I think one thing that makes Dominator so great is that he has developed a sound within the extreme metal genre. There's several drummers who can play fast and precise, but it's sometimes hard to tell who is playing drums. There's no mistake when Dominator is behind the kit. I saw him play for 1349 in Asheville, NC and as soon as the band started I knew right away it was Dominator on the kit. I ran to the side of the stage and air drummed the entire night. The roadie even let me stand beside him so I could have a clear view. One of the greatest drum performances I've seen live.
He leads with his left. Marthyn you need to bring back these review videos. The way that you do it is the best. I play once a week, and ive learned so much over the course of a couple of years. Thank you

Seen Nils live and if I recall correctly from his technique demonstration episode from DTA, he leads with his left foot(he also prefers to drum in boots too).

Love Marthyn and love these videos, and I'm forever grateful that I was first properly exposed to Nils thanks to Marthyn's "drum teacher reacts" video nearly 3 years ago. Having studied him intensely ever since, I'm not entirely sure he's human. There's so many great drummers out there, and Marthyn does a phenomenal job of shining a light on them, but virtually all of them, no matter how skilled they are, it's possible to wrap one's head around what they're playing. When it comes to Nils, however, it feels like so much of what he plays defies anything a mortal should be able to do, not only the speed and the power, but the intricacy of what he does in basically bludgeoning the kit while his limbs are a blur. I've never really seen any metal drummer capable of pulling quite this shit off, especially live. He's staggering to watch and because there's so much going on, you can learn something new every time, even if just isolating a few seconds of a performance. And at the risk of contradicting myself, what I find sets him apart (live, especially) from a lot of other drummers is that he's a machine without sounding mechanical; there's a living, breathing element to his performance that I find often lacks in other drummers who sound technically incredible but can come off a bit sterile. Nils never sounds like that. Incredible talent.
Nils is not only the best that BM has to offer but hes also the best in DM aswell. Check out the works he did in Sanctification, Aeon and Myrkskog. Blows anything else off the charts for the times they were released, innovative as fuck.
Good insight about his "secret". You have to live and breathe drumming to be able to perform at the Dominator's level. Even people who know nothing about black metal nor drumming observe this musician slack jawed. While that's cool and all, it's another thing to play a full set for a band like Dark Funeral, and at such precision. Might just be the best black metal drummer as he goes left hand path both with hand and foot.
He is definitely leading with the left foot. Love Dark Funeral, especially The Secrets Of The Black Arts and Where Shadows Forever Reign. Nils is amazing, I always enjoy watching him play.
