So glad I saw your review of this! Was days away from the getting the Samyang 50 1.4 II you reviewed, but it was just a bit speedy for how often I will use the focal length. I'll be glad to get this instead!
Hi there! Great review as always! Can I ask, next time, don't go from 1.8 to 2.8 on the sharpness test. Imagine if the lens gets a lot better at f2 or even f2.2, it would be clearly better than a 50f2.8 this way, it is really difficult to add value to a lens, has there a many lens with this focal that are excellent at 2.8, even zoom lens. It's a very good lens, easily beats my Samyang 45 f1.8, which just doesn't shine whatever I do with it, still, would not be my first choice 😅
I just got this lens and it's razer sharp at f2.2. It's sublime to shoot with. I agree with your sentiment, the author should test f2 and f2.2. The value of this lens is its F2-2.2 performance
hi, there's DEFINITELY something amis with your Samyang 45mm lens. This is one of the supreme models, has excellent optics and very good colours/skin tones for Portraits too. Please get yours fixed !!!!!
Is there hope for a Meike 50mm 1.8 AF review also? It's another extremely cheap lens (like 150-160 USD) but I've seen only two reviews for now, so I'd love some more opinions about it.
Here in China a new copy costs only 145 dollars which is basically a steal, and gives the much more expensive FE 55/1.8 ZA a really good run for the money.
Thanks for the review, good as always. I'm very surprised by the sharpness of this lens. If I didn't already have the Zeiss 1.8/55mm and wasn't a Zeiss-fanboy I'd go for this.
If it wouldn't say 7Artisan, I'd say this is a Viltrox lens. Reminds me so much of the Viltrox 23mm f1.4. It seems to me that this lens here finds its optimal fit on ff sensors up to 33MP.
Is longitudinal chromatic aberation only visible in close up pictures or do I have to close, the aperture down to 5.6 all the time, to get great pictures? Thank you for the methodical testings, of the lenses.
Do you happen to know where to get firmware updates for this lens? The 7artisans site doesn't even reference firmware but the marketing materials does talk about it. I've had this lens for a while now. Beautiful pictures and autofocus is fine but in some lighting conditions the camera can't seem to figure out it's light processing and it can't take the picture. This seems to be a lens issue.
Just came back to this after watching the review of the nikon version and there is definitely more fringing in this version of the lens. I think if i used this lens i would just never go below 2.8. or i would just clean it up in post if i absolutely had to go lower than that but i can't see any reason to do that unless i'm shooting landscapes at night or doing astrophotography. But in that case i would be using a wide angle lens anyway. I think this is a good lens for everyday shooting
Hi Sir. Could you please make a video comparison between Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 aps-c & Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 FE. As the FE lens has dropped its price, now it's less than the Aps-c in India.
Good price. Personally I don't like 50mm. It's just not interesting enough a focal length. 105mm and above is more my thing. If they can compete with 135mm 1.8S I'd be interested. These smaller companies need to challange the big canera brands. Forces their prices down. Look at sony.
In most videos you talk about how declicked aperture rings are good for video - can you explain how this is the case? I don't understand the use case for declickable aperture rings in video.
There are certain types of shots where you adjust the aperature while executing your shot to go from a shallow to deep DOF in order to convey a narrative element, as well as smoothly adjusting your exposure and having finer adjustment during a shot or just hitting that exact perfect aperature for how you want to expose
@@RedShade_Studios I see your point, but don't think any mirrorless can adjust exposure quickly enough to show that change without affecting brightness..
talking about professional film sets here, you can easily do that via manual control or by having all your lights rigged to a master control and raising them equally. we use this in cinema not frequently but enough. another example you be to smoothly but rapidly adjust your exposure when going from indoors to outdoors@@MattTrevett
What I don't like about this lens design is the lack of detent or click stop for the "A" setting in the aperture ring. The same goes for the AF/MF switch. It could get, easily, dislodged by a finger. 🙄
Aps performance is pretty bad wide open, way worse then you describe by voice. On FF would be interesting to see if the purple fringing in the centre will disappear at f2 already, or we need to wait up to f2.8 Personally I never use f1.8 lenses wide open, but I treat them as f2 just to give them a slight kick; would be interesting if you could do a f2 test of f1.8 lenses when you review them, to show how much a small sacrifice of a mere third of a stop could (or couldn't) improve a lens.
Agreed. I don't know if it's just my copy of the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 but moving it up just to f1.6 shows a considerable upgrade in quality (Not stellar, but it's a tiny sacrifice in aperture for a fairly significant boost in IQ).
With that abberation issue, this is more 50 mm f2.8, not f1.8, as it's useless wide open, but excellent at f2.8. Better selling marketing, if they just skipped that f1.8 and it would look beautifull as f2.8.
Another name for this lens "CAs Galore" Blooming flare doesn't help much either. A definitely pricey lens at $230 for a host of visible artifacts you get.
Not so great performance, awful color fringe, plenty of close up chromatic aberration , distorition, vignetting, not great bokeh either, big and heavy. I would go ( for nikon ) for the 40mm f2 all the way instead.
I came here to say that if I don’t see you review a RF mount third party lens in the next 90 days I’m gonna unsubscribe 😂😂 kidding but seriously let’s get the open RF mount going
And Canon’s and Nikon’s 50’s are Crap for Crappy Users with No Clue! I Use Sigma Art Line 50mm and The Otus 55mm both are Extremely Sharp and get the Job Done.
No Canon's 50mm f1.8 USM EF was actually better than my Canon 50mm f1.4 USM EF which was expensive. Not sure about RF versions. Zeiss Otus or Milvus around £500+ -- not really a fair comparison !!!
I just got this lens and it's wicked sharp at f2.2 with little to no noticeable color fringe on the bokeh in most situations. This video undersells it a fair bit. It's actually way closer in quality to the Zeiss 55mm than it is the 50mm FE. It's a very good lens at only a ~$25 premium over the 50mm FE which lacks sharpness everywhere at all settings
wow, that is such a performance for the price

For the price, this is a 10/10

thx for this comment. Its really important information and help make a decision(positive news)

😊 I have their 50mm f1.05 for Z mount. It performs brilliantly even at f1.05. Little heavy though.
Hi Cristopher, thanks for another great review. Can you say anything about how this lens stacks up against the Viltrox 50mm AF 1.8?
Thanks for the review, good as always. I'm very surprised by the sharpness of this lens. If I didn't already have the Zeiss 1.8/55mm and wasn't a Zeiss-fanboy I'd go for this.
as always...great video.
i wish you would post more about MFT.
greetings from the Netherlands.
chris never did afaik, he doesn't seem to care much for MFT (me too tbh so i don't mind much)
MFT isn't dead. It just smells funny.
@@yesthisisdonut that's just sad, we don't talk about analogs, but smaller formats.
How does it perform against the meike 50mm af 1.8?
Not bad. A little fringing when wide open but if you can get around that then you've got yourself a pretty good budget full frame lens.
If it wouldn't say 7Artisan, I'd say this is a Viltrox lens. Reminds me so much of the Viltrox 23mm f1.4.

I'd get this one as my first autofocus lens.
Woww this is a great lens!

I'd stick to using f8+ for optimal quality and a sturdy tripod. plus rain cover if in the UK (!!!!)
Very impressive for the price!
Hi Sir.

If you can get ttartisan 56mm f1.8 or 7artisan 50mm f1.8 for less than their SRP what would you choose?
This vs the Sony 50mm 1.8 oss ? Which one is better
In Malaysia when direct convert the price it's 186 which crazy
So which one Sony FE 50 1.8 or this?
Looks fine nut had a Samyang 45mm in past and I’d choose it again against this one
Can you use this on sony zve10 without adaptor?
That fringing makes ir useless at f1.8 though f2.8 looks notably good!
Hope the next video is meike 55mm f1.4 af

Samyang has a superb 135mm lens.
Hi Chris, please do review on fujifilm 8-16 f2.8
Don't get it it's good IQ wize but too bulky. Tamron or Sigma are great options for wide angle

Will this lens work for macro if is reversed?
At first, I was asking why? Then i heard the price, and was like okay, thats good. lol.
2:28 anyone else have the same shirking problem with their crystal pepsi? I would love to know what causes it.
What I don't like about this lens design is the lack of detent or click stop for the "A" setting in the aperture ring. The same goes for the AF/MF switch. It could get, easily, dislodged by a finger. 🙄
Haha, the aperture ring is a little suspect. Not sure what to make of "2 - - 1.8". Are those 1/9th stop marks? Lol
I got one, those 2 dots means nothing, some as the 2 dots after 16, the apture doesn't move or goes to auto.

this is viltrox little brother trying to catch up with its bigger brother
7artisan is an older brand than viltrox, but developing slower.
Should be f/1.4 for this size and weight
The af/m switch sucks, trust me i just bought this
Canon nifty fifty still the king
i was hoping for under 199 usd.
Couldnt see the vignetting at all on those chart.
Too big for a 50/1.8
With that abberation issue, this is more 50 mm f2.8, not f1.8, as it's useless wide open, but excellent at f2.8.

Only slightly better than the outdated native 50 1.8 at similar price it seems
Sony 50mm f1.8 on offer at £150....
1🎉

yeah. that's on special offer now at £199 in UK.
lol. Obviously you didn’t go through this review.
Hard pass lol
A small improvement over the kit lens at the same price

Similarly priced as the sony 50 mm f1.8 FE . I'm seeing no interest in going for this Chinese brands over a native brand lens.
So, image quality is nothing for you in comparison to the country of origin? ))
Autofocus very slow on the native one.
