    Some facts not BS
    1)- Ty Cobb came from a family of abolishinists.His father was a lawyer and Georgia state senator who advocated for equal treatment under the law for blacks.
    2)-Ty Cobb is on record for allowing blacks into MLB in 1928 as a player/manager for the then Philadelphia A's 19yrs before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.
    3)-Ty Cobb as a large shareholder of Coca-Cola sponsored many black owned businesses in and around royston,GA.
    4)- Upon his death in 1962 Ty Cobb was worth an estimated 13 million $ and in his will he alloted some proceeds to go to youth baseball in Georgia and he stipulated that these youth baseball leagues be integrated.
    Ty Cobb like all of us, was a flawed man with personal demons during his life,but alot lies and half truth's have been spread about him since his death mostly the demonization of him as a raging maniac of a racist.he wasn't.
    Mr.O'Niell is a class act,a man of dignity and character and I'm glad he schooled that bimbo reporter who clearly was trying to goad buck into her narrative.

    Shame on this interviewer! She constantly tried to paint O'Neil in a box as just another angry Black man. O'Neil, in his wisdom, saw right through that, and checked her ('Let me tell you something, girl'!). He was attempting to give an understanding as to what shaped Cobb's behavior (the unfortunate ways of the South, plus a traumatic family experience!). Having an understanding of how a man acts doesn't condone the behavior! But it does go to the source in order to in order to find solutions to changing that behavior!

    • @bartstinson4769
      @bartstinson4769 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed as to the interviewer, and as to Buck O'Neill's character, but he was not infallible and he obviously didn't know the facts about Cobb who publicly and forcefully advocated letting Blacks compete in the big leagues, very early, WAY before Branch Rickey. He was descended from abolitionists who refused to serve in the Confederate military, and who were ostracized in the late 1800s for advocating the interests of Southern Blacks. Disappointing that Buck was unaware of this. He wasn't a professional historian, he was just repeating what people used to say about Cobb, and I realize he (Buck) was a man of generous spirit. But he got it wrong this time.

      What do you make of the fact that Cobb called early and unequivocally for the integration of major league baseball? Do you think he identified more closely with Confederate ancestors, or with his Methodist grandfather who immigrated out of North Carolina due to his objections to slavery? Or have you managed to ignore this?

      I think this guy is embellishing what the interviewer is expecting to hear. Check out
      "Ty Cobb’s Character: What We Know That’s Wrong” - Charles Leerhsen
      Hillsdale College. Better yet, search for the full article written by Mr. Leerhsen for Imprimus (Hillsdale College). It's a shame what's been said of this man over so many years. Ty Cobb was FOR blacks playing in the majors.

    • @normanklein3155
      @normanklein3155 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Keeper Spencer I believe Ty Cobb's great-grandfather was Thomas Reade Roots Cobb, who founded the Lumpkin Law School at the University of Georgia, served as a delegate to the Confederate Provisional Congress (where he quite possibly penned the Confederate Constitution), raised his own regiment of troops, “Cobb’s Legion,” whom he led into battle, and rose to the rank of general in the Confederate Army. During a fierce exchange of fire with Union troops, Thomas Reade Cobb was killed in action during the Battle of Fredericksburg, in Virginia, in 1862.

      What he doesn’t do is offer any justification for racism. In fact, HE FEELS SORRY FOR RACISTS BECAUSE THEY SCREW UP THEIR OWN LIVES. Their vile efforts to present themselves as superior actually lowers them in terms of being a decent, fully matured human being.
      As he noted, Ty Cobb was mean to anybody. i.e. - He didn’t really even know how to love his family, friends, himself or even life.
      Bonus point - Many of the people racists think they hurt see what Buck saw.

    Ty Cobb’s father was a professor who spoke against slavery and his grandfather was an abolitionist during the Clvil War who was also outspoken against slavery. Cobb also praised integration in Baseball and said in his old age that the only player he would pay to see was Willie Mays. Not sure where Mr. O’Neil is getting his sentiments from here.

    Cobb: born in 1886. O'Neil: born in 1911. Buck is going on the rumors originated by Al Stump. Was Cobb surly? Most likely. Was he a terrible racist? The new information says that's debatable, even probably not true. I admire Buck O'Neil's courage and thought he was an upstanding guy, still do. But to ask the man his opinion of Cobb, when Cobb was already an established big leaguer the year O'Neil was born, seems ridiculous. "Let's ask Buck his opinion of Cobb because he's an old black guy." Typical PC feel good American media bs.

      +Peter Cheese That's what I was thinking. The biography "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beuaty" by Leerhsen (sp?) talks about this, and it appears that Cobb was not a virulent racist and neither were his parents, but he did have that paternalistic way of talking about blacks that seems rooted in racism. Here's one quote: "Let me say also that no white man has the right to be less of a gentleman than a colored man, in my book that goes not only for baseball but in all walks of life." Here's another: ""That boy Campanella needs only a couple more years at his
      present pace to become the all time catcher in my book . . . excellent receiver, fine in handling pitchers, smart, dynamite with the stick (bat), and an expert in plays at the plate." That "Boy" Campanella.
