    The nice thing about Holst is that when he wrote for orchestra, he couldn't help but also kind of write for band too.

      I just learned that today. As I listened, I was surprised by how well this piece fit this band's sound.
      It competes well with full orchestra performances.

      He wrote two suites for wind band and 'A Moorside Suite' for Brass Band which he later transcribed for both wind band and orchestra. Gustav Holst was one of Britain's finest composers and it fills me with joy that his works are appreciated the world over

Please, however, notify your videographers that they could occasionally show the horns when they are featured in the score, for example at 1:40 (when the Major quickly goes back to conducting the low brass) or at 2:11 when a little figure in the cornet gets all the attention. → A former Navy bandsman, just sayin'.

    3:07 Lyrics:
    I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
    Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
    The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
    That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
    The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
    The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
    And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
    Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
    We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
    Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
    And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
    And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

      It is the US Marine Band. Transcriptions of orchestral music for concert band have been a staple of band repertoire since the late 19th century. In the days before radio and phonographs, most Americans first heard the great works of Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner from traveling concert bands, as they didn’t live near enough to a city to hear an orchestra.

    hi. I have recently played this piece in a concert with the Auburn university youth orchestra this month. I am trying to come up with a theme for our spring semester. have any suggestions? My next question goes out to the flute section. What should I do about the middle joint of my colored beginner's flute having a slight bend in it? I have already asked the band director at my school. He suggested that I let our school system's band representative take a look. I decided to ask around from other fellow musicians on youtube as well before I do anything to my flute and make any mistakes.

    Is it just me or does the principal trumpet have meh phrasing? Don’t get me wrong, he’s technically incredible (obviously tired chops), but during lyrical sections, he ends each note with a mini crescendo into and kinda “flicks” into the next note. It’s kinda distracting from the contour of the phrase.

      Ohhhh...that explains it. I should've known it was an english horn. Thanks. The Community Band I play in had an english horn one time. I just can't believe I forgot that it was an english horn. D:

    An amazing performance and arrangement. Just a little disappointed that the double bassoon stayed on its stand in the slow low passage near the end. Ok my main instrument was bass trombone before I took up bassoon and your guy played with a great sound. But I still think the double bassoon would have added to the colour blend here, especially with the lack of low strings in a band. Loved it though, as I do all your performances.

      Kenneth Tan they probably have an in house arranger for transcriptions like this one. I would root through JW pepper if they were to have got it elsewhere. That’s your best bet.

      This is considered a transcription, not an arrangement. It's by Merlin Patterson. You can purchase it from his website. Jupiter is $225 and the whole suite is $850. www.merlinpatterson.com/content/view/12/26/

      It is a bass oboe. Holst called for a very large orchestra, and also used many unusual instruments.

      I know, right? Nearly every recording I've heard has this same issue. Must be conductors' preference...
      Also, the wind instruments in this band might not be able to sustain a note as long as the stringed instruments in a full orchestra, so they could be playing it faster to compensate...
