    Did not have time to get into the Majin Tensei
    games. SMT is time consuming enough, so it would've brought the channel to a total stand-still, and I'm not letting that happen.

      The SMT1 link is to the original patch by AeonGenesis, not Orden's later bugfixed version.

      I can not recommend enough that you find someone to work with to help speed up content creation and then branch into other systems.
      Your vids are consistently solid and rarely too long, too short or long-winded. You're a diamond in the rough and with the lack of any good ps1, n64 or ps2 reviewers there is money laying there waiting for you to take it.

    • @Paraboxify
      @Paraboxify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great video, I understand the time constraints and Majin Tensei is perhaps a bit beyond the scope of this video, maybe good if you ever cover FE x MegaTen. You could've given an honorable mention to Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei, a remake compilation of MegaTen 1 and 2 for Famicom with additional content, which plays pretty much like any of the SFC SMTs, and also has an English patch, though again that would've required time investment. Could be nice as a standalone vid at some point or if you ever revisit the franchise.
      These games can be Atlus hard, though, and without a manual to tell you how demon recruitment, fusion, types work, as well as what spells do what, you'll be floundering in the dark for a while. I've also never gotten SMT1 to work on an accurate emulator or my sd2snes, even with the Orden patch it just always gets stuck on the zombie fight, so I've never been able to really sink my teeth into this franchise.

    Here's a fun fact: The in-game cursor not only displays your position, but also alignment. If it's spinning clockwise, then you're aligned with Law; if it's rotating counter-clockwise, then you're Chaos-bound; if it's barely rocking back and forth, then you're siding with Neutrality. I'm addition to this, how quickly it's spinning determines how deep you're in with that faction.
    I'm not surprised that it wasn't mentioned in the video, as it doesn't seem to be something that most people know, and doesn't seem to be well-documented.

    This game series has been my favorite since 2011. It has brought a lot of interesting concepts and mechanics for JRPGs. Some of my favorite aspects are:
    - Amazing art and character/monster desing
    - Dark, mysterious and kinda controvertial themes
    - Great OST
    - Monster collecting
    - Story divided into different routes and endings
    - Very fun gameplay (press turn system introduced in SMT Nocturne)

    Always wanted to get in on the SMT series. I love the aesthetic and stories with religious themes. The gameplay is a tough sell though, with those large maps, frequent random encounters, and choice heavy scenarios. Seems like an excellent series to go through with either a guide or an abundance of time.

    • @seth7726
      @seth7726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The games are pretty short compared to other JRPGs. The snes ones can be beaten in 10-15 hours. If you are well informed you can autobattle all random encounters and even bosses. The only tough part would be not getting lost since you have to talk to specific NPCs sometimes in order to know the next objective.

      Highly recommend looking into "What you need to know" articles and forums for SMT. That's what I've done for Nocturne (my first SMT) and it has really made me more comfortable and at ease when playing, much less intimidating for sure.
      You'll still need to backtrack and do some grinding, but don't ignore walkthrough videos to help you through it. It's a fun series, but you gotta put in some time and work for it.
      SMT 4 is a good entry point into the series, though the tutorial is difficult, but push through that and you should be fine. :)

    • @badwrongfun5541
      @badwrongfun5541 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a DS or 3DS I would recomend the Devil Survivor spin off (1 and the enhanced port Over clocked, not 2) as a good entry point into the franchise. It's a strategy rpg but it's own take on same kind of scenario and story as the first game and Nocturne with the same emphasis on choice through multiple routes. You might still need a guide I think the SRPG format and it being a little more forgiving makes it a bit more accessible.

    As a long time Smt fan and a fan of your channel, I would like to state that the one major gripe I had about early SMT games was the first person dungeon areas and that felt like a maze everytime.Going in is not easy as going out or finding the area you need to be, I had to look for maps on the net to find out where I was. After Thorman does his thing and you end up in the blue dungeon of trial it really gets annoying. The only thing that got me going further was the story which didn't dissapoint at all. SMT 2 gets better with dungeons but its still a maze to get out. SMT IF on the other hand has some really annoying dungeons but much more polished as you said. And the demon fusion in the early SMT games are bad , the best of the three being IF . It really got better with Nocturne which is one of my favourite games . These games are still groundbreaking for the story and beautiful sprite work and the amount choice they left up to the player , they really made some unique at the time. Its just the execution of movement and exploring was really limited and frustrating for me. A game that does this formula really well is SMT Strange Journey , some of the dungeons are really annoying but the map system and the amount of items to collect,quests and the new equipment you get to explore more keeps it fresh. I just hope we can see any new footage of SMT V soon. Atlus is seriously a great company with the tons of content they put in their games. I used to think Nintendo was awseome for putting content in they're Pokemon games with each generation. But Atlus goes ALL in and does much much more. Come to think of it SMT is like Pokemon for adults :)
    Thank you for reading and have great rest of your day.

    As a note: SMT II is a direct sequel to SMT. Halfway through the game, the world ends and that persists into SMT II, which actually takes place some 20 years after the end of the first game. It's post-apocalyptic because the first game saw the apocalypse.
    For those interested: There's actually a canon ending to both the original games that lead into Nocturne:
    SMT: Neutral ending
    SMT II: True Chaos Ending
    The lead character reincarnates into the journalist, Hijiri-thus why they look exactly alike.
    Nocturne can actually function as the crosspoint of the various SMT spinoffs, due to how its endings work-you are literally deciding the next world's form, after all.

    If you want more SMT goodness but on the go, the 3DS is practically the king of handheld SMT games. Devil Survivor 1 and 2 definitive versions, SMT4, SMT4 Armageddon, Soul Hackers, Strange Journey Redux. The PS2 is the console of choice for SMT, if that's more your thing.
    Still waiting to hear more about SMT5 on the Switch. It's been a long time since we've heard anything.

    I do think SMT is hard for new people, but you don't need to grind as much as you think you do in these games. The game forces you to use new demons, and think about weaknesses and buffs/debuffs as actual value to the combat.
    SMT you cannot brute force, but as you adapt to it and pick up on it, it becomes extremely addicting and fun to make new setups and try new methods of bending the game to your will.

    To be honest, while the second SMT game had improvements in UI and demon fusion, I found SMT1 to be easier just because it had exploits where you could level up extremely quickly early on in the game. The fewer dialogue options when talking to demons made it so that I could easily farm money, magnetite, and items really easily, all you have to do is find a demon that shows up a lot, figure out the 2 dialogue variations, and simply go through the dungeon normally. This is how I actually hit the money and magnetite cap, by learning how to negotiate repeatedly with demons, as the encounters combined with the often long stretches of walking around you do in dungeons leads to plenty of encounters to work with.
    Really, I sunk tons of hours into it, simply because I took my time and because having the game on a phone emulator made it so that I can put in short bursts of playtime anywhere, making the tedium relatively negligible since I was fine with just fighting a few demons and getting xp, money, and demons at a time. Personally I don't think it lends itself to long, consistent play-sessions unlike modern RPGs whose gripping stories keep you playing for hours on end. Sure, you can sit down and just play, but you'll get bored after around 40 minutes of searching around for where to go next. You could call it a problem where you struggle to figure out where to go next, but considering my playstyle, I would just explore and wander into the right place after several scattered hours of play. The only time I really pulled out a guide was to see how other people played through, or to see some dialogue I had accidentally clicked past. The guide I used to do this also taught me the trick where I was able to grind up to around 4 times the level that I should have been, alongside dropping weapons that were extremely strong for the area. This was the only voluntary grinding I had done, the rest being just natural random encounters and bosses (unless you count looking for 2 same race demons to fuse into an element demon as "grinding", despite it not taking much effort to do at all).
    The game that really made me take out a guide is SMT2, as unlike the first one, where you simply need to go to each and every location usually once to progress, SMT2 has some early-game quests that require you to backtrack into areas where the nearest terminal is a sizable walking distance away. And you wouldn't figure out to go to those places because of 1, how difficult it is to reach, and 2, the fact that you can't figure out where to go, because the game has difficulty telling the player where to go. SMT2 added the Fortune Teller mechanic, where for a small fee, a fortune teller will tell you where you need to go. It would be helpful, but the psychic would tell you where to go, but not how to get there. For the sake of brevity, I won't make an example, but for me, no amount of free pockets of playtime would have been able to be enough to figure out how to get where I needed to go, simply because the game misguides me. Fortunately, these issues are limited to the early game, and it gets easier to go where you need to go once you get past these hiccups. Mainly because in SMT1, and to a smaller extent 2 also, the game literally presents a fork in the road, where you can choose to go where you want to go. Once you've fully exhausted one path, you can try out the next. Thats one of the things I really liked about the first game in particular, as to me at least, it was one of the oldest story driven RPGs to do just that.

    Finally this series! I love these games because I'm really into spirituality and esotherism and I think this series stays on an higher level of comprehension compared to other JRPGs, I wanted to start from the very roots buying the original games for SNES that I play on my hacked SNES Mini, I also have Kyuuyaku and the two Majin Tensei but the three core SMTs are the most important and are the basics to play the two major series on the following consoles, Shin Megami Tensei and Persona... My playstyle is also very peculiar, I always follow the Law path and have a party on only Angels demons, also in Persona I grow the Judgment and Justice Arcana links associated with the Angels... Anyway these three games are really playable in English just recently because "if..." just got translated recently but SMT1 received a fix patch recently making it truly playable, the former patch was too buggy...

    If you think SNES Megaten games are grind heavy you haven't seen anything until you play the NES instalments. And admittedly neither have I, but just from what I've seen puts fear into my soul. One particular dungeon in the first game can take 12 hours of grinding possibly more depending on how much you did prior, but the worst part is that this game has enemies that can cast spells that permanently drain you levels! Also it has a Sierra-style permanent failure state if you don't the right thing...and no battery save.

    I met this series thanks to SMT IV for the 3DS (great game) and I really like its style . Recruiting demons, fusions, managing the skills , the combat system , etc. But one thing that really engaged me was the atmosphere, the setting (in the case of SMTIV cyberpunk+postapocalyptic) and all these things about chaos, neutral, Law, demons and humans . These are not your typical "Fantasy" Jrpg games.
    Thanks snes drunk for making this video.

    I would probably have adored these games as a kid if they were translated back then.
    Great video. Like you said, the main reason that makes me absolutely love this franchise is its excellent atmosphere, weird plot & visual imagery. There's just nothing like it. If there's anything I regret of the Persona games spin-off huge success, is the fact that it undeniably made the main franchise less relevant for Atlus, since Megami Tensei is such a tough sell in comparison. I hope these games on the SNES get remade some day for Switch, but in the meantime I'm playing the 3DS ones that are slightly less frustrating. I want to also try the Raidou Kuzunoha series as well as Nocturne, anyone knows how good they are?

  • @trapscancreate5760
    @trapscancreate5760 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Playing through right now. As someone who has restarted due emulation glitches and just procrastinating I can say that grinding isn't a big deal if you don't keep avoiding battles and you passively make demon deals. Use the Game FAQs walkthrough and only grind when you want to fuse a specific demon. Remember that the demons are party members not personas. You need to summon the demons into your party. Also make sure that when patching the ROMs make sure your using a Japanese 1v (headered) then the translation (unheader the ROM) and finally patch a fix called Orden). This will avoid fix a glitch that occurs part way through the first act when saving the Resistance leader. The zombie waves will keep respawning due to a text glitch, probably a broken flag caused by the longer English text compared to the smaller kanji character sets. Also the cauntinuity is hard to explain between each game. Every ending except law has a Canon extension. Most games fallow the neutral ending. If you want to only play the game once keep an eye on your alliegnment through your map curser. If you need to fix your alliegnment use the alliegnment you want to shift to's healer to gradually fix your score. Otherwise there is a quest part way that can be used to fix your allignemnt as well. Lastly for you lore people out there. While SMT is the first real game that matters in the continuity the novels take before the games. The games are a spin off of the second novel and don't take into account the third. If you want to read the novels there is a blogspot and PDF version online as there is no official localization.
    SIMPLE

    Atleast turn based combat creates a semblance of fairness, modern first person rpgs like the last two single player Elder Scrolls games (I love Elder Scrolls) you can enter your inventory at any time(and have to which interrupts the illusion of "real time combat") and so long as you buy/cook enough minor healing potions you're invincible. Funny there's a "weight" system, but apparently it never occurred to the devs there was such a thing as volume. Ive recently come to see alot of rpgs as less role playing and more inventory management, they might as well go full inventory management simulation with spreadsheets and invoices.

    Oh God...!!! I got so burned out with SMT1 on the Super Famicom. If your inventory is too full, you will not receive key items to go further. So better to learn to sort out inventory. So for now, I play SMT IF. At least IF is not so bad... but still #%$^ing hard. But not so bad compare to SMT1... Glad I got SMT1 & 2 half price and IF at book off cheap in Tokyo.
    The PS1 version of those 3 games were a bit expensive for me to get. In fact, after getting those SMT games for the Super Famicom, I straight away got a Super Famicom in Akihabara, Tokyo back in 2017.

    For the curious, translations of _Reincarnation of the Goddess_ and _Warrior of the Demon City_ from the original _Digital Devil Story_ novels (which the Famicom game is loosely based on) were made available by a hardworking blogger:
    ddstranslation.blogspot.com/2006/08/introduction_16.html
    It's kind of campy horror but it kind of reminds me of how Elon Musk once compared AI to "summoning the demon" (th-cam.com/video/Tzb_CSRO-0g/w-d-xo.html).
    Unsupervised learning can be a scary thing.
