This is just great, it's like letting your imagination run wild. Could watch stuff like this all day.
CrimsonAnihilator Thanks!

I absolutely agree.

I second that
Totally
I mostly do digital drawings now and have't drawn with pencil in years but I still enjoy watching your work.
Markcrilley is my favorite youtuber ever :) He cares a lot about his fans and he really wants us to learn how to draw really good. Thank you :D
Level3squirtle Thanks! ^_^
markcrilley it's true!
Yes! He is the only guy who cares about his viewers and he's an amazing artist too
ikr!!! I love drawing, and I love videogames!!! and he makes it possible to do both!!
Mark, these are the things that made this video so likeable:
1. The random comments are extremely entertaining
2. There was a good balance of realtime/time lapse- you chose good pieces to time lapse vs do in real time.
3. You explained things a little slower- I've noticed sometimes you talk a little fast and it's almost like you're hyper.
4. You actually mentioned that you were LOOKING at references (like the saddles and the dinosaurs jaw). I've found that at my school, so many artists don't realize that you can and should do research first.
5. I love when you do 2 part episodes- it gives me a chance to really absorb all the information in the first part before continuing.
Thank you so much for creating such amazing videos
Melanie Vick Thanks Melanie! ^^
The blanket under the saddle is called a saddle blanket but you can also have saddle pads
Edit 16:35 the strap that holds the saddle on or the girth should be in front of the arms... the saddle for a horse rests on the withers (shoulders) and the girth is right behind the horse’s front legs
I love how Mark Crilley goes though all the possible genres of drawing.
Sara Kubo Thank you Sara :)
Love the effortless feel and quality of your vids, Mark was one of my inspirations to start youtube. Thanks Mark
I'm glad your games they are so cool
Tell stampy that to make A new game
Hey fin ball😃
FINBALL OMG WHY
SOMEONE OF STAMPYS FRIENDS (XBOX) ALWAYS RUINS THE CHANNELS I LIKE (sorry but i like stampy but he can get annoying and finball, i never knew you liked Mark Crilley) SORRY
You're probably the most caring and genuinely funny youtuber Mark, keep it up
Ólafur Cesarsson Wow thank you! You're very kind.
I cannot unsee the cinnamon roll.. now I'm hungry.
Laura Nano-Vargas ^_^
I was hungry when I got here z😔
Luckily, I ate before watching this video...
Good thing I have a pizza baking :3
I seem to learn more from your videos than I do in actual art classes in school. Your teaching is awesome and I love the different lessons you give! I improved a lot from your videos. Thank you for helping all of us!
Thank you for helping us improve our drawings and caring for us
LOL At first I thought it said 'How to make a FANCY illustration.'
It's called a 'saddle blanket' Mark :) It does prevent the saddle from chaffing the horse and helps keep it from slipping since horses work up quite a sweat under the saddle. Usually there's a big wet spot when you remove the saddle XD
I can't wait for the coloring! You have made my drawing skills so much better! Thank you!
You were the only youtuber that reach "million subs" who's replied to our questions, suggestions, praises man you are awesome
14:02... Its a horse blanket. It prevents the saddle from chaffing the horse...
Useless for a T-Rex, because it has scales... Might help prevent uneven wear on the scales, though...
This dinosar has scales but a rel Tyrannosaurus would have feathers similair to those on a ostrich
Jonas Junior Paleontologist yeah, but this one mutated to have scales... :P
Hey Mark... Okay first off I found you off of my friend who had bought Mastering Manga 1 (along with the 2nd book too) and I am obsessed. Ever since i saw your books, I've started to come home and straight to watching more of your videos i missed. I also started to draw way more with my own style and it couldn't of started without finding your book then youtube.
I always look forward of going to school, and teaching my friends who haven't watch your videos. Then always love coming home.
I'm really excited for high school art next year.
Thanks Mark!
anyone else wonder how he draws this stuff like its nothing!? especially while talks... it would take all my concentration to draw this.... props to man. hope you don't stop anytime soon!!!!!
Aaron Bashkir Thanks! :)
every video i watch lol its like :" how did your brain know what to tell your fingers to tell the pencil to make that line right there?!" lol
I think you should do more videos like that just taking your time and us seeing what thought that goes into it. Can't wait for the next video
Hey Mark. Do you think for your next video, after this series, you could touch upon drawing motion like in action scenes or ways to make your characters less stiff? Please and thanks!
The blanket-like thing under the saddle is called a numnah in Ireland and the UK but I think they mainly just call it a saddle pad in America! It's used to keep the underside of the saddle clean and to help cushion the horses back, also the ''saddle strap'' is called a girth! Great video! :)
I love this kind of drawing videos! Please make more of this; very enjoyable and very educational!!
From a riding perspective, since I don't know if anyone has answered that question for you: The part beneath a saddle is a blanket or pad that is placed beneath the actual saddle for the comfort of the horse. Saddle's themselves are generally made of a wooden frame beneath leather, therefore you would have a lot of uncomfortable pressure against an animals skin and back. The pad or blanket helps to absorb some of the weight and pressure from both the saddle and your body weight pressing down on it. The strap that goes under the stomach and chest of a horse usually is connected to buckles that are placed beneath a flap of leather beneath the saddle as well.
I'd like to say that I liked your "idea" behind some sort of metal plate that connects to the jaw, but with a horse, the part that connects to the reign is called a "bit" and is usually placed in the horses mouth where they have a gap between their teeth. A missing tooth, if you will, and goes through the mouth and over the top of the tongue. I think if you'd removed one of the teeth above the space and showed some sort of cross bar in his mouth as well as a chain or strap going under the jaw would have given a more sense of control of the dinosaurs head.
But of course, this if fantasy, so you can do whatever you like! This is just talking in a "realistic" term.
Mark, The blanket beneath the saddle is to prevent the saddle form rubbing and causing skin problems for the beast. Also the belly strap needs to be a bit loose so the animal can move its diaphragm and breath. Hopefully the dinosaur is more bird-like than reptile or he will freeze. Love the drawing
Watching these videos have helped me develop my drawing skills a lot!.. Thanks mark
The "reverse knee" is actually a section of the foot. It's kind of like birds, the stand on their tip-toes as well as predatory dinosaurs. I've been drawing dinosaurs since I first picked up the pencil Mark. It means a lot to see one of my favorite artists draw one too. Great work.
Markcrilley I Am a high school senior aspiring to get into video games or comics one day and at school the graphic arts class and drawing classes got together and brought in Sanford Greene as a guest speaker we got to ask questions and he basically told us his journey to becoming a comic book illustrator and I was suggesting maybe you could do a video on the first steps you took or the first steps anyone could take to aim for that job field (i.e.) College/ High school courses to take, getting your art and name out there, starting with smaller businesses and working your way up to like Sega, Disney or marvel/DC or anything you find to be valuable information. Thank you
I really like your goofy side XD
ON WARDS WITH MY CINNAMON ROLL!
got this on as I study and write notes. You have a soothing voice which is conducive to learning. Also flicking back to see how the picture is coming on is a nice break every now and then :)
omg, those mountains in the back. love them. if it's a fantasy illustration, i'd really like you to make them ice-looking (blue, like they are made out of ice)
I loved this one I notice we share the same style of imagination i just need to keep practicing to up my skill so i can put it on paper the way i want it to look thank you so much your a true inspiration Mark
The saddle blanket prevents the saddle rubbing away the horses fur and making the skin raw. ahh dinotopia so many childhood memories
Its a saddle blanket. it was introduced by the natives americans and is used primarily in western saddle riding. And its meant exactly for what you said to prevent chaffing as well as protect the leather from the horse sweat if the horse is being rode for long periods of time.
You're always so into creative little details like designs, emotions, and cultures. I think it would be really awesome if you put all these together into something like a mask or made up artifact! :)
i think you explaining the idea behind the drawing makes the video way more entertaining and interesting! i hope you'll keep that up in future videos.
If we're going to get into technicalities of "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back", then it is the second film because it was produced and displayed second among all of the Star Wars films. However, it is also "Episode" Five. Going from "Episode One: The Phantom Menace", the Empire Strikes back film is 5th chronologically, following the story.
That looks awesome Sauce! You're a great artist and I'm glad you use your talent to teach others. Keep doing what you're doing!
The mat underneath the saddle is indeed intended so the saddle doesn't chafe the skin of the animal. On a side note, Ia classmate of mine back in elementary school had a dinotopia book and I had tried, but failed to remember its name, so thanks for that as well hahah. Keep up the good work!
Mark, your illustrations are great. Do you plan them in advance? By which I mean, do you have something off camera for reference while you draw? Or do you make your illustrations 'on the fly'?
I'm pretty sure the ''reverse knees'' are actually the heels and they walk on their toes. any way I've got one question: Did you ever think of making the dinosaur duel? •W•
drool
yas
Mark! You are a breath of fresh air.
You were actually pretty close with the saddle pad purpose. It's basically used as a shock absorber to protect the horse's (or Dino's) back muscles. It also keeps the underside of the saddle clean and keeps it from sliding around.
Great video btw~! Dinotopia is an old favorite ^_^
Those backwards knees are actually the heel of the foot, they walk (like cats and dogs do) on their tippy toes. The blanket under the saddle is a saddle blanket, lol. I quite like this longer process, lets us get a feel for the tweaks and changes and time for more of your great remarks.
I think more of these videos that focus on the conceptual stuff is a good idea :D loving this illustration so far, Mark!
oo. .Water color.. i love your water coloring!
Looking forward to next week. :D
I loved dinotopia can't wait to see the fully colored piece!
The saddle there is an western saddle. The thing on the front they use to wrap the reins around it :)
I just finished reading the Miki Falls series and I loved it! Money well spent! You're amazing, Mark! Keep up the great work!
Noah Brandl Thanks Noah!! :)
You're welcome! And thank you for your videos! I really enjoy them!
I love how you are inspired by other artists c: I really look up to you sir c:
Thanks mark for making the video . I am stuck on point perspective.
Hey Mark, how would you feel drawing a Jojo's bizarre adventure character? Like, maybe Joseph Joestar or something? Hirohiko Araki is one of my favorite artists, and I'd like to see you attempt his drawing style.
Hey Mark, do you have tips how I can make my characters look more "natural"? If I draw them, they look so stiff and yours make this "smooth" appearance and look like they would interact with the environment or situation.
It's called a caparison or Saddle pad. You use it so the horse don't get any nasty burns or wounds from the saddle.
I loved that you used a westernsaddle :D He could have a lasso :D And it's the best saddle for long rides, it's like sitting in a chair
DINOTOPIA for the win! Also maybe since it's cold, you should give the Dinosaur some FEATHERS! It would at least half make sense.
Miki falls is in my school library :) I am reading it now!
The blanket under the saddle is called a saddle pad, and it's put there too keep the saddle from rubbing the horses skin, since they get all sweaty during a ride. They're also great beds for pesky cats that hang around the barn ;P
This helped me a lot. I wish I had such a creative mind!!! Can't wait for the next video.
The saddle blanket goes under the saddle.
Sometimes there is a decorative blanket on top of the saddle blanket too.
Awesome illustration! I love watching you work. It helps inspire me to better my skills at drawing, sadly I still have a long way to go! I have purchased both your Mastering Manga books and use them daily as I practice. Can't wait to see you finish this one up! Take care!
James McGaffey Thanks James!!
I love this video! It's helping me make my own creatures/monsters. I'm unable to wait until the next video!
Mark, I think you should do a new type of Q&A. Like asking everyone for some of their quick questions based on technique, that way you can demonstrate different techniques pretty quickly and answer some of the smaller questions rather than finding a subject to do a full video completely on.
Ahh! I've got that book, Amazing illustrations!
i never get tired of this vidéos, it's always so interresting.
Your pics are so, so amazing!!! ❤️
Mark sometimes i wonder how you manage to come up with all these fresh new videos every week. it puzzles me
Damn I haven't watched any of this bloke's videos in a long ass time. Surprised and happy for him to see has well over 1 million subscribers. I don't even remember how many he had when I watched but it wasn't even close to this! Well done Mark.
Nice job as always Mark. But I have got a little suggestions for you: Could you draw the tail a bit bigger? Otherwise the dino will fall over... You could curve it up a bit.
I have been watching your tutorials nonstop between school and work! I bought both of your mastering manga books and think it would be awesome if you made a tutorial showing how to draw manga styles like Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto and other Shonen types (but especially the Naruto style haha). Thanks again for all the inspiration and techniques you pass on to me and others like myself!
MY GIANT CINNAMON ROLL! I NEVER GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT MY GIANT CINNAMON ROLL!!!
DJ Funk ^_^
I own and love dinotopia and I love the drawing! Nice job
Mr crilley I do get inspired watching you draw,it makes me want to become that much more of a better drawer. But I have one problem that's been bothering me that I cant seem to do. how exactly would you draw someone walking from the distance kind of leaning a bit, kind or raged you could say. If you do see this do you mind making a short video of the process? I'm pretty sure there are more people out there wanting to ask but don't know how to.
I love your humor, Mark!!
Next time you get an idea for a two part series, or any number of parts for that matter, I feel I would benefit a lot from the last part being entirely about refining the final piece. For example, this video would have been pencils & coloring and part 2 would have been refinement. Just an idea. As always, I really enjoy watching you create works of art. You're awesome! ^^
Adore the work, my daughter and grand daughter even more so; any chance of doing a rendition of a manga style pop group: as it would make her day. Many thanks for all the excellent work over the years
Chris Supronas Thanks Chris!
Thank you for the awesome videos! Do you have/could you make a video on drawing prospective for a female anime?
Mark, your vids are great and your drawings are great. I'm wondering, have you ever been in the habit of "drawing through" the figures, or has starting with outlines always worked well enough for you?
Markcrilley is there anything that u cant draw? Like what short of drawings hold u up and make u scratch ur head and say "can i draw this?" Lol u got skillz man been watching for about two years now and im still impressed with ur art.
Empire Strikes Back is technically the second movie, because the trilogy with Luke Skywalker came first. But because they made the prequels, Empire Strikes Back is mostly referred to as the fifth movie in the series
As for the fur coats they did have fur coats and warm clothing on Hoth.
I really loved this drawing and the Star Wars references made my day!
Hello, Mr. Markcrilley I just was dying to say that I absolutely positively love your you tube videos. For one reason because it does not use any vulgar language, and is not inappropriate. I also love them because I have actually, truly improved far beyond I ever thought I would/could. Now, I have a sort of passion, if you will, for Superheroes, mainly Batman, and Robin/Boy Wonder (whatever you would like to call him), and the Young Justice episodes and the Justice League. anyways, I am looking to write a fan-fiction of them, and I really wanted to illustrate it, but the only problem that stands in my way (besides the need of paper 😉 ) is that, I haven't any idea on how to draw them. I don't do very well with just looking at pictures, I will for inspiration, but to actually draw it while looking at the picture, it never works out, so I was wondering that, if you ever have the time when you are not busy, if you would be as kind to show me how to draw them in a (short or long) variety of poses like Batman throwing a batarang (I still haven't quite figured out what it is actually called), or Robin punching the Joker and Miss Martian/ M'gann levitating another criminal and whatnot. I really would like to be able to do this so that I can really be proud of it, and to give the reader a picture of what is happening, so that it would be able to make more sense. Would you please help me with this? It doesn't need to be super detailed, but detailed enough that I could carry on from there and be able to do it and different poses myself. Thank you for taking the time to at least read this, and AWESOME JOB!
Wish you the best

I think James Gurney is great, too! Love his fantastical worlds. He's an amazing watercolourist, too, of our regular world, too!
The blanket thing that goes under the saddle is called a "Numnah" and the saddle strap that goes around the belly is called a "Girth" or "Girth strap". Great video!
I subscribed a few days back and wow this is really amazing, thank you so much for giving tutorials and advice! I can draw but watching you're videos makes my drawings look like scribbles haha, you have inspired me to keep going. And i really like that you reply to your viewers, please make a lot more videos for more to see. :D
***** Thanks!! ^^
markcrilley your a very talented artist i inspire to be like you + i watch you every day and im getting awesome at drawing thank you markcrilley ps awesome name you are so funny to
And i draw the pikachu you drew even your name with it that said markcrilley and every thing thatyou drew on the paper it turned out awesome
Gurpreet Chaggar it kinda smels me like bullshit but bravo
Yay I'm not the only one who thinks drawing like that is crazy😝 Lol thanks Markcrilley to show the awesome straight from the master! 😏😏😏
The blanket underneath the saddle is to stop the hard leather from rubbing, bruising and damaging the horses back.
Santa riding a dinosaur with a giant cinnamon roll... Topped with tassels to make them fell pretty! I love how our minds get weird when we're drawing 😊🎨
Beautiful. This is just fantastic!
Hey Mark!
I would first like to say thank you, thank you so much for every thing, you help me progress each time and i really feel like i could achieve my goal of being a manga artist!
Listen i have been drawing ever since i'm 9 and ive made a lot of progress, right now i reach an average level but listening to your advice i feel like i'm progressing each time!
I know one day i'll achieve my dreams, drawing my whole life would be awesome, i'm so happy with every video you make, i progress and progress and before i know it, it changed from the drawings of the day before!
Thank you so much anyways, you are a very important role in my progress!
Bye :3
I love this kind of videos ! Not necesseraly to draw along, I just love observing and learning. And you're so funny \o/
Thank you so much for teaching us all your knowledge !
Hey Mark, I was just wondering if you could do a 'how to' ombre hair?
I follow your drawings alot and im actually starting to get pretty good so I wanted to say thank you
I believe (and I could be mistaken since its been years since I was at my uncle's farm where he stables and cares for horses) that usually, the layer between the saddle and the horse is called a horse blanket. Its generally used to keep the saddle, which is made from leather stretched over a hard substance like wood, from chafing the animal's skin and creating sores. In this case, maybe we could call it the "dinosaur blanket"?
I really enjoy your humor!
Love videos like this please do more like this one
The rear appendages? IRL, chronologically, it is the second one filmed after Star Wars came out in theaters in the late 70s. They have found out that the T-Rex might have had feathers as did many other types of dino including many forms of raptor.
Such a wonderful imagination 📝
Keep it up Mark😃
Mark, do you plan to do a video about weapons?
*Santa Claus* in *Jurassic Period*.
***** ^_^
Reminds me of an Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode.
LONG AGO...
you have a nice profile picture ^.^
Can you do a video on how to make a character sheet? My class is accelerated so they just skimmed through how it looks finalized on a computer not on paper. Like the 3 ortho views and the full colored render.
I loved your video on how to draw Link and Sorra, but i was wondering if you can draw Midna ( The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess)
