    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      You're absolutely right. They had the jump on ComStar, who were oblivious to COOKIE JAR. Instead of taking advantage of that, Charles' anger got the better of him and he immediately moved to take out his frustration on who was probably just the unwitting instrument of his betrayal; his sister Jeanette. But how do you spread the word when the enemy can read all of your messages? The Successor States had already left it too late to curb ComStar's power.

  • @Tzilandi
    @Tzilandi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    Makes you wonder what would have happened if Charles just kept going with his refusal to give in to Toyama; the entire setting could have changed radically if he'd won that staring match.

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Given that just two years reversed almost every gain they had made since the fall of the Star League and lost them a ton of units besides, I doubt continuing to be defiant would have helped. Probably would have collapsed the League. Maybe ComStar steps in to broker a peace and makes the whole realm a puppet state like they had hoped to do with Jeanette.

    Charles Marik is a hero. Not of the Free World's League, but of the Inner Sphere.
    The FWLM had the largest navy. He should have sent every last warship on a scorched earth campaign against the Lyrans, Capellans, and former Hegemony world's HPGs.
    If he can't use them, no one can.
    As an added bonus, this would have made it hard to coordinate attacks on the FWL. Even with the blackout.

    Thank you for all the effort you put into this video! It was great and I enjoyed it a lot! I’m going to try to start commenting on these videos more as another way to support the channel.
    I’ve got to agree about Zabu Kurita being a tragic figure and he’s a perfect example of what I dislike about the Draconis Combine. He’s exactly what the Combine needed at the time, a capable administrator and a steady hand who also realized that technology was backsliding and wanted to do something about it. He had basically been running the Combine loyally in his brothers name for years at this point. But the Warlords took the first chance they got to betray and kill him then put someone on the throne who was more warlike and more of a soldier. Freaking snakes.

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You're welcome. I'm glad you've been enjoying the series.
      Zabu could have been a good ruler. Had he been able to stem the flow of technological decline, it might have put the DC in a stronger position than it's rivals down the line.
      However, it might also have brought the wrath of ComStar down on them. When you look at some of the other rulers later in the 2ndSW who had little interest in war, their realms did suffer to the aggression of their neighbours, so removing Zabu might genuinely have been right for the Combine at that moment. But his death is nonetheless tragic.

    • @Bluehairedgirl89
      @Bluehairedgirl89 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@SvenVanDerPlank Thank you very much for your response!
      I can’t argue with your analysis of Zabu, I hadn’t really thought of the long term effects that his policies would have had on the Combine. I’m just appalled that the Warlords of the Combine were willing to take a risk on a new untested Coordinator when they already had one that was an effective and capable administrator. Monarchy is always a roll of the dice when it comes to heirs and that just feels like your asking for trouble. But you do make sense and it could have broken many different ways. We’ll just have to see how the new Coordinator breaks for the combine.
      I know I’m developing a bad case of everything shady in Battletech is Roms fault because my first thought when I heard about the toy soldier was that comstar did it. I can’t see why they’d do it beyond stirring up chaos but it was my first thought.
      Also the story of Charles Marik and the shadow war with Comstar makes the FWL and house Mariks alliance with the Word of Blake so much more tragic. They knew that these people weren’t trustworthy and had known for generation still they tried to use them and it ended up almost costing them everything.

    Despite the fact that we're half-way through the Second Succession War, we haven't even gotten to the worst part that comes out of it. Once it ends and ComStar, once again, prevents peace from being achieved the Successor States will start fighting again, only this time, the fighting will be smaller in scale and longer in the years. So long that the Third Succession War surpasses more than three generations of leaders around the Inner Sphere.

      Worst part as in after all those deaths, they couldn't find a way to arrive at a peace? Otherwise I wouldn't say the 3rdSW was the worst because of it's length when it had only a fraction of the death toll and almost zero use of WMDs.

  • @bthsr7113
    @bthsr7113 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A pincer of Cappellan daggers and Lyran hammers while suffering under radio silence. That's a pretty horrifying position to imagine. I can see why Marik chose to withdraw. His only other alternative was to prostrate himself before the puppeteers of this forsaken war who'd used his sister to feed him lies. Neither good, in fact, both were pretty terrible options, but giving ground to his rivals bought him time to continue defying the real enemy in hopes of actually being able to control the destiny of his nation.
    As for Zabu, I am far more critical. He had a very good point and asked so very little of the military. He needed to put his foot down, but by accepting his fate from upstart warlords, he let his cause died an ignoble death while sending a message that if the military didn't like a coordinator, they'd suffer no substantive consequence for deleting one. A most dangerous precedent that echoed the past.

    Comstar - “why does everyone think we’re a bunch of shady cultists”
    Also Comstar messing with each of the successor states so much it kind of became overly obvious for most that Comstar was the primary enemy of humanity.

      Noooot really. Waterley and Focht are more to blame. Waterley for basically creating the secret armies, and Focht for not controlling or destroying the zealots when he had the chance
