    The only thing that was slightly annoying was that this pergola doesn't really offer any position information from the controller, which made it hard to create any useful automations. Or least nay that weren't either fully open or closed.
    After considering a bunch of options, I added a tilt sensor module, a D1 mini and some ESPHome code which tells me the angle of the blades. Now I can automatically open to specific angles, track the sun for maximum or minimum shade, or simply have Home Assistant reflect blade angle accurately, regardless of whether the pergola was opened manually or through automations.
    Overkill maybe, but for me this has made this great product just that much more useful.

    Great job. This is the kind of DIY projects that I love. Your solution looks much better than the sketches from the contractors. Much simpler lines. And the "grill hack" is a really good example of how modifying a standard product is often much cheaper than building something similar from scratch.

    Mate, I don't want to make firewood from the fallen tree, but not knowing about import duties... that's totally on you, it's not something that should be expected from the shipper to inform you. For one they have idea, or obligation as to what custom duties the US charges on X comodity. Sorry, but that one is squarely on the importer. If you ever decide to import from abroad again, my humble recommendation, hire a freight forwarder for the import. Yes, it will add to the final bill, but, if you get a reputable agent, they will save you LOADS of time.
    Of course, none of that takes away that this was a great video and VERY informative!. Thank you for taking the time to make it. Keep on rocking.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I tried to take some responsibility for it in the video. I honestly just hadn't even thought of a difference between shipping and importing... I'd just never done it before.
      Like I said, I would have been happy with a quick heads up from the company saying "Hey, by the way, you will be responsible for extra fees like customs and port fees, you should look into that".

    • @pirate959
      @pirate959 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHookUp The average person will have no idea how complicated importing can be. This was a great piece of information. Another detail is FOB origin. The company is only responsible for the goods until they are picked up. After that, damage is your problem, the not the company.

    It looks beautiful. Unless you are familiar with importing items from overseas you want to make sure that whenever ordering something you specify with the seller that you want “DDP” terms. This stands for Delivery Duty Paid and shifts all of the importing risk onto the seller. The only thing you will be responsible for is unloading the item from the truck at the agreed upon location. AlunoTech send your item DAP or Delivered at Place. In DAP the seller pays for everything but customs clearance, which as you learned, can be quite expensive. Many sellers are unwilling to do DDP as they not not familiar enough with the importing costs. If you have a good customers clearance agent, he should be able to give you a good quote you up front what the customer clearance will cost, resulting in DAP actually being cheaper as the seller will sometimes just throw a huge markup on DDP to cover any possible mistakes.

However watching this and having a Chinese wife who will help with communicating overseas I'm feeling extremely optimistic now. This couldn't have came at a better time! Thank you!
    BTW: I still think all you Americans are a little bonkers for doing your own electrical 😛

    • @MrKing0fTown
      @MrKing0fTown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To do your own electrical right, you should pull the proper permits. Of course, this will vary by location, but where I am, doing this will get you inspected (which sounds bad, but is good). The inspector will look over everything you did to make sure it is to code. Basically, they will be able to tell you if what you did is safe or not.
      In some places, it is required to pull the right permits before doing any project. Again, this varies by location for sure.
      Also, I had to pass an NEC electrical test to be allowed to work on my own home (mandated by my county). It's not the full electricians test, but does make sure you know WHERE to find the answers (NEC code book) as well as the basics for safety.
      You don't know what you don't know, and I would be terrified that I will burn my house down if I did my own stuff if I didn't learn the basics. But if you stick to the correct wire size for the amperage, make good connections, add GFCI when supposed to, and are safe when doing it all (power off), it's not that bad. Knowing where you need conduit (wet locations usually), and types of wires and fill rates for conduit/boxes is also good to know!

    • @mitju7
      @mitju7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrKing0fTown Hey mate, this sounds like a happy compromise and with the right safety switch most accidents shouldn't happen and having an inspector sounds ok, that said electricity is the unseen killer and so much of the job is hidden behind walls that should require quality testing to verify the integrity of the cable to make sure it wasn't damaged during installation.
      What county city are you in Jim?

    I found this video shortly after Id placed an order with Alunotec, China for a retractable roof pergola. In my case, I asked specifically for DDP incoterms and they were happy to oblige. I expect to receive it in about 2 months and the $15,500 I paid includes shipping (to my door), import duty and VAT. The same structure from other UK suppliers would have cost in the region of $40K. (Im in the UK). Nice work by the way...... I bet you're very pleased with it several years later.

    props on taking on that concrete countertop, also fantastic save,. I took on the same undertaking for my laundry. Although they say TH-cam has everything on "how too's" personally i found out that the TH-cam videos on this are pretty lacking on some important details on how to really get that professional finish. After speaking to some professionals the main thing is the mix itself. Not many are ready to give exact mix details as its almost a trade secret to valuable to give up. But besides just cement aggregate sand water, you'll find in pro benchtop mixes they add plasticicers , densifiers, silica fume, elasticicers, and some fibreglass. theres also a few methods around some include spraying a top coat with another special slurry mix. Just yeah alot to it I found in my journey also

    Hi dear, Thanks for the video...we Just bought from Alunotec and more other products from Alibaba... Alunotec were very helpful indeed... but we got hit as well by customs fees port handling fees... and lesson learned don’t ship by shared container if you buy different stuffs hire a container, it will cost you exactly as you buy one single item beside the tax that you have to pay depending on which country you shipping to.

    I love that you’re once again providing tons of inspiration and great ways to save money by doing stuff yourself and using different materials. One thin I have to say though. If you get a quote for a BMW 3 Series and instead buy a used Volkswagen which you modify with cheaper material, you didn’t save money. You chose to spend less and you got a different quality product. (You kind of said that in the video too). While I agree the Chinese company should warn you about fees, they are not responsible for that. It’s different in every country! It’s kind of obvious that you have to pay all these fees, import tariffs and taxes, otherwise we would never buy domestic products again..
    Thanks for the inspiration and the safety advice on the LEDs in the pergola, that could be a life saver!

      I agree, in the case of the pergola I don’t think I compromised on quality. It’s nice thick aluminum with a quality powder coating... but for sure on the appliances.

      I thought that pergola looks great and you said it was easy to assemble. Thank you for mentioning the name of the company, I’m really interested in getting one of those. Let us know how it holds up over time.. I wish you and your family a great time in your new outdoor living space. Great job!

    Very Nice Rob, the import tax and fees is something we allways have to deal with here in Europe, most sellers will make a note in their listings that import fees and taxes is at you own risk. Keep up the great work, and stay safe.

    I like that you tracked how many labor hours were involved. I’m guessing this didn’t include time spent researching? For some projects I end up spending more time researching than building. But this looks like mostly time spent building.

    great work, how about a detailed peak at the individual components of the job, counter tops, motorized pergola, and then the wiring and layout of the leds and speaker systems.
