Instead of taking advantage of that, Charles' anger got the better of him and he immediately moved to take out his frustration on who was probably just the unwitting instrument of his betrayal; his sister Jeanette. But how do you spread the word when the enemy can read all of your messages? The Successor States had already left it too late to curb ComStar's power.
Makes you wonder what would have happened if Charles just kept going with his refusal to give in to Toyama; the entire setting could have changed radically if he'd won that staring match.
Given that just two years reversed almost every gain they had made since the fall of the Star League and lost them a ton of units besides, I doubt continuing to be defiant would have helped. Probably would have collapsed the League. Maybe ComStar steps in to broker a peace and makes the whole realm a puppet state like they had hoped to do with Jeanette.

Yeah, I enjoyed making this part a lot. It's a turning point in the 2ndSW history. Up until then it's been very much the same kind of the grind as the 1st. Everything gets a lot more politically complex from here.

Charles Marik is a hero. Not of the Free World's League, but of the Inner Sphere. The FWLM had the largest navy. He should have sent every last warship on a scorched earth campaign against the Lyrans, Capellans, and former Hegemony world's HPGs. If he can't use them, no one can. As an added bonus, this would have made it hard to coordinate attacks on the FWL. Even with the blackout.

I’ve got to agree about Zabu Kurita being a tragic figure and he’s a perfect example of what I dislike about the Draconis Combine. He’s exactly what the Combine needed at the time, a capable administrator and a steady hand who also realized that technology was backsliding and wanted to do something about it. He had basically been running the Combine loyally in his brothers name for years at this point. But the Warlords took the first chance they got to betray and kill him then put someone on the throne who was more warlike and more of a soldier. Freaking snakes.

Had he been able to stem the flow of technological decline, it might have put the DC in a stronger position than it's rivals down the line. However, it might also have brought the wrath of ComStar down on them. When you look at some of the other rulers later in the 2ndSW who had little interest in war, their realms did suffer to the aggression of their neighbours, so removing Zabu might genuinely have been right for the Combine at that moment. But his death is nonetheless tragic.

I’m just appalled that the Warlords of the Combine were willing to take a risk on a new untested Coordinator when they already had one that was an effective and capable administrator. Monarchy is always a roll of the dice when it comes to heirs and that just feels like your asking for trouble. But you do make sense and it could have broken many different ways. We’ll just have to see how the new Coordinator breaks for the combine. I know I’m developing a bad case of everything shady in Battletech is Roms fault because my first thought when I heard about the toy soldier was that comstar did it. I can’t see why they’d do it beyond stirring up chaos but it was my first thought. Also the story of Charles Marik and the shadow war with Comstar makes the FWL and house Mariks alliance with the Word of Blake so much more tragic. They knew that these people weren’t trustworthy and had known for generation still they tried to use them and it ended up almost costing them everything.
Next chapter you really get to see the origins of Word of Blake fanaticism. ComStar might have undergone a transformation since the death of Blake, but they're about to ramp the craziness up to 11.
You can interpret it however you want. He was already teetering on the edge so there was nothing rational about the way he was thinking. Probably thought that the entire SLDF was about to arrive on his doorstep.

Once it ends and ComStar, once again, prevents peace from being achieved the Successor States will start fighting again, only this time, the fighting will be smaller in scale and longer in the years. What I appreciate the most about these videos is just how well they emphasize the sheer level of duplicitous villainy that Comstar had been pulling even before the Word of Blake affair. @@SvenVanDerPlank He should have played the long game, fed ComStar with purposely wrong information. Blowing up the HPG was rash at best. If he had played his cards right he could have turned the rest of the Inner Sphere against ComStar and weakened them or removed them from the picture.
Moral of the story is simple, don't fuck with Comstar.
The ComStar War shows that it is too late to do anything about them now. Just try not to upset them.
