Tootie Heath, passed away April 2024 from luekemia shortly before his 89th bday. A very talented musician. I play electric drums & while there are pro's & con's, I can't replicate his stick strikes to get so many different sounds. That only comes with acoustic sets, numerous hours of practice and talent. Much respect, RIP sir.
I know, there is that disadvantage with electric but theres also alot of pros about electrics aswell, you dont have to tune them. theyre easier to move etc.

Now, it's great because it isn't as refined and produced as modern computerized music? Seems like a swinging door. Plenty of current Artists have been incorporating Americana music into their stuff. I used to live in a condo years ago and my 90 year old neighbor used to take his drums and go with his band to the se ior citizens home to play music for the “old people”. He was a real character. RIP Mr. Bob.
This is actually Albert Tootie Heath one of the famous Heath brothers. The other Heath brothers are Percy Heath who was a upright bass player, and Jimmy Heath who was a tenor player. Tootie Heath was famous for playing with Dexter Gordon in Copenhagen where a lot of black musicians went on hiatus to escape the racist Jim Crow south. Tootie Heath passed a couple of months ago but gave us a gift in the form of an immense recorded catalog of his playing. Roy Hanes is equally as great but is still alive today.

Roy Haynes, one of the finest and most recorded jazz drummers ever. He's been playing drums for 80 years. Might be a bit stiff nowadays, but he sure as hell won't skip a beat!

They must have known each other since the 40s or 50s. Tootie could have been a great standup, but I’m really glad he shared his gifts as a drummer
