    Great video! You can still use the vinyl scraps for the joy. You just need to put them on the mat :)

    I really enjoyed watching this. I have a Joy and have only been doing small projects. Now I see that I can do so much more with Joy.

    One of the very best videos I have seen to date that walks the crafter through the process. Very detailed and easy to follow. I do have a Cricut Joy and am working on making one of these signs as well as the wooden Christmas ornaments. Can’t wait to see what you create next. Thank you.

    This is perfect. Thank you for posting! I’m new to Cricut and couldn’t understand how this tiny machine could print lengthy projects (measurement wise). Now I see! I just put in my order for my first Cricut and I decided on the Cricut Joy because it will do everything I need it to do (for now).

    The gaps between the boards are just right.

    How did you get it to cut vertical? If it is bigger does it do that automatically? Thank you!

      @@SarahVanderkooy Thank you. I made some letters using the vinyl, not sure what to do with them. Glue it to the wood board or paint them. 🤔 confused.

    I wish mine came in that nifty bag. It is on my wishlist, but first I want to stock up on vinyl, pens, cardstock, blanks, ect... do you have anywhere you recommend getting such items without completely breaking the bank?

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Always shop sales and know that you don't need to use Cricut brand items all the time. I'm a fan of vinyl from HTVRont, and cardstock you can buy at Michael's or Joann when it goes on sale. You can use regular pens in your machine, check out this video and do some trial and error but it could save you a ton of money. th-cam.com/users/shortsIfCKYBvhwN8

    Not sure if Im the only one but when I remove the vinyl pieces with tweezers or the weeding tool, it leaves little holes in the wood from the picking, I tried this with oracle 651, could that be why? ( stickiness) or is that unavoidable?

    Your video was very helpful because am considering getting a Cricut Joy mainly because these signs are super expensive and I'm not a regular crafter, but from time to time I like to make things, not all are using vinyl. I am thinking of doing one of those 'chalkboard signs, that is either 26" wide by 38" long or 23" in wide by 35 " long. I saw a black chalkboard with the latter measurements and thinking of painting it an olive green for fall with a fall saying in white vinyl. I am wondering what is the largest font size for the cricut joy? I think it said it can print up to 4 feet in length? Also wondering, if I decide to paint it, can I use acrylic paint, or should I use chalk paint, or different kind of paint? So far you are the best in explaining how to use it, step by step. Thank you.

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Audrey, thanks for watching. The Cricut Joy has a mat width of 5.5 inches. The font has to be slightly smaller than that. The length shouldn't be an issue. You can even cut individual words if needed. The letter height is what limits you. But I think if you did 2 or more lines of words you could make some great signs with the Joy.

      Hi Sarah... I was watching this video again. In it you stated that you would show one you already created. That's what I am wondering. How do you create a project with words and to get the lettering correct. My phrase is: I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers Anne of Green Gables The 'O" would be the biggest letter capitalized with the rest of the word October in a bit smaller font.
      Are you able to do a tutorial on how to create a project from the beginning? That would be most helpful. Or if you know of where I would get this information because as you know the Cricut Joy doesn't come with those instructions. And I want to do my own custom words.

    I am making a sign today! Thanks for your video. I too chalk painted my board, but did you also wax it?

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad you're making one. I did not use wax on this one. I have not tried it with vinyl, but my thought it the vinyl may not stick well to a wax finish. Best of luck with your project.

    • @joannrose8154
      @joannrose8154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarahVanderkooy Thank you. I did not put on wax but decided to put on a matte clear coat for chalk paint over the whole project. Next time I think I'll put the clear coat on before the letters to help with any little tips that might pull up the paint and then not stick. My sign turned out beautiful!

    Im new here and i was wondering if there is a way to print without having to weed out the vinyl. Is there something specific i have to do in design space?

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Cricut is a cutting machine so you'll always have to weed when working with vinyl. I do have a technique on how to stencil a sign without a cutting machine, so no weeding. This method might work for you too. th-cam.com/video/QGMlj6EkDag/w-d-xo.html

    I bought the Cricut joy. I plan on using my phone but should I also use the computer?

    • @SarahVanderkooy

      You don't need to, the app on your phone will work just fine. Sometimes I like the larger screen on my computer, but it's not necessary.

    Is the smart vinyl weatherproof?

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just make sure you choose the permanent option, there is also a removeable variety that won't hold up.

    • @SarahVanderkooy
      @SarahVanderkooy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can estimate it for you. The wood was a 1x4 that I already had, pretty inexpensive maybe a few dollars for a long board. Then some paint or stain, you can do many signs with one small bottle of craft paint for around $2.
      A roll of Cricut Joy Smart vinyl is roughly $6. Transfer tape is $4.
      Hope that helps.

    Seems like too much wasted vinyl with the piece you cut off. Esp if the JOY is the only cricket you have.😢
