It's different grass, fescue instead of bent, and it's a different game in Scotland, ground instead of the arial game it is in the States. but oh so fun. There is a reason they call it Carnasty, and the 16th is just one of 18 reasons. Having played Oakmont in the 80's from the back tees I can tell you there is no comparison. Carnasty is easily 5 strokes harder, at least. On the day I played it the wind was blowing at about 30 mph and it was brutal. Took 4 solidly hit shots to reach the 6th green.
@@sanderslongdrive Maybe not, but under the right conditions 170 putts are possible. I think the guy was asking a legitimate question assuming he is unfamiliar with Scottish golf courses.
The organizers of The Open should have Rick run through all the holes for whatever course is being played. I'd love to watch Rick run through all 18 before watching the actual tournament.
That was great to watch. Loved the in depth analysis of the hole. Please do more. Knowing the history and the difficulty of the hole will make watching The Open an even better experience. Please do more.
That third attempt is what golf and links golf is all about 😂 Not your best strike but you think you have got away with it then the course goes "Nah , not having that" Great vid Rick I reckon you could sell that +2 for all few quid come The Open 😀

I played the 16th 3 times (@ 257 yds) the week before the 2005 Open, with a McGregor MT Drivers (exactly what Nicklaus used in the early/mid 70s). After the 3rd round, my great caddy exclaimed, "I'm really impressed, Watson had a rough time on this hole and you parred it 3 times." Falling in love with Carnoustie and parring 16, 3 times is my greatest joy in golf. We're all blessed to know this game :)
wow, the Fairways are so short it is really difficult to tell where the fairway ends and the green starts ... I think I would putt all the way around ;)

I had the honor of playing Carnoustie and it was by far the best course I’ve ever played. I played St Andrews the day before and it was sunny, no wind and about 70 degrees. 24 hours later on Carnoustie it was similar to your day 4 - cold, high wind and cloudy. 16 was a beast I hit 3 wood to the same spot you hit the bump and run from. That’s the only course Zi’ve ever had to account for wind on some putts. Best golf experience of my life. Thanks for sharing!
These videos, and last years at Birkdale really made watching the Open a much more enjoyable experience becuase Ifelt like I had a better understanding of the course. There's no way you would have time to go this in-depth during the coverage. Well done R&A and Rick Shiels. Love it.
farming simulator music for the cow patch golf course. For the life of me I'll never understand the love for links golf. Good shots are rewarded with bumps and bounces that are frustrating and almost unfair and the puts don't even roll true. Edit: Having said that I love watching the pros try and deal with it, and because of it the open is a lot of fun to watch.
@@mekan0001 All the greats have won the Open for a reason, Their able to adapt their game to links golf which is golf in its truest form, one of the par 3's in the masters is the complete opposite end of the spectrum, everything leads to the hole
Great fun to watch. Rick landed the ball in the perfect spot on day 3 and was unlucky to roll off. Legend has it Jack Nicklaus hit a driver on the Sunday in the 1968 Open!

I was privileged to play that course five years ago. Scraped a 5 on that hole. Still a vivid memory of playing one of the greatest test's in golf. What a course! None of this pine straw stuff, off the fairway lost ball or at least one shot loss. Real bucket list
Nice stuff Rick. Quick story, played Gullane course 3 long time ago and before i went out i had a look at the card and thought 'this looks pretty easy as most of the holes were pretty short'. Jesus the course ate me up. So tough.2 yards off the fairway and your in 4 foot thick gorse,the greens had been bikinin waxed so so fast, not to mention the undulations.Wicked pin positions.Bunkers as deep as wells.Not to mention the weather.The course was just over 5000 yards that's all. It taught me a hard lesson.Never look at a card and think just because it's a short course that you're gonna burn it up haha! Your vid just reminded me of my Scottish golfing experience that's all.
Loved it! I have played 6 rounds on carnoustie, and I must say, that it is by far the most dynamic course ever. Absolutely love it! Hopefully I'll get there soon again for another round. Great video Rick!

This is why I love links golf over any other course type to play. The only course type that comes close is heathland courses. Fantastic challenge Rick, would love to see similar videos at other great courses. As for how I would get on... not sure, but I would take 3 wood on the last, as I know I can punch the 3 through the wind in a way that cannot guarantee with driver. But that would be my percentage shot and rely upon scrambling to get parr or bogey.

I was lucky enough to play this course the week of the Ryder Cup back in 2014. Hands down my favorite course ever. I made bogey on this hole but had to hit driver because of high wind. Total gem of a course.

In the late sixties and seventies it was 237 yds from the back tee. They lengthened the tee almost back to the shelter which is why its longer now. I hit a 1 iron down to a 3 iron then depending on the weather and using the British ball which was 1.62" , better into the wind and easier to strike but not as good to putt with. I started using the American ball long before it was adopted here because of that, it made you a better striker of the ball and more putts went in! You could pretty much only get Titleist then and i've used them ever since.
16 is certainly one of the most difficult par 3’s in golf but it is easy compared to the Rockies - the 5th at Anstruther in Fife. I would love to see you do a video playing that one!!!!
I would be 'lucky' to play it in 6 AND would be happy with that. NOT that I wouldn't want a par - I just am looking at that third shot and how it looked great and then just rolled away. With my 'luck' it would catch every little nook or slope and take me away from the hole. Great video and please do more.

Carnoustie fairways are really tight in some places .. other places they are tighter
