The moss on the trees is called "spanish moss" at least thats what we call it in Mississippi

1 reason old plantation or home site can be dangerous is because they used to have many wells for watering their animals, for kitchen, for general use by public passing by. I know one place might have as many as 13 wells. And 1 well at our house was caving in around the well. Mom didn't even want us to go into that area so we stayed away from it.

I lived in Savannah, Georgia for 6 years and Spanish moss is in all of the oaks. However, there are little red bugs (I think they're called chiggers) that are very itchy if they bite you.
South Alabama is full of chiggers also.
EA- AWESOME! As you know I am an Antiquary, and as such, part of being a Culturalist and Researcher includes some exposure to Archaeology. This installment really got me fired up! And yes, although there is a HUGE battle between hobbyists and researchers, I will be the first to tell you that Researchers do use metal detectors, and often need people with good equipment to help them. There is a happy medium in my world. That said, not that I'm picking favorites or taking sides, but your Lovely Bride had you on the front/back house issue. As a structural inspector and with my forensic architecture experience, from the directory that you showed us, the house you walked around was the front house in the picture- missing the arched entrance and upper balcony- missing the chimney stacks and observatory at the top which were likely removed as hazards. Look at the Directory, and look at each of the sides of the building as you walked around. She got you. This was a Super installment. These urban archaeology vids are always so interesting. Look at the building, look at the front where the porch and the upper balcony were removed, count the doors/ windows on each side (aka elevation) they match exactly with the front picture, but not what can be seen of the obscured back structure. I"ll send you a picture of my silent partner. lol. Best-
My dad's family were pioneers in Alabama. He was born in 1928. I moved to central Alabama and lived in Alabama for 10 years. There are so many abandoned towns and houses. My house was mildly hunted built in 1885. There was a pre civil war house down the road. The lady who owned it was buried behind the house in 1844. They had problems selling or renting the house. One renter told me the house was haunted.
I looked at the house to buy before I had bought my house. It did really have a weird vibe. It still had the old tobacco and corn sheds.
One lady had a 1934 antebellum style two story house with a very large porch with the white columns. She remodeled the whole house. It had been empty and derelict for some years. The house sat on a knoll. I wanted to see the house so I walked up the driveway. The feeling I got as I walked up the driveway was the Wizard of OZ. I got to the door of the house and a sign on the door read: THE GREAT OZ IS NOT IN. I knocked on the door anyway. The lady was home and we visited. She was gracious enough to show me the house. The property had a very magical feeling the whole time I was there. The man who built the house was a banker and a very kind man. I have never felt that way on a piece of property.
When I walked down the driveway the feeling of lightness went away. My house was mildly hunted. I lived in a terribly hunted house for 20 years in Oregon. That's why I know the difference.
My old house in Alabama had 12' ceiling and needed a lot of work. It was homey and comfortable. We had to move for work and I was left to pack up the house. Evidently the male spirit of the house didn't like that my husband was gone. So towards the evening loud banging noises started happening up stairs. Every night for 4 days at the same time. It sounded like
sheets of plywood falling over and over again. So I went up stairs and nothing. No plywood nothing. So I went outside no wind. No tree limbs hitting the house. No varmints nothing. After a couple of days I figured out it was the old man who own the house in 1930.
The man and his wife drank a lot. He owned the dry goods store and ran liquor during prohibition. He was very abusive to his wife. One day he was abusing his wife. She took the opportunity to run to the car to get away from him. He came out of the house and shot her in the shoulder. His wife didn't leave him. She healed up and was crippled in her one arm.
To live in Alabama is frightening and magical at the same time. It IS everything they say it is the people too. In the small towns away from the cities is the real Alabama. The descendants of the pioneers of the original settlers still live there. REALLY CRAZY but interesting.

yet another interesting vid mate, keep them coming. just finished watching detectorists third series (so funny), round here they are doing tours so you can go see where all the filming took place (or you can just wander around on your own for free). look up framlingham Suffolk, great castle etc, unfortunately Ed Sheeran is also from Framlingham so the castle now gets overlooked but you can walk around the pub and places where they filmed detectorists.
I love our state history. Have you ever been to Natural Bridge Al. It is South of my town of Haleyville . Keep up the great videos .HOOAH

Couple of quick comments...I grew up not far from there, matter of fact several of my ancestors from the 1800s are buried in the old cemetery there. I've NEVER seen the name of that town spelled with a "W" in it...I noticed it spelled with the W on several of the historical markets, but in the name of the river it's spelled without the W. And yep, that's "Spanish moss"

The moss is Spanish moss. Unfortunately it usually has lots of mites and sometimes chiggers in it. Don't take it home or put any in your car. You can buy it sterilized for that reason!!

The song "seven bridges road" is written by the eagles, about a road in lowndes county, near cahawba, called the seven bridges road. The lyrics talk about moss in the trees amd stars in the southern sky. Youll like it
Not true. It was written about a drive down a road in Alabama but not Cahawba and Cahawba isn't even in Lowndes County
@@htank01 cahawba house is in dallaa county and was the capitol of the confederacy. The seven bridges road is a song about a drive down a road in lowndes county, called the seven bridges road(colloquially). Reread the post amd youll see that i said that cahwaba was near, not in lowndes county.
The "Seven Bridges Road" is Woodley Road in Montgomery, Alabama. This song describes the emotions the singer feels as he travels the road, which does have seven bridges and moss covered trees.
Also the Capitol of the Confederacy was located in 3 different cities. Montgomery, AL Richmond, VA and Danville, VA

I was watching on my large TV with Prime Firestick. TH-cam changed it yesterday to a different platform and the quality is crapola. I am going to my Wi-Fi provider on Monday and complain. I have been a customer for 20 years and they're charging me $120 per month saying I have the best highest speed. They are offering for NEW customers the same speed for $70.!!
As I've said before, I live in the country and that 20 years ago they accidently ran a line down this road. No one else out here has cable WiFi. When I first signed on I just had an antenna and 3 channels. With cable it was right under $8 a month and 20 channels.
Satellite is no bueno here. It's like we're in a weird valley. It is outside Roswell you know. But being alien, shouldn't the reception be better?? I don't know.

Unlike parasitic organisms that cause harm by taking nutrients from their host, Spanish moss does not grow into the tissues of the trees that harbor it. Spanish moss is an epiphyte, a type of plant that grows on the surface of another plant but remains entirely independent. The house you first looked at belonged to Mattie, she was the last one that lived in the house just a few years ago. My parents had a fish camp just across the street. I was able to meet her several times. She was a nice lady done wrong by the government. Her husband was a soldier and is buried not far from her house. She didn't have a birth certificate and couldn't prove her age so she couldn't qualify for any kind of social security or medicare. She lived in that house in conditions most of us would consider unbearable. The inside of the house was ONCE impressive I think 10 or 12 feet tall ceilings and 12 to 18 inch plaster crown molding. AS the video shows, the house is all but falling down now.
I read a structural engineer was hired to help save it. I believe anyone capable of using hand tools would have been better.

Ghost hunt there tonight..lits of people,bonfire....Every single time I go ( I live 10 miles away)I see rattlesnakes,and all other species of course but yeah,the turkeys,deer,it's all there..no metal detectors,bummer,but I just like the old schoolhouse,I always get tons of funny evp's,one of them called me short and stupid.im 6 ft. Tall,he must be a biggun...lol
