I remember this era well, both my mom and dad worked for pan American in Miami. dad was an operations manager, and my mom worked flight watch. I have menus from the 707s from maxim's of Paris. now that was really flying! unlike today, a city bus in the air. I don't fly anymore...
There is something nostalgically beautiful about Panam and their compromise with flight, technology, efficiency, quality and good things for everyone, it was the iOhone of airlines for me, even when I'm not even American, but I like a lot their compromise with the people for the people.
Pan Am's inaugural 707 flight from New York's Idlewild Airport (now JFK) to Paris LeBourget took place on October 26, 1958. It was the first revenue flight of any Boeing jetliner. BOAC beat Pan Am by a few weeks when in started Comet 4 Jet Service between London and New York 3 weeks earlier.
True, but flying was very expensive back then, it was an uppercrust thing to do. I was a kid back then and we did fly (to Mexico, on Western Airlines). My parents later told me how big of a deal that was back then, and how we were the first family on the block to fly.
Back then airlines offered a higher standard of service, and more space per passenger, because they were still competing with Transatlantic Ocean Liners.
I think that in these old videos the only show first class. I flew on a 707 in the 60's (I was a kid) and I remember that it was six across in coach, just like today. Service was better in coach back then, though.
Yeah and gas prices was so cheep! And they could afford to give amazing food and hire people up the yahoo... once the gas price went up... that was the dropping of everything to service and food.
Yes you are correct. If you watch the film, it describes how in 1954 "Flight 1000" was announced -- destination London -- but it was only a "paper" flight. Thanks for the note.
Wasn't 1954. The copyright on the film says 1957, and the Boeing 707's first test flight was in 1954. Took a few of years for Pan Am to inaugurate jet service, and the first flights to Europe were in 1958. This film's script is written in future tense, e.g. "the service will fly across the Atlantic in..."
The first flight of the “Dash 80” was in 1954. However, when Juan Trippe agreed to buy 707s, he insisted Boeing widen the airframe to 6-across seating like the DC-8s he was simultaneously buying. The takeoff we see is a test plane for the new design in Pan Am colors. It takes off from Renton, and you’ll observe it’s empty in the flying scenes
iRoxproductions - It does not take 8 hours to fly from JFK to London. Non stops are scheduled for 6:50 and can do it in less when the jet stream cooperates.
Actualy the first flight trans Atlantic took place in 1952 and it was the British who did it with British built plane, the Comet Jet aircraft which looked very much like a Boeing 727.
No it was not, first non-stop trans-Atlantic commercial flight by a land-based aircraft, a four-engine Focke-Wulf Fw 200 “Condor” developed by a German manufacturer and flown by Lufthansa. The plane landed the afternoon of August 11, 1938 at Floyd Bennett Field, now a park in Brooklyn, after taking off about 25 hours earlier from Berlin on a 3,728-mile flight. Later the DC4 and offcourse the Constellation dit it.
Interesting . We are talking about airliner not just transatlantic flight . If we really want to talk about first transatlantic flight we can not leave out the Spirit of St Luis Flown by Lindbergh in 1927 from New York to Paris . In terms of First Jet Airliner to Cross the Atlantic from London to New York it was the Comet 4 , British Built .
Correction . In terms of resemblance The aircraft I had in mind was The Trident not the Comet. The Trident British built took to the skies in 1962 well before the Boeing 727 . The Trident had a few short comes , one of them being too small engines . But the 727 took care of that and it became one of the most successful aircraft ever built.
A 707 cruise up to 977 km/h. Modern jets cruise at slower speed for fuel economy, and varies on payload or number of passengers. Typical modern jets cruise speeds: B747 (933 km/h), A380 (903 km/h), B777 (892 km/h), B767 (850 km/h), A330 (871 km/h), 787 (903 km/h), B737 (838 km/h), B757 (854 km/h) and A321 (829 km/h)
Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous TH-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! was a great source of comfort when the non-smoking sign went off -- and everyone would light up and relax !!!!

Well, then the comets started blowing up so
This was years after the Comets blowing up, after they put lipstick on that pig trying to get the public to fly in it again.
Oh how air travel has changed.

I remember being on these planes as a kid in the 70's everyone got a bag of smoke roasted almonds and coloring books for the kids
I remember getting "Wings" and those funny headphones!
view at 10:20 has the plane flying down the river Thames, the airport is in the other direction
what is a projector
It's like a 1950s VCR that doesn't record.
A movie projector projects film onto a screen for viewing.

Correction ; the first airliner to cross the Atlantic had 4 engines - Comet 4- .
Trident - 3 engine - came later in 1962.

viorel nichols The Comet in no way resembles the B-727.

They were allowed to smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱😨😬
+Mohamed Eltatary Not only that, at Braniff, where I worked, every passenger was given a free pack of five cigarettes!
Thank God smoking was banned decades ago!!!
This practice forced everyone who didn't smoke to smoke. Thank God it has since been banned!!!
You have your opinion, I have mine.
I was there.
People used to get dressed up to fly
Then you shorten the fuselage, put smaller wings, landing gears, and only two engines and you end up with the ugly 737-200 offspring!
OMG. These people look so clueless.
millennials are more clueless, they think they are getting smarter, but no.
(laughing) Always easy to tell when a millennial makes a comment.
Isn't Idlewild in CALIFORNIA?
