You can try growing daphnia in a lawn pond or a big tub of tank plants too. But if you can't catch or grow them, newt larvae will eat mashed meal worms, live fruit fly maggots, small chopped ground worms, and just about anything they think they can fit on their mouths. Around here the Eastern newts just woke up from brumation and are everywhere along the edge of ponds and such. Brine shrimp might work too.
nice video! I have noticed that this time a year the daphnia usually is more numerous in parts of ponds which get more light :). Probably this is where more microalgae grows. have you had any health issues with newts after collecting food from the wild? Parasites external/internal?
I have a few smooth newts that laid some eggs. The adults eat bloodworms and small baby snails, so i worry they might eat their own babies. Should i separate them, or keep them together until the adults leave the water?
Hi Alex. Yes, they are likely to eat some of their own young but they usually lay several hundred eggs so some may still make it if you not separate them. If you want to rear large quantities of young it's always best to separate them from any adults.
Alright mate me and my son really want to get into keeping newts, where should we start? No idea where to buy them from as no shops around here have them

@@ukcrestednewts Thanks so much for the advice! I will separate the eggs until the adults leave the water.

Just Google newts for sale uk . They go for about £15. If not fire salamanders are a great entry to amphibians.
