- 10-1 Giants meet the 10-1 49ers in a MNF Classic. SF 7, NYG 3. Phil Simms and Ronnie Lott get heated at the end of the game. Great preview of the eventual NFC Championship Game a few weeks later.
I remember watching this game as a kid. Stayed up late one a school night and all. Man… I miss great football like this.

Yes it was. Everyone wanted to get gone to watch MNF. Then after the game, we would turn on ESPN and watch NFL films until we would fall asleep.
I remember it well. One of the most anticipated MNF games ever (along with Chicago-Miami in 85), and it did not disappoint. A lot of post game headaches for sure.

Only on the defense, though. The offense can run into any head they want. NFL apparently want us to believe that only offensive players can sustain concussions.

@@DanielSong39 It's insane, right? There were two plays in the Jacksonville/New England AFC title game where the offensive player caused all of the damage and the defense got blamed.

Perhaps the greatest defensive struggle in MNF history.

In 1990 though neither one of these teams was actually the best team in the NFL that year the Buffalo bills were the best team in football in 1990 but they blew it in the super bowl but they were definitely the best team in the NFL
@@BruceWayne-ri4wr No they weren't. The Bills lost to a Giants team which had been badly beaten up for the last third or so of the regular season. Had the Giants been healthy, they would have eaten the Bills for lunch. Had the 49ers gone to the Super Bowl, they too would crushed the Bills.
Not sure the giants controlled the clock and barely won on a missed kick. When the bills offense had the ball they scored a point a a minute. Was a bill belichek offensive game plan masterpiece for the giants and some good luck too

This game and of course the NFC title game was the culmination of an intense decade-long rivalry.

The two 1990 games weren’t only incredible because the quality of play is superior in its own right. The intensity and increasing stakes of the 80s games impossibly added to the expectation and passion of these two games. I hated the 49ers but respected the hell out of them.
I loved the contrasting offensive philosophies yet hard hitting, suffocating defenses.
The 1990 NFC title game was the high point of the rivalry as the Giants began to fade with the resignation of Parcells.
Respect to these two great teams and this era for both organizations.

The Giants didn't fade with the resignation of Parcells. They faded out of contention due to George Young's poor decision to let Belichick walk and instead hire Ray Handley. The fact that Young couldn't get a handle on unfettered free agency didn't help his case either.

The Giants were the only team that could give the 49ers fits back then... The context of exactly how good SF was - a lot of people forget they were on a run that was incredible! Giants stopped them (thanks to a hit on R Craig with fumble) from a three peat. A fantastic rivalry! I loved that 1990 team, especially the defense!
I'm a 49ers fan and although the Bears were more celebrated, outside of 1985 we pretty much smacked the Bears virtually every time we played them in the 80s. The Giants were the team I respected the most and feared. It really was a great clash of philosophies.

I was 22 back then when I watched this game, and I looked so forward to this matchup on that Monday night .Although my team lost, it was a great defensive game and a preview of what was to come later in the postseason

This just some good old fashion HARD HITTING ASS DEFENSE AND I MISS IT SO MUCH! Watching today's NFL gives me a much greater respect for great defense. Sims & Montana had no chance in hell of competing half their passes vs these defenses. thats how great both defenses were. Also those 49ers and giants defenses of the 80's r some of the most underrated defenses ever!
I am not a fan of either team, but this game along with the championship game that followed a month later were both superbly entertaining and hard fought. I was 9 years old at the time and just getting into football. I remember the day this game was played (December 3rd, 1990) there was also a large earthquake that was predicted for the San Francisco region. Created even more intensity for the game...

I loved watching ABC Monday night football in the late 80s early 90s. I remember sneaking downstairs to watch the second half because it was passed my bedtime. My dad had an awning cleaning business in the late 80s and a few of his employees were staying with us temporarily. These guys would always cover for me so i could watch the games with them. Long time ago

Absolutely. If an ordinary NFL team scores that many points (50+) in any given game, chances are 99.9% that the same team is assured of an easy win! But for a team to put up that many points on the scoreboard and ends up LOSING the game tells me there's something wrong here. Where's the defense I say? This classic no holds barred Monday night brawl between the Niners and the Giants from 1990 will forever stand out as a game for the ages. The stadium fans at Candlestick Park certainly got their money's worth.

The 49er defenses of the 1980s never get enough credit. But then they didn't often need to hold the opposition to less than seven points. Great, great game!

In the 1989 and 1990 seasons, the 49ers lost a total of 5 games. Strangely enough, they were all at home.
The Niners had three seasons during the Montana era where they were undefeated on the road, none where they were undefeated at home.
Yeah two 10-1 Powerhouses going head to head. Gotta love that. As I've said I am a Diehard Packers fan, BUT I also LOVE FOOTBALL. This will be one of my Thanksgiving binge games....if I can wait...lol.

Sims was content on stepping to Ronnie Lott. Great rivalry for the late 80's early 90's. Real football in real time and emotion.

Matt Bahr, who scored the only points for the Giants in this game, played soccer for the Colorado Caribous of the old NASL. He also won Super Bowls with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Giants.
What a crew calling that game. Thought they would always be same. Every Monday night in the fall...homework or MNF...usually both at the same time.
These were 2 great teams. Montana to Rice....nuff said. Roger Craig had some epic games. Phil Simms was a damn good QB, and of course L.Taylor. You had one of the BEST QB's ever, probably the BEST WR ever in Rice, and one of the best LB's to play as well. MNF, aaah the memories. The sounds, the music, the fun. I used to love the Halftime highlights. Back in the 70's we didn't have any options other than the network games on Sunday afternoon, and MNF. So I didn't get to see the Seahawks much, or the Buccaneers in their first season. Unless they played Green Bay. So the highlights showed what I didn't get to see. Again FUN!!
I think you got your 'best evers' a bit screwy. Montana/Rice-best combination ever, individually probably the best in their spot. Here's my beef- LT,hands down and don't put them back up, is absolutely the greatest LB, in or out, to ever play. How can you question this?
Ask any defensive MVP since LT and they will all tell you he was the best ever. They would know.

It's the year 2021 and I in today's society you everything's technology-enhanced like watching football games on HD or Ultra HD and there's a lot of technology in the game when it comes to watching sports in general.. but I remember watching football and early 90s because the 49ers were my favorite team and looking at back at I sure do really miss it... I miss the opening theme to Monday Night Football and the the atmosphere of it.. I really can't explain it but back then we didn't have cell phones or tablets.. we had to listen on the radio or watch the game when they came and if you want to record it because you were working or something else to do you recorded on your VCR.. back then I think we appreciate the game because nowadays we take football for granted like many other things.. I do believe in technology but only in the medical field and the military because it could save lives but when it comes to our socialize lives.. they shouldn't be no technology at all... everybody today has a cell phone and we can text which makes so much easier for back in the day if you wanted to talk somebody especially if you like somebody that it take text to call that person on the landline. And wherever you wanted to ask somebody to dance like in the dancing event we didn't have our cell phones or texts we had a girl balls and ask the ladies... I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that both teams were unbeaten in the weeks leading up to this big game, and that was EVERYONE'S dream- that they would meet as two unbeaten 11-0 teams. But of course, both teams lost a game a week or two before this big showdown. Anyone else remember this?
Yes. Each team was 10-0 and then lost their first game the week before- Giants to Philly, SF to the Rams.

I'm a Giants fan. But you have to give best franchise to Patriots. Thats one of the good thing about sports its not opinion - they have the most championships - so they are most successful. But I'd rather watch the 49ers play with Montana/Rice.

You can see in this game how key Hostetler's mobility would be in the rematch - Simms was an excellent QB but the 49ers' defense had him dead to rights all game. Hostetler added that one little wrinkle that they would have to pay attention to instead of pinning their ears back for a QB who couldn't run. Giants had 100 more yards of offense the second time around.
The greatest quarterback of all time with the greatest receiver of all time and the greatest safety of all time vs. the greatest defensive player of all time and the greatest coaching staff of all time. That is a recipe for classic football.
This game does not end here. It ends in the championship game, capping a great rivalry.

The parallels between the 1990 49ers & Giants & the 2011 49ers & Giants are crazy.
In both years NY played a regular season game in SF. In both years SF won those games by 1 score in mighty struggles.
In both years NY would return to SF in the NFCCG. In both years NY would win those games by last second field goal after fluke SF fumbles. & in both years NY would go on to win the Superbowl.
Well stated. As a Giants fan, I have to say that even more than the SB games, my favorite NYG games were those 2 against SF and a close 3rd place would be the one against GB at Lambeau in Jan 2008 (I think). The one in the bitter cold.

As a Giants fan.. I just moved to the bay area and was watching this with a buddy who is a 49er fan and we were battling. Great memory.
This was the best rivalry in football, even though they were in different divisions. Their games were always slugfests.

@@notyourpuppet5975 The Marshall never gave up on that play and got off of his knees not once but twice then Taylor was the unsung hero who stopped Montana's roll and allowed Marshall to use his speed (excellent for such a big guy) to close the distance.
But having said that, Young filled in well for Montana and they were driving methodically down the field near the end. Then Taylor got excellent penetration in order to be Johnny-on-the-spot after Howard's big coconut knocked the ball out of Craig's hands.

Only because of a mistake did they win...no fumble...no win....but it happened...they won and squeaked by the BILLS....that’s how the NFL was back then. Tough teams overcoming injuries...small mistakes deciding games.....the NFL was tough and gritty in those days.
And as a 49er fan I can say that the loss in 1990 hurt more than both super bowl loses. Respect to the 1990 New York Giants. They were the better team.

If roger Craig didn't fumble the ball, the 49ers would 3peat champs in the NFC Championship Game all Rodger Craig needed to do was just hold on to the ball and we have won the game Steve Young would have started in the Super Bowl because Joe Montana was knocked out in that game but I believe that we would have won against the bills and I think it would have been the best thing happened for Scott Norwood who missed the field goal kick against the Giants in the Super Bowl because he would never been in that position I think the 49ers would have crushed them

That has to be the worst case of a cooked game I ever saw.
Taylor was lined up in the neutral zone almost every play, every time the 9ers started to build momentum, the officials would throw a flag, and have a lengthy discussion, only to pick up the flag and say no foul on the play, and worst of all the helmet to helmet hit on Montana from behind.

Long time Forty Niner Faithful can point to bad calls, and no calls by crooked, or incompetent officiating costing the Niner's wins.
In my recollection, three games in '83, (eliminating home field) including the NFC championship game at RFK, which was described as "Dubious" in Sports Illustrated the next week, and the pass interference called on Eric Wright in the '84 regular season game against Pittsburgh which cost them a chance to be next team to have a perfect season, the withholding of presenting the Forty Niners the new trophy for the conference champions in '84, until the next year when the league could give it to the Bears, and then a few more slights and some bad officiating during the next few seasons had many of us convinced that the league had it out for the team.
Maybe because of Eddie D. and his alleged mob ties. (Who knows?!!!)
Example: the frequent and we'll publicised accusations of leg whipping by many of the opposing teams against the McKittrick coached O-Line.
I had watched close to 120+ Forty Niner games during the 80s and 90s, and I can't remember seeing any leg whipping.
I don't remember the refs calling any leg whipping fouls, which, I suppose would be called tripping.

I can speculate that the league (the owners) probably weren't happy with the Giants intentionally maiming the league's "cash cows" on opposing teams.
I heard a veteran lineman from the previous era, the 70's, say in a interview that he personally refrained from intentionally injuring QBs because it would hurt the game more than anything else. Wise words...
That might be the reason that the defensive star filled Bears and Giants of the 80's-90's were only allowed to win 3 championships in 22 seasons (1980-1999)

This loss taught Bill Parcels to kick the damn field goal when you have the opportunity. They beat the 49ers 15-13 in the NFC championship game about 5 or 6 weeks later.

To me CBS was MLB baseball and NFC football. NBC was AFC football and the NBA. And MNF was ABC.
I hope in the near future, CBS gets back the NFC package ASAP, NBC gets back the AFC package, Fox gets Sunday Night Football, and ESPN/ABC keeps Monday Night Football.

This game between 10-1 teams totaled 10 total points.
18 years later, two 9-1 teams would play again on Monday Night Football and score a few more points...105 points, to be exact.

I had been a Giants fan since '68.
Never been to an NFL game in my life.
Was living near San Francisco at the time, working as a bus driver, and was assigned to drive a load of people to this game.
After all the people had gone inside, I thought, I really have to get inside somehow.
So I went over to the stadium, it was the 2nd or 3rd quarter, and started asking gate keepers if I could go in, until like the 3rd guy said, yeah, okay, go on in.
I was a little disappointed, though.
After decades of watching games on TV, the actual at the stadium experience was kind of a letdown.
The players looked so small and far away.
The Giants lost this one, but came back to Candlestick for the NFC Championship game later that year.

This game exemplifies why i was glad Hoss was there instead of Simms phils lack of mobility was always a problem against great defenses. That why he always sucked vs the eagles and there is no way the G-Men beat the niners or the bills to win the championship that year if simms didn't get hurt

Whoa it's a future MNF analysis.
Unlike Dan Campbell, Parcels learned from this game. He passed up the FGs and instead of winning 9-7 they lost 7-3. He did NOT make that mistake in January and the Giants went to the SB 15-13.
the giants avenged all 3 of their losses in 1990, to Philly, SanFran, and Buffalo. All 3 teams outscored the Giants for the season. It was meant to be.
They didn't avenge the Philly loss. They beat Philly in Week 1 but lost to them in Week 12. They never played them again that season.
Big game. Preview to NFC Championship. Unfortunately, though they would win this regular season game, the 49ers would lose 3 straight playoff games to the Giants between 1986 and 1991, with Montana being knocked out in two of those games.
Ending with the "fixed" NFC championship loss, the Forty Niner's had beat the giants in THREE consecutive games; '88 and '89, classic Montana comebacks, and then this one.
"Giants won three consecutive playoff games against the 49ers" but then didn't win three consecutive NFC titles, nor Super Bowls.
Only winning the one in the '80s and the one in '90s, TWO total in the entire taylor era, TWO in close to 15 years.

Hey man I'm just stating a fact. We went through you three times before ultimately winning the Superbowl. No? We beat you in 86 divisional round I believe it was 40 something to 3. Beat you guys in 90 at candlestick in NFC championship with a backup QB. Nothing questionable I'm my humble opinion. We won fair and square. Then in 2011 we beat niners in candlestick, in the NFC championship... again. As for our home being in Jersey it never mattered to me. Is it supposed to or something?
You guys have had your big wins vs us too. To say 90 game was fixed is ridiculous. You get some calls and you don't get some calls. 2002 playoff game, refs missed some calls, big one at the end, but you guys won and I don't try and take that away from the niners. They won. Maybe shockey should have caught a wide open td so we wouldn't need the pass interference on the botched snap at the end. You won we lost.

I did not watch this game (I was not even 5 at the time) but I heard about it through friends and have watched this more than a few times. Makes me appreciate defense even more now because it is pretty much outlawed now; this game proves ONE fact: defense wins championships. Plus, Frank/Al/Dan on ABC and THAT intro (although the one in 1994 was awesome)......come on, doesn't get any better.
The Giants had one of the best defenses in the NFL for almost the entirety of his career and Phil Simms was a bonehead for a lot of it
Simms was a good QB, and the Giants were fortunate to have him.

This San Fran had absolutely no running game this year,it was constant struggle. Saying that,were 2:30 minutes away from a 3rd SB appearance in a row if Roger Craig doesn't cough it up in NFC Championship game. Never easy to make 3 straight SB appearances,San Fran in 90 was on borrowed time.

This was a really big game. Unfortunately for me, I was flying out of the country on vacation as the game was being played and didn't know the results for 2-weeks. Did I miss a great 7-3 score game? Mmmmmm, I don't know.
Yep u missed a classic 7-3 game. I'm a lifelong Gmen fan since this yr(1990) and everyone was pumped for this game and talking about it for a few days afterwords. Back In these days , you didn't need to have 43-41 games for them to be classic.
I remember thinking that these teams would meet again in the NFC championship game and the winner would win the super bowl. As a fan I Really enjoyed watching these teams go against each other. This game and the NFC championship game was more exciting than the super bowl.
Man, these teams didn’t like each other. And there were other great teams through the 80s that were right there too, most notably Washington and the Bears. What a tough conference! All Super Bowl champions and all tough as hell. What a time for football.

That Giants defense really had the niners offense figured out that year. And the Niners defense didn't allow the Giants into the end zone in both games that season.

I don't know how you're supposed to avoid contact if you're in Lott's position. You're running at full speed and have less than half a second to stop or change directions.
Knowing what happens in the NFC Championship game and how with one hit the Giants ended possibly the greatest era in pro football up until that time. (I acknowledge the Patriots as having possibly the greatest continuous period of success in NFL history simply due to having to deal with the salary cap, which is something that, for the most part, the Steelers, Packers, and 49ers did not have to deal with in their hey day)
So, if you call the intentional maiming of Montana "The end of Camelot" then I will call the 44-3 pummeling that simms, taylor and the giants got in simms and taylor's last game at old Candlestick in January'94;

The Lott vs simms story, burt claims he was the one who instigated it by telling Lott lies about what simms said about him. That could be true or not true, but I heard over the air that simms said " if there's one team that I don't like, it's the Forty Niners"
