the first purpose built sniper rifle. Not a DMR or scoped infantry rifle.

    • @floydvaughn836

      @@dsar9489 The real difference lies in the experience and proficiency of a shooter with a particular weapon. Elmer Keith practiced long range position shooting out to incredible ranges with handguns. Take 1 man, 1 SVD, and some decent range time, and you get a sniper. By 1 SVD, I mean that rifle stays with that shooter.

Great super tight grouping at 1-400 yards with 168 grain Sierra bullet.but 155 grain Lake City at longer distances (Palma match)it was not ideal. An the Springfield Armory M1A super match or glass bedded match with KREIGER OR DOUGLAS barrel were better suited for across the course and Palma match competition...
