  • A Brisbane cyclist, feeling demoralised waiting an eternity for a multi-stage light crossing at a recently upgraded intersection passes the time with an impromptu picnic or two.
3rd place winner at the 2023 Brisbane Bike Bites Short Film competition at the 8th Annual Space4Cycling Brisbane Bike Film Night.

Well done on 3rd place. Cars still rule this country.

We will dethrone them, you mark my words! (Probably have to mark them on my grave, but that's fine, we'll get there eventually).

Oh dang this is good. If this got third place, I'm damn disappointed I didn't get the chance to see the first and second place films! :O Congrats.

Check out Space4Cycling Brisbane on Facebook. They are showing all the short films progressively over the coming days. The winning film is a fantastic Lego stop animation piece!

Congratulations Chris for what was my 2nd pick and 3rd place from official judges for Brisbane Bike Bites short film comp at the Brisbane Bicycle Film Night.
The production represents the signal crossing experience well, and informs impact on uptake of efficient mobility.
For eScooters, who have less access to roads, and therefore experience more non-vehicle signal crossings, this impacts uptake of personal mobility - especially in summer when things heat up.
Perhaps council and the state should install street furniture and plant a few trees at these locations if the root cause (separated pathways and lanes) can't be addressed!

Love this! Same thing happens to pedestrians as well. We wait and wait and often no traffic passes....

Absolutely. If you're not in a car you're a second class citizen. That's the message from city councils and state transport departments in Australia!

Spot on. Didn't they bleat about how good this intersection was though?

Oh yeah. For cars. And the main bikeway runs under it through a tunnel (which is great). Just too bad if you're travelling east- west.

I actually felt myself age watching this.

What is really comtrasting is the experience of using something like the veloway where traffic lights are almost non-existent except as 5-10 second delays.

Yes, the difference when something is designed for bicycles and scooters to move through is chalk and cheese from a path added on to a road project.

Love it. Well done on third place. Wonder what got first and second? Films about drivers stuck in traffic? 😂

Cheers! Haha, no, strictly no pro-car culture content at this event ;-)
First place was an awesome stop animation using Lego.
Second place was a thrilling race through Brisbane between a bike, car and e-scooter.
Videos will be shared on Space4Cycling Brisbane's Facebook page.

Lmao I hate it when I'm walking to the train station through there. They should at least put up some shade.

Isn't it possible to get around the place? It seems to me that in America and Australia you have everything too big, including the size of blocks and roads. In Europe, there are more smaller streets and roads, so you can usually get around a problematic place.

    • @ChrisCoxCycling

Well, you can avoid this intersection. It means going an extra 2km, and still facing different but similarly frustrating delays at poorly designed crossings and junctions.

Now I understand why they put grass there
