I was stationed onboard the USS NASSAU LHA 4. I was a Mess Management Specialist (MS). I was one of the cooks, cooking for the crew and the Marine detachment. We also bake bread and rolls and cakes, make all types of salads, and make ice cream. Everybody ate well and we fed anybody that came onboard.
USS America (LHA-6) is comparable in size to the post-WWII rebuilds of the USS Essex (CV-9), a fleet aircraft carrier, and her several sister ships that were upgraded to the new angled flight deck configuration. The point is that these "amphibious assault ships" such as USS America have nearly as much aviation capacity as the U.S. Navy's former frontline aircraft carriers -- and the Navy currently has nine of these amphibious assault ships in active service, potentially providing a significant expansion of its aviation capacity, if needed, to supplement its current frontline fleet of 11 nuclear-powered super carriers. China has commissioned three aircraft carriers, but its navy is still going through significant operational growing pains as it learns how to use them. No other navy in the world has more than two frontline aircraft carriers in service.
No we don't have 9 Flat tops in service!! Out of the 8 wasp class the Bonnie Dick burned to the point of no return in port! So that leaves us with 2 America class . The wasp class is over 30 years old now and they're time is served faster than we can build new ones in the future. One just now allocated by the SECNAV. It takes 4-5 yrs to build one! As I mentioned in my post they're a little small in length and to fix that the new design will have a smaller island with no garage or weapons platform which is a mistake!!
I've been on many Wasp class LHA's -D which the America class mirrors in profile dimensions! This Is where it stops! The America class is not long enough to sustain it's missions in my opinion! Especially with the F-35B ! This class is now built in 2 versions as it will have a smaller well deck as a compromise! This is where it should of been made to at least 875' or even 900'!! If course the propulsion system would have to be improved to handle the extra weight maybe but still the same if it had LCats aboard and stuff
Only LHA6/7 (USS America and USS Tripoli) have extended aircraft hangars in this class as purely aviation optimized ships. The rest have amphibious well-decks from LHA8 (USS Bougainville) and onwards.
didnt like the robot voice - the question of the video, the goal in life is to learn from your mistakes. So one can do better next time. Welcome to the US Navy. every bolt has a job to do. this ship is not different. It has a job to do, and it carries it out!.
Unfortunately, this is our only one of its kind the rest are going to be built with well decks me personally I think we need more of the small light carriers
Veo un problema. Y es que no tiene capacidad para transporte de armamento pesado, como carros de combate o transporte de personal. Eso no lo pueden hacer los Osprey ni los helicópteros.
The U.S. Navy needs a minimum of six (6) America Class "Lightning Carriers". These vessels are needed in the aircraft carrier rotation for less stressful areas where a full Carrier Strike Group capability with a full Carrier Air Wing is not needed. The unique and very capable F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter is what makes this possible. A minimum of twelve (12) F-35Bs should be on board for all deployments and more can be accomodated as required. The U.S. Navy should stand-up F-35B Squadrons and mix of Navy and USMC aircrew are used as mission requirements dictate. Presence is their primary mission, and providing Strike/Fighter support with F-35B unique qualities/capabilities make this possible. Rotary wing operations can support ASW and Sea Control missions as well. One DDG-51 and the new FFG-62s will be its battle group with a logistics ship to accompany.
I say 10!! 5 on each coast!! If the ship's were built to at least 875' instead of 844 ' you can fit 30 F-35's !! The Essex class started at 873' in it's short hull , the long hulls started at 888' and extended to 900 eventually. We need long hull LHA's !!
@@enricomandragona163 honestly it's still an amphibious assault ship it carries more marines than Navy personnel, so they can deploy Marines via helicopter and besides the different choppers they only have one type of plane F 35 which is an upgrade from the AV 8 Harrier I spent plenty of time on aircraft carriers and on an LHA
@@PaulJohnson-lv6ttnot in agreement!! There's nothing amphibious about an air assault with helos except flying over water and doing a shore drop like seals do!!
While the 3.4 billion dollar price tag is light years better than the 13 billion for a Gerald R Ford class, I now wonder whether we should spend a nickle on these anymore. The war in Ukraine has brought sharp focus to the fact that billion dollar ships can be sunk by swarms of sea drones for 50 or 60 thousand. The flagship of the Russian fleet is now projecting Russian superiority to a bunch of crabs on the floor of the Baltic. It's time to re-evaluate....
As a recently retired RCAF F18 pilot/instructor I had the privilege of landing on this beast in its inaugural year of 2014 while on joint exercise. She may be the smallest, but to me she was easy to land on and was state of the art. Even a 4 inch penis is a formidable weapon when wielded by the right man and this ship is no exception. The USA has the biggest and best fleet in the world. #LoveThisBoat

I was on the USS Nassau 91-94
Without you cook's our ship's crew's make for a happy ship that's well fed
A nice little video what happened to the ship that was set on fire?
My uncle piloted the F4 phantom in Vietnam, I was in awe as a 1960's kid. God bless all who served this great country.🇺🇸
In 86, I was on the USS BELLEAU WOOD LHA 3. Was a great ship for a Marine to have his first float on.
It's awesome to hear from someone who shared that experience! The USS BELLEAU WOOD must have held some incredible memories for you.
Add to the weaponry, Cobra attack helicopters. Fast response for both attack and defense. A lethal combination of capabilities.

I was A proud member of the crew from 1972 until 1975 , worked in the aft cats 3&4. I was sad to see her go the way she did.
Oh stop she served her purpose plus the navy studied it's sinking for future reference
Build more practical deterrent... Submarine, smaller aircraft carriers, missiles and laser technology

Incorrect the Tripoli is a compromise with a small well deck and smaller island
I think that they should make more LHD instead of LHA should replace the LHA with LCV.
It's not the best or most complete, but it gets the job done.
Does the job assigned to it,nice ship
As there no V-22 AEW aircraft, USN or USMC should consider getting Merlin Crownest helicopters
It houses a few of America's deadliest payload
How about the
USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) lost in port.
Unfortunately can't be saved
these and the LHD'S replaced the tarawa LHA'S to accommodate THE LCACs

What?
There " was" an actual USS America aircraft carrier. But it now part of a series of the deepest ship wrecks! :(

Incorrect. Tripoli has no well deck either. Bougainville onward will.
It was supposed to be one for every other to be a hybrid or aviation sentric version. How's the new one just allocated going to be?

20 knots? Essex class could do 33 knots and about the same size maybe the navy should go back to oil fire boilers lol
Agreed!! Well the wasps are boiler turbine powered except LHA7
Maybe the navy should build a conventional carrier or two to supplement the Ford Class. They can be built in half the time and refits won't be 6 years

Yes however not full size well decks
