      Excactly what I thought. On guitars, TBone was far more brighter sounding and I prefer that, but for snare, original SM57 kinda sounded nicer. In general, you would be happy to record with any of these, no matter what instrument. Pricewise I would definitely get couple of TBones for home studio. (Or in "real" studio I would get good mix of these to record drums and guitars.)

    • @soulslip

      Exactly! I even like to use cheapo RCA M58 knock offs and they have limited range especially mids, so works perfectly for overdriving vocals for a sweet crunchy older vibe. Or even those old little mics shure and sony made for those little portable reel to reel machines from the 50’s-70’s. I have a special Shure mic made specifically for thr Revere T-100 tube recorder that sounds sweeeeeet!! Never know how something works or sounds until you try!!

    I thought A was the 57 because it seemed to respond like my 57 does when I used to mic and record my amp. Maybe the issue was my bad mic placement. lol

    • @Torniojaws
      @Torniojaws 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally. The A sounds exactly like my real 57 does, so it was quite surprising to hear the real 57 sound much darker here. Makes me even wonder if his 57 is somehow damaged, hehe :D

    • @slavesforging5361
      @slavesforging5361 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      there's no way to know what your 57 sounds like compared to his. that's not how these tests work. it's about knowing what a 57 sounds like compared to other dynamic mics in general. does it generally have a lot of highs, lows, mids? so you'd have to compare your sm57 to your other dynamic mics, then use that info to assume that it would compare similarly to an unknown dynamic mic. That's the only way to guess right on a video like this. make sense?
      i knew that sm57's have a huge mid boost with less highs compared to other dynamic mics i've tested on the same source and placement. so i assumed they would have more mids and less highs than this new unknown mic too. there's a chance i could've been wrong, but in the case of the sm57 not a very big one, since it is very dramatic about what it picks up and doesn't.

    I think the issue was when the 57 was played in the mix the richness of the low mids were concealed, so we all prefered the T Bone for its highs, which cut through better. However in isolation the 57 has a silkier sound, which on its own i prefer. hmmm now i really dont know which one to get !

    honestly they both sound pretty good, and the isolated guitar tracks it seems like the sm57 has more mid-to-low end, but the travel was definitely more defined on the T-bone and it seems like it had a flatter broader range overall, a blend of the two would be perfect.

    Damn, I used a MB75 based on this video for a long time and recently bought an SM57 because i want to broaden my portfolio for IR creation. Liked the MB75 in this video a lot more, but after having rhe SM57 here, coming different conclusions here.
    The MB75 is nice, but once I smacked the SM57 deadcenter on the TR speaker of my G12 vintage loaded Marshall 1960AV, it was like a true epiphany. SM57 all the way for me onward!
    SM57 has a super gnarly tone to it which was always what I had missing with the MB75.
    But - MB75 is a GREAT microphone for the price, still sounds great. We will still use them live, they are absolutely suffiicient for and also professional work, but for studio works, gotta revise my former stance of liking the MB75 more. SM57 is just "the sound," to me. Super generic, Boosted 5150 clone into a Marshall V30 cab with SM57, most boring tone on earth to most, but to me it's sonic heaven!
    Nonetheless, this video represents awesomely the differences between the two mics so thanks!
    I will do a video soon on showing the differences in my setup.

    I really had no idea which was which last week, all I knew was that I preffered the A on guitars, and the B on drums. I'm definitely going to get a T-Bone, and use it for random things, as you said for $30, you really can't lose.
    Edit: Well, it's priced at $30 and shipping costs $30 extra to the US. It's not that bad, but I think I would buy if I was already buying something else from Thomann.

    like many i'd have said A was the 57 because of the highs. but i could have expected A to be the tbone, as hyped highs is often a complaint on cheap mics. but the s57 sounded much darker that what i'm used to with my 57 and my amps. obviously speaker, cab, placement etc make a big difference.

  • @Deerob
    @Deerob 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it's great and maybe even impressive for a 20EUR mic to get started! But, cheap mics always have this "harsh" highend which I find to be very annoying to EQ. I'm not saying I would have picked the right mic (just saw the original video) but don't take the cheap mic just because it's brighter, it's the bad kind of high end guys! The mids of the SM57 just had that beef and the top end was smooth, THAT'S what you guys want! :)

      I wasn't criticising the comparison, I was commenting on the people who arrogantly claimed that it was obvious which mic was which and got it wrong. • @slavesforging5361
      @slavesforging5361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trilobite- why don't you go ahead and evolve arleady!? haha, just kidding. i basically agree with you.
      it definitely has more to do with product loyalty and popularity rather than people actually thinking about what the mic sounds like. i always think of sm57's as a filter that unnaturally guts lows and highs, and should be used accordingly. people just assume the one they like better is the popular one, expensive one, or best one. they don't ask themselves what the mic or gear actually does in a general comparison to other gear. it shows how much people do what other's are doing, without actually listening to the results or running any experiments of their own. another great opportunity for learning brought to you by Spectre Media Group! right mic for the right job.
      i knew immediately which mic was which, even though i don't use sm57's. i don't even own one. it's because i am familiar with them and don't like them. i suppose if a band insisted i use them, i would pick a couple up. maybe i'd get the t-bone instead! (probably would, haha). i think needing to tame the high end is a good trade for not having the same generic and artificial sounding midrange that everyone else has via 57's. but that's my personal artistic preference i guess. i prefer a flat condensor mic for distorted guitars. (of course, if a band specifically insisted on a standard modern metal radio tone, i would give it to them- after some discussions of course).
      i actually always recommend when people are demoing a mic, that they compare it to an sm57 just because it is so popular and people know what it sounds like. (but i guess they don't)! it's the only way to get an idea of the new item. gotta compare it to something old. every metal amp should be played next to a 5150, every speaker cabinet should be tested against a mesa rectifier oversized, every mic should be tested against an sm57, every speaker should be tested against a Vintage 30. just so we know which side of 'neutral' (or standard) a thing sounds. it's like a photo- there's gotta be something for scale.

  • @RedHeadGuitar
    @RedHeadGuitar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What cab and speaker (and amp) are you using and how is the mic placed? Sorry if I missed that in the video. Reason for my question: I found a video on Martin Link's channel comparing the same two microphones and stunningly enough my verdict in his video is the complete opposite than in your videos. Here, the MB75 sound brighter and cuts through the mix more. In his video, it's the other way round. Wow. So I wonder if the cab/speaker makes all the difference. Differen resonance frequency can be a huge difference in sound. I'm currently only recording with IRs and a Torpedo Captor very happily, but I want to try miking a real cab. Can't decide which mic to buy after watching two different videos. Thank you so much for your content. One of the best heavy music channels on youtube. Edit: Listening on RCF Ayra 4 monitors

  • @AdamRainStopper
    @AdamRainStopper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually think I guessed wrong too, but I was guessing wrong in the context of hating 57 for their upper-mid spikeyness. From looking at me, you'd probably guess that I am against spikeyness. Anyway, that particular 57 sounds more rounded than 57s in general, assuming you put it around the same spot as in your "how to record heavy guitars" video. That said, I prefer the Tbone on snare and can imagine using it on certain bass cabs, but I like THAT 57. Hmmmm.... Trade you an I5 for that 57?

  • @SynnUnsworth
    @SynnUnsworth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm pretty impressed... I've been saving for a few 57s (and also searching for something similar) and I have to admit I couldn't really tell the difference except on the snare (although had no idea which mic it was) being able to pick up a few T-bones for the price of one 57s might be a better option for me right now!!
    Glad you did this experiment Glenn may have swayed me so I can crack on with these new projects

    Prefered B, kinda wished it would have been the cheaper mic, though the difference isn't as much as the 57 vs the pyle. Though is it possible that the age/amount of usage of the mic could be a factor?

    They sound different but not one is really better, the 57 has that characteristic peak in the upper mids, the tbone seems to have less and at a different frequency. I think I preferred the tbone on the snare there was a little more sizzle and crack but maybe for guitars id prefer the 57 for heavy distorted rythmn unless I was blending with a ribbon then the bright tbone might be nice and clean guitars well be less nasal. Think I may grab a few as an alternative sound and for multi mic situations.

    as i said on previous video, mic a all the way to me... and... while i didnt guess which one on the comment.. i knew i was gonna choose the cheap one.. had my doubts though.. i have an sm57.. id surely choose a m75 for home use as its brighter, but for live, in a situation that you mic a cab instead of an isolated cabinet, sm57 is darker so is preferable because the "room" sound when compared to same sound going live outside, well, low end and fullness is kinda of a problem.. to me.. for 30 f@ckin bucks, im happy that i prefered that instead of sm57 and as glenn said, yeah i can pick 3 of them now in the price of sm57... not sm57 at alll.. but still a good mic

  • @TheChadPad
    @TheChadPad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if trying different distances away from the cab would change the results for the guitar demo. I actually preferred how the Tbone sounded for guitar, but this depends on where the mic was placed and how that interacts with the guitar and amp. It may have just not been placed in the best spot to compliment the natural tones of the guitar and amp. I'd like to point out that in the very first clips played, I MUCH preffered mic B over mic A for what was being played, and that was the Shure

    Whaaaaat??? An SM57 copy for 30$? That's a rip off. I got my Chinese copy for 14 $ :D. I'm sure TBone is rebranding those 10$ mikes...
    By the way, a low pass filter will solve that bright sound...You will probably need that in the mix anyway...Even if you put those mikes through a cheap mixer Like Behringer (Glenn showed that before) you' re very very very veeeeerrrryyyyy good to go....

    Just checking now -- MD 75 plus shipping to USA is $75.41 -- so not exactly a deal. mic sounds cool, but I can get a used SM 57 for $55-$60 relatively easily. shipping from Germany is obviously not as easy

    T.bone is like an improved SM57. It is more balanced. I have two MB75 beta which are even better. Great mics for the money.

  • @MadJack122
    @MadJack122 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It wasn't balance right in the original video hence why many people are saying they preferred it.
    Pretty obvious as shure had to balance that 2-5k region pretty professionally as it's susceptible in that region anyway, so as soon as you hear the T-bone with it's ridiculously harsh boost there it's obvious it wasn't the 57 for me.

  • @jaethomasmusic
    @jaethomasmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mean, it's not just that it's hyped high end - it's more present and could definitely be used for acoustic guitar and live sound. Like you said - that shure 57 will sound like ass compared to that tbone, I bet.

    So, I guess the only difference in sound between these two is that MB75 gotta be EQd little bit more than the SM57, ESPECIALLY in 3k-7k area. Apply a wide Q cut about 4-6 dB, and it will sound just as good as 57 :)

    Well, I admit that I would have been wrong with my guess. I thought the A sounded better, and assumed it could be the 57. The good news is that I have one of those t.bones... no wonder I haven't found anything wrong with it, it's a good mic!

    the 57 is a little more mid heavy and darker on guitars. The T-Bone is brighter and more open than the 57, so I like it better for that. I used an e609 and a $25 Behringer XM8500 (I know, lol) using the cheap Behringer Mixer trick to reamp a DI for my guitarist, and I have side-by-sides where the XM is swapped for a 57, and I honestly like the XM better. The 57 sounded better for clean guitars, though. The T-Bone has more cut and top end on snare, but the 57 has more body, so I'd recommend the 57 or a 58 for bottom snare, and the T-Bone for the top snare. I did all my vocals using a Blue Bluebird and that shitty Behringer as a paired dynnamic, and so far everything is sounding really good. You USUALLY get what you pay for, but sometimes, you just don't, lol, and that can swing either way. "YMMV" is a thing.

    sm57 is fuller and has more punch at 110 to 120 hz and has the presence just at the right place imo ... the t-bone has more highs above 10 k so i think the sm 57 is better for guitar but on snare it was nice having a bit more topend ... i'm impressed i must say !

      Ask someone who's flying to Germany and back to Canada in a few days order it for you. Then you won't pay as much for dlelivery, only a couple more CADs... Same rule applies to all pairs of countries, cities, whatever... If possible, why not to ask someone to help considering the fact that you know them well and trust them, and that your favor won't be too heavy and way too bulky to transport?

      That's the catch... Finding a perfect opportunity to find a friend or a friend of your friend to ask for a favor. I saved somewhere around 250$US ordering my Canon 80D in Moscow and not Omsk, everything went fine, a friend of mum's sister delivered it to us when he was transfering through our city on a train. Just ask and look for an opportunity, that's all (and have an extra cash for occasions like currency fluctuations or baggage overload).

    I've been running a couple of Apex 775's as cheaper '57 standins, and they're pretty decent, too, albeit, still twice the price of the MB75, @ around $70CAD. They definitely lose the longevity battle, though, as they're entirely plastic. Barely worth it, when you factor that in, really.

  • @jonathanschmidt7874
    @jonathanschmidt7874 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can probably work out more detail by EQing the SM57 signal, for it has less personality than the MB75. Still, I probably would have been fooled, too, because the MB75 holds its own.

    This is why I didn't wanna guess. Lol, I was totally wrong (not surprised though). Despite that, I'm sticking to my choice of use as said in my comment on the original vid. I still do prefer A (75) on the guitar and B (57) on the snare, and would still choose B overall if I REALLY had to choose between then. Although, blending them won't be bad at all.

    Would buy one but the shipping to the US is currently more than the mic. I can find used 57s at local shops for around $50. Current price of an MB75 shipped to U.S. is €56.81 or about $65. Might be worth it if I ordered 4-5 of them.

    Actually bought myself two t-bones and one Shure like a year ago, just because 30 bucks isn't a whole lot of money to spend, so if the mics turned out shit I could always just say "meh, too bad". Turns out they sound rather nice. The PROBLEM with them though is that the quality control is worse, so you get more fluctuation in the curve than if you bought two Shure mics. So if you want several mics that responds the same way you should get the Shures. However, if that isn't a problem for you (it really isn't for me, I see them more as a different flavour), then go for it. Tbh they sound just as "good" as an SM57, they just don't sound the same. A really cheap way to get different tones. Looking forward to re-amping with them and see if I can fool our guitarists ;)

  • @rowlandstraylight
    @rowlandstraylight 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The t-bone doesn't have an output transformer. Removing the transformer is a popular mod for the SM57/SM58 as it makes the mic a little brighter. It's not so good with long cable runs, quiet sources and you many have problems with phantom power, but right on the money for recording loud sources like guitar amps and drums.
    I would really love to take an sm57 and an MB75 and compare both with and without the sm57's transformer. I wonder whether I have a broken mic with an ok transformer to test?

    I actually did prefer the Shure. Warmer smoother bottom end response especially in the mix. Less compressed sound on guitar. My crappy 4" speakers in this komatsu don't do justice but... As a snare mic- I wouldn't have an issue at all with the MB. The dam 57 is just the standard.

  • @officialjasonlamb
    @officialjasonlamb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I may be biased and/or conditioned here, but I'm saying SM-57 and I'm sticking to it. I'm listening to this particular video on a system that doesn't exactly play fair for the TBone, but in the real world, so is everybody who doesn't have a pair of studio monitors. I could flip over to a system that gives them a competitive edge, but... initial reaction, I'll still give the TBone's a close second, even though it's probably not as close as it could be. Nonetheless, if you absolutely NEED a studio full of mics and can't wait a couple of extra weeks to outfit yourself with something a little more industry standard, by all means, these competitors are SERIOUS competitors, but they also know what they're up against.

  • @petersams5054
    @petersams5054 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing to watch for with these cheap mics is the lack of transformer and non-standard wiring. The Pyle 57 copy ships with an xlr-1/4" cable is wired with no ground. Very odd. Also sounds similar but with a hyped low and high EQ. I sold them not long after I bought them

    Solo'd/unprocessed, I preferred the t.bone, but in the mix, I preferred the SM57. Maybe the 57 sounds better in the mix because Glenn would have much more experience with it vs the t.bone.

    The 'ole 57 sounded better to my ears on guitar while the 75 seemed a bit... not just darker, but maybe flabbier. Still great tone.
    On snare, however, I prefer the sound of the 75 over the 57. Sounds... I dunno, more thumpy and impactful (solo at least). That being said, you can't really reamp the whole drum performance so I'll leave the differences in sound down to human variation as well.

    How essential is it? Are they paid fixed amounts regularly or a percentage of the band's earnings? (Sorry if this topic has already been visited.)

    I didn 't see the "blind video", so no "guess" for me. Although the TBone sounded brighter, it was a bit too "tight" or narrow sounding. The SM57 had a lightly richer sound - which I liked more. That said, a couple of TBones will certainly have their place in a studio, especially when you are dealing with dense mixes.

    Know it's two years old, but I had it right. While it's darker, the 57 had a more rich and less brittle sound to my ears. Besides, I'm sure you could get the same brightness from the 57 by moving it closer to the center.
    Have you looked at the TBone MB 7? Looks like a $99 SM 7b clone and I'd be curious to see if 1/3rd of the price gets you as close to the real thing as this one gets to the 57

    Glenn I'd like to know how much effort it would take to EQ each mic to sound like the other. As in, can that much brightness be achieved through a 57 (I'd like to know since I already own some), or for someone on a budget, can you EQ a 75 to sound like the 57, (I did prefer the 57 on the snare on the blind test).
    I'm going to stand by my blind comments, I preferred the TBone on guitar and the Shure on the snare. That being said I tend to use an e609 with an sm57 on guitar for the extra top-end.
