  • The 70th anniversary of the 5th Pan African Congress, 1945 was commemorated in Manchester in a three day conference from 16-18 October 2015, where Akala gave a totally thought provoking final presentation on Sunday 18th. More info at firstcutmedia.com/pac45/ .
AKALA: the BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip hop artist, writer/poet and historian ‘Akala’ is a label owner and social entrepreneur who fuses unique rap/rock/electro-punk sound with fierce lyrical storytelling. Inspired by the likes of Saul Williams and Gil Scot-Heron, over the years Akala has developed a stellar live show; headlining 6 UK tours as well as touring with the likes of Jay-Z, Nas & Damian Marley, M.I.A. and many more. Akala is more recently known for his compelling lectures/seminars, journalism, TV presenting and script-writing talents and has gained a reputation as one of the most dynamic and literate talents in the UK. Akala has also featured on numerous TV programmes promoting his music, poetry as well as speaking on wide ranging subjects from music, youth engagement, British / African-Caribbean culture and the arts as a whole. In 2009, Akala launched the ‘The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company’, a music theatre production company which has sparked worldwide media interest since its inception.

Man, I would like to hear the Q+A. Akala is one of the most talented and intelligent people I've come to experience in my life, and I would definitely love to see his interaction with the audience. Either way, this man has inspired me to look beyond "respecting humanity" and really see the injustice that exists (and has existed) since the beginning of time. All in all, I love listening to him speak, and I hope I can, in some way, be as influential as he is.

I can't have enough of Akala. Such a breath of fresh knowledge. Black people in Europe and America, visit Africa. White and mainstream media will make it sound as though we live in the most dangerous spot on earth but that isn't true. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Gambia, Congo and many other places are beautiful places. I have visited several European countries, but no place like Africa. If you are black or have African ancestry, take a trip to Africa. It is the Motherland! God bless Mama AFRICA

they need to go on but might use tactics to overcome the notorious hijacking by certain power structures. this should happen openly, calling those forces partners, that sure *not* exempt of criticism.
there are basics that cannot be denied, and anyone who denies, has to accept hard scrutiny.
pushing forward *too* hard and blindly, can be a case of sabotage.

9:50 Although I’m white and certainly not in a place to say I relate to the experiences of black people, this is a parallel I can see with my own experiences. I’m trans, and existing in a society where you’re absolutely not the default is exhausting, mainly because you’re constantly having to explain yourself and justify your own existence to people who are generally hostile to you. Getting into any space where you are considered the default is an immense relief and ultimately gives you an opportunity to talk about your struggles without those who wouldn’t understand interrupting. It’s a powerful thing. Thank you to Akala for this wonderful talk and to the uploader for making this accessible. Solidarity.

    Very interesting, brilliant thought leader.
I’m as shocked to hear the examples of racism as I am saddened by the sense that the black community feels so external in the UK.
There’s a real them and us attitude here, an obsession on both sides to focus on differences.
We’re clearly miles away from the same shared experience that I’d imagined we had.

I would love to sit in on one of Akala,s lecturers I mean you could just pick a random day and not look at the theme of the lecture and still be guaranteed to come out much smarter with a deep and informed knowledge of the history of Slavery or the civil rights struggles in the mid sixties, or even the history of Pan African schools and the benefits a well educated population bring to social structures with in our multicultural and three tired class system and a if your really lucky maybe another lyrical flow. The fact is the man is a great role model When sixteen year old,s are listening to Akala and educating themselves the battle is half won.
