Now all we need is for someone to make a SEGA Pluto, one that let's us play, not only SEGA Saturn, but also SEGA Genesis, Master System, 32X & SEGA CD & 32X CD games!
So then, wouldn't the real end goal here be to make some version of the Dreamcast that plays Dreamcast, Saturn, 32X, Sega CD, Genesis, Master system, and Game Gear games? Once you nail that you have it all, the perfect all-in-one Sega console. Although I don't personally like the Dreamcast shell, so maybe something closer to the CDX in appearance could be the key.
@@Oysterblade84 Yeah, but that looks absolutely terrible in terms of the physical hardware design and is obviously in a bit of a mess right now. I mean something that looks as good as this Neptune or the Sega CDX with no issues and basically retail quality. Nail that and it would be dang cool. If Sega had actual wisdom, it would be making this as I type.
I find it fun how people are interested in the Sega Neptune now. I learned about it in 2010 from the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. The main character, Neptune, was named after this console!
Luckily you can put a model 2 Genesis inside the Neptune shell without a 32x. Which makes it a lot easier and cheaper for people to approach. Also Krikzz has been working on a fpga 32x adapter cartridge. Which would be perfect for this project. It would make the mod vastly easier and help reduce the original 32x systems being cannibalized. But I absolutely love this project. It's so cool!!!
The 32X would have been a great platform for all the arcade games that were too beefy for the 16 bit machines but didn't really need the full power of the next generation. Had it lived it could have been a great place for Capcom's CPS2 lineup or Neo Geo stuff. The quick and dirty MKII port was quite good on it so with a little TLC an MK3 port could have been great. Arcade accurate Ninja Turtles, etc. Had they not released both the 32X and Saturn on top of each other, the 32X could have been a perfect stopgap. Use it for all those games with Virtua Fighter being it's exclusive killer app while the Saturn spends an extra year to cook and then launch the Saturn in fall '95 with Virtua Fighter 2. They could have canceled the CDX and instead released the 32X and Neptune simultaneously for people who either owned a Genesis already or late adopters and had it shoulder the load for 12-18 months. Then once the Saturn launches after some more time in the oven it could be quietly retired.
Thank you, George! As an aside, I once sent a Genesis 2 for the 3BP mod and asked them to fix the reset button on it (that admittedly, I messed up), and they were very nice about it and did a fantastic job. Glad we have folks like them doing great work.
That is pretty damn awesome. The retro gaming community is full of some really awesome people. I saw the real Sega Neptune is the Sac Gamers Expo the first time it was ever shown off to the public. One of my big regrets is that I didn't make it out there the year that you ended up going to that event.
Love it dude. Looking to get my own made this coming year, which I think we spoke about when you were on our side of the pond. Will be on permanent display in our new arcade. You’ll have to come visit!
That's awesome, Adam, a truly beautiful piece of hardware, congrats! I hope Gamescare's Neptune project takes off down here cause if it does I'll be definitely after one! Regards 👍
Thanks, George...! Given my love for 32X I would have definitely have upgraded to Neptune had it been released. Never heard of the Pluto before. What is that...? Thanks for the cool video, mate...! 👍🏻
What a neat novelty console mod. As you stated this will out of the reach of many, myself included. But even if it wasn't the issues with power button kind of scares me off of even considering it. At that price point that really shouldn't be happening. Anyway thanks as always Adam. And thank you to George for building this unit so Adam could share it with us.
Great video adam. I’ve talked to a few hardware engineers that said Sega put together a few prototypes by basically the same method. One said that they housed the Frankensteined boards together with no shell or anything. Also in the SEGA of North America CEO Tom Kalinski has said the point of 32x was to extend the life of genesis…. I think the idea of it changed multiple times during development but the Bussiness idea of it is Sega didn’t want to lose the customer base of the millions of 16 bit systems they sold. So it was meant as some stop gap safety net to keep selling cartridge games while also launching Saturn. As far as why the Neptune is becoming more popular. I think it’s about this is the new frontier of game history and collecting. I met so many completionist collectors at the Portland retro show that basically have entire collections… and this is a new thing. Just a theory….. A ______ theory.
Does it work with the Master System adapter and Magic Key? I found that the 32X doesn't work with either of them. I had to keep taking the 32X off to play the Master System adapter. Curiously, the Game Genie still worked in the 32X for getting around region lockouts.
Another great video. . What I reckon they should have done is with the sega Saturn is made it 32x compatible with that cartridge slot. At 1st glance when the Saturn came out I thought and so many of my friends thought that the cartridge slot that the Saturn had was going to be 32x compatibility but that was not the case. I wonder if sega at the time was considering it. Would have been so much better in the long run. In saying that once the Neptune comes out in Brazil and hopefully they nail it and gets it right I definitely want to try and get one.. Another awesome video Adam keep up the good work
Dude, you got a lot of friends in the retro gaming community. I ain't complaining because I always look forward to your videos where you talk about more gaming goodness, but still.
The VA4 a.k.a. The 3/4 motherboard Model 2 genesis systems. Basically they output a cleaner audio & video quality than even the HDG Genesis Model 1s. I’ve owned a few of them. Love them but prefer the model 1 aesthetics. I helped provide feedback on the Neptune shell & now there’s a new shell that’s shallower based on the original’s specs & the mod involves a complete custom board that you solder the components from donor systems, brings back the spring-loaded doors & fixed the issues with the buttons. I need to set some money aside to get a Neptune shell done & the board. Plus I have the means to design custom packaging. I may need your friend’s contact info so I can get the SEGA & Genesis 32X stencil work done.
I’ve always believed this product, SegaCD, and the Nomad could have survived if there had been some type of official trade-in credit program for old Genesis systems and other products that they no longer wanted to support. Although it would have been expensive for Sega to contract retailers to act as a middle man, offering the credit to the consumers, the good will built between the retailers and consumers for Sega would have likely created a more robust parallel low-budget market that could have lived alongside the Saturn and the PlayStation.
I think the increased attention/desire for the Neptune is part of nostalgic Millenials now having the cash to demand such products. I think that there is a pool of people who are devoted enough to want to buy a Genesis and are intrigued by the 32X but don't want to go the extra step of adding an extra component that needs additional cables, power supply, and can fail separate from the system. Basically it's a surge of people who are intested and willing to pay for ease of use.
I love and hate things like this. Part of me is like “that’s freaking bad ass!” And the other part of me is like “I don’t even have my current 32x even hooked up, what do I need that for” none the less, it’s pretty cool seeing one in action especially living next to old Pluto there.
