    Today women around the globe have less access to power wealth and education than men - but one tiny island is leading the world in bridging these gaps. Iceland is pioneering ways to get more mothers back to work, to root out gender stereotypes, and to close the pay gap.
    Could Iceland inspire the world to solve one of its greatest problems?
    Iceland has topped gender equality rankings for nearly a decade. One of the secrets to their success? Start early. This kindergarten in the capital Reykjavik focuses on challenging extreme gender stereotypes before they take root in boys and girls. It's a mission that's led to the creation of 17 schools across this tiny country - all focused on developing a healthy balance of characteristics in both sexes. Girls and boys are separated to allow girls to nurture traits traditionally viewed as masculine, like being bold, independent, and taking risks. And boys are given time to learn traits traditionally viewed as feminine, like being more group oriented, empathetic, and caring - and the signs are that this is working. Research suggests that in later years children from this school have a greater understanding of gender equality when compared to children from other schools.
    Iceland is also promoting gender equality by encouraging fathers to share the childcare burden with mothers. In 2000, it introduced what is known as a daddy quota - three month statutory paternity leave. It's an allowance that goes much further than most other countries in the world. Here over 70% of fathers take up the full three months leave. Why? Because the state covers 80% of a salary during this period up to a cap of $4,600 a month. One beneficiary of this generous system is Egill Bjarnson who is looking after his son Valer. Egill believes the high cost of the daddy quota to taxpayers is justified because it helps get more women into work.
    But even in Iceland men are still paid nearly 6% more than women for similar work. This year Iceland became the first country in the world to pass legislation not just to expose but to tackle the gender pay gap. Companies with over 25 employees like Reykjavik Energy now have to prove they are paying men and women equally for similar jobs. Every job at the company must be measured against a set of criteria - this produces a score. For jobs with the same score workers must be paid the same. When Reykjavik Energy used this pay calculator the inequalities came into sharp and immediate focus.
    The company rectified this by raising the wages of its female employees. Critics of the law point out there will be significant financial consequences for companies as they rectify their pay inequalities - but many argue this is a necessary price to pay. Gender equality will be an ever more pressing challenge for wealthy countries across the world. Could the ambitious measures being tested in Iceland provide practical solutions?

      @@AdityaDeo-cg6eu typically in the western world babies do not goto work with us. Typically 'day care' of some type is used.
      Most mums return to work once the child attends 'fulltime' school hours, typically aged 5yrs old.
      The only interferance would be the same as any other household member i.e. accidents and illhealth. I can only speak from my experience n culture

Often men make the better parent and we've had way too many children, myself included suffer from the lack of an effective father-figure in their lives, be it through separation or work being deemed a higher priority by society. Children are the future. their mental and character development needs what men bring to the table. Keeping men away from their children is detrimental for everyone.
      This subtle form of sexism is damaging to everyone.

      @@kimwarburton8490 Men are of course equal to the task but I think it's obvious that there's something about pregnancy that makes this whole parental thing a different ball game at least during that. So it's clear to me why it's currently more of serious question towards women rather than men. but I agree, they should also ask men if they plan on being a father in the near future because society and the government look like they might finally acknowledge the importance and rights of fathers.

      Because the pay gap is a myth and women enjoy a ton of advatages like *much* lower incarceration rate, lower suicide rate, better life expectancy, no draft, better support overall from society, yet somehow men still have the privilege? It's women that are privileged, extremely so

    Gee, those Icelandic babies are pretty chubby! Very healthy looking children. It's a great idea to allow dads to spend more time with their kids from infancy. I would think that it will help them bond even more with their children.

      Humanity hasn't even existed for a million years. Only ~200000 years. And in the past before farming was invented children were raised communally, which means for ~190000 years both men and women took part in the raising of children. I don't know what happenned after farming. It might be a more modern trend for only women to raise children.

      @Jameshmm are you rich? Your job must really pay if you feel you are in that kind of financial position. In this kind of financial environment it's difficult for most families to afford the woman staying home even when she actually wants to. I find the debate men have on this topic really interesting. I have heard men call housewives leeches and criticise women who work the very next day. Perhaps the male gender should have a meeting and pick a struggle? On that note I will say that if a woman CHOOSES to stay home that society (and this includes a healthy amt of the male population) need to not shame her for it. Similarly a woman whom works should not be shamed for it. What should be criticised of both genders is lack of work-life balance.

      Personally I think even the shown example of nuclear plant was a bit telling. The "unskilled" workers outside were shown doing hard manual labour, with heavy objects, versus the unskilled labourers insides were tinkering with smaller items. Perhaps there jobs really are more similar, but from this video it was easy to see why the former would be paid more for increased physical risk and endurance. I think implementing paternity leave would help "level the playing field", since the forced implementation of maternity leave has certainly made companies view female candidates as more of a financial risk. However, forcing up costs on companies across the board is going to be met with things like cutting wages and hiring less workers. It will be interesting to see what the results of these school programs are. It is a well known fact that the biggest contributing factor in the gender wage gap is the different career choices made by men and women. Where women traditionally go for more empathetic people oriented jobs like nursing, teaching, etc, and men tend to work more with things (and more with dangerous things), like construction, computers, etc. I'm interested to see the results of their experiments and whether or not it has a statistically significant affect on career choices. There have already been several studies conducted on monkeys that show they make these same "gendered stereotyped choices" in play and exploration when left to their own devices. These same results are also seen in >1 year old human babies. Surely no one would argue that these subjects have been "socialized" by gender norms presented in society.

      Most of the Nordic countries have similar laws regarding parental leave. I think Sweden recently, as in during the last two years, increased the amount of time alloted to the fathers.
      And some people were very unhappy with this idea but apparently parents can't share equally the nearly two year parental leave otherwise.

    I feel like the Iceland model is very pragmatic. The score system takes into account many variables that determine wages. If a women gets a lower score, she's paid less. Male gets a lower score, he's paid less. If they have equal scores, they are paid the same. This is very quantitative and logical. What objections are there to this except the fact that some people just don't wanna pay women more?

      My objection is that this distorts the market. If some jobs are more valuable to the market but have lower scores in their system, then people will not want to do these jobs. The market would usually correct itself from the scarcity by increasing wages for those jobs, while this system is inherently inflexible so will not correct itself

And if two workers have the same score within the company then the company has to pay the same for both workers. With same score someone else could earn more at another company. That was my understanding.

    What I love about the Scandinavian system is that they recognise that man have and are constrained by their gender as well and they work to counteract those constraints. In the US I feel like the view is that gender is something that women exclusively experience. Women in our society, while lacking hard power, hold an incredible amount of soft power and framing gender as something that only belongs to one group of people creates division and sets egalitarian progress backwards, especially when the group with soft power is seeking hard power as well.

      Yes, get those females out in those fields, forests, farms, and construction sites and farms where even the female owners that require big strong males to do what their big, strong females can't, won't hire females to fill those positions.
      And I know all those 5'4" 150 pounders with 30% bodyfat will be LINING UP to work as bouncers and doormen.
      And infantry units. We know from experience that will yield stellar results.

      @@lockandloadlikehell Women do work in construction and agriculture though. And in the near future tech will do a lot of the hard work so how will you then defend unequal pay? Obviously certain roles are generally more equipped to men or women but this is increasingly narrowed.

    smh so many commenters who don't understand even remotely what they're arguing about. YES, "equal pay for equal work" includes the actual work conditions, like working outdoors/doing hard labor/working under difficult weather conditions. we're talking about women working the exact SAME jobs as men, doing the same work, but still being paid less.

      The reason employers pay men more than women for the same work is this... this is an actual study btw.... There's a company where every employee does exactly the same job, same hours, same pay, etc. The boss gathered up all the employees and gave them two choices, leave work early or stay and work overtime. All the women choose to leave early, and all the men choose to stay overtime. Surprise, surprise. And that is your answer.

      @@q-_-p.d-_-b The reason why the women chose to leave early is because working women have to work both at the workplace and at home. On the other hand, most men when they return home, don't have to work anymore, they're tired after working for so long, that they spend rest of the night by doing stuff, like for example watching TV. The men chose to work overtime is because they didn’t have to do chores at home when they'd return, but for women, the case is different . If the roles were swapped, I'm sure the men would choose to leave early too.

    The pay gap is NOT between men and women, it is between mothers and non mothers. Taking several months out to have a baby means the mothers career doesn't advance as a non mothers career would. Iceland and I think Kenya have a greater equality because they have a better paternity leave system, meaning both parents can share the responsibility and both their careers suffer less.

      I believe it does. I studied in a girls school for 12 years. Girls from girls schools tend to be more assertive, independent, empowered, and aggressive. When I went to a coed college, I had to “tone-down” my “strong personality”. Apparently being a girl meant that I’m suppose let the men dominate the conversations during group discussions. Sometimes I felt I had to suppress a part of myself to fit in with other girls who were more docile. I’m doing well professionally and I thank my girls school upbringing. One benefit is that most girls from girls schools tend to succeed professionally since we’re more assertive and decisive than other women. Around 60% from my graduating class work in managerial positions.

      @@catherinet6024 I wholeheartedly believe in your experience. I too have studied in an all girl's school. While I think co-ed has its time and benefits, but especially in the earlier year it's important to give the girls a chance to discover their own identity without comparing and competing for boys. I was shocked when I learned that in supposedly advanced countries like the US, girls are expected NOT to excel in math and science as these fields are seen as more masculine (mind you I grew up in Saudi which is terrible for women on so many levels). Learning in an all girls school, science subjects were simply considered (harder) in general for all students regardless of gender.

      @@catherinet6024 Obviously it's different from everyone, but I've always been in a co-ed environment and I have friends who initially went to an all-girls college and I would say that I am probably more or similarly confident and assertive. In fact, in discussions I've had with said friends they actually said they feel more insecure and uncertain around men because they don't have the experience. Maybe it's a cultural/generational/education system difference? Was your all girls school private? Because that is another factor: students from public education tend to have less confidence and assertiveness than privately educated students, on average.

Even public school girls here are assertive and that might be a cultural thing since women are highly valued in Philippine society. Growing up in a country that ranks high on gender equality and gender parity was amazing (The Philippines ranks 8th in the world and is the only Asian country in the top 10). In fact, I never felt being a woman was a disadvantage until I studied college abroad in the US. American men seem to have a hard time taking me seriously in business, a 5’1” skinny Asian woman. The sexism and heightism I’ve experienced in the American workplace left me frustrated so I went back to Manila where I was able to quickly rise up the corporate ladder.

They are trying to distort the market so that women feel more rewarded for what they do, but as a side effect, more men could switch to traditional female jobs. If this works, then stereotypes will be broken. If it doesn't work, then at least women are rewarded properly. If a guy doesn't want to do cleaning while working inside and being paid the same as if he was doing hard work outside, then he will be punished for his pride, and that's fair

    anyone who genuinely believes there is a significant paygap needs to educate themselves on why this 'gap' exists. it exists almost solely due to men (on average) taking higher paying jobs, working more hours, less flexible hours.

    To the arguments that say that outdoor workers should get paid more; the video states that the decision was made based on a point system. So, for example, considering the weather conditions the outdoor workers would get a point and considering say unconventional working hours (the cleaners would have to wait till everyone has left to finish cleaning) the indoor workers would get a point. So, at the end of the day they would both have a point each (therefore equal pay), but for different attributes of their work.
    Outdoor labour might be more physically intense, but, referring back to my hypothetical, at the end of the day they would go home in time for dinner and help their kids with their homework afterward. While that will not be the case for the indoor workers who get home after their kids are in bed. So, there's always an opportunity cost and it's a trade off.
    This is just my perspective and two cents. I'm not here to argue, just contribute to the discussion. Thanks for making it to the end of this comment!

    That's great for Iceland, and I wish them the best of luck. But Iceland is a very rich and secular country with one of the smallest gender pay gaps on earth. Contrasted with other poorer far more religious countries which have far worse gender inequality. I don't think the solutions here will work for other countries which are in more desperate need of reform.

      @@smmm5559 the gender pay gap is not a myth, i had to write a paper on it for HR an I can assure you any serious academic recognises it as a fact because there is volumes of data proving it's existence. It's a global phenomenon with some countries like South Korea having the largest of any OECD country and countries like Iceland having the narrowest gap.

      I live in Austria, a few years back I wanted to extent my wifes (and mother of my children) visa. The women at the immigration office wasn´t very happy that I didn’t meet all the requirements (only money counts in my country. You even can buy austrian citisenship). In the end, she told me that she doesn’t support my application because I need to meet all the requirements, it’s not that I am a young woman. I understood it this way; if I would be a young lady, she would understand that I can’t meet the requirements. But I am a men and thats why I have to meet all requirements.
      In my country, men have to respect womens right but in the same time face such things not only from women but also from men and the law. (Austrian law gives a lot of freedom to immigration officers, that’s why you have cases where Government workers fiances get permanent citizenship after one year and not only after 6 years like ordinary people).

    The reason why the workers outside and inside were paid different is because the outside workers are doing more physical and exhausting work while the inside workers are doing less physically demanding jobs. Its not about “unconscious bias” its about the work you are willing to do and how long you are willing to do it.

    the real problem is that men think women either dont have any financial responsibilities in life or have fathers and husbands who support them. But women are no longer supported by husbands and women have to pay the same amount as men to have a car, to have somewhere to live but are paid less. A woman's dental care costs the same as a man's. A landlord or a dentist does not give a woman a discount because she is a woman. In addition, women have to spend more money than men .. not only on makeup and hairdressers but also for precautionary safety measures like taking a taxi home late at night. I am not so sure that the erasure of masculine and feminine is good. A neutral world seems unexciting and bland to me. But companies need to realize that women are working to pay their bills and have the same very real financial obligations as men do.

    In Canada, THERE IS a paternity leave, at least in the province of Québec, and in addition, a parental leave which can be shared or not depanding of the parents' decision. No salary from the employer, but a wage from the government.

    I agree on anything in this video except for this one 05:20 , if it comes to unskilled jobs, we must get paid according to the power we use to work, not because we give more value traditionally male dominated jobs,
    we can't pay the same price for cleaning service jobs and piping and fitting jobs, that's unfair, the risk and the power used in both jobs are different.

    Do the indoor jobs and outdoor jobs have the same demands both in difficulty and applicants? If you compare unskilled jobs in comfortable safe environments to those in uncomfortable unsafe environments they should have different amounts of people applying.

      of course they do, and I can bet you 100 dollars that female models gets paid several times more than male models.

      obsidianstatue actually I would assume that since there are less male models then they would be in higher demand than female models and they would be paid more

      @@rainbowflowerpower4464 nope, there is a lower demand for male models THUS fewer male models in the industry, lower demand also means lower pay, this is simple economics, something modern feminists don't believe in.

The lower demand for male models probably does not offset the far lower supply, thus increasing the relative wage they earn in comparison to female models. After all, women cannot model male clothes or appear in advertisements for products meant mainly for male demographics.

    I believe that if they are both working in the same environment, either inside or outside, and are doing the same jobs exactly, then there should be equal pay regardless of gender.

    The best place to be a woman is silicon valley. Since few of us want to be engineers, there's a 2:1 ratio of men to women here. All my girlfriends are dating guys that are twice as attractive and twice as educated as themselves. You can have you pick here!

    What is that mean: unskilled workers? Is in it that for any kind of task to be completed you need some level of specific skills?

      Here's the definition: Unskilled labor is used to refer to a segment of the workforce associated with a limited skill set or minimal economic value for the work performed. Unskilled labor is generally characterized by a lower educational attainment, such as a high school diploma, GED or lack thereof, and typically results in smaller wages.
      Basically, it's labor that doesn't require a specific education or work experience, and therefore usually has lower wages.

    As a woman I found that what is blocking me from the higher education is help with a learning disability that happens more in males there for there is less help available for my kind of learning disability ( reading disability) because it affects more males

    I love Iceland. One of the happiest places on earth . I don't know what kinda research is conducted on these kids . Why isn't paternity leave given to fathers in other countries..it is just ridiculous .
    But , workers outside regardless of gender , needs more money in compensation for their risk?. That's understandable...

      Exactly. Thats one point thats true, and women cant reply. Men can get more work done in tougher conditions, so they hire more men. Your point is very true, so nice.

      *In a fast food joint where I worked it was almost entirely female. We were cheap for that particular industry, geographic location, and role. I was one of the higher paid ladies, but that still didn't change much*

    Please, I love The Economist, especially for its clarity, but when they discuss comparing unskilled men's job that are mainly outside, with unskilled women's job that are mainly inside, they do not make the comparison clear. Is the location (inside v outside) a factor in the pay discrepancy or not?
