It's a dirty job but somebodies got to do it. Why does that somebody have to be me?
Before I begin scooping up the bat poo in the attic, I get to sand a 21' spruce beam in the vestry of the church. The sanding isn't much fun but I quite enjoy applying the stain.
Amanda has a go at staining the beam but it's quickly decided that she'd be best in a supervisory role.
For once, I actually drop some essential home improvement advice that could save you thousands of dollars and a lot of strife. Don't make the mistake I did.
Thanks for watching

We need an update please!
It's been a while since you're posted here. I know you've done a lot of work on the house since shooting it. I look forward to seeing your progress, drinking a coffee, and thinking all the while "Better you then me."
In swing doors are fine for entrances, fit a weather bar to the outside bottom edge. That way any rain coming down the door face will be deflected away from the doorstep.
I fear that our area is too windy for in-swing to be viable.
@@HardcastleTowers Or build a porch, that would give added weather protection. I had a house in the UK that had it's front door facing west, it got lashed with rain and wind. I fitted a weather bar on the door and a metal 'upstand' into the frame cill, it worked.
By code all exterior doors open out. I would have someone else do that attic work with a large vacuum Insulation company.
It may depend on a local code, but *usually*, residential exterior wall doors open inward but there will also be a screen or storm door that opens outward.
Any updates? (Retrieved 08/2024) 😄
Nearly all home entry doors are “in-swing”. About the only time you find an “out-swing” door is on trailer houses. There should be a rubber seal on the bottom of the door which should align with a piece of rubber on the threshold. The threshold should then also slope outwards.
apparently it's code to have out swings in Nova Scotia. Gale force winds.
As another commenter said, put an awning or gutter over that door. The splash off the stoop is what really causes issues.
The door is now fixed. No leaks, no splash, no gutter. Just switched it to an outswing.
That was what I thought the first second. Man, I'm smart. I would follow the other guys advice too: Have a company suck the whole mess up and start over with nice clean insulaton. @@HardcastleTowers
You need a porch (a little roof with some posts) that gives your door a kind of shelter against bad weather conditions.
Just thought of you and your channel and was excited to see your progress. 6months? I hope everything is ok. Not prying. Sending you good wishes🙏🏻
Didn't think I would enjoy this channel as much as your photo channel, but here I am watching all these episodes a second time :-D
That is no small task for sure, you are handling it like a trooper. The sunset looked tasty too
Way too late (as you said by the time this was posted the job was done), and perhaps cost prohibitive, but did you consider bringing in a commercial vacuum truck (the hoses are easily a couple feet across) to suck all that guano and insulation out of the attic; even if it meant cutting an access hole in the floor (or roof itself)? Have seen in your photo vlogs how great your new home is looking (nice work!). Loving seeing these videos; am happy to patiently wait for the next :). Cheers!
My thought exactly. Commercial vacuum truck.
More episodes pronto!
Out swing door on a house. Never seen one. Not sure about that advice Gavin.
In Australia we'll often have a small strip at the base of the door called a weather strip. It kinda slants out, two parts to it. One is metal and then a rubber base. Good for wind, rain, and bugs. Oh and snakes and spiders . . . . . mice too probably.
Out swing doors might be the better option but I mostly see in swing here in the UK but there's usually an angle strip along the bottom of the door to deflect run-off water outwards.
I love watching a skilled craftsman at work, you should try it 😂
Gav, be careful in the attic of those nails coming through the roof arch, maybe bring a small battery angle grinder and cut the excess off them. Wouldn't be any harm eithe rto make a hole in the roof and insert a small vent to allow airflowand maybe release some of the stench at the same time. Great to see this vid and look forward to future ones. And you must go on a new exploration with Grumpton.
Vinegar can be used to neutralize urine, helps get rid of the smell. We use it whenever one of our dogs has an accident in the house.
This is so strange. Me and my partner were just binge watching these the other day and I was saying it’s been a while and you mentioned you struggled to have time for the vids on your other channel. So happy you’ve done another!
Yep it so much better than the programs on the BBC, watching paint dry !
I love watching (other) people's paint dry!
If your home turns out anything like your pics it is going to be superb
Hi Gavin, just to let you know the lights you don't like, if they're original opaline glass with the gallery on the top could be worth quite a lot of money so please dont throw them away . cheers Mike.
Bob Ross style removing the excess from that brush 😂 🖌️
I used to strip and refinish furniture for a living when I came to the U.S. and if I never smell the scent of Minwax stain again it would not bother me. Your place is looking great, and really coming along.
I don't know; maybe it's just me. But I would have done that sanding and prep before the beam was hung. Just say'n.
The beam weighed about 500 lbs.
@@HardcastleTowers That's nothing for a man of your stature and intellect.
Best Landscape Photography video you have done so far. Even Thomas Heaton would struggle to better 😃🤣
Oh my goodness. Hold the presses. That’s your home? Those beautiful wood arches and curved ceilings/wall. Whoa! So beautiful.
Hey, Gavin, I think you need to enable superthanks for this video (or channel?).
oops I'll check now
Exterior doors are almost aways in swing. Most doors have an adjustable sweep on the bottom.
After 26+ years since we bought our house, (108 years old), I’m still working on it. I told my wife the other day that if I ever decide to buy an old house to remodel, just shoot me!
Btw. Uk antique dealers sell those lampshades for around 100 quid a pop. Fyi…opaline glass..
Patiently waiting on a video update, can’t wait to see the finished product! Good luck!
Gavin, not sure if anyone else mentioned it but at least in the US there is a product called Nature's Miracle. I am not sure about bat odor but it is designed for Dog and Cat urine odor. There are several kinds they offer (Cat, Dog odor and others) but specifically, there is an enzyme remover type that is supposed to remove urine odor. Maybe you can buy a large drum of it somewhere and spray all the wood. Not sure, it might work. It might be something for you to look at.
thanks for the tip.
I dont know what Bat urine smells like, but nothing can be as bad as Cat urine! Some enzine gets it out. Pet stores sell it though you will need a lot. I had to remove some carpet and replace the pad. The subfloor had to be treated with the enzyme and WOW did it work!
I'm happy you said (in the other channel) that you have all this remodel in the can. I love watching this. I'll wait even if it's slow coming.
I've always thought the in-swing doors are only used in the US, makes it easier for cops to kick the door in..?
One final thing, the flicky thing for your paint brush is great; but not on your nice expensive waterproof walking boots! A chunk of wood is better as the solvent will affect your waterproofness of the boot, it can eat the glue used to bond the sole to the upper and it will (in time) affect the flexibility of the sole, leading to potential cracking! Sorry to be picky but $150 pr of boots is not worth a $5 brush! Keep up the good work.
The beams above the one you are painting could do with another coat.
While you’re up there🧐
Something that supposedly gets rid of the smell quite effectively is fire. Hope this tip helps, best of luck with the project.
A ‘weather bar’ on the bottom of the door on the outside would deflect any rain and stop it creeping under the door…commonplace on external doors in the UK…..doesn’t stop local flooding though….sadly..😮😂🎉❤
dont underestimate the zen joy that comes from watching somebody else do any kind of redecoration work. remember when we were kids, anglia tv, the figurine of a night on a horse, then some guy making something beautiful out of a lump of wood.
Oh my goodness gracious - I’ve signed up for Gavin’s September workshop in the Rockies. If I don’t come away with some outstanding photos and new photography tips then I’m sure the entertainment value will be worth it. You two are a stand up comedy team… great work to both of you!
Not sure I've been in a house where the external doors swing out... The problerm is the sealing where the door meets the sill.
Really glad to see another video on this channel. All the best for 2024.
Amanda’s home restoration and magic marker confessions channel. It’s looking good
Please Gavin, wear some noggin protection when in the roof. A coup,e if times I saw your bonce come dangerously close to nails protruding from above.
An ozone generator can do an amazing job at removing odors. You need to not be in the space while the ozone generator is running and then air out the area afterward. An ozone generator can wipe out odors in a fairly large space in less than an hour... maybe 2 hours if its really bad. I purchased an ozone generator online to remove cigarette smoke odor from a room and it completely resolved it. Walls, fabrics, everything was completely fixed. In my case, it was a 400 sq. ft. room / 37 sq. meters and the odor was resolved in only 20 minutes.
Love it and I've just seen all the episodes and can't wait to see more additional to your photography videos - so keep them all coming
Thank you for the update! You might have done the right thing with the door after all. We were told in Ontario that out swing doors were not to code because if a pile of snow drifts against them you can’t get out of the house. All the best with the project!
We have plenty of windows to jump out of.
Finally! A new video of the new home :)
The video breaks down common renovation blunders in a super relatable way, making you think twice before diving into a home project. The tips are practical and the humor keeps it engaging - definitely a must-watch before starting any home improvement!
back in the late 70s 2 boys in my village tragically died from sniffing glue 😞
on that cheery note, your gaff looks very nice 🙂
Great to see an update on your renovation, it's going to look amazing!!! For the odor problem, I have a out of the box solution (not sure if it works). At the petshop they have a spray, to get the odor of cat pee out of carpets and furniture. Not sure if it will work for your problem🤞🤞
I have been begging on instagram for about 17 months for more HCT videos... thank the gods!
Urine smells I've had good luck removing with "Nature's Miracle" which is a well-regarded enzymatic formulation. I know Clorox and Zep et. al. also make urin neutralizing formulas. Not sure how well the other's work.
Good luck and stay safe!
Hey Gavin: as a retired general contractor I always get joy outta watching DIYers do there own projects. I don't agree with some of your methods, but do enjoy watching. Good luck moving forward.
In the loft, I was actually more concerned that if you wobbled to much there were a few nails pointing right at your pineapple.
Gav, I think you should hand sand all the woodwork in the building to lighten it a little. I’ll send you over some sandpaper.
Saftey glasses and dont get paint thiner on expensive hiking boot leather, respiratory protection for stain fumes.
Powered air purifying respirator, 2 layers of tyvek disposable coveralls, rubber boots and gloves, double bag contaminant and place to decon self and bags of contaminants before moving them off site. Recommend you spend some of that Chasing Awe money on an experienced contractor.
Missing your updates.
Great to see you back Gavin! We are renovating an old Salt Box house in Newfoundland, so empathize with you on all the challenges. That said, no guano to deal with! Keep the videos coming mate, when you can!
I have an in swing door but do have a storm door to keep the rain off the door skin, I also have a paint brush and roller spinner to dry the brushes and roller covers. HINT place them in a bucket so you don't spray yourself while spinning. If you want to get rid of the smell in the attic after cleaning it up and removing the old insulation load it up with a ton of onions ( not kidding use 2000 pounds spread out) and let them sit until they dry out completely. I have done this and gets rid of cigarette smoke in vintage leather camera cases.
Love the Reno videos!! Looking forward to the next one!!
Hope you're hunkering down, I hear they called a state of emergency in the cape due to the snow. It's bad enough here so I can only imagine
For the odour have a look at ozone generator they are used to remove smells etc from cars/ houses.
So excited to see Hardcastle Tower video. Very impressed with all that you have done in the renovation, and looking forward to future updates.
Now you need to get some recreational tower built on top of your roof, so you can put your tripod up there and, and have read, and of course take a nap in a good chair. Perfect spot to scout the horizon.
Please post updates!!!
Nice to see another episode of the church. Those brush strokes could have been a satisfying ASMR video😂.
And Amanda’s magic markers… does it explain the origin of the unicorn lab?
In the absence of any grass growing, the paint drying will have to do. I shifted the loose fill insulation out of my loft with a sort of home made snow shovel! Wide bit of thin flexible wood with a wedge shape across the edge which I slid under the fill and then pulled up and towards me, then into a binbag and awayyy. There must be some kind of big vaccuum that'll pick it up tho.
Not sure if this helps: we had purchased a house from a chainsmoking couple - - the wood paneling was completely saturated with stale smoke smell, as were the ceilings, the floors, everything. We wiped everything down with an ammonia & water solution mixture - of course, be careful not to breath that in too much. It killed the smell completely. Not sure if it would work on what you have going on in the attic there, but for the wood bits, that might do the trick.
Also: shopvac with a larger funnel attachment (maybe just cardboard and duct tape) might cut down on the dust you kick up, rather than shoveling all that junk?
Totally get the fact this is a side line to the main day job. Good to see it coming along. I think the reason why people, myself included, like this channel, and it's a bit like the daily vlogs Tom was doing, is that it gives us the viewer an inside to you being you and what you do that isn't take magnifica images. We get to see a bit of you as a person and it feels like we're hanging out with a mate.
Ceiling joists is what they are called. Get the insulation and bat shit out…! Get a vacuum truck to suck it all out ! Cheer from down under 🍺
We've been waiting a long time for this. Thanks for bringing us along.
I hope you found the time to get rid of the guano during the colder times of the year.
Just moved ourselves Gavin and needing a tonne of work to do as well, so great to see your progress on your church-House.
I love watching paint dry Gavin. It is one of my favorite pastimes 🤣
Hey Gavin you may be able to use bleachwhite to seal the attic. I believe it is used to seal wood after fire damage.
Turned out great! I would watch Gavin stroke his beam any time!
I look forward to many more Hardcastle Towers videos. Keep 'em coming!
Really anticipating these videos. Please do them when you can. Thanks for this one!
That’s a labour of love right there, but what a dwelling it shall be. Great stuff!
I was so pumped to see a video pop up from both channels.
Hi Gavin. What a labour of love. We've renovated 6 properties, though nothing as hard core as your efforts. Respect for taking it on and the job you are doing.
That door. With timber framing, as well as getting a tight fit it is best to get a membrane around the door frame with a tail inside and then seal inside and out with Black Jack (That is a branded product in the UK. Essentially it is a cold bitumen. Horrible to apply). Gets the job done and watertight.
We are in the process of moving house and this time couldn't face a doer upper of any sort so are waiting to complete on a new build.
Anyway, great update and hope things go well.
Yeah! A new one!
liked this video because of your stroke action
Can you give us more paint drying shots, cannot beat watching paint dry. 😉
Ventilated full face mask is the way to go with all these kind of jobs. It makes the job much more comfortable even though the fan system is a bit of a hustle. I learned that while sanding our summer cottage that has pigment paint (very dusty when sanded) on the outside walls. Good luck with your project.
About time Gavin, the only reason I know things are good with the home is FB and shorts.
Good to see you back on this project
I had a penpal in the 80s from somewhere in the NE of England who said all her school mates sniffed glue 😂 I get my thrills from watching paint dry
Appreciate the update on the renovation! Looking forward to many more videos. Home is looking good!
Great stuff. Looking forward to next year’s episode
Glad to see y'all back.
Thank you for the update! Completely understand the "not my day job". Kudos for stepping up and doing so much of the work on your own!
I always enjoyed your photography videos, but these renovation videos really are enjoyable and entertaining. Keep up the great work!
Glad you're back - my wife and I were delighted to see a new video - looking forward to more in the future!
Nice job Gavin. If you look on the back of the pre stain can, it will tell you to only let it dry for roughly an hour and then apply the stain. The pre stain is to help prevent blotchiness especially on the soft pine woods.
Fantastic Progress, Gavin and Amanda!
Hey Gav we do enjoy watching you build your new home .
I’m sure uncle Grumpy and Thomas Heaton would come n help . You know .
Happy new year too x
