Great video. I’ve found those expandable towelettes under the name Wysi Wipes on Amazon. And I actually use those as my TP and use LightLoad Towels to wash myself and carry another to wipe my tent, I’ve found that when I use TP I end up using quite a bit but use only one wipe per ...requirement haha. Can’t wait to see the trip.
Thanks! Yes! That’s what they are. I appreciate you looking them up. Interesting. I’ll have to try these instead of TP. BUT I’m still taking it on this trip in case I have to retreat.
LOL .. I switched to a bidet this year... I was VERY hesitent... but it has simplified my trail life ha ha.. so far so good. Although now that the fear of not having enough TP is gone... the fear of not having enough water has replaced it.. LOL!
I’m with ya! Lol. I was thinking about the bidet option like Juan Veruete Fishing mentioned but then thought if I use that much TP on the trail the bidet would need to be a pressure washer. Lol
Nice video! LOL, in the beginning i also took a whole toiletroll with me, now i take: 3x three pieces of toiletpaper and one wet whipe per day and started to use a a bidet also
i take a whole roll too. i started with the sawyer squeeze and then switched to the katadyn. after going through about four katadyn filters, im back to a sawyer squeeze and loving it. the thing just works. the katadyn lasted anywhere from 30- 60 days of everyday use depending on the quality of the water being filtered.
That’s a good point. The befree functioning is dependent on how clean or dirty the water is. I went through a lot of the befrees but they kept slowing to the point they stopped working. Every one. So sawyer for me from now on. I’ve been using the same one now all year and it is still going strong.
Great video, I never had flow issues with my katadyne filter but the last one made the water have a strange taste. Have a good trip, looking forward to the video.
I thought about using my buff but I don’t think it would be comfortable in the heat of summer. Love your gear by the way and what you did for your community making masks was an amazing thing to do. Makes the wait for my pack worth it!
it was my third trip out there. If you have room.. take your fly rod and a couple flies.... there are some beatiful blue lines out there and the native brookies are colorful!@@backpackingadventures4813
You have lots of great gear. I have a lot of those things but there’s definitely a few items I’m going to look into that I don’t have. Have fun on your trip 👍
Great gear loadout!.... For the Katadyn.... Never use tap water ....If it gets slow or jammed.... Put (pure water..no minerals) in a glass and soak it in it for 15-30 min... it will work like a new one ;) done this plenty of times .... always works :)
I could have a brand new one and be on a 4 day trip and by the 4th day it pretty much stops working even when I shake it. It does it for everyone I buy so it has to be me. Others use them on a thru hike with no problem. When you say pure water do you mean distilled water or just bottled water like avian?
@@backpackingadventures4813 as long as it's without minerals (calcium) in it...they will say it on the bottle...Demineralized water. Soak the filter in it 15-30 or more.... and after it works like a charm (always worked for me).... You're not lucky with your filters :( ... I never had a problem yet.
Nice look at the gear for 6 days out. I'm with you better off taking the roll just in case it's not much of a weight sacrifice. I unfortunately lost my Ultrapod which was rock solid and replaced it with the grip. The grip failed at the ball socket area after 5 trips just a heads up. It's not all of them but it seems to be a common thing with the grip. I have been looking at the capture clip for my M50 hope to have that for my next trip. Thanks for mentioning the battery/ SC card door that's good to know I'm sure other camera models have the same issue. Have a great hike can't wait to follow along on that one.
+Dragon Roams Thanks. I have the ultra pod mini but when I add the camera clip I have to put an adapter on the tripod which weighs a lot. That along with the camera and mic make it too heavy and the camera doesn’t stay up so I had to switch to the grip. I’ve been using the grip for a while and so far it is doing well. Good to know about the ball joint though. I’ll have to be careful
As you demonstrated after you get your gear dialed in to what you like the only real variable in packing is how much food to take and that's normally determined by the length of the trip. One exception for me is finding lighter weight items that will replace the heavier ones. I haven't tried they YET .. I got 2 of the 48 inch carbon fiber poles from zpacks. They break down into 5 sections and weight 2.6 oz per pole. I want to use them as a substitute for my treaking poles when setting up the tent.
I thought of the slacks carbon fiber pole. But I find that cnock makes their trekking poles to fit the height of the altaplex. Since I am a trekking pole user I figure I wouldn’t have to carry the trekking pole jack. However, I ordered my cnock trekking poles I’m March and I have yet to receive a shipping date so maybe I should have just suck with the pole jack. But you are right. Usually your gear doesn’t change regardless of the length (month time frames excluded). It is only the food that does.
Great job, thank you. Just one comment on the foam pad, i tried the same method with my backpack but each time the pad slipped away from my back while i was walking. It disturbed me a lot. I put it in to my bag at the end. Hope it does not happen to you.
I’ve had it there before and it seemed to be ok but I see what you are saying about it curling up. I know my sit pad (cut down thermarest foam pad) stays pretty well in place. I did order a new pack from Hilltop Packs for my Vermont long trail thru hike that has a pocket for the sit pad. That is a great idea.
HHHaa, toilet paper part makes me laugh! im with you, 1/2 roll😊, your quilt looks super light! i need upgrade one like that! such great reviews! Love it! thanks so much for the awesome upload! enjoyed watching!😊😊😊
Some really good tips on how to bring the weight down. I wrote some stuff down. See if I can find it here in Europe. Shipping from the US is often very expensive!
Hello my friend, good gear load out. I am struggling getting my weight down. My summer base pack weight is 23 lbs and total pack weight for 3 days is 34 lbs. I really want to get my weight down but the cost is so expensive. My pack is an Osprey Atmos 65 L. I am saving money to get the Z-packs Arc Haul. That will be shave 2 lbs. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Thanks! It definitely can get expensive! My pack weight for a one night trip used to be upwards of 50 pounds. The biggest thing I did to decrease my weight to not take as much. I realized I didn’t need a big bushcraft knife because I want bush crafting. I did that for many smaller things that really added up but the biggest drop in weight for me was to not take all the clothes I was taking. Especially in the summers. Winter is different though. Another thing to do to get a handle on your gear is to list everything with the weights in a spreadsheet by category and item. That way you can see what your heaviest items are besides the obvious like your tent or sleeping pad. Then you can focus on them to get the weight down. Listing your gear also allows you to look at your gear and determine if it was something you use on trail or not. Then you can decide whether or not you really should bring it. Exceptions being safety stuff like a first aid kit, etc. it takes some time to set up your list but it comes in handy. I use it to figure out what gear I want to take on a specific trip without even getting any gear out. I’m not always ultralight. It is usually in the warmer months. I wanted to try ultralight for a period of time to really experience it but for the most part I’m not. For this trip I was about one bandaid away from being over 10 pounds. Lol. And as the weather cools I’ll add more clothes and heavier quilts so no ultralight until next year. As an example, I’m planning on doing the standing stone trail here in PA the end of September and so far my base weight for this trip is at 13.5 pounds since I’m using my hammock set up which is almost 2 pounds heavier than my tent setup. Have you look at your gear list really hard to see if there are things you can leave behind?
Backpacking Adventures hello my friend, I reviewed my gear lately and actually have a video that I will be posting next week. It is what I packed for a 3 day adventure. I know I can shave 2 lbs with a new pack. I will have to go through my gear and catalog each piece. Thanks for that suggestion. Enjoy your trip. Maybe some time we can do a meet up. But I am really slow. I do about 1.5 to 2 miles per hour and under 10 miles per day. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Backpacking Adventures we definitely should plan a meet up. My email is in the video descriptions. I look forward to hearing from you. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Why does your back pocket look so flappy and worn?? Been looking into a LiteAf pack but I keep seeing these back pockets look like crap after moderate use. That plus an almost 6 month lead time may be enough to pass them up...
I never had it floppy when I had everything packed. I think it looked this way because my food bag was empty (except for my cook kit) so my pack wasn’t filled. But overall I never had a problem with it when fully packed. However, I’m looking into purchasing an even smaller pack this year since I am getting my gear really dialed in and a 35 Liter is a little too much pack. Otherwise it won’t be filled and the top, not just the pocket, will be floppy. 6 months is really long. Probably because they shut down for a while during the pandemic and got backlogged. When I first bought it the wait was about 4 weeks or so.
I'm no light feather either but, its amazing how we talk about putting Sun screen into a lip bomb bottle to save weight. Imagine losing 30 pounds ? I'm down 20 now, but more like 50 to a go but seems a little funny no ? Your video was very good 👌 Mountain House cozy never thought of 👍. People got to look into that Swiss Army knife it's my favorite, wish the leatherman squirt wasn't db the price.
I think for me the sunscreen in the chapstick bottle was more about space than weight. It does save a little weight, which adds up, but mainly space. Speaking of losing weight. I lost 40 this year so far and I’m trying for 40 more. But you are right. I cut tags off, make small changes all to save weight and it is funny. That was one of my motivations to lose weight. If I could lose body weight, it would also be less weight on my legs and feet. So as of now I am 40 pounds lighter on my feet. The mountain house thing was one of those things for space savings. I made a pot cozy from reflectix. It doesn’t weigh much at all but it takes up space in my food bag. When I was planning for this trip I was planning on 6 days so I was looking to save space on my food bag. I figured when you put water in the mountain house packet you don’t need a cozy because the bag IS the cozy. So when I was putting them in ziplock bags, again to save space, I rinsed one out and used it. Now that’s what I always use when I need a cozy. That little Swiss Army knife is great. I love it. I haven’t had to use it all last year and only once the year before but it has everything I need in a small, light package. I have the squirt as well but prefer the Swiss Army knife.
@@backpackingadventures4813 hey man that's good to hear! I've been camping canoeing for the past 5 years and it really is a change we probably all need in today's climate. You learn something new everyday. The way you cut the mountain House bag could even be used to pick up water for your filter and eliminate the other container.
That’s awesome. I didn’t think of that. It probably could. I wonder if it would degrade from being wet over time. Sounds like an experiment for me this season!
