I already rated this show's score as being one of the best I've ever experienced before even seeing this scene. Just... wow.
Can't believe this show is almost 4 years old and it went way, way, way, under the radar. Probably HBO's greatest show.

alexstone108 I thought so!! I'm hearing impaired so most of the timen it hard to understand speech and music. The song is AWESOME and now its SPECIAL to me because I could identify it though the vibrations which is very rare for me.

I just realized: Laurie and the rest fo the GR ultimately look forward to their deaths, however it may come. She and all of them are suicidal. And I think that Jill knows that, so Laurie's struggling with the fact that her daughter wants to commit suicide with her and the idea that if she (Laurie) is justified through her faith in wanting to die, then by GR rules Jill must have the same right to want to die.
Such an underrated show.

How does something without religion show me religion?
Maybe the word you are looking for is faith.
Religion, the commandment package is there to guard us until we are mature enough to receive faith - the Christmas and Easter gifts combined. The gift of the sacrifice on the cross. The love for us.
Religions is the strict school master for someone spreading havoc around, endangering others with a hammer in the school corridor, or with a button in of counterstrike in his briefcase. Discipline for those not wanting to aim for self-discipline.
Faith is the freedom to rise on your wings, following Jesus in the air, over the trotting in the mud of those with no vision but the length of their nose, those curved inwards. Those feeding the greedy abyss called 'me, myself & I'. Follow him to the freedom of loving, caring and helping others. Would be selfish curving inwards to keep it to oneself.
And when airborn, nothing else matters.
The self-discipiline needed in freedom comes from the necessity: to stay airborn, you need self-disciple in certain manoeuvers. Not to bow to discipline itself, or be slavish for 'rule-makers', but for the necessity of staying on your wings. To keep your freedom, and not being hit by the earth because of a sudden stupid jerky moves.
This is where the binders aim ('religion' comes from a Latin verb for binding) - to call rule-burdened life freedom, or to call undisciplined life freedom- That is to keep the mud waders from getting airborn, to keep them as thear cheap slave labour force. And to drop those airborn back to the mud. Jellous of their freedom. Which would be theirs also if they but accepted the gift. Oh, the lack of insight in that, oh the love of defilement. Trying to dirty up the cleaner who could clean them. And which can't be defiled - how you smudge fire with dirty grease? You'll only burn yourself.
Religion is our upbringer, so we would run begging to freedom, to Jesus - because the religion shows our weaknesses, our shortcomings. And yet it also shows that we should do what the religion demands. To choose the good way of living. To do it right. So we would do it not because command(ment)s demand, but because we love to do so. Because it's the right thing to do. That we would love what's right, what's caring, what's merciful towards others, what's compassionate. And not our own egos. Simply do it, because it's good.
We're just not up to it. Even the best of us won't reach half way there. They just might look flawless to the rest of us. Worst for them and their adorators would be if they accepted the adoration and flattering from the others - that they are good people. Hey: if the flattering comes from a person they think is inferior in holyness compared to them - how could they trust this person's opinion?
Religion can't deliver us from our bindings to evil: it just wakes us to realize we need freedom from it, and can't reach with our own skillsets. To receive the goodness as a gift, not trying to earn it by good deeds. Good deeds rise from the right heart, not the other way around.
