- COMING JANUARY 2016: It's here, Vintage '47 Amps new model, the VA-185G, based on the classic Gibson EH-185. The tube complement is 6SN7, 6SQ7, 2x6L6, and 5Y3. Speaker is a 12" Vintage '47 Alinco Hempcone made by Tone Tubby.
I shot this video before everything was "official", so forgive the secrecy implied at the beginning.
I'm demoing the VA-185G next to my original 1939 EH-185, and using my 1937 Gibson ES-150.
A couple notes on the variations between the two amps:
1) The VA-185G is based on the second generation EH-185 circuit, whereas my original is the first generation circuit, with both a different tube complement, and both treble and bass controls rather than a single tone knob
2) When the chassis is placed inside the speaker cabinet of the original EH-185, it makes the amp act as a closed-back cabinet. The VA-185G is an open back cab. It would be interesting to compare the VA-185G to the final generation of Gibson EH-150, which shared the same circuit with the second generation EH-185, but was in the open backed square cabinet.
Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed at close the VA-185G comes to the essential character and tone of the original, and how, once I get going, it can be hard to remember which one I'm playing through.
