    Clarification: Ride to Happiness' drive tires roll the train back to the launch platform where guests can evacuate, not the main station. Although it would be awesome if they could send the trains backwards through the Jojo roll. That would be the best evac ever.

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think I'd have been inclined to design them so they accelerate the train just enough to make sure it didn't valley. then there's no evacuation required.

      I got the “chance” to ride Pegasus and the many other “Olympians”. Below is my 10ish word for all of the coasters unless specified these were front or really close to it.
      Zeus-A fitting lighting logo but not terribly rumbly.(The day I went, I had the fortune of experiencing this in a downpour. It didn’t for the rest of the day but I thought this was worth noting).
      Hades 360(Mid-Train): Hell’s not this cruel.
      Hades 360: Tolerable but still hell on my body.
      Cyclops: Not an ugly monster but still a monster.
      Pegasus: I’d be in less pain taking on Spiral Pegasus.
      Overall: Glad I got to experience but not rushing back to it…maybe just keep to the water park…or not…who knows.

    The idea that Arrow Dynamics didn't think the upstop pads instead of wheels would be a problem on Magnum XL-200 before its initial release is... amazing to me. Let alone the metal lap bar... its nuts. With a coaster that large, and at that speed... it seems almost inevitable these would be issues. Regardless, a very interesting video! Look forward to the Lightning Rod one!

    • @coasterguy
      @coasterguy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to have an old VHS of an early test run POV on Magnum. At the crest of every hill, you could hear the upstop pads scraping the rails. It sounded like radio static.

      I just think about an Arrow mega coaster and my head starts to hurt.

    • @AlexAfferMetallica
      @AlexAfferMetallica ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive always thought the same thing, like obviously pads would cause way too much friction and be way less practical than wheels, and why would they think to first try this out on a record breaking, limit pushing coaster like Magnum? Maybe they thought the upstop wheels wouldnt be as necessary since the coaster had no inversions?

    • @coasterguy
      @coasterguy ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@AlexAfferMetallica Arrow considered Magnum to be basically a very large scale mine train. The cars and chassis were pulled directly from that line - and those used the unstop pads. The first 'large mine train' model posing as a regular coaster was Astroworld's "Dexter Frebish's Electric Roller Ride" (later named Excalibur) that featured a large drop near the beginning of the layout, then basically did lots of helixes and mine train-style stuff, only way up on stilts. That drop worked just fine with the pads, except for the back car, which would smack those pads on the underside of the track and catapult back-seat riders into their lap bars (which were at least six inches above their laps). It was deliciously terrifying, especially for folks who'd ridden the ride many times, but never before in the back seat. The looks on their faces said it all.

      It only looks crazy. There are lateral jolts on many other coasters that snap you even more. What makes this one different is where it is, being at the end of the ride, where it makes no sense. At least there aren't over-the-shoulder restraints to bash your head into, like you get with Cedar Point's Raptor, which has an even more violent jolt into the brake run.

      It isn't good and won't ever be good unless and until they untwist it.
      EDIT: I realize this is a pejorative comment, but as someone who very much prefers milder rides... RMC's fetish for adding unnecessary intensity to what had often previously been family or moderate-intensity coasters irks me to no end. And after what they did to Colossus, the one major coaster at Magic Mountain I was likely to work up the nerve to ride... I have little reason to go there.

    Here's another one that doesn't get brought up - the original audio system on Space Mountain at Disneyland. After the success of Space Mountain: De La Terre A La Lune, Space Mountain got a new audio system with a score composed by Dick Dale. However this system added a lot of weight to the trains, specifically the batteries. Not only did these batteries never get charged properly, causing the music to not play, it also caused excessive stress to the track and structure, causing it to be structurally compromised, and led to the 2005 retracking by Dynamic Attractions, as well as almost a complete rebuild of the structure, with supports being dug more underground to support the new track/trains.

    I'd jate to say it but Twisted collosus somewhat deserves to be there. As a Roller Coaster Operator i understand the pain of not being able to dispatch trains on time. From my experience, the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest, including myself, is not having loose articles ready/ or left at the queue or with a non-rider, taking bags up to the station. With only one train on our track, it severly drops our ridership per hour. BUT as a Roller Coaster Operator; the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest. not having loose articles ready, taking bags up to the station. My ride has one train and it does severely drop our riders per hour. IF TC gets a dual station, i do hope is simillar to Tatsus Station....

It's a neck breaker for sure, and it always catches you off guard. I would say Hades 360 is more painful on your neck overall though from sheer roughness. seems like the best solution for twisted colossus would be to remodel the platform so there is an unload section, a load section, and three trains. then there is plenty of time to unload, and move the third train forward to load, and still anticipate the starting light for the race. then simply put the personal item lockers on a system that presents the same lockers the riders had before they loaded at the unload platform when their train comes in.

I'm sure it provides some downward push as well, I don't see why it couldn't, but I would think the natural boost given from the extra height would be more reliable. I am well aware of Hopkin’s coasters. Desert storm is my home park’s main attraction and it still carries out the legacy of Texas tornado with some oddly shaped (but awesomely forceful) loops.

    I used to go to Mt Olympus Every summer as a kid with my family. Zeus, Hades, and Pegasus are all fun wooden coasters. But even as a child that final turn on Pegasus is brutal. It really just hits you as if being punch in the face by a UFC fighter while not paying attention.

    The LIM system on Mr. Freeze does not accelerate the train down the spike. It pushes the train further up so it will have enough speed to make the return trip.

    What i would suggest for twisted colossus is to add a countdown in the station so that people are rushed to enter the train

  • @BrianMark1776
    @BrianMark1776 ปีที่แล้ว

    The fix for Twisted Colossus, is to have a third train running. This gives it a two minute loading time instead of one, unload before pulling into the station. So empty trains are always delivered to the loading dock.

    Always cool to see King's Dominion on any list. I'd been going there since the early 80's when it was originally owned by King Entertainment. First coaster I ever rode as a kid was The Grizzly. I was always too young to ride the King Cobra when it was still there in operation. Shockwave was my first coaster with an inversion. So many fond memories.

    i operated mr freeze at st louis, the reason that one valleys is not the launch motors, one of the trains has issues with drag on the metal fins, i worked an entire season without a valley, however, the bad train stops before the station several times a week, sometime several times a day, the drag gets so bad the it almost cant make it through the tophat quite often, thats how you know its going to underpark

    Rather loud final brake run, housed in an uninsulated tin metal tunnel (think: Pipe).
    Yeah you can hear the brakes roar across half the park, and you're advised to plug your ears when you dive into the tunnel.

    In regards to Twisted Colossus racing at Magic Mountain, the ride ops really seem to be the ones responsible for it dueling or not. Let me explain, as a ride operator myself, we have total influence on guest speed to a large degree. You gotta screen them beforehand and as they come in and play some mind games with them to get them to move faster and it works for the majority of the time. One of the last times I went to ride TC, the dispatcher wad not doing any of this. Was not telling the guests that they need to be quick if they want to race and was not telling them to take off all lose articles before hand and not one cycle was dueling. But then mid way through the line they rotated positions and the op to replace him was ON IT let me tell you. An absolutely amazing dispatcher and very vocal with the guests. You can only duel every 2 cycles with 2 trains and let me tell you we were dueling every 2 cycles forsure and the line was moving way faster. It's more the operators than the guests if you're not dueling.

    There's a coaster in Cedar Point called The Mine Cart (or Mine Ride). It's a tamer, smaller coaster to start kids out on becoming thrill seekers. When you look at it it looks smooth, but it jerks you around turns and often feels bumpier than Gemini or their other older wooden coasters which says a lot! As a kid I thought the jerkiness was great. As an adult, I rode it last year and had my elbow hit the side of the cart multiple times on the turns. It was that jerky and I'm a small person. I had a dad say something behind me and his kid said "Why not?" I can only assume it was "We are not riding this again."

    Was at Dollywood this Monday. Lightninh rod was out of service the whole day. It would suck to lose a coaster, but if it has that many issues they should either scrap it, or completely rebuild it.
