That's some rich looking soil. Fruit trees and other vegetation would probably love to live in that soil.

Josh something to think about. Mount your solar panels on stand alone poles instead of the roof, looks like you have plenty of land to do so. That way you can align the panels to solar south and maximize their production. Also if you ever have to have work done on the roof of the house you don't have to pull the panels off first. I did this at the recommendation of my solar installer and I'm really happy I did. It will add to the install cost but I think it is worth it.

That would also make them easier to clean and maintain, there are a whole bunch of advantages to having them off the house.

40 acres is quite the find these days. Congratulations on the new family homestead. Plant some hickory trees and other trees that take a long time to mature and live for a hundred years or more for future generations. I planted over 200 trees and my house was only on 1 acre. I planted 30 hickory seedlings knowing that I wouldn't be able to enjoy them but planted them so future generations could enjoy the fruits of my labor.

This is going to be a very cool place! I'd love to have the inside workspace for projects. There was a house built with energy efficiency in mind in Maine (I think it was a Yahoo article) that has a very small heating and electric demand. The construction was similar to what your doing plus I'm sure they added additional insulation.
Congratulations on the build. I can't wait to see the progress. Now to get JR to get his dream built going!
    Take care!

Might want to check your gate size in comparison with your trusses.
I had 10/12 trusses that would not make it through my gate sideways or standing so we had to disassemble gate topper. Looking back, I would have put the gate top on a huge hinge to swing out if the way.

You’re in Kansas so definitely a storm shelter/tornado shelter and those are easier to put in while laying down the concrete flooring so just a thought. Derek from vice grip garage added one to his place and I think it was something like 6k.

Makes total sense how you felt kind of closeness to your father, working on his cars and finishing them. Would be great to get a run down of what you kept, what you sold and where they've gone to if you get a minute.

Make sure the foam in the walls is non-combustible. Any short in the wiring will give you a nasty in-wall fire.

Congratulations on your purchase. I'm sure it's a challenge, but will be so worth it. Consider looking at some small residential vertical wind turbines, during winter and at night they can be providing power for you.
