  • It’s hard to think of a more perfect boxer-puncher than the legendary Thomas The Hitman Hearns. Hearns’ was a masterclass in using beautiful boxing to set up tremendous power shots. Hearn used his signature flicker jabs and the chopping right crosses to climb his way through five championships in five different weight classes. These techniques were so unique they were even referenced in the popular boxing anime Hajime No Ippo. Many credit Hearns successes to his lengthy frame, but its far more accurate to say that Hearns knew how to use his natural advantages to their fullest. You would be hard pressed to find a better template for aspiring tall, lengthy fighters than The Hitman. So today, we’re going to look at all the incredible techniques and tactics that came out of Hearns unique style and examine exactly how and why they worked so incredibly well for the Hitman.

    Hearns is easily my favorite of the four kings. He's unfortunately the most forgotten because of not being able to beat Sugar Ray Leonard (even though by many accounts he won the second fight) but the man was truly not only a magnificent boxer but someone not afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. Hearns fights were always exciting and gave fans their money's worth even though there was many occasions he could have easily laid back and fought a more conservative long range fight and possibly eked out a points victory.
    It should also be mentioned that the guy not only had titles in five weight divisions, but these divisions ranged from Welterweight to fucking Cruiserweight. That is truly insane and just goes to show how absolutely dominant this man's skillset ones.
    Hearns might be the greatest example of style complimenting physical gifts and attributes, and the way he moved in the ring was truly graceful.

    I enjoy watching boxing, but I can't say I'm a serious fan. I found out about Hearns through the anime _Hajime no Ippo_ . When you watch a sports anime, you figure that what you're seeing in the cartoon is an exaggeration of reality, so I was expecting a more low-key version of Mashiba's fighting style when I first watched footage of Hearns. But holy shit! Watching Hearns' actual boxing was more spectacular than what I saw in the cartoon! The crazy range he has with his lead hand makes you feel like he could hit the other guy from all the way across the ring, and I don't think I've ever seen a better example of "punching with evil intentions" than chopping right! I get chills watching it, it's so brutal and efficient. The only thing that comes close for me is watching Joe Frazier's left hook.

      The mechanic is the same as if you were throwing a baseball. The acceleration you can produce by "throwing" a punch like that is crazy. Your body is made to throw things and if you move your hips too along the way that adds power to the punch.

    • @Leongon
      @Leongon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wuutnopepe613 Yes, exactly like trying to throw something. The difference is that throwing doesn't include a point of impact for your fist. In any case if you are going to use the whole body, you're better off using a regular punch that allows you to put all that weight behind it instead of a whipping one that allows you to still generate a strong impact based on just speed of your arm and keep your lower half free to stay on the move, controlling the distance.

    As a rangy long armed amateur boxer I have taken some inspiration from the hit man. I watched some tape on him from my trainers advice and I picked up the lead arm swinging. It does a few things one it's easier to get my arm up to parry when it's already in motion vice accelerating from a stand still. It helps disguise rising jabs, and makes feints easier to sell.
    If you just stop swinging and flinch your hand forward without punching you will get your guy to stop reacting to it after a couple rounds, which can usually get you a free stiff jab cross combo. Tommy Herns did the same thing. It takes some discipline to keep doing it in the heat of battle but it really pays off. Then after a couple good hard one twos or double jabs your opponent with start biting on it which then opens them up for body shots.
    It's a simple thing but it's deceptively complex. Great video on The Hitman.

Look at what Manny Stewart did for Lennox Lewis and Tyson Fury, who really wasn't a big puncher until he met Sugar Hill. As a student of martial arts myself I can see the biomechanics in play.
