Good job Dave. I don't make them that way but you got it done and it works.

Thanks Randy. Your video was what finally made me curious enough to make one...

@@TheMiniMachineShop machinist here, the hole must be offcentered towards your wall so the insert can snug itself in as you tighten the screw

Very impressive Dave. I just ordered some more Jinwen tool holders from you-know-where but now I'm wishing I'd made some. Nice job!

No denigration intended but I heard tell ages ago that anyone could be a hero in aluminum. Off the shelf versions can be tooled with just normal woodworking equipment. The esoteric alloys are a different beastie all together. Kinda like welding steel - just about anyone can do it. Welding copper/nickel is a whole new ballgame. I've watched a couple of your videos and don't fault any of them, you do what makes you happy and I'm glad. If other people do it different so be it and I'm happy for them. Kinda like cooking. Everyone has their version of Green Bean casserole and think it's the best - there are very few that stand apart tho. Keep doing what you do!

good video Dave Enjoyed it very much. I made one a while ago but used high speed steel, of course on the first attempt, I cut it backwards. I think the insert is a lot more durable than the one I made. Cheers!

it might help stability a little if you center the toolpost over the 2nd slide before machining , from wat i see its kindah hanging over thin air

Did you put the top of the incert on centerline? Other wise you will get rubbing on the tool! Next by tilting the insert so the tip does the cutting on the bottom you no long have a 60 degree dove tail cut.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it but TOP of insert should be on centre not the bottom face of insert. As it is your running 1/8" (?) above centre

Not sure where you perceived this from as I've done videos showing how to set the cutter on rotational center. Even in the video facing was on center.

I'm doing a bit of reading about cnc,the insert tooling for a lot of what is available is made to cut either material specific and or at specific rpm and feed rate to avoid chatter.
I know this is going to be harder to sort out on a manual turning operation ,but it's worth finding out to get the best finish ,especially if you're machining a shank for a cutting tool that won't be surface ground to size.
You can "nc" using stepper motor drive for the x and y axis, you can have manual dialed input for feed rate or using say an "arduino" to drive the steppers, all very simple to do,lots of vids on youtube on the subject,it's something i intend to add to my manual mill and lathe plus a DRO.

I've had many talk about feeds and speeds and have many books and tables on the subject. And have done lots of experiments over the years only to decide to ignore it all. Watch CNC videos who run cutters at 10,000 RPM ignoring all the rules. I get fantastic finishes and can hold .0002 tolerances just use cutting fluid. 3 motor oil to 1 kerosene.

I made a tool post grinder with a dremel that works GREAT for doing finish passes on 1018/A36.

How funny I've been throwing ideas around all morning on one. But want something a little heavier than my Dremel. Was hoping to hold a 3" x 1/2" wheel or something like that. Problem is finding a motor...

    • @therealstubot
      @therealstubot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed, the dremel is really weak. But its fine for dusting off half a thou. I wouldn't trust it to hold perfect tolerance, but I have used it for making guide rods out of 4340 steel, which machines like crap, especially 7 inches long and around 3/8th thick. I maintained a thou, but I make probably 20 passes to get it right.

Seems the bottom of the insert is on center when really the top (cutting edge) should be on center see video at th-cam.com/video/l8n4NoekbQE/w-d-xo.html
Also you said you wanted the insert to point downward a bit... wont this cause the dovetail angle to be more than 60° since the insert is already 60...??

There are 3 main lathe suppliers, the little machine shop, grizzly and harbor freight. They all come from one factory in china all with different issues. I have the HF 7x10 and spent countless hours learning and fixing problems. All problems and repairs are posted in different videos on my channel. I don't think it matters which one you get but in order of best support to none is LMS, Grizzly, HF. Feel free to email me privately if you need more help....

That was some generic made in China test indicator I didn't care if damages. Ebay has them for a few dollars.
