      I think they may be invested in her life and see her as some sort of a friend. So, I am assuming their intentions are 'good' and want the 'best' for her by imposing their worldview and personal values on her like an overbearing friend or parent would. Or some of these people either just have a lot of opinions and do not consider their words as potentially hurtful and offensive to her.

    I completely support everything you say in your argument for why you went to college yet want to be a TH-camr. However, I would also like to add the point that a lot of your earlier, more popular videos, ones where you give advice about college and school, are so successful because the fact that you have a Harvard degree and, therefore, can be treated as a trusted source.

  • @HaleJayRo
    @HaleJayRo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +307

    The fact that anyone could ever consider learning, meeting a culturally diverse group of people, and just generally expanding one's intellectual capacity a waste is absolutely absurd. College is never a waste of money! I loved your video, you articulated yourself extremely well and made a very compelling case against those ignorant comments. :)

    It's the Privilege you have the people who say these comments are mad about. Privilege will either help you or bring you down. In my case I'm privileged based on where I live (In a 3rd world Country) my parents send me of to private schools and such. But I would never get into schools such as Harvard, Yale, etc. Because the middle class in my country does not equate to yours. It's interesting to be in a environment of intellectual people, but in my case of being in a middle class family watching half my countrymen suffer makes you think about the injustices of the world much more. Which makes what some people have weight much more to me, I can't do what I want (Art) after college because I would not make much money for myself and most importantly my family. Therefore I push myself to study harder, get scholarships in college and help my family.

  • @bittertea

    I think the problem people have with you going to Harvard but ultimately deciding to start a youTube career is the fact that you took the spot of someone who could have been a Politician, Scientist, Academic or Business Entrepreneur. Hard to pinpoint because I don't know your degree or area of study. I have this feeling its either business or liberal arts.
    Since you choose a career in entertainment, it seems like an opportunity cost to society, not necessarily to you, although the comments are directed at your supposed bad judgement. I am not talking about money and a job. I am talking about the overall contribution to society.
    As someone who loves art and how it is under valued in society, I have a sympathetic and a bit more optimistic view of your choice. Conan O'Brian went to Harvard and ended up in comedy. He brings joy and enriches people's lives with his humor. With someone who is use to a high standard, I hope this continues to be reflected in your channel. Also, I hope you cover "more serious" topics with insight and wit. Pressure is privilege and I hope you take all that negativity and turn it into something great.

      This isn't 60 years ago. The majority of people will never have only one career. We wont have that security! It's shifting in the way employers hire. They dont care what your degree was in,, they care that you have a degree and have critical thinking skills. They then weigh more on what skill sets you hold. She did not choose a career. She chose a temp job. More varying background experiences can later add up to a very specialized awesome job! Shes not limiting her future self like most people do. She's smart.

    I am so happy you decided to address this, and may I add, in a very graceful manner. I honestly could not have said it better. My father always told me: "Once you get your degree, you can do whatever you want to do in life", obviously financial and career security is important for him. But you obviously have that security, (I mean you went to the best university in the world for crying out loud) and you definitely are a bright young woman who seems to have her goals set, and her head straight, which i look up to and admire very much. I have been watching your videos for a while now, and I am so glad that I stumbled upon your videos the first time I discovered you because you have become a huge role model to me. I just wanted to say that these comments were clearly written by closed minded people who have a hard time understanding that their ideals and opinions regarding success may not necessarily apply to everyone else in the world. So keep your head high, and you do you.

    This was a great video. I remember when you first put out the video about what you're doing post geaduation, and while I didn't feel the need to comment a judgy, rude statement of my thoughts, I definitely was confused and felt that personally I wouldn't have made that same choice. But this video gave me a great understanding of why you did it and overall I think it gave me a lot of perspective. I'm about to start my final year of high school and the line you said about college not being for a job, but rather for personal enrichment, really resonated with me. In an environment where everyone around me seems obsessed with what degree/college gets what job and how much money each job will get, it was refreshing and frankly, inspiring to hear someone say what you did. Thank you, and keep making your awesome videos!!

    No tea, no shade, but pointing this out because it's increasingly common: there's a good chance there are no good job opportunities right off the bat for people with BAs even from Harvard. Alot of degrees are fairly useless no matter where you get them. I have a useless BA as well and that's why I went to professional school after. It's just what college has become now a days. Undergrad is a money scam 90% of the time. I can tell you as someone who spent almost a decade in university and has worked in the real world you learn way more and meet many more different people in a real job then you ever could at college.

    Yes it is super respectable that she's doing what she is passionate about but 7 million views is still only about $7,000 over three years which isn't livable and that's why I think some people are looking at her living off of who knows what now that she's home, yet being able to comfortably sit on a prestigious college degree. It's that ridiculous privilege that some people are mad at, not that she isn't "successful", just very few people have that opportunity to be in a situation like hers.

    • @foureyeswonder
      @foureyeswonder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Scholarbound What he meant by privilege is the privilege to be able to focus on things other than money, which you can see from her lack of concern or worry towards how she finances her studies at Harvard, which some can't afford even if they were able to be accepted by the university.

      Thanks to their endowment, Harvard has the most generous financial aid policy in the world. If you can get accepted, they will make sure you can afford to attend. Their main concern is to attract the best and brightest regardless of financial background. Only the most elite schools like Harvard and Stanford can afford to do this. That is likely why she is not too concerned about finances.

  • @donjohn8034

    It's about credential-ism. That's what it's all about. You need a degree to show EVERY employer, that you have it in you to stick with something and succeed at it. You have a great channel btw. I think the reason so many people here are upset is because MOST undergrad students who graduate with a bachelor's degree have a really hard time getting a job after. What happens most often is they end up as an assistant manager somewhere for several years and at some point give up on themselves a little and become a substitute teacher and make no more than 34K a year. So when you graduate from the most prestigious institution in the world and just leave the Harvard degree locked away in the file cabinet and pursue youtube, many people here get a sour taste in their mouth. So many people graduating from public universities are spending 2 decades or more after they graduate just trying to land a 100K job. Then they see you on here with a Harvard degree and could easily land a 200K job within six months of graduating Harvard. I know none of us need to go to college, but the name of the game presently is "credential-ism".

    I can agree so much with you! You can literally do a bootcamp for coding and become a programmer/web developer/etc! My mom became a producer at a top Korean broadcasting company (5 years ago) from making church videos even though she had a degree in business. It is truly the individual-not the school-who shapes their future! I can also agree with something you said in the middle of the video. I didn't take my AP Physics C E&M and Mechanics just to get a high grade and have a better college application (in fact it actually lowered my GPA), but because I wanted to surround myself with individuals who loved to challenged themselves and were different from all my friends who just liked to shop and gossip!

    I think that culture and social status are the reasons why these people reacted in certain ways. If I've watched this video a few years back, I would have said the same negative things. Acquiring a good education in a poverty stricken society is the most usual way to get out of it. Therefore, the notion of education equates to money is ingrained to us since childhood. I was only able to get out of that mentality when our financial situation improved and I can finally see 'the' world and not just 'our' world.
    Taylor, I actually admire your bravery and your videos help me form my own journey and find my real purpose. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us.

Not everyone can just go to college and then decide not to do anything with their degree that they paid for..

The whole point of this video was to prove that it's not about the money she makes out of TH-cam or anything related with what the society expects from a Harvard graduate. After watching her videos for the past 6 months I have a better and more down-to-earth perception about Harvard and I think we should all thank her for that.

    Love your perspectives on the value of your degree. As a fellow Harvard grad, much older than you, I can attest to all that you have said. "Success" does indeed mean very different things to different people, or to the same person at different stages of his or her life. While you and I share the experience of a Harvard education, there are many other paths to success in life, however you choose to define it. The key, as you are demonstrating by the choices you are making, is to be open to experiences, to be willing to pursue different or nontraditional avenues, and to never be afraid to choose a path that feels right for you - or as you so wisely point out, to choose not to take a path that others might want you to take. It is also important to not be afraid to fail, to have confidence in yourself to be able to recover from the curveballs life will inevitably throw at you. That self-confidence is the most valuable aspect of my Harvard experience, the knowledge that challenge is good and not be be feared. That is how I have lived my own life, and while I have never earned seven figures, I have made my own impacts in life, in ways that are meaningful to me. I consider my life to be very successful, and have never felt the slightest amount of regret at not letting money in and of itself guide my life decisions - though it is also important to make choices that allow you to support yourself and take care of other responsibilities in your life. Finding balance is key, and that is a continuous process in life. Keep up the good work!

    I have watched many of your videos, as a matter of fact, I'm a 'bell' subscriber (lol bell subscriber 😂). But this was definitely one of my favorite videos (talk sess). What I see in society these days is persons going to college only for the purpose of getting a Job; so much so that they study things that they really are not interested in but they do it anyway because they'll definitely get a job after university. And when I saw this in the world, I kinda felt alone because college for me is a place to feed my intellectual curiosity, learn new skills , meet new people and everything else is an icing on the cake. But this video, and a lot of the comments that are attached to it show that I'm not really alone after all.
