Primary Vent Kit Milwaukee Eight 2019 Road Glide HD M8 fix Oil Transfer Transmission Leak Warranty

  • This video shows the Primary Vent kit installed during our 10,000 mile service; we had been hearing just a few things so we brought it up to the boys at Denney's while we were there. Sure enough, our bike was transferring fluids; needless to say, Harley is attempting to fix this issue but some 19's didn't have the fix & need the Primary Vent Kit installed. Within a half an hour, our bike was back & never had another problem.
    Please note:
    The primary vent kit isn't a recall, but an internal service bulletin that outlines direct diagnostics and corrective actions for EXCESSIVE transmission to primary oil transfer (some transfer between the compartments is normal and has been for years, hence the requirement to run the same oil in primary and transmission!!!)

    Keep an eye on your engine oil now. Many have had an issue of transferring from the engine to the primary after the primary vent was installed. I’ve installed the Greg Williams clutch rod on my 17 and my 19 to stop the transfer from the transmission to the primary. Over 60,000 miles between them and no further issues. Good luck.

    I have one of the first 2017 M8 to hit western Canada and it transferred up to 16 ounces in less than 500 miles. That’s right, five hundred!!! My dealer dicked me around for over a year telling me it’s impossible and tried the little deflector shield and a couple other fixes wasting my time and money. When it was first discovered that it was a vacuum being created in the primary side, I suggested we put a vent in there to alleviate the vacuum. They said it’s already vented through the transmission via the shift rod! No shit. THATS WHERE ITS LEAKING DIPSHIT!!!
    I installed Greg Williams pushrod and it completely solved the issue at around 40000 miles. Finally. Then when I brought it to dealer for a recall, they installed this vent without asking me and said “your problem should be solved now, Harley discovered this vent kit works”
    I showed him the email from over a year earlier where I suggested a vent and they laughed at me 🙄
    It seems you have a good relationship with your dealer and that’s great but I haven’t found one yet that I trust with my bikes. This fiasco was the last straw for me an HD. I’m done with bran new bikes and dealerships.

    Wait so fluid containing mechanisms that experience temperature fluctuations need to be vented or they will push past seals!?!?! Whoever discovered that at Harley deserves a raise!!

    A tip.for anyone wanting to fix it themselves. The vent hose is very soft and flexible. Put the hose over a bamboo skewer or similar thin stick and it will push right through the hole you drilled very easy. Fishing it through with pliers is a pain due to the cramped space. My method took seconds.

    My 2019 transfers oil like a m'f'er. At 10K miles, the factory absolutely refused to put in this vent unless I rode another 10K miles and had it verified at least twice by the dealer. THEN, and only then would they grant me the privilege of paying a $100 admin fee to do this $200 repair. I'm left with having to do this myself, and am grateful to you for this video, unlike H-D who sucks hairy ballsacks.

    Having a very hard time finding nutural is the first sign your primary is too full. My second sign was engine detonation. It was putting so much extra load on the engine spinning the primary it started spark knocking under heavy acceleration. I had 44oz of fluid in my Primary and only 14oz in my trans. Bike is still under warranty but I can't trust the Techs with my bike. $45 for the kit I did it myself. Hopefully the transmission wasn't damaged. Everything sounds and feels ok now. It took much longer to check the trans for the "witches hat" than it did to install the primary vent. Now is the time to Install aftermarket exhaust because I basically had to just about remove the full exhaust to get the Transmission cover off. And afterall that work my 2019 RGU did NOT have the hat. And Whatever you do, do not use loctite on the Primary Bolts! You will strip out the threads next time you remove them. Use a little anti seize.

    • @kingkrimson8771
      @kingkrimson8771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn, do you ever check your trans fluid level? You'd have to let it go a long time without checking for those problems to happen.

Called the service manager Nick, He asked me not to do anything to it, I trailered to Texarkana and they put the vent kit in, no charge to me. Now I'm gun shy, I check the oil everytime I ride now. Harley has come along way with quality control but it seems what one dealership will address others will deny. Its always something and Im in the market for another bike but it wont be a new Harley. To make it dependable you have to put on a few thousand dollars of aftermarket parts or keep going into the gear box or primary to make sure its not going to self destruct . I always rode Harleys and when I was young we thought we were cool if we worked on our own bikes. If im paying 18000 dollars to $30 thousand for a bike I should not have to make upgrades. Plus service fees at a Harley dealership are ridiculous. I feel I have to go back to early Twin cams and rebuild them to get a bike I need. Or cop out and buy a Japan motorcycle. Just saying

    • @kingkrimson8771
      @kingkrimson8771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a procedure to follow that will allow you to get a "goodwill warranty" for this problem even if your original warranty has expired. The transfer has to be confirmed by a Harley dealership first though, and it involves them setting the trans and primary fluids to the correct level, then rechecking them after 5,000 miles. Rather than jump through those hoops I will just buy the kit and install it myself.

    Everyone is using a term, “Transfer Issue,” I started using Red Line Gear in my Trans during my last Three Hole and now 1K miles later I am putting a Man-O-War Sprocket on my Road Glide. I noticed, both times, the red gear oil seeping through the clutch adjustment 🔩. Not a fan of venting in front of the rear wheel, I’m a DK Customs Catch Can guy. Chris from Cycle Solutions called this oil flow from Trans to Primary, “Migration”.
    Does anyone have the same issue with models after 2019? Because the Service Bulletin “M1492” only references 2017-2019.

    Some of the 2017 107’s had this issue as well, am I right? I’m on a 2018 Road Glide, and I’m tired of worrying about the possibility of this, not to mention that I would love to install a Stage 3 kit. However, I’ve heard too many horror stories. I think I’ll just get the vent and stick with a Stage 2.

    Problem with Harley is its many years before a new year engine replaces a very old one. Band aids are used until then. Other bike Manufacturers develop new engines more frequently to address problems faster. Euro 4 and now Euro 5 emissions will force Harley to make more frequent new engines designs and hopefully less band aids.

      andrew slagle you got it. I see it all the time people knocking Harley. I ask them have you ever owned one? Have you ever owned a new one? Usually it’s a 50/50 on the first question and much less on the second. Yes, they’re very expensive. If you can’t afford one cool, metric cruisers are cheaper. But all the knockers seem to build them metric imports up to look like Harleys. I’ve had two, both new. A 2001 Road king. Yup had to change the cam chain tensioners. And since have had a bad ass road king that still gets compliments and has almost 70,000 miles on it with very few problems. Hard miles too. Now I also have a 2020 street glide. The new m8 motors are awesome. Hate on haters.

    Sad as a Harley fan to admit they haven't made a reliable engine since the EVO. They seem to be engineering a few thousand dollars extra each year for service department revenue. They should replace every single defective motor they put out under full warranty no questions asked. And this stupid repair... a cordless drill taken to a primary housing, then they try to suction out one side of the equation, what about all the shavings on the other side?
