I read online that the lyrics of this are taken from a conversation that was overheard between some electronics store workers. And ever since I learned that, I think, how wild that must have been for the workers when they heard this song?! Like, just imagine it. You're chatting with a coworker, and you find out later that a rock star happened to overhear your conversation, used it as inspiration for song lyrics, AND the song becomes a hit! How would y'all feel if that happened to you? My mind would be totally blown!

And, for some reason, to this very day, when someone says anything about their boss, unless I've seen said boss in person, the guy from this video is just inserted by my mind.
Y'know something funny is that the guys who animated the video aren't the biggest fans. They became known as "the guys who did money for nothing" and they didn't like that because this completely overshadowed their other CG animation. My dad showed me this video and when he realized it was the radio edit he yelled "oh man they cut out the part where he calls him a f*aggot!" I couldn't stop laughing.
This is quite possibly the greatest plot ever. It is about some Department store people watching MTV and saying they should have learned to play an instrument
No, They gave an interview, the song is about some movers moving their furniture into a new house in U.S. - they overheard them making these comments, lol. The comments fit exactly.
I'm Arthur Bhutic! I was 9 1/2 seeing this in February 1985 living of the North Carolina Border in North Chestnut Springs, South Carolina! More than a few years after I moved to Houston!
They played the intro to this at the beginning of some terrible nu metal song on the radio on my way to work this morning, I was so disappointed. Everything is OK now, I CAME HERE TO ROCK!
Old school MTV was actually good for those old enough to remember. It was cutting edge and 100% about the music. Now it's all reality TV and assorted other garbage. Beavis and Butthead were great though. But I know how MTV died: 1) 1992 - The Real World, Season 1 debutes. MTV diagnosed with stage 4 terminal brain cancer. 2) 1995 - Headbanger's Ball, cancelled without warning. MTV takes a tank round to the head. 3) 1998 - TRL - Teabagging MTV's corpse.
I live this song and the video is freaking awesome. I'm so happy that I grew up with this type of music 🎶 🎵. My generation has the best music 🎶 🎵 ever. Keep rockin and rolling 🎉🎉
I remember watching this as a kid and being amazed by the "cool graphics"... Also, I spent a lot of time at my dad's workplace where they had stacked tvs all playing MTV and I watched this video there. Here's the kicker... my dad was an appliance repairman/deliveryman so this song makes me think of him going to INSTALL MICROWAVE OVENS! He moved a crapload of refrigerators and color tvs too....
I was a Rent to Own account manager then( deliveries, collections, returns, installs, service, and etc.) Did alot of mw, apliances, stereos, furniture, and etc. Money for nothin was unofficial theme song. Lol
You shoulda stood around waiting for them to make mistakes only to chime in, "That ain't workin..." and when they fix their mistake "Thats the way you do it!"
@@momster64 How long has the pc version been out? I heard this on the radio and noticed parts were cut out and I decided to check TH-cam and parts are edited out to.
@@nickhill8612 Effectively since release; the FCC among other such authorities wouldn't allow it to be broadcast. The band has also omitted or altered the second verse to reduce or eliminate the homophobic slurs as early as 1985.
@@thegardenofeatin5965 Wow that's sad and so P.C. I promise I haven't been living under a rock lol but I just noticed the edit a few months ago. I think I remember hearing the unedited version on the radio years ago.
@@thegardenofeatin5965 I'd predict if this song was written in recent years, the second verse would probably be replaced by referring to a "douchebag" and would probably fly with little or no complaint, knowing how some "famous" people are just encouraging bad behavior in people and are just doing stuff that legitimately hurts/offends people (in ways that are not okay). Logan and Jake Paul, anyone?
+Channeleven It's Michael Bay. Autism is not required to be offended. I mean, I'm technically a Sociopath, the polar opposite of Autism, and despite not having the capability for finding something offensive, I think my reaction was similar to waking up in bed next to someone three times your age.
When my son hear this song for the very first time a few years ago he said: "dad, definitely the music of your youth were way better than mine". My deepest respect for those artists.
I told everyone this will be the number one song of 1985 first time I heard it , they laughed. By the end of that year it was number one but I never said I told you so. Best years of my life 1980's.
The perfect video to go along with this great song! Love the guitar work and the background singing by Sting! This was a video that broke new ground and started a new standard for others to follow!

A couple of facts about this video: The music video for the song featured early computer animation illustrating the lyrics. The video was one of the first uses of computer-animated human characters and was considered ground-breaking at the time of its release. Mark Knopfler said: The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. (New York) He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real. The first-person narrating character in the lyrics refers to a musician "banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee" and a woman "stickin' in the camera, man we could have some fun". He describes a singer as "that little faggot with the earring and the make-up", and bemoans that these artists get "money for nothing and chicks for free". Sting is in the video for the chorus "I want my MTV".
Sting also gets royalties from this song as a songwriter, because the tune to which "I want my MTV" is sung in the same as the Police song "Don't Stand So Close to Me".
Funny, Nostalgia Critic’s review of that was actually the last video I watched. Probably not by chance, though; a commenter compared the animation to this.
Lyrics edited to remove the non-PC bits, and music messed up. Blecch! Try to find an original CD, not a remastered (compressed) one. Much, much, MUCH better.
That makes you mad? A video was edited to remove a verse? You know this is the internet, right? You can find the original in less than 7 seconds. It still exists. For all your listening pleasure. If this makes you mad, you must spend a lot of time upset at movies edited for television. Yelling at the tv like a mental patient. Anyway, it sounds like you have emotional problems. This should not upset you. It is easily ignored. I hope you get the help you need. Good luck.

xiaochicash Hahaha, I love that movie.
xiaochicash MY BROTHER!
Love this!
xiaochicash The only reason I watched this video is because of that movie. I didn't know this song beforehand.

My dad showed me this video and when he realized it was the radio edit he yelled "oh man they cut out the part where he calls him a f*aggot!" I couldn't stop laughing.

Welcome our Brave New World.
This is quite possibly the greatest plot ever. It is about some Department store people watching MTV and saying they should have learned to play an instrument
Thanks for unveiling that inscrutable plot line, Sherlock.
No need for compliments, I'm already the greatest mind of the 21st century
Nah, you see the musicians are making some kind of statement about how it would be much worse to move tvs.
Keith Larsen Correct! Back in 1985 a TV weighed about 100 pounds!
No, They gave an interview, the song is about some movers moving their furniture into a new house in U.S. - they overheard them making these comments, lol. The comments fit exactly.
From back when MTV was GOOD
And truly musical.
Honestly I'm only 24 (so what can I say, right?) but I absolutely love this song!
What's MTV about now?
It's the pregnancy network
Ted Cantu I dont recall a musical tv channel becoming a teen pregnancy show..
Man, remember when this was top of the line graphics.
E Kramer
Looks like that Minecraft stuff
Yes unfortunately I️ do 😂
It took years after for home consoles to even come close.....idk about pc games though
What do you mean? This IS the top of the line graphics
I'm Arthur Bhutic! I was 9 1/2 seeing this in February 1985 living of the North Carolina Border in North Chestnut Springs, South Carolina! More than a few years after I moved to Houston!
my dad gave me his original Oakley eyeshades he used for skiing in the 1980s. Every time i put them on i find myself humming this song.
Matthew Higashyama
The virus begins
They played the intro to this at the beginning of some terrible nu metal song on the radio on my way to work this morning, I was so disappointed. Everything is OK now, I CAME HERE TO ROCK!
Fox Blue River but it was probably an actual good song since most of Nu Metal is great
Now that's some tasty opening riffs
delish!!!!
Thats the way you do it!
Lived thru these better days and I would trade all the technology today we have to go back. Times were easier and happier. It's awful today.
Old school MTV was actually good for those old enough to remember. It was cutting edge and 100% about the music. Now it's all reality TV and assorted other garbage. Beavis and Butthead were great though. But I know how MTV died:
1) 1992 - The Real World, Season 1 debutes. MTV diagnosed with stage 4 terminal brain cancer.
2) 1995 - Headbanger's Ball, cancelled without warning. MTV takes a tank round to the head.
3) 1998 - TRL - Teabagging MTV's corpse.
Tiger Diesel celebrity deathmatch is another mtv show that should have been around but mtv went soft

Am I the only one that gets drunk and ends up watching 80's music videos on youtube for several hours?
doug2060 no man i do it all the time. 😂😂😂 cheers dude! 🍺

LMAO I do it more often than I care to admit
Nope I do that shit almost everyday
It's a lifestyle no one should be without.
"I.... want... my.... M....T....V". I remember as a little kid this video was scary to me because of the visuals.
But did he get a blister on his little finger?
I was a rent to own delivery n repo man then. Lol , our theme son.
You should've learned to play the guitar and play them drums.
I love the 80s

Let's just not go back.

flat earthers: "the moon landing was faked! it was all CGI!"
how CGI looked in the 1980's:
Wow what an original comment
@Salvadore Orozco you spelled Arizona wrong
... ummm... Ok?!..
@Salvadore Orozco False, the moon landing was fake, but it was filmed on site for added authenticity
You should have seen the moon landing. I could have staged it.
This song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985
My pre walking into work anthem back in the day 63 now and still rockin
I remember when this video was considered state-of-the-art CGI... and I remember its unedited non-PC version.
Me too, I still think it's pretty cool!
@@momster64
How long has the pc version been out?
I heard this on the radio and noticed parts were cut out and I decided to check TH-cam and parts are edited out to.
@@nickhill8612 Effectively since release; the FCC among other such authorities wouldn't allow it to be broadcast. The band has also omitted or altered the second verse to reduce or eliminate the homophobic slurs as early as 1985.
@@thegardenofeatin5965
Wow that's sad and so P.C.
All the great music back then, what a time to be alive.
Beautiful Masterpiece, one of the best songs of all time

Better special effects than any Michael Bay movie
and more story line!
+Hammer of Justice Crushes You OVERPOWER and significantly less offensive!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA thanks!
+Hammer of Justice Crushes You OVERPOWER Autism intensifies.
This is my all time favorite “MTV” video. This is when MTV really rocked.
I told everyone this will be the number one song of 1985 first time I heard it , they laughed.
By the end of that year it was number one but I never said I told you so.
Best years of my life 1980's.
The perfect video to go along with this great song! Love the guitar work and the background singing by Sting! This was a video that broke new ground and started a new standard for others to follow!
everytime I see this videos it reminds me when i was a kid telling my younger brother Nintendo well have graphics like this someday..
That animation in the beginning reminds me of that Austrialian Nintendo commercial. You know the one.

This was cutting edge technology when it was made. Now it's every quirky steam indie game.
Technology is awesome
When MTV was relevant. Video killed the radio star, computer killed the MTV star.
@duckiedale80 I loved the original MTV, watched from the beginning.
i remember shows like yo mtv raps, headbangers ball, bevis and butthead, the grind mtv in the mid 80's and early 90's was very creative now its just bullshit
@@halfogre7843 I know how you feel, friend - my fave-raves from MTV included Remote Control, Closet Classics Capsule (which, one night, included Nancy Sinatra) and Daria.
wasnt colin quinn and adam sandler used to be on remote control?
@@halfogre7843 From what I recall, Colin Quinn was on "Remote Control", which was hosted by the late Ken Ober; to use the terminology of Colin Quinn, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Back when my son was young. And alive.
A couple of facts about this video:
The music video for the song featured early computer animation illustrating the lyrics. The video was one of the first uses of computer-animated human characters and was considered ground-breaking at the time of its release.
Mark Knopfler said:
The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store.
Thanks Casey Kasem😆
.....but first...

I still want my MTV from the 1980's - Damn it!!!
Lyrics edited to remove the non-PC bits, and music messed up. Blecch! Try to find an original CD, not a remastered (compressed) one. Much, much, MUCH better.
+JiveDadson It sounds like shit compared to the original
That makes you mad? A video was edited to remove a verse? You know this is the internet, right? You can find the original in less than 7 seconds. It still exists. For all your listening pleasure.
If this makes you mad, you must spend a lot of time upset at movies edited for television. Yelling at the tv like a mental patient.
Anyway, it sounds like you have emotional problems. This should not upset you. It is easily ignored. I hope you get the help you need. Good luck.
+m marco well, censorship makes me mad.
