    Rabbits were the first business I started when I was still in high school in the early 70's. I sold 4 to 5 dozen of them a week. I was getting $4.00 each. Cost about .50 to .75 to raise them to butchering size. And I would use the feed sacks to put the manure pellets in and sell them for $25.00 each. Made enough money while still going to school to buy me a 67 SS Chevelle and start another business. Eventually sold the rabbit business but I still have the Chevelle....

    What I learned is when animal manure is in a pellet form (as you said rabbit, goat and sheep) it slowly releases its nutrients rather than being taken up by the plants too readily. BONUS. Slow release fertilizer!
    I grew up with rabbits, it was my job to feed them and help my dad skin them which I hated but I was keen for rabbit dinner. When we touched the babies, the mother would behead her babies by the next day and we figured it was because we put our scent on them. We had rabbit stew with spaghetti and baked rabbit casserole with prunes, potato, carrot and onions. The meat can be dry because of the little amount of fat so good to serve slow cooked with sauces. Another bonus with rabbits in the fur. I've seen a rug made from many fur pieces.
    My mother used the rabbit urine and manure straight on her vegies and they grew fast and big!

    Could NOT agree with you more! Our very first animal was rabbits. Here in Alberta, we don’t have the same weather as you do, obviously, but we started with rabbits and built from there. Rabbits worked out really well for us as our “starter” animal. We’re just a small homestead, we’re a semi-retired couple and our kids are all grown and flown the coop, and we raise animals strictly for our own use and our extended family & friends. Rabbits are a primary protein source for us, so they feed us, their manure sustains our gardens and our chickens, and we sell their furs to a shop in the city. Truly a wonderful animal for any homestead, and I’m surprised more people don’t keep them.
    Awesome video 😊👍

      Better Together Life Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry about the delay on answering. Not entirely sure why, but YT hasn’t been notifying me about responses for the past few weeks, not until this latest update 🤷🏻‍♀️ As, the joys of using a tablet 🤦🏻‍♀️
      I honestly don’t know how other people do it, but for us we started out selling the fur to a local leather crafter who I’d bought items from over the years (she makes moccasins, gloves, mittens, etc at a few of the farmers markets in our area). Eventually, a couple years later, when I was trying to locate some bison leather to make a drumhead from, I located a shop in Edmonton (nearest large city to our home, about 3 hours from us) called “Halfords Hide & Leather Co” who purchase furs, hides, etc. They are pretty unique as they purchase primarily from local suppliers, First Nations trappers, etc.
      There used to be several shops similar to this one across Canada who traditionally bought and sold furs and leather, but through the years they’ve gradually gone under or been phased out by other international big name shops, etc. I personally think Halford’s have stayed afloat largely due to their commitment to purchasing from primarily local suppliers, but honestly? I’m not 100% sure - I do know that we’re sure glad they’re still there though, and still a family run business after all these years. There’s quite the history to that business! www.halfordsmailorder.com/history
      We still supply furs to the crafters within our local area, but we are very fortunate to have Halfords as well. Unfortunately, I don’t know if any of this will help you guys at all, but hopefully it’ll maybe give you a couple of ideas? We are really lucky to have found buyers this easily, but having local farmers markets was truly the biggest help for us.

    You got that right. I didn't even butcher any for meat. I had a good buyer that would buy as many as I could sell. You can make a lot of bunnies in a hurry. Then my garden grew to a truck garden, and a greenhouse, and a nursery. All from starting with a few rabbits. Then came chicken, geese, and 3 nice incubaters. I was selling something every couple days. Once I switched to meat rabbit, I bought New Zealand whites and got 9 to12 babies every drop.

    Excellent info as always. I love the idea of "stealth homesteading" where HOA regulations may prohibit other "livestock". One other point is that rabbits are a PORTABLE livestock for suburban homesteaders. It wouldn't be too hard to set up a modest operation in the backyard that could turn a profit and add value to a home garden.

    On your rabbit poo..we raised meat rabbits...for years...what we did to work smarter, not harder..we hooked up long plastic siding..under the rabbit hutches...length wise. Attached high up at one end and gradually lowered gradually to the other end and have it roll into a wheel barrel and every day take the hose start at the high end and gently spray the poo & pee..down the plastic tray and drop into the wheel barrel at the lower end...doing it this way there was no more shoveling, sweeping, it all went down into the wheel barrel. ..then wheeled over to the garden and dumped..so easy this way...and this cleaning kept the whole rabbit area nice and clean , no files no bugs and into summer the area stayed very cool for them, we would just wash the concrete floor, with the cold water from the hose..we had their hutches in a three car bay run in garage..in which two of the bays where all rabbit hutches...and the back wall was where we kept the hutches for the bucks......

      Chris. Thanks for your idea. Here in New Hampshire I would prefer some type of bunny barn. Your garage situation is perfect! We just built a home and no garage. A small bunny barn with screening and a central cement isle would be ideal for me. I tried New Zealand and Californian and liked the Californian. Easier for me to handle. The meat is excellent. I noticed a good registered breed for meat puts on an extra pound of meat. Bread for larger hind quarters. Folks here will pay a premium for composted bunny poop for the garden and for their worm farms.

The trays require cleaning every day and I keep a layer of "Mega Zorb" absorbent pellets in them. The cost of the Mega Zorb pellets is adding up and the chore of pulling out the trays for cleaning is tedious. Thanks for the tip!

      James P -- what is biochar?

    • @jamesp2391
      @jamesp2391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@terrim.602 You should look it up. Lots of video's about it. But the quick is that it is charcoal that has micros in it. Charcoal is very porous and gives them a place to live. These pores also hold water and nutrients as well.
      So it helps hold the nutrients and water which makes a ideal place for fungi, bacteria, and other good guys. When the soil dries out this always these guys to survive.
      Because it is carbon only the soil dwellers do not break it down quickly. Compost has a half life of just a few years and biochar has a half life of up to and over 1000 years. SO if you get it in your soil it is a long time benefit. Longer than you will be around.
      So look at some videos and learn about it. I have only given a little info about it.

    rabit manure is a slow release nitrogen that can feed your garden all season without burning the plants. I like how you use chickens to spread it and work it into the soil. The chicken manure is a fast release nitrogen so it give plants a quick burst of growth to start and rabbit manure continues to feed the plants through the season. Rabbits really are a great animal to start with on a small farm.

    I totally love your approach to sustainability on your homestead. You can grow in many more directions but I can see one item that is missing...Bees. Managed properly the first year colony can be spilt for two or more hives. Once up and running they will be sustainable and provide pollination for your gardens, honey for your consumption and another harvest to pay for themselves. Honey, wax and propolis are all highly marketable by products. Good luck my friend

      How do you keep your bees from swarming each year? Do you devide when you see a queen cell, destroy the cells or do ypu keep he cells and sell the old queen...or do you just let them swarm naturally?

    • @josephvogel7234
      @josephvogel7234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gritklein345 That is a question with a lot of answers. I am not inclined to let my hives swarm. I have a swarm trap bated and in relatively close proximity to my hives to entice them if they should swarm unexpectedly. If there is a swarm cell in a hive and the cell hasn't been capped you have the option of destroying the cell and giving the queen more room to continue laying eggs or... you can split your hive. You have to ensure the split will be strong enough, (time of year) and if you have the equipment/room...You have to decide also how important honey production is to you. Every hive needs to be managed toward a purpose and every beekeeper needs set goals and react to make the best decisions to meet them. It comes down to what do you need more, another hive or a stronger production hive.

    I live in America, and I absolutely love Rabbit Meat! Very, very lean! Almost no fat at all (makes sense, since they are literally jumping around all day long too). Rabbits are a very easy source of meat (populate fast), with very little cost to raise. I can't wait to be able to move out of my Apartment and back into a House again, so that I can get some more Meat Rabbits again. Mini Rex's were always my favorite!

I also use fish parts left over from cleaning fish. I do use some miracle grow too, but I know the Rabbit poo works good. Ive had plants 7' tall or a bit more. I use t posts and cattle panel. I got these plastic clips to clip tomato plant branches to the cattle panel. Works better than tomato cages, and easier to get to all the fruit. My zuchinni do really good until squash beetles come. Them things are hard to combat. I think their larva eat the stock from the inside out.

    My husbands grandmother lost her husband early. She raised her boys by raising rabbits and selling them for meat. The meat company would come by once a month and buy the bunnies ready to harvest. Rabbits reproduce quickly and are similar to chicken. It was nothing for one of her sons to go get a rabbit, kill it, skin it, and bring it in for her to cook up. French people eat rabbits like we eat chicken.

    My partner and I are starting our own rabbittry this spring. Instead of hutches were converting a shed we already have into a colony enclosure. It's just easier to use what we already have. We decided on Rex rabbits because they have amazing temperaments, good color selection, and very soft fur. Were big believers in using everything so a multipurpose breed for pet, fur, and meat is a necessity.

      I have heard that scream twice. Once when a young rabbit was corned by a cat and once when a dying buck took his last breaths. Both times it startled me and made me realize how loud they can be if they choose it. It is mostly only in dire circumstances though.

He occasionally lets some yhat he plans to keep as pets run around our yard but sadly early one morning dogs came in our yard and killed two of them also a loose pregnant female even started building her nest in our living room before he moved her back to the pen.

    I absolutely love your videos! There are still so many to watch. I look forward to getting to know you! My husband and I are blessed to have a few acres of farm land in west central Saskatchewan that we decided this past weekend to utilize! We plan to sell our house that we're living in to pay off all our debts and live in our trailer until we build a bunkhouse. You guys are so encouraging! Thanks for all the great advice! I pray God will continue to bless you and your family!

    I was just letting my pet rabbit run around the house earlier today so I couldn't imagine raising them for meat.

    I highly recommend planting African green tree collards. My rabbit loves the green collards. The purple ones he won't eat because they have a horseradish spicy flavor to the leaves. Tree collards are effortless brassicas to grow and like the moringa, they seem to thrive the more you take. Very prolific. Stick a cutting in the ground and you have a new tree collard. They root easily.

    Rabbits are always #1. I started with rabbits and when I got tired of ducks and chickens we increased our rabbit production. Rabbits rock!

    I would love to see some "101 videos" on raising rabbits! I want to build a homestead (1- 5 acres) with a garden just south below the rural Tahlequah, OK area near Lake Ten Killer. Any suggestions on doing this in such a "colder/storm-prone" area also appreciated. I'm currently living in San Antonio.
