Ludacris is famed for his iconic music videos, but as JAY-Z once told him, his outlandish visuals came with a downside.
During an interview on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ All the Smoke podcast, the Atlanta rap legend reflected on his larger-than-life music videos and revealed Hov once said to him that they’re the reason he doesn’t get the credit he deserves as an MC.

Real hip hop heads know he can rhyme. A lot of lyrical rappers don't get the credit they deserve over all in the industry
Lyrically he go in he's like a southern Redman he always had bars

Luda and busta both the same thing!!
Ask TI 😂
True rap fans respected the videos and his lyrical flow. We appreciate all that you do. 🙏🏽
Luda is fun but a lot of his big songs are silly. It’s like his songs hit but they’re also Austin Powers theme Songs lol.
🎯💯‼️
He is completely original. His persona is what made him stand out. And he is a great lyricist. Give him his props. 💯
Busta rhymes too!
I absolutely agree 👍🏾👍🏾
Many people don’t understand our culture. Luda was one of my biggest inspirations
I would like to take the time to say thank Ludacris for being Ludacris
I’ve always thought he had bars missy too swear to god

Luda lyrics just flow naturally. It does not feel forced. Yes the over the top extra makes people overlook him but his talent cannot be denied. His collaborations back in the day when he was on top was legendary. In some of the collaborations his lyrics alone made the song.
I always felt he was nice lyrically and him having Jay-Z & Nas on the “I Do it for Hip-Hop” track solidified that!

Word of Mouf album to me is enough reason to give Luda all the credit as an MC. There's a reason why this album is by far his best. It put Luda's lyrical skills on full display and made him one of the best in the game in the 2000s
That album from the intro welcome to America til welcome to Atlanta just hit different... Classics like: move, growing pains, roll out, area codes, that's just the singles the album was a masterpiece and that was I believe 2002🤔🤔🤔
I remember listening to that intro the first time and just being blown away. The sample was so hard! He killed it!
I agree with everything said. And salute to Luda for knowing who he is and what he brings to hip hop. His visuals were dope af but they wouldntve been ish without his lyrics
Those that know, know, and he's comfortable with that. Good to see there are people that dont let their ego steal away from their contentment

Luda inspired many in his prime. A lot of rappers switched to using punchlines and comedy in their bars because of his success. He deserves his credit for how he left an imprint on hip-hop for that generation.
I’ve been saying that, Luda is a damn good lyricist and shines on every track he’s featured on, but people never wanted to give him respect as an MC because they didn’t take him seriously, and that was because he was always making crazy and outlandish videos and songs. Ludacris is a great lyricist. Super underrated. He deserves his flowers, ppl gonna wait until it’s too late to appreciate Luda. Dude is beyond amazing
Ludacris has been releasing music and starring in movies and television for over 20 years. He has 4 multi platinum albums, 2 platinum and 1 gold. He has 100 movie and television features. Looking back, it’s kind of insane how many popular songs he did or was in. A Luda feature almost always makes the song better.
He adds more character , personality & fun to it. We ain’t gotta hear the same dope , money , business, bars all the time lol
Ludacris visuals make the music come to life.
I still love the joint he did with Nate Dogg “Child Of The Night”, “Growing Pains” feat. D.T.P. and “Virgo” he did with Nas & Doug E Fresh
He didn’t start doing those kind of wild videos until the Chicken -n- Beer and Red Light District albums. Videos he did for songs from Back for the First Time and Word of Mouf were pretty normal videos for the most part. I had a guy from ATL tell me he’s not beloved in ATL because he tries to rap like he’s from NY. I’m like wtf does that even mean
That Stomp verse alone should let people know his pen is crazy.

Luda word play is crazy especially earlier in his career. I always enjoyed Luda and was happy he was on the music scene some of his videos you had to catch on uncut😂

Luda had the braids when he started, cut his hair as he got older and looked a lil older too. Grew his hair back and looks just like his 2003 self again. Wild
Luda just seems so damn chill and down to earth. Dude's real af, he stays true to himself and isn't worried about what some mfkrs think he should be. Flow, bars, visuals, the man can do it all.

Chicken & Beer was my childhood. What a record.
Ludas mixtapes and when he features on people’s songs he spazzes . He so dope he will always be one of my favorites
Being from NY, I have noticed that rappers up north usually appeal only to their region. When southern rap started to pick in Atlanta, all regions were responsive. I wouldn’t say his visuals were the reason, but rather his voice is what made his lyrics more appealing. I mean, if Jay’s light airy voice were used for these same lyrics, it would be wack.
@darapgame89 you’re right, Master P even gave 50 a lift before he blew up. One of my favorite rappers from Houston is Z-ro. He got his shine, but not at the level he deserved. Rap-a-lot wronged him
My favorite rapper ever, dude always been consistent and never compromised with the barz. He stomped on T.I and embarrassed him on "war with god"
Let's get this straight. Jay-Z was never in it for the art. Later in life he grew to learn about it and change slowly, but he's a hustler, a businessman til the day he dies. His focus was money so that's why he got to be a billionaire. Even those after money don't tend to have his focus and skill. He understands when to lay back and when it's time to go.
But 4:44 was definitely in the right direction. But I think he realized that although Jay has always been respected, he was never gonna be on the level of a Kendrick for example. His art, his presentation in album form. His videos too! Jay was flashy, knew when to release, when to collab, etc. He's closer to a Drake than a Kendrick except he can be very lyrical and without trying, barely.
If you're in it for the music, don't follow the advice of a Jay-Z, 50 Cent or shit like that. If you're in it for the money and hustle, then sure, follow their footsteps. But now that I'm older, I'd hate to be in Jay's position compared to a Kendrick. Kendrick has liberty to do so much, has carved a place for himself while also gaining the mainstream's attention. Rare and hard to do. Look at our history.
My point is Luda shouldn't do what Jay would do. Otherwise he isn't Luda anymore. Be yourself. But Jay doesn't care about that. Just do only what makes business sense.
My guy you wrote all that for nothing. Jay wasn’t giving advice, he gave an observation..,and he was right. Luda agreed with the observation and they both moved on a long time ago. What are you talking about?🤦🏽♂️🤣
I don't follow, Jay-Z has done it all, and continue to drop classics whenever he wants. Don't be fooled by all the internet hate, Jay-Z can drop tomorrow and the music world would stop.
I hear someone who accepts that Jay-Z is a dope artist, since every credible opinion says so, but doesn't really understand his art.
Jay-Z put out 8 classics in 8 years, one of them being a double album, and wrote everything you've ever heard from Foxy Brown in the same period and some big hits for other artists, countless remixes, soundtracks, mixtape joints and oh, those R-Kelly colab albums with big hits.
To come back after a short retirement and put out another career's worth of music is not something you do for money. No way you can have that motivation, for money.
A lot of you think it's the "crazy in loves" with Beyonce, the hits with Pharrell, and the fact that he's got money that he's respected. Nah man, I challenge you to listen to the Dynasty, one of the less heralded albums he put out, spend some time on it, you'll appreciate just how unparalleled he is in the goat conversation. He inspired generations of rappers, from Wayne to 50 Cent to Game to Jeezy, to Rick Ross to Drake.
I don't think you realize, Kendrick has the same output in his prime as Jay-Z in retirement. They literally have the same amount of music since 2010. Not to mention, Kendrick suffers from writer's block, anxiety, and no one can confidently say he will ever put out another record. So, I don't know what you mean by "he can do what ever he wants". The most fascinating thing about Kendrick is that he's been a new artist and people were interested in his story, on top of him putting out legendary music, of course. Ironically, Jay-Z's recent music is inspiring him. You can't tell me, 'aunty was a man' is not inspired by 'smile' off 444.
😂bruh wrote a pointless novel completely off subject, and Kendrick's once every 4yr droppin weird ass aint on Jay's level🙅🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️

I remember Jay z said the exact same thing about busta rhymes when he said it about luda. They both animated characters in videos etc. So cos of that some people don't give them the credit lyrically.
Give this man his flowers. From the time he stepped into the game he had bars. One of my favorite punchline rappers his bars are amazing. He was running the game in his prime
Luda is one of the GOATS, no doubt. Lyrically, stylistically - and he doesn't have a problem clowning himself. He doesn't take himself so seriously like he always has to be frontin, and acting hard. I love rappers who do that.
The man is so talented. And ALSO he's a really good actor!!
Ludacris most definitely got his credit for his lyrics. That's why a lot of Rappers didn't want to do tracks with him cause of his bars.. His video made him stand out too.. him, Redman Busta and Missy was is always in a different lane.. which is great..
Good point imagine paying an artist for a feature and getting all the hype from your track lol
Luda needs to start droppin freestyles like everybody else is doing. Open mics, live sessions, and hard azz barz. No videos, just Luda and a mic. I bet his views and listens on his catalogue of music starts rising and getting way more likes. It'll also show his lyrical abilities without the over tha top vidz.
I think Luda Just gets disrespected in general. Even when people talk about the TOP 5 Greatest ATLANTA rappers he’s not even there . People lists are usually: 1. Outkast 2. Killer Mike 3. Gucci 4. Jeezy 5. Toss up between TI, Thug or Future. And that really makes me feel a type of way.
Luda had some of the best videos in the game with the rhymes to go with it that's why he is my favorite rapper all time
Criminally slept on. Hes a true artist not just a studio rapper
Nah he’s a studio gangster that’s why we don’t talk about him being one of the greats, was never in the streets like he claimed in the 2000s. Instead white people love his music and watching him in movies.
Definitely underrated
He was on the same track with Nas and Jadakiss and in my opinion had the best verse
He still lyrical to me. I love the fact that he creative with his rhythms that’s what’s missing
The crazy part is, it’s really because he’s considered to be a southern artist, ludacris and Busta rhymes are the same artist from different coasts and get judged completely differently
Luda is in my top 10! He’s one of the best lyricists in the game!
Mannnn bump all that Luda is one of the best lyricalist out there . I LOVE HIS VIDEOS they added to the song and references .
He Deserves it and it's sad that he doesn't legend 🏆🐐
Luda’s word play and visuals are a breath of fresh air. He’s an original and that’s what I love about him/his music.
I bet every so-called lyrical rapper would take his career over there's any day. Let's be honest most people listen to music just to entertain them. Unless you are going through something and a particular song hits home due to the lyrics you just want to Bob your head and Vibe with it. On another note can we give Ludacris a handclap for defeating father time. This is coming from a straight male he has aged very well and pretty much looks the same
That’s a bad reason to not get credit for how dope he is lyrically.
Ive al ALWAYS appreciated Luda.
I love his track "Large Amounts" and "We got dem guns".
You know what.. that whole album had Tracks that I still bang to this day.
Theater of the Mind cemented him for me as a real MC and put him in my top 15.
One of my favorite albums
I say the same thing about 2 Chainz and E40. Their delivery gets more shine than their lyrics so a lot of people miss some deep punchlines.
Imagine if everybody sounded or delivered the same way tho. Hip Hop would be boring as shit & they know it lol thankfully guys like them & luda had they own way of expressing things
Luda was just doing his own thing and that’s what rap is about
He always been underrated don’t know why but his vocabulary an wittiness with bars is top notch he reminded me of the new school busts rhymes when I was younger
Luda been crazy nice with the lyrics and flow, but in the rap game it's more about star power than lyrics. The crazy thing is he had that too. Maybe he was just a little bit too different for the masses. Or maybe the direction he took business wise wasn't that great.
Even TI knows Luda is a beast when he dissed him on Young Buck song😂
He’s a great emcee especially styles wise and lyrically i salute him he always thrills me when he raps
Busta did the same kinds of crazy vids too back in the day. He gets lyrical credit.
If you want to be considered one of the greatest, you need to give your fans vulnerable records, in order for them to relate with you. Luda had a lot of party records. That’s why top tier MCs such as Busta Rhymes and Redman doesn’t get the recognition too. Too much party records and they were not serious with their stuff (visual)
U right...Few can touch him on the mic and I always knew that...but I always wanted to listen to sadder, deeper, more serious songs though he do got " Hard Times" w/ 8ball & MJG...Never felt "Runaway Love" though...
Growing up ludacris was one of my favorite rapper during the 2000s. I knew alot of southern rappers weren't lyrical in the 2000s, but I always held Luda to the same rapping level as OutKast, Nas, jay-z, Eminem, T.I, Kanye west, lil wayne 50 cent, Dmx, etc during his era.
even as a high schooler i could recognize luda’s talent. i always felt like he didn’t get the credit he deserved because he wasn’t excuse me for lack of a better term “hood enough”. gotta rap about selling drugs to survive and prove how violent u are. hip hop is biased in that way. so yeah he summed it well he is too playful.
Andre 3k was before and after him and is considered by most lyricist and hip hop head as one of the greatest. So are alot of the non violent guys from the 80s.
@@iamrysheem andre truly is the exception. but are there many exceptions? not really.
@@mirrrorismycompetition yeah in rap. I just said alot of guys from the 80s. The problem is even people who claim to be against it only focus on negativity. They just did a top mc list not too long ago. In todays time. Its drake kendrick and cole. Busta Rhymes would make some peoples like. Krs one, big daddy kane, mc lyte, lauryn hill, common, kanye west. Lupe fiasco. If you focus on negativity thats all you will see.
its also why he can move how he moves... in movies and such... because of his image....BUT I'D LOVE TO SEE A VERSUS ... LUDA vs LiL Wayne
Luda ros is top 20 all time greatest in my opinion. He’s always been slept on lyrically and I too think his cartoonish ways play a role in that
Luda catalog is crazy not one bad album frfr
And had the best intros as well.
I'm a huge Ludacris fan but Double edge sword to me, if he credit more his lyrics rather his flashy and animated over the videos, he still be top their g.o.a.t but debatable of his overall accomplishments outside of hip hop plus the time, he had to stand out.
Top 3 underrated MC who could easily be a top 3-5 dead or alive MC …
Ludacris will pack some of your favorite rappers. I said what I said
Ludacris got a sense of humor of rapping. That man got bars& punchline for days since early 2000s. He not only got sense of humor you got Eminem, Redman, Big Boi, Andre 3000 and Jay-Z but some of lyric are funny but most of time they keeping real in their songs. But Anyway Ludacris deserve his roses to smell from Hiphop game cause he earn his respect from his fans, his music , acting and customer to come and support his five star restaurant as well that man been succes to him and his family 💯🙏🏾
NAS THE 🐐
nas the gayest
I don't understand the business, part of the music industry so I don't understand about not getting credit for visuals, but I do know that I love Ludacris and I love his music. I know videos are important, but I'm loving his music.
It’s a corny excuse !!! Not everything or everyone needs to be “Hardcore” for it to get respect. Eat if you listen to not only the lyrics the the flow he rips it in.
It makes no sense. Cause we've had lyrical artists make fun/goofy vids before and not have it held against them.
Luda, Busta, Missy and Redman set the bar for visual creativity for music videos and they all got bars.
