Famous Grouse was my first ever whisky, because my hometown has a special relationship with it. My home town is home to the 333rd Air Wing of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, and were founded in Scotland during WW2. And during that period, one of the soldiers went AWOL to visit his -ahem-, local piece of crumpet so to speak.
To get back to the base before his absence was noticed, he stole a local truck. He was, of course, discovered by his superior, but as the back of the truck was full of Famous Grouse, all he got was a slap on the wrist. Ever since, Famous Grouse has been the official whisky of the 333rd RNAF Air Wing.

Famous Grouse, and Jameson's, too, both felt to me like they were "engineered" specifically for people who are planning to do a LOt of drinking. Like maybe you and a couple of buddies could sit around a fire pit and polish off a whole bottle of it in one evening.

So happy to finally see ye review Famous Grouse. It's my dad's favourite whiskey and there's always been a bottle in our house for as long as I can remember. Of course he mostly uses it for hot whiskeys, Irish coffees and Irish teas around Christmas when the extend family members drop by to catch up. So for me Grouse makes me think of Christmas.
Funnily enough I grabbed him a little 3 bottle taster set of other Grouses when I was in Edinburgh at one point and he's never tried them! He just likes seeing the line up of little Winter Grouse, Black Grouse and Naked Grouse bottles every time he goes to the cabinet. :D

I think the first whiskey where I genuinely started to notice the flavors was Jameson, I believe. Jameson Black Barrel. I tried Jack Daniels, I tried 1792, I tried Jefferson's Reserve, and all nothing but lots of alcohol, lots of burning, and then all of a sudden Jameson Black Barrel just gave me a kick of honeyed sweetness and cinnamon spice. It's been about a year and a half since then and I really want to go back after trying a bunch of different Bourbon's, Scotches, other Irish whiskey's, and see how much that Black Barrel has opened up.

Thursday July 11, 2019 - Watched the video from my hotel in Edinburgh Scotland after studying all day at the Edinburgh Whisky Academy (They told me to tell Daniel "Hello"). I wish I had brought a Texas Whisky with me to share. I might take another class on sensory analysis next year with a master blender at the school so I'll bring a few bottles then. On the training of the palate with unfamiliar flavors issue... recently I read "Bergamot" as a descriptor. I didn't know what it was, Googled it and discovered it is a citrus used in making Earl Grey Tea. It is highly unlikely that I'll ever find any Bergamot at a local store so I bought some Earl Grey. It definitely has a unique citrus note but with added earthy leafy tea notes.

i decided not long ago to pick up a bottle of the famous grouse; but i got the "peated" version. allong with the notes you guys said there's a wisp of smoke trolling through. Now i have a problem; i actually prefer Teachers whisky over the grouse because the smoke in that is far more involved and the flavors are much more defined. the price points on both are somewhat close to one another so its a no brainier for me. Have you guys reviewed Teachers yet? if not when will you?

I wonder how a blended whisky like this one would have changed over the decades as the whiskeys used to make the blend also change or maybe a portion of the mix becomes unavailable and replaced with something else. I really like grouse as a daily, I wonder if itll still be the same taste in say 25 years.

I wasn't going to write this lil' story, but then Rex said, he too, had a grouse story.
It's not much of a story, but it struck me as weird, maybe I was on the flip-side finally, but some guy that looked exactly like older Peewee herman with glasses and his wife came into the megabev and he was DESPERATE for famous grouse and finally ran up next to me and cried in joy and was telling one of the employees of all of the amazing wonderment that was Famous Grouse and how rare it is and how he was so happy they just so happened to have a supply and picked up two whole bottles of it.
=When he left, I went up to the employee who was also eyeballing me after that spectacle as if he needed someone to talk to and we both said at the same time "Isn't Famous Grouse at every liquor store in town?" Like, even party stores and gas stations carry it. But, I'm suspecting the guy was from out of state and maybe it's not legal in his state?

I was at one of the nicer liquor stores near me recently, and they're doing something I thought was kinda cool. They bought a barrel of whisky from a Speyside distillery (I think either Tormore or Tomintoul) and have started selling small bottles of it proofed down to 54% using vermouth and bitters and selling it as a "cocktail". Basically a cask-strength Manhattan. The woman I spoke to there said it was because they couldn't legally sell it as Scotch for a reason I can't remember, so they decided to do something different with it.

As we worked through nosing and tasting, there were plenty of OMG! and Aha! moments.
Toward the end, one of the guys said, "I didn't know whisky could taste like so many different things! I thought whisky was just whisky. I didn't know there was so much difference or so many flavours."

Dear Master Daniel and Shaggy Rex,
I tried to paste a picture of Master Po and Shaggy to no avail. I sent Daniel the full email with pics to his whiskymarketing.org email address.
I envision Master Daniel asking Shaggy Rex “Grasshopper, can you snatch the pebble from my hand?”
Shaggy then saying “hell yes! What’s that behind you?” While Master Po falls for this distraction, Shaggy slaps Master Po’s hand with an underhanded stroke so the pebble goes flying in the air and Shaggy catches it!
Shaggy then turns to Master Po and says “Yo B*tch, give me McCallan M!”.
Also just sharing some random comments about prior episodes.
    • On the coffee episode where Rex tasted some aftertaste with the Aeropress, have you tried pouring hot water through the paper filter beforehand to get rid of the taste from the filter? I too, enjoy Aeropress and have found that to be helpful.
    • While trying to locate Balcones Texas Blue Corn in Northern California, I read this in yesterday’s newletter that there will be a whisky event in Northern California.
I think you should consider a remote episode from this event! James Goad from Balcones will be there, as I have pestered him further about Texas Blue Corn being available in California this fall. You can also visit Nancy Fraley in Berkeley!
See, I pay attention to these items.

I prefer the red to the grouse..... the varnish flavor kills it for me. Even though the red label is sharper and has more grain alcohol taste

Liked MacAllan 10. Did not like Grouse... Artificially sweet and thin. Really wanna try laphroaig

Finally! A scotch whisky again. With the amount of donations this channel has gotten, you almost would think it was called the Bourbon Vault instead of the Whiskey Vault.

Grouse is a decent budget scotch. I’ve had several bottles. Just NEVER drink it with or after Chinese food!

Love the channel. I love whiskey, but the flavor profile and smell of Scotch is either baby vomit or burnt transmission fluid. To get a good one is way to costly. American or Irish all the way.

Interestingly enough Famous Grouse is the Scotch that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth drinks this daily and it's standard in the Palace and all of her houses. Prince Charles also drinks this, but expands beyond just this.

I've tried Famous Grouse a few times. I always get a soapy after taste which instantly puts me off of it.
