    Thank you for all these videos! I bought a house that I think they drywalled drunk, every seam and corner is a new nightmare, drywall hung horizontal and vertical with angles and ceilings all done bad and then some weird minimal texture to boot! After 3 renovations I thought I could handle it, but drywall is a true science and an art. You're an amazing teacher and I hope you're feeling well these days!

    I use the quickset 20,45,90 for prefills.
    Yellow box of taping mud.
    Blue box of Lightweight all purpose for the rest of the coats to finish.

Is that one ok to use for corner bead board...hot mud seems ideal ... but nervous I may not get it perfect.

    I love the videos. One quick question. I have an attached, insulated garage that already has drywall (from previous owner). It looks like they taped/mudded the joints, did not sand or cover screws. What should I use to cover the screws? Also, do I need to do anything with the existing joints other than sand before painting? Thanks for the help you have already provided!!

    • @brandonbdl
      @brandonbdl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cover nail holes with a smaller putty knife and either regular spackle, green lable all purpose, or plus 3 . If the existing taped and muddled joints look/ feel fine , no cracks , you don't need to do anything exept a quick sanding won't hurt

    • @patheffernan1164
      @patheffernan1164 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@brandonbdl Thanks for the information! I did see that the tape on one joint has ripped and the two surfaces are about 1/4" different (looks like there was some settling, the garage is 20 years old). Can I just fill the crack with joint compound, then redo the tape and another coat of compound and sand? Also, in another spot, the tape is peeling. Is it safe to remove it and start over?

    • @brandonbdl
      @brandonbdl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @patheffernan1164 in any areas that are splitting, cut away anything loose or that's peeling. I'd recommend fibafuse tape for anything with gaps, remove all the loose/ failed tape and replace with fibafuse. Then use 45 minute or 90 minute hot mud. That's a bit more user friendly compared to joint compound and paper tape.

    • @brandonbdl
      @brandonbdl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @patheffernan1164 checkout that killed guys video of hot mud vs regular mud from 5 years ago. It shows and demonstrates very well how different hot mud and regular mud are. I use hot mud for anything big, and regular joint compound only on the finishing skim coats or smaller holes

    So i have a small settling crack that goes across my living room ceiling (about 20 ft in length). Definitely a novice..can you tell me the best mud to use for this product? Im thinking all purpose should do it but would you recommend a finishing product as well?

    Another great and educational video. I’m a DIYer. If I am smoothing knock down to a (hopefully) level 5, can I do all my coats with Plus 3?

    Proform dry wall all-purpose light weight mud is good for taping ?!

    Thanks for the video, is the Ultralightweight version recommended for skim coating?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

      I never use the ultralight as it doesn’t feel good at all to me. I use USG +3 lightweight

    I just used dap dry dex over the fixed screw pops and had alot of them. I put the spackle in a mud pan, long story shirt, it didnt spread to well. What did i do wrong? Should i used the blue bucket?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dry Dex feels like bubble gum to me. I recommend only using all purpose regular drywall joint compound

      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY I am assuming that's the green top. Isnt that hard to sand?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cpaul57 compared to +3 the differences minor but yes it’s harder to sand. I prefer to tell people to use all purpose or all purpose lightweight instead of the lid colors because it’s not always green and blue depending on the brand you buy. I will teach all of this stuff in depth in my courses at drywallacademy.com

    I removed old popcorn off the ceiling and has a rough texture left with some old mud. I plan to smooth it out before texturing. I was thinking maybe 20 min mud with some wood glue mixed in it as my first coat, followed by plus3, instead of two coats of plus3. What do you think?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m now teaching classes about all this stuff on the drywallacademy.com. Tell me why you’re thinking about using hot mud and why you’re thinking about using glue?

    • @richardjeun
      @richardjeun ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I want to use hot mud because I want to fill large holes, get it set quicker, and strong bond. Addition of wood glue would make it stick better and cause less problems down the road; any wood or PVA glue gives good adhesion to old paint and repairs.

    Can you use one of those compounds to texture drywall?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use any of those but I wouldn’t use a fast setting joint compound for that

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I do! And sand with the finest sandpaper you can, up to maybe 320. I use 220.

    topping is for level 5 finish

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Topping is for anything except the first coat of corner bead and taping. That may be your personal preference but that’s not the way the manufacture intended it.

    Just thought of a question. I have houses in Illinois and Florida. Working on my house in Illinois is easy because everything is smooth but in Florida everything is textured. I've tried knock down texturing and did ok but really could use a video on how to do different knock down textures. Any chance you could show us how it's done?
